Turns out you need a windows login password in Windows 11 22H2+. If you have no password, or a blank password, the SMB-connection will fail with "Wrong username or password".
Perfect! Worked for me as well. 👌 Just for those who don't have password enabled on their windows user accounts - have to enable it, otherwise leaving the pass field blank might lead to error msg like Access denied or similar. ✌

Hi so I tried this on my 2023 Mini mac and at first it worked. I successfully linked my PC to my mini mac but I have two major errors. 1st is when I made the folder on the mac it never made a desktop folder for it. I could see it in the finder though and tested it and it worked. But the biggest issue is when I reset my mac the new folder disappeared. So is this a one time thing that only works until you reset your mac or pc?
Great video! I had my password turned off my Windows computer for logging in - I had to re-enable it so the password would actually work when trying to login from my mac
Hi. Just bought a new PC running Windows 11 and want to migrate files from my iMac to the PC. I have followed your instructions very, very carefully. When I get to the part of connecting the two computers on the server, I simply cannot get past the window asking for "your name and password for the server". I have looked up my administrator name on the PC and typed that in exactly as shown and used the PC pin and that does not work. I have used my Microsoft account sign in information and that does not work either. And I have used every possible combination of that information. It's driving me crazy. Is there any way to bypass the "Registered User" way of getting the two computers to talk to each other, i.e., how do I use the "Guest" choice of the "Connect As" request. That appears to avoid the need to enter the login information. Please help. Desperate to get my new PC to finally be properly setup. Thanks so much for your help in advance.
Just as a follow up to my earlier note, I read below where you indicated that we should also check to make sure that Windows defender or some other third party software is not preventing access to the other server. I did what I thought was needed on Windows Defender as well as on my virus protection software which is called Sophos with no better results. My login attempts still failed. Very frustrating.
@@morrisreinisch4098 The only thing I can suggest is to go to the Accounts/ Sign in Options on Windows 11 and try setting it up with a pin. So if you can login to the PC using a username and pin, then try those details when you login from the Mac....

Hey there. I haven't seen that message before. Sounds like it might be a firewall block? Check if you have any rules set in Windows firewall or any third party software?
Hi there, I had the same issue but I realised it was because I didn't have a password for that account. Maybe you might have to set up a password for your windows PC ?
The folder will only be accessible if the computer is turned on. So if you want to access the file when the other computer is off, drag it out of the shared folder onto the hard drive of the computer you are connecting from.
Thanks Sir but if i have too Mac Pro and Macbook Pro but same time. I go out i didn't share the file before i go out it's okay the laptop receive file even not same network
Fantastic instructions and it worked great, thank you...Howver the Mac doesn't maintain the connection after a reboot. is this expected behaviour, or is there another step required?
After a re boot it is possible that the IP address of the computer that was closed down changed, so all you need to do is just check the ip address again.
@@Touchtechnologyreview thank you, that must be it. The solution I found was to create Aliases for the folder connections, which then look to reconnect when selecting/opening them. I don't need to reconnect manually then. 👍
Hi John, I would like to transfer a 250 Gb file from a Mac (Ventura 13.2.1) to a Windows 11 computer. The wireless transfer stops at some point --presumably due to the large file size. Would it be possible to connect both computers with a Thunderbolt cable and do a wired transfer? Thank you!
Hi Emanuel, sorry about the delay. I don't think this method would work via thunderbolt. You can connect a mac to another Mac via thunderbolt and put one into drive mode to share files across but I am not aware of a way to do it with Windows. The large 250GB file might be an issue on windows depending on the file format. Really for such a large file best thing to do is to get a spare usb drive and format it in Windows, Your Mac can then mount the drive, drag the file across, disconnect from the Mac and mount to the PC.
I was able to connect the two computers, however the shared folder does not appear on the Mac desktop. I have to use the 'Go' menu to find it under the 'Network' tab where I am then able to access it. Annoying, but at least it works.
Had the same issue. Open a finder window and then click finder on the top left and select settings. Click on the general tab and you should see a list of options regarding the items shown on the desktop. Make sure connected servers is selected and it should appear on your desktop

Thank you for your video, Do you know how to see my MacBookPro folder on the Windows 11 computer. I can see the PC folder on my Mac, however, I can not see my shared folder on my PC's network list?
This method only works if the two computers are on the same wifi network in a single location. If you travel and want to access files on the Windows computer from the Mac then you need to use the "Microsoft Remote Desktop App" which you can download on the App store on your Mac.
Does not work from Win to Mac, it has access to Mac Drive, but does not to external drive connected to mac, I don't know why. Windows sees all shared folders but has only access to Mac Main Drive

Thanks for the video, but I have a question. I am facing a problem recording data on my Mac. The problem is that there is no password for my Windows device, and I do not want to set a password or register with Microsoft data. Is there a solution to this problem?
Thanks for the video. But this means that the two laptops must be in the same location and connected to the same Wi-Fi before the file can be shared. What if one will like to give the same access to a MacBook in a different location?
You can use an app called "Microsoft Remote Access" Free on the App store. Download it on the Apple and then you have to configure it to give access to the windows computer remotely.
Thank you !! It helps a lot! However, my Mac storage is much more larger than my desktop. Is there any tutorial that to guide us to create a share folder base in my Mac rather than the window desktop ?
It can often change if you restart the PC. So if you can't connect at any point in the future you would need to check the IP address again and re enter it in the Mac.
Thank you for the detailed explanation in the video. The problem I'm facing is that Windows 10 pc is shown in Mac Sonoma but cannot connect, and Windows PC doesn't even show my Mac. Please help me with this problem both the devices are connected to the same Wifi, i have followed all the steps you've mentioned. As of now I'm facing this issue.
Quite often when this happens it has to do with the password you are entering on the Mac to access the Windows PC. Make sure you are using the correct password. At the 6 minute mark of this video I talk about the different login methods: ruclips.net/video/GNtIaiE0fWY/видео.html........ If you still can't get it to work then try my alternate method connecting to the Mac from Windows: ruclips.net/video/HjTUQ3PZk_I/видео.html
I tend to do it this way where you see the shared folder only on the Windows. I will have to look into the other way and will see if I can do a follow up on that.
I was able to follow all the steps up to selecting the file I want to pick. I see no files, is it because my pc is connected via Ethernet and my Mac is connected via internet?
computers can be connected via ethernet or wifi as long as they are on the same network, using the same router. If you can login and see the folder yet no files, perhaps you need to check the permissions have been set to allow access.
Got to part 5 when it’s asking for the password, you said it’s most likely the PC password; but my pic doesn’t have a password ? It won’t let me connect without a password
I have failed to connect from my Mac to my PC (Windows 11). I get different user names for my pc, depending on where I ask. Some names are all lower case, some are upper and lower, some have a slash after it. I use a four-digit PIN to log into my PC but I doubt that's the problem. It's the damn user name. The command prompt whoami reveals a user name that does not work.
Not that I am aware of. If you specify a share folder then that should be the only one that is shared. If you are on wifi network at work for example with multiple users, you may want to create a different user rather than use the main windows user when logging in.
Been searching this for hours. 2 years later this is still the best explained tutorial and the simplest way among others. Thanks!
For people with the password problem: Don't put your Computer's name into the "Name" field! As shown in the video, enter "whoami" into the command prompt and use the name after the backslash and your Windows login password for the server connection. God bless you, TTR!

Thank you !! It helps a lot! However, my Mac storage is much more larger than my desktop. Is there any tutorial that to guide us to create a share folder base in my Mac rather than the window desktop ?
Yes I have created a video showing you how to share a Mac folder to a Windows Computer You can see it here: ruclips.net/video/HjTUQ3PZk_I/видео.html
For some reason my Mac says read only and the permissions are read and write with full control
Well explained and easy to follow. One of the best tutorials direct an straight to the point
Great to hear. Thanks for watching and for the positive feedback!
Hello. Does the IP address assigned to the PC not change? Does it need to be assigned a static IP in the router settings first?
It can often change if you restart the PC. So if you can't connect at any point in the future you would need to check the IP address again and re enter it in the Mac.
I'm getting a Connection failed Prompt. "There was an error connecting to the server. Check the server name or IP address and try again.
@@Touchtechnologyreview I finally have connected the devices. Its working. Thank you so much for the help.
Great to hear that you got it working. @@dheerajgajjar5133
Thank you so much, it works!!!!
But is there a way to see Mac folders in my Windows?
I tend to do it this way where you see the shared folder only on the Windows. I will have to look into the other way and will see if I can do a follow up on that.
Great video! Thank you so much.
You are very welcome! Thanks for checking out the video!
Brilliant explanation - easiest video to follow by miles.
Thanks so much. Glad you found the video helpful!
Thank you so much for this man!
You are very welcome!
How do I do this if the computers are on a different network
You can get the Microsoft Remote Desktop App for the Mac and login to the Windows Computer remotely.
Can't get past the login, it keeps rejecting my username and password..
Try your email address for username. That worked for me!
@@Daniel0007729worked for me aswell. Thank you!
Thank you so much!!!! Needed to log in with my microsoft account!
I have a 15 year old Mac Mini that has mp3 files and pictures...Should I be able to use this as well?
Yes should work fine with your Mac Mini.
@@Touchtechnologyreview ok, I'll try it out when I can, thanks for responding so quick!
I get stuck on "registered user password"..not working bro, please help
Thank you, I've been trying to link my PC and Macbook and this was the easiest directions! You're awesome
You are welcome! Thanks for checking out the video!
This fixed a lot of headaches LOL. Thank you!
You're welcome!
Got to part 5 when it’s asking for the password, you said it’s most likely the PC password; but my pic doesn’t have a password ? It won’t let me connect without a password
i cant connnect to the server in the mac os
I have failed to connect from my Mac to my PC (Windows 11). I get different user names for my pc, depending on where I ask. Some names are all lower case, some are upper and lower, some have a slash after it. I use a four-digit PIN to log into my PC but I doubt that's the problem. It's the damn user name. The command prompt whoami reveals a user name that does not work.
I always get the “access to your account on this server has been denied” can anyone help?
Is there any potential security risks regarding this method? Thanks
Not that I am aware of. If you specify a share folder then that should be the only one that is shared. If you are on wifi network at work for example with multiple users, you may want to create a different user rather than use the main windows user when logging in.
