I’m a retired physical education teacher who has been hired to manage the pool store by two former teacher who is feeling totally overwhelmed by so much information but watching these videos has helped. Thanks
I live in South Florida and for the past 6 years I’ve been paying a pool company for half of the work that I was performing ANYWAY myself in the form of physically cleaning. With our newest house my wife suggested that I (just) do it all myself and save the money. Literally all that it took was this video and a trip to my local pool supply store less than a mile away. THANK YOU!!! I spent at least $100 per month, per year, for the last 6 years (not counting any extra chemical, filter, or pump costs) which totals about $7K which I could’ve used on drugs and hookers!!!
Same here, moved to Broward County last year. First time in-ground pool owner. I noticed dark streaks forming on the sides and bottom, then I started seeing small dark spots forming. The pool care knucklehead would come weekly for about 5 minutes and seemed to randomly add chemicals. I was not convinced that he had any clue what he was doing. I got tired of getting ripped off by local "pool care" companies and am educating myself so I can take proper care of my pool. Thanks for your help Matt!
I just bought a pool today, and when I tell you that finding this video, made my entire day, it did! I don't feel so intimidated by having a pool now. I feel confident that I can learn to take care of it!
73 and a first time pool owner. For over a year the water is crystal clear in my hot NC backyard. Circulation and cleaning makes keeping the chemistry easy. Circulation and cleaning is made easy by robotic vacuum for the floor/sides and cordless robotic solar skimmer for the top.
Well, ya may wanna become a chemist after thinking about - after pool is full the water stays there for 3 - 5 years. . .how many times would you share the same bath water as those you share your pool with?
Started this video. Clicked on one with a guy wearing a pool company polo. His video was just an ad for his company, so came back here and now I regret not giving you a chance at first. Very informative
This is our first year with a pool and I must say it’s been very trying! The people who shut down our pool (we moved in the fall last year) never told us to turn off the motor so when we finally figured it out, it was 2 months later. Needless to say, we needed a new motor when we opened the pool this year. We got new people to open our pool and install the motor. It’s a week later and the pool is still green! My husband took a sample to the pool store yesterday and they told him he needed 10 bags of shocks. He came home and mixed them in a bucket and walked away to clean up some debris and boom! There was a yellow cloud of smoke overhead! I was not outback with him but he was drinking a ton of water because I guess he inhaled some of the gas! He could have been killed! He said the guy in the store never explained that he should mix the shock one at a time. We are so aggravated and over this pool! We just feel like everyone who came here basically took the money and then left us to figure it out for ourselves!
Taking care of a pool can be difficult when you have no one you can trust. I recommend sticking to a single source of info. Our website is one, but you can also find a single person at the pool store who knows their stuff. It's important to have a pool mentor when you're first getting started. After that, you'll quickly become an expert. It's easy once you get the hang of it.
It's ok. Just think. You are learning something new it can be really fun and rewarding . You are learning simple water chemistry so just research, take it slow and don't beat yourself up. Happy swimming!
I just finished my first week as a pool tech. I have absolutely NO experience but I feel like I’m slowly getting the hang of it. I’m still a little nervous so I hope these videos can help ease my stress a little! Thanks 🙏🏽
What a well informed and orchestrated video. I am moving into a new house with a pool and was so nervous on how to care for them properly but after watching your video I feel like I can really do it myself! Thank you for making it so easy to understand:)
I just wanted to say Thank You Swim University...Your videos have helped me through this entire summer with my pool care. You've taught me so much. Thanks again. ️
I used to hate having to net our pool everyday, but I’ve actually found some type of peace in it. Loose the gadgets go out before you hop in the pool work up a little sweat circling the water a couple times. Pool looks good you feel good!
Been a pool guy for 7 years. I just wanted to add that all pools are different. If its a smaller pool with great circulation you can get away with running the pump 4 hours a day. And if its a huge pool with old equipment and worse circulation you will have to run the pump much longer to keep the pool nice.. old filters. improper cleaning of the filters.. type of pump .. plumbing.. valves .. can all effect circulation..
Just want to add a comment about your new brush offered in your store. I know how a cheap brush can ruin a good day. When I was a kid I was helping my dad clean the pool by brushing down the sides when we opened the pool in the spring. The cheap plastic brush broke and I cut a hole in the liner. Spend the money on good quality pool equipment. Pools liners aren’t cheap. And spending a few extra dollars on quality tools is well worth it in the end. I’ll bet my dad thinks so now. A cheap brush will cost $10. I think PUs brush was $18. I’ll spend $18.
Bro, I just bought a house here in West Texas with a nice pool, and I was kind of hesitant about doing the maintenance myself. This video is gold, my brotha!

I'm planning on buying a home with a pool, any information is greatly appreciated, thanks to you and your team, for taking the time, definitely subscribing
I'm in a similar boat. I just about 10 minutes worth of research and I concluded that the first thing I would do if I bought a house with a pool is convert it from a chlorine pool to a saltwater pool. Apparently much cheaper and easier to maintain.
Just inherited a very nice in ground pool and the seller paid for two months of pool service from a local pool company. I was hoping they'd stop by and show the basics but they just ghosted us all so it's time for me to learn to do it myself
Could you make a video on smaller pools like the 6ft Intex? How many days do you recommend before emptying and what chemicals to use? Love your vids! Thank you!
Depends on how much money you wanna spend but I personally would fill it, test it, and if anything a way out of wack adjust and then just keep a tablet or even half a tab in there all the time. Good thing is it's easy practice if you wanna mess with water chemistry but cheap to just refill if you just wanna use a tablet and refill if things get wacky.
I have been using just 6 in in 1 chlorine tablet for years and have no problem,I stop covering my pool and found out it is better for the pool to breath like the oceans do .My pH I use baking soda tablet from Walmart. I am contemplating installing an inground pool and this video just made me decide NOT to push forward with the pool. Jesus Christ didn't know a pool was this much maintenance! I found an easy way to reinstall DE filter pads that needs to be shared. I don’t do videos so perhaps you can add this to one of yours. I was one of those who struggled with getting my Hayward filter pads realigned after taking them off the manifold. There was always one or two that would leak DE back into the pool on completion. I thought one or more may have torn but it turned out the filter pads weren’t seated properly to the manifold. I found it by running the pump in the backwash mode (cover off) and seeing water leaking from several of the connections. After disassembling I turned the manifold upside down, started with the short pad and worked clockwise outside to inside making sure all pads were well seated into the manifold and there correct spacers. The hardest part was getting the long bolt back into the manifold hole and it wasn’t that bad. All in all this was a much easier task than working from the normal position and no leaks or DE back into my pool. As a side note, I almost purchased a new filter set at $100 plus.
This video was really informative and well done. Our pool guy stopped working for us so my siblings and I are giving it a try and to save some money. We are all pretty young so we are paranoid of people taking advantage of us because we don't know much about pools and their maintenance. Thank you!
I have recently purchased an above-ground pool that a pool company installed. Unfortunately, they do not provide very good instruction for pool novices. Thanks so much for your informative videos!
Matt, this is a really well-done video. I will subscribe, watching the other videos, and head over to your website, which I love without even seeing it. Great idea. Thanks for showing that at the end.
Influent pressure on the filter will be determined by a number of factors. These can be combined into Total Dynamic Head. A well designed pool 20 years ago was designed with about 50 ft. of Total Dynamic Head. Newer pools are usually in the 30-50 range (energy efficiency and greater education within the industry has improved field fabrication). If your filter is running 23 psi with NEW sand (not just clean) and your pool is staying clean and clean, no big deal, but I would suggest stepping down the impeller, or turning now the RPMs, if possible.
@@kevinmcauley Interesting. The filter was installed 2 months ago (hayward variflo xl) after dying after 4 years. Pump is 4 years old, it's a Champion ''56' frame 'Champs 115' model (I have no idea what frames) When I first turned it on it would run about 20 psi, now no matter how much I backwash it it's 23-maybe 25 (hard to read dial but it's half way to 30 or a little less. I got some 'sand filter' cleaner that you put in your pump skimmer basket, turn on briefly and let it sit. I had a very bad algae issue, and the only thing that worked was POOL RX, and I don't know how but it worked within a day lol. In another week I can clean my filter as pool rx says don't clean it for at least 2 weeks as the minerals circulate. 16.5k gal pool, I got the blue one for $80. My life is so much better now haha. I'll look into impeller and rpm, but I think it's a fixed rpm. Maybe the impeller can be adjusted, not sure. Out in TN everyone closes pool about mid October, so not too much longer for me anyway. Thanks for the tips!
@@TTSetters The variflo is your Filter Valve model. the filter is probably a Hayward Pro-Series (although there is not much PRO about them, good for a backyard pool though) if it is Grey plastic with a line down both sides from the vacuum mold process. When backwashing the filter you want to achieve 15 gallons per minute of flow per square foot of filter area (15 gpm/sf). for a 24" sand filter this is usually around 45 gallons per minute. to do this, make sure the impeller and debris traps are clean before backwashing. if the pressure is staying 2-3 psi HIGHER than when the sand was new it is time to degrease it. If this does not work, it it is time to replace the sand (once at 5 PSI increase. The sand wears down over time, so it compacts more tightly, which causes the water to bore a channel, rather than be filtered. Proper degreasing means opening it up and soaking the sand in degreaser for 6 to 24 hours. Sounds like you can wait and make it a fall project. the pump info you gave is actually for the motor (Y56 is a frame size, 115 is the name plate voltage). most residential pumps use Y48 motor frames, unless they are TEFC, and most Y56 frame motors are 230 volts, so not sure what you have there, but its been a long time since ive seen a champion branded motor.
@@kevinmcauley Thanks for the info! I did buy some sand filter cleaner, going to do that somewhat soon. It's getting near end of season so I may just wait and do that when open it next year :)
Thanks for this. I have a question; you mentioned you like to keep the jets at about 8 o clock, but you also mentioned that the water should be turning clockwise, right? Wouldn't pointing the jets at 8 o'clock make the water run counterclockwise? Or am I wrong? Thanks
AMEN on the robotic pool cleaner! That has got to be THE BEST investment for anyone with an in-ground pool to maintain. And spend a little cash here, you will DEFINITELY be glad you did! Guaranteed, 100% you WILL LOVE IT!!!!
Hi i brought a 10ft bestaway pool and wondered what air thing is on top of the pump? Do i not need to mess? Also does anyone know how much chlorine tablets to use in that floater thing.
also not just your pressure gauge but check your flow if you still have really great flow you could probably go a bid longer before back flushing your sand. because sand doesn't clean as well after being back flushed and washed/rinsed.
This is very helpful. I'm surprised. I clean pools and got curious of more tips and it's just nice to hear it all out on basics. THANK YOU for the video.
question: i have seen people not going inside the pool while cleaning but ...i have been cleaning while inside the pool because i find it a lil more easy. is it safe for me to continue cleaning the pool while i am inside the pool?
great info, but as a beginner I have not idea of where all these things you talk about are located in my pool. maybe a little more reference of where they are usually located. thanks
Hi. I'm definitely looking into purchasing your 300 Page book! Quick question though. When you say shock weekly, do you do a full shock or like a half a shock or what? Also do you have use the clarifier weekly to clear up the shock thank you.

Thanks
First time pool owner. This helped so much
You guys focus on below ground pools, what about above vinyl pools? There’s a little bit of difference with vinyl and pump systems.

So helpful - thank you!
You're so welcome!
My guy just raised his fee to 125 per month. I have a salt pool. I will tackle it myself. It looks simple as long as you keep up with the schedule.
AMEN on the robotic pool cleaner! That has got to be THE BEST investment for anyone with an in-ground pool to maintain. And spend a little cash here, you will DEFINITELY be glad you did! Guaranteed, 100% you WILL LOVE IT!!!!
Totally agree!
just don't leave it in your pool 24/7...chloride DESTROYS everything
Thanks. I just bought an above ground pool. This video is very helpful
Great videos! Why shock weekly if all your testing stays in the parameters? I heard it was hard on the plaster if done too much.
Just had a pool installed in Spain great tutorial thank you I’m gonna get your handbook
Just curious..would these be the same steps from Day 1 after a pool is installed and the pool is now full of water?
Hi i brought a 10ft bestaway pool and wondered what air thing is on top of the pump? Do i not need to mess? Also does anyone know how much chlorine tablets to use in that floater thing.
also not just your pressure gauge but check your flow if you still have really great flow you could probably go a bid longer before back flushing your sand. because sand doesn't clean as well after being back flushed and washed/rinsed.
My first year owning a pool I spent a tons on chemicals. Now I only use liquid bleach and baking soda. Pools always clear in PA.
Rick Artuso baking soda??
Lluvia Vanessa21 Use baking soda to raise your alkaline levels of your PH is low.
New pool owner very helpful

Perfect!
great info, but as a beginner I have not idea of where all these things you talk about are located in my pool. maybe a little more reference of where they are usually located.
thanks
This video made my day. Thank you
How often do you change the filter to your pool?
Thank you. I’m trying to have my own business.
I was told we should shock 2 x a week in the hot summer months. Is that accurate? I’m in Texas and it’s 100+ degrees.
Do you have a video on opening and filling your pool for the first time?
Hi. I'm definitely looking into purchasing your 300 Page book! Quick question though. When you say shock weekly, do you do a full shock or like a half a shock or what? Also do you have use the clarifier weekly to clear up the shock thank you.
Your contents are very helpful. Thank you very much.
hey might also set up a tent next to the pool
Question should the filter be on when where inside de pool? I'm new just set up our pool so excited
