  • September marks my one year anniversary of being an owner operator! I've actually driven this truck for almost 3 years, but last year I bought this '06 Peterbilt 379 from my boss. They say it's expensive owning your own truck... They weren't kidding...

    Ran my Isuzu Giga 560 for 10 years. She done 2.2 million kms in that time for me and never touched the engine or gearbox or diffs in that time. She was a truly tough truck. With the money I made off her I was able to start up hauling coal in Western Australia with a Kenworth C510 powered by a QSK19 with road train. Most payloads are between 180-250 tonnes. Have grown the fleet to 5 Kenworth C510s now. All have done around 60,000 hours or 3 million kms as they run 24/7. Havent had much repair work HOWEVER, this is due to providing good trucks from new, employing the right people to operate them and having a great mechanical workshop servicing amd maintaining each unit weekly. Thanks to a team effort the trucks have continued to earn money with very small downtime. I'm a firm believer in getting the trucks serviced on hour meters opposed to mileage. This way ANY engine work is accounted for and serviced accordingly. As the trucks run 24/7 the are serviced every 250 hours which is every 10.5 days. With new engine oil, filters and air cleaner every service due to the extreme heat and dust we work in. The gearbox and diffs are serviced every 1000 hours. Good gear to begin with, good operators and great servicing make a reliable trucking company.

    Get you a shop manual for your truck.
    It has everything you need to know about your truck. You need to do as much work as you can yourself.
    You'll save a lot of money. It also dosen't hurt to find a cheap engine to fix up and put to the side.
    I have two extra part trucks that have the same engines and transmissions as my personal truck.
    I paid $5k for one and $3k for the other but they have both saved me a ton of money in parts over the last few years.
    The shop manuals are the best investment you'll make I promise.

    My front rear did the same thing, 10 grand to replace. I had been complaining about a vibration and nobody could find it. Well we found it.

      Haha yep! I had a slight vibration that would come up while shifting gears and powering on. Didn’t go away until the rear diff was replaced

    Truckers don’t get enough respect today, it’s sad. If only they knew how much America and Canada, basically everywhere, depends on trucks. I want to send this to people who want autononomus trucks on the road. They don’t know how much time and effort goes into this,the trucks, and the world. Once again that’s a beautiful peterbilt, and keep on truckin

      The US actually got 75% of truckers to stop for 3 days and guess what happened it went to shit. Alote people dont realize what truck drivers do for the US. Its pretty sad on how they disrespect them to.

    It has its ups and downs man but nothing beats being an owner. You’ll never get Wealthy making everyone else Rich. Haven’t worked for anyone since 25. Yes there’s shitty times but you get through it. Safe travels and stay positive. 💪🏻

    Hey man, as long as the wheels are still turning I'd say its a good year. I own a hotel in Asia, not making a profit but luckly we're holdng our own through covid. Love watching you drive around my home province of Ontario... haven't seen it for a while!

    That's the life of pulling heavy. Stresses everything out daily. When I use to pull 80,000 lbs it was always just the small items with big ticket stuff every couple years. Got to work for a good carrier that knows heavy hauling ain't cheap to make a go of it. Old trucks will nickle and dime you to death. New emission trucks come with massive payment and massive repair bills once it's a couple years old. The days of buying a new ride being the answer are done.

      Gliders are still available, at least until they are all gone but there are a ton of 2020 gliders sitting on truck lots.

      Lots of gliders around. Not sure about everyone but a certain dealer wants $275,000 for theirs. Heard another place wants $220,000. Also don't know how these guys are getting away with throwing a crate motor in a truck and calling it a glider.

      Nothing but dash lights coming on nowadays. Engine lights, DEF system seem to be the main culprits.

    I'm a bit late but congrats on your success, and preparedness for those blindsides, worse case scenario at the quarry. Holy crap! My first car was a '68 Lemans and I twist the drive shaft in half from a dead stop on a steep city st. Anyway, covid rendered me nonessential but the $ been nice while focusing on you guessed it, outdoor projects. And buying a new USED pickup. I commented on your tight 3 pt turn vid with the train. That's some impressive skill. Thx for sharing your journey!

    It's never ending bud, paid my glider off in April and it was a pretty good 5 yrs, no big issues except wear and tear items. Had the 500/500/800 warranty and barely used it.
    Just dumped 9200$ into repairs over the last 2 weeks. Wheel bearings, seals, freaking spider plate cracked and broke, S cam shaft, slack adjuster, 5th wheel rebuild, fabbed up new brackets for the S cam rods, and on and on. But the old girl is right as rain now. It gets better as long as we learn from it and we get smarter. Good luck and really enjoy the vids

      Good to hear man! Yeah it’s nonstop maintenance on these things. For me, Buying an older truck means more maintenance right off the bat compared to a new truck. There’s a lot of “quick fixes” and cheap fixes on this truck that I’m slowly getting to and fixing up right. Slowly but surely in building it up to exactly the truck I want!

      @@callthemall, when it's sunny out, save up for rain, best advice my uncles gave me. I made that mistake when I was much younger, bought brand new kW, made a shit ton of money doing oversize and pissed it away as fast as I could make it. I bought two gliders in 2010, and saved every extra dime towards a maintenance account. Trucks hit 450k on miles, traded them before warranty was out. Bought the ones we have now, both in 2015, and as of November we have almost 82,000 put up for maintenance. I am keeping these trucks, no more new gliders are allowed to be built in the United States after 2020, but we might add one more in February, there's a bunch of 2020s at the dealers still. You got this man, watching your vids proves you already have the attitude, skill and respect for our line of work, be safe and Merry Christmas. Maybe I will see you on 81 in NY sometime.

    Love the vibe and the attitude towards your job, it sure will help if you fix some things yourself. I’ve been think of going out on my own but COVID sure threw a wrench in it , I know that road very well in Grand Bend Ontario ...I’m on it once every week not sure if you’ve ever been on Plank Road in Sarnia Ontario, to me that’s the worst road in Canada 🇨🇦 all the best and stay positive!!!

    Didn’t realize this until I watched this vid that was a few months old. I started my move as a O/O the exact same day you did. I signed the paperwork for my 389 that same day lol. Like you I’ve been fortunate to stay busy and had some luck. Happy trucking and keep those wheels rolling driver.

The trucking world got lucky with the covid bs, the reefer for sure, not the dry van so much tho, I heard about drivers that had to quit and go work at freaking Walmart because stores closed and there wasnt enough freight.

    I had two trucks that were as bad as owning a boat.
    One was a 6 year old freight liner century and the other a brand new peterbilt 387.
    My 379’s were expensive but they were cheap compared to those two.

    I see you load heavy, and hauling gravel roads out of pits, brother that's earning your money. I ran three trucks curtain siders, paid on volume , very light , I have to say very few breakdowns. My accountant was always questioning my repairs, he was also doing another transport operator, he had tippers, his repairs breakages horrendous.
    I never complained about maintenance, enjoying your videos.

    Good story glad to see you have things in order drivers want to jump in that seat, but don't realize the responsibility that comes with these seats. I always tell drivers if you don't have the money in the bank at least have access to the money somehow.

    Glad to see it’s your truck man. Love that truck. It’s got the looks and the engine! Also being an owner operator is the way to go. It’s all you. You own the truck and you can do what you want with it. I drive company trucks, I also drive 2 of my own trucks. All Kenworth W900Ls. I work for towing and recovery. I drive a 2000 Kenworth W900L lowboy truck, a 2005 Kenworth W900L Rotator wrecker. My trucks that I own are a ‘79 Kenworth W900A and a 2007 Kenworth W900L. The W900A is a show truck. It looks gooood. My 2007 I got recently. It has the Studio Sleeper, and a lift axle. It’s gonna pull a lowboy and a race trailer... all the trucks I drive have Caterpillar engines. High powered ones. really good engine. If I had to go with a Cummins it be the N14 of course. My 2007 is a work in progress. Hopefully by the end of this year it’ll be done. It’s all glossy black with chrome. 7 inch straight stacks. Mean truck man. Glad to see you bought this good lookin 06 Pete 379! I love Peterbilts too. My second favorite truck brand. 🤘🏼🤘🏼

      callthemall I may post videos! Be mostly guitar/ music related but I may also do truck and car videos. I have some videos of me shifting the truck and I taped my old iPhone 5s on the sleeper of the truck and recorded the pipes. Thing rolls coal and is really loud. That was 2014 though. I rescued the truck from a field down south. Me and my buddy went on a trip to Missouri to look at junkyards. Old car searching basically. We passed a grassy field and all those abandoned trucks sat. A few days later we both came back with the W900L lowboy truck and picked it up. Later on I got all the info on it and was able to own it. It’s a glossy black with a classy gold striping on the sides. Such a great old school rig

    Congratulations on your 1yr anniversary. I wish you many more safe and prosperous miles ahead. I'm just getting started myself. Bought me a '15 Columbia glider with 364k on the clock but needed work of about $10k. Paid cash plus own authority insurance at $11k for the year. Gonna try this thing called entrepreneurship. Hoping for the best.

      Got a Classic 99. I really want to run on loose leaf papers.
      Hard to find gliders with blocks 2,000 or older.
      When you find them they are over 70k

      No sense getting flustered, best thing to do is step back, take a look at the problem piece by piece, figure out what different options you have and go for it. Planning ahead in this game is huge, and I’m still afloat in the end so stressing about the past would get me nowhere!! 🤙

    I am glad that you did good at your very first year, and I hope you will do even better every upcoming year. I'm a mechanic from Iran planning to migrate to Canada and become a truck driver there. I have 3 questions that I will be glad if you answer them:
    1- is trucking better in Canada or America?
    2- does having a b-train generates more income after all extra expenses compared to a regular flatbed?
    3- why do you have that extra axle in the middle of your front trailer? Does it let you gross more legally?

      1. I can’t necessarily comment on how good it is Trucking in the states, but Canada and America are pretty similar for the trucking industry.
      2. The b-train stuff does pay more but you do have more expenses keeping the equipment up, burn more fuel, higher tolls, but I think it pays better in the end per mile.
      3. The extra axle is for Michigan. They have different axle weight laws and need more axles for the same weight. I’m going to do a video explaining this in the near future! 👍

    I ran my own for 3 yrs. Volvo vn brand new. Worked hard. No holidays. After 3 called it a day. Little reward and bills were a killer. Never again.

    One reason I gave up my tri axle dump truck . Asphalt rates in Toronto were only $78 a hr .my friends dad who we worked for took $7 a hr leaving us $71 a hr . By the time u pay for all your expenses and put money away for the winter months and maintenance fund not much left for all the risk

      Yeah, I was told if the truck can make $1000/day you’re doing alright, but always good to do more to have a bit of a cushion!

    I used to send my Dumps out to haul for other contractors. No more. Even at $90/hr it isn't worth it. I'm lucky to $45/hr before profit hauling for others before repairs and maintenance. So even if you have a Blowout on a big Floaty Steer tire, there goes 2 days profit, especially for a $972 road call plus the tire. So now they just haul Asphalt for my jobs, its much safer. Good luck to you man, just watch your excessive spending because you never know.

      Depends on the day but probably on average 400 miles a day, I don’t drive too far anymore. And it’s not too bad, though I did invest in a set of earplugs!

    I just wrapped up my 5th week as O/O, still got lots of bills to pay and things to fix but the truck is making money! No kidding about it being expensive. Big money in, big money out..

    I bought a old 2007 volvo for my 1st truck. Spend all my money my first year dumping the $ into the truck. Motor was getting old and I bought a 2nd volvo and spend my 2nd year driving my 1st truck to dump all the $ into my 2nd trucks new engine and new 5th wheel and bunch new parts and a 1999 classic freightliner project that's sitting.. but now I have 1 truck that's basically new with hardly any breakdowns.. now I can burn and earn more to now put a new engine in my 1999 classic n14 red top freightliner.. I'm now gonna get my MC authority and I got a company that'll just do my dispatching, eld and safty while I just lease on drivers and do payroll.. I'll drive my classic on the side when I want.. looking now to open a car wash or truck wash. 🚚

    How comfortable is a flattop truck long term?

      It's an 06 Pete 379, and I don't mind the flat top much at all. The two downsides I notice are less storage space, and first thing in the morning when you wake up you can't stand up to put on pants!

      Nope, was an in frame rebuild, trams was never dropped. Though it has a pretty fresh clutch in it already

    Since we don't have Peterbilt trucks in Germany and Europe, I wonder how much a new truck would approximately cost. And also how much a used one, like this with 1,000,000 miles on it, would cost.

      Most freightliners and sloped nose trucks can go for around $15’000 or so, keep adding for these nice Petes and KW’s. I’ve seen some go for around $90’000! But most are certainly less. It’s all about how well they’ve been taken care of.

      One thing to mention is, what year motor one needs. Wink, wink..
      For instance, this guy lives in Canada. There are different regulations for the HOS.

    Wow! We run tri drive loggers in British Columbia. The power divider is the weak link, but usually they break internally with no damage to the rest of diff.That's an impressive failure. Cost is so high because you don't have a core. She's f*ckered!
