    It's a shame that the adoption of this rifle would've been so expensive that Germany had to choose between the G11 and reuniting the country.

    • @floofy_wolfe383

    • @Heinz1g
      @Heinz1g 6 лет назад +236

      It wasnt top expensive, the germans just didnt need another billion Dollar contract for the Bundeswehr, when the great enemey, the ussr collapsed. So there was no need and the money could be spend in a better way, like reuniting the east with the west

    • @CrniWuk
      @CrniWuk 6 лет назад +77

      There have been many reasons why it wasn't adopted. The cost of the system wasn't the only reason, just more like the nail in the coffin for the project. For example, the G11 meant a whole new amunition system, since the NATO chose the Belgian 5,56 x45 mm developed in the late 1970s as standard ammunition. The other issue was the complex mechanic inside the G11, compared to your standard assault rifle of the time. The inner mechanics can be seen in detail here:
      ruclips.net/video/QGKcvM2Hh4g/видео.html
      Not exactly something you dissasamble in the field in the middle of a fire fight really. The video by ForgottenWeapons in the link also talks about the issues that come with caseless ammunition.
      There was also the issue of carrying the ammunition, since the stripper clips are rather large. The gun it self has the option to carry two aditional clips on the top of the weapon but I could still see potential issues here.
      No nation, has ever chosen to go down that route with their fire arms, outside of a few very rare prototypes and there are very good reasons for that.

    A brief translation of the narration, feel free to put it up as subtitles for this vid:
    The G11 was made by Heckler and Koch as a next-gen assault rifle.
    The greatest feature of this unique, streamlined firearm is its ability to fire caseless ammunition.
    Caseless ammunition itself is lightweight and therefore enables soldiers to carry a large amount of ammunition. As there is no need for ejecting spent casings, this gun is also ambidextrous even in its bullpup configuration.
    As a firearm that bears possibilities for the future of the assault rifle genre, the G11 has attracted an enormous amount of attention and is currently being tested in Germany and the US.

    • @0neDoomedSpaceMarine
      @0neDoomedSpaceMarine 6 лет назад +27

      @@swangdangeryeet3389 It wasn't banned, it's just that the Cold War was over and the Warsaw Pact as a threat stopped existing, and West Germany (now just Germany), not only got a gigantic surplus of AK74s from the dissolution of East Germany, they also were looking at spending lots of money on fixing East Germany up after being a Communist hellhole for a decades.
      The expensive G11 was seen as just really not that necessary, and it was instead decided that the Bundeswehr could settle on a more conventional modern infantry rifle, which would be the H&K G36, an AR18 derivative with a plastic body.
      It's not an excellent rifle by any means, but also not horrible, and it was rather cheap, which is what Germany was looking for.
      For what it's worth, I think that if the G11 had actually gone into widespread service, a lot of its deficiencies would come to light, and that would be a headache and a half, so given the circumstances, the G36 was an ok choice for a new rifle.

    • @0neDoomedSpaceMarine

      @A M A Z O Field stripping was easy, you could just take off the front and the back. The issue would be detail stripping (which honestly I think trying to take the action itself apart should count as).
      I don't really think the soldier was supposed to take it apart very much in the field, however, but that is very much a point against it in my opinion, because an infantry rifle needs to be some degree of idiot proof, like an M16 or AKM.

    I have to say, maybe I'm crazy, but I think the G11 still has a lot going for it. If you're on a secret squirrel op, then one of the things that most people don't think of, is the empty brass you leave behind. Depending on the mission, from what I heard, the Tier 1 guys, and their counterparts worldwide, use rifles most commonly used the the Area of Operations they're infiltrating, using caseless rounds, along with fragmenting bullets, means you don't leave much behind you have to worry about policing up. a couple comments: "it has huge recoil"
    fire 200+ grain bullets, you wont say the g11 has huge recoil once you fire a shot of a 200+ grain bullet (i fire 350-360 grain bullets out of my 54 caliber muzzleloader, and the g11 seems like nothing for recoil compared to a short and light 54 caliber gun)

    • @kurt9894
      @kurt9894 6 лет назад +4

      where did you find that info? every source i find confirms a 52 grain bullet in 4.73x33 which appears to be the heaviest of the experimental rounds.

    • @UnDeaDCyBorg
      @UnDeaDCyBorg 6 лет назад +9

      I think he meant that the recoil wouldn't feel heavy anymore once you fired something 200+ ? Not that I know I've never shot anything in my life. I can't tell if the combined recoil of 3 bullets would actually be the recoil of a 3x as heavy load.

    • @0neDoomedSpaceMarine

      The recoil is something you would apparently kind of get used to. Mind that the G11 was also a very lightweight rifle, weighing not even 5lbs fully loaded, if I remember right.
      A lighter gun means more recoil for the same cartridge.
      You do have the three round burst, which at 2100rpm, all bullets leaving the barrel before the recoil impulse hits your shoulder, this having like 150grs of mass coming back, with all their speed combined to 9000fps, ergo over 3000 foot pounds of energy.
      The entire action of the gun recoils into the stock, to absorb recoil, and you REALLY need this function when firing the 3 round bursts.

    Just reading wikipedia about this gun. It's burst mode can fire 36 rounds PER SECOND. Designed so that it will fire those 3 rounds perfectly straight, and only THEN does the recoil kick in. This thing is nuts.
    1:20 It may look like it's firing single shots here, but from what i understand these are actually super fast 3-round bursts. That's not an echo you're hearing, they are 3 separate rounds!

Some engineers went to Spain to evade capture. But altogether H&K is/was the most innovative firearms company. Have the chance to take apart a p7 and a singer sewing machine and you will see the similarities. I don’t know if anyone has made this comparison. However their is a connection.
