I hope this is the new standard for Blue Note going forward. Every Tone Poet release has been amazing and better sounding than just about anything in the catalog. Kudos to Don Was for steering the ship in this direction.
I think this is going to be the new standard for all the Old Jazz labels going forward !. I mean yes you are still going to have some bad presses of Louie A or Chet B around. but this is going to be where the focus is.
After the QC debaucle that was the 75th Anniversary pressings, Blue Note had to get this right. I am loving these titles and the overall quality is definitely a benchmark.
Kevin Gray no words to describe this man’s talent Having said that, having what to work with helps too Those recordings are pure works of art, true masterpieces.
Big Thanks to the passionate guys for making this happen! You really do the BN legacy justice with the Tone Poet Series. And the quality of the 80th Anniv. Series pressed in Europe is fantastic as well. Great times for us vinyl jazz lovers!!
Amazing sound these Tone Poet releases. Straight from the master tapes played on a wonderful Studer A80 master reel to reel. Top notch! A dream job!! I own already 13 Tone Poets and busy to collect as I will buy the whole catalog for my collection
I love the Blue Note Tone Poet Series everything but the inner sleeves! I wish they would go with a rice paper sleeves like MoFi or Quality Record Pressings/Analog productions.
Hats off to you guys! You’ve really gone above and beyond! I absolutely love the pressings and the quality - but more importantly I love the albums that you’ve been picking out, bringing attention to so many overlooked, under appreciated titles! Thank you.
I have been very pleased with every Tone Poet I have. Clean, flat, weighty platters. Heavy duty jackets. Impeccable mastering. RTI hardly ever disappoints in pressing them. I can't say the same for Sloptimal and the Classic Blue Notes though.
picked up my first ever blue note from the store down the street this Christmas. I have only listened to about 50 records from the store, but this blue note 1577 is the best record I have ever heard. I will religiously order directly from this company from now on.
Nice to see the people behind it. I just received my copy of Introducing Kenny Burrell. It sounds fantastic! Now I finally know there's nothing wrong with my system :) It was just the other crappy LP's I was spinning on my table. Kudo's to this initiative. It's nice to be able to buy audiophile records for a very reasonable price. Love the package as well.
I really love the Tone Poet offering. It’s amazing value for money. Even the 80th anniversary stuff is amazing, but a step down in jacket quality. I buy the new records when I’m able to.
I bought already a few but definitely will buy the whole poet catalog no matter the price. Music history at its analogs best, straight from the Studer R2R! Amazing work and quality guys! Audiophile top notch!!
“A stylus dragging through vinyl, shouldn’t work, but it does.” Spot on! No matter how many times it’s explained to me, phonographic playback is basically magic. I can’t grasp how and why it works. Even if you could reproduce some sounds, the part that’s magic to me is the fidelity of the playback. It’s just magic. And people should stop pretending like they really understand it. They don’t. It’s magic.
This exactly mirrors my philosophy but there are certain "audio experts" who would have some rather uncomplimentary words to describe this and insist that "digital is superior" and that I and others like this are idiots.
Great video, seeing the real people behind the process. Great to see this all in action, and described by the experts themselves. Interesting insight to their world. I hope the knowledge is passed on :)
Am I the only one though who would have liked to have the original standard covers (still glossy, sturdy and tip on) without a printed barcode, maybe with photos of the sessions as an inner booklet? A bona fide reproduction as to say. I know that many collectors love the way they are (different), but I bet that some others would love to have a reproduction of the originals (it would also cut the costs to make a non gatefold cover). Just like the Diskunion or Classic Records reissues. That's just my feedback. Soundwise they're perfect.
props that you say that van gelders recordings always had a little mid boost; I was always thinking I was the only one hearing this^ and what mr. grays says is true: if you master analog then don't mix with digital, and when you master digital stay digital. I am a fan of good sound; digital and analogue !
I have five titles from this series and love every one of them. Well done Don and Joe! Hopefully we see a re-issue of John Coltrane's Blue Train in this series.
Amos Lee "Supply And Demand" please. There's nothing wrong with our old copy except we play it so often we would like to have an extra copy on standby! Other than that, please keep going the way you are going.
Is it true that (John Coltrane) Blue Train stereo version is not identical to the mono version? The Mono was originally for monitoring? It looks like the picture on the front cover is different from the Stereo vs Mono?
Unfortunately I’ve had to return several of the Blue Note Classic releases (in the last month - speak no evil, night dreamer, maiden voyage). These releases have come with the same kind of digital sounding buzzing (at the same place upon playback - I.e it’s not my record player) I strongly feel that Blue Note is letting down Alfred Lyon, Rudy Van Gelder, as well as all the great artists and not to mention fans! Don’t release faulty vinyls Blue Note! Recall them! Do not continue to sell them if they have faults! If customers report faults, replace them immediately! It’s a real disappointment to people such as myself who has been a fan for 25 years. It’s a smear upon a beautiful old legacy. Fix it coz it’s not good enough!
I really hope those master tapes are in a fireproof vault.
Or a nuclear bunker.
Agree it’s scary to see the whole invaluable catalog just on one shelf like that
And water proof
I hope this is the new standard for Blue Note going forward. Every Tone Poet release has been amazing and better sounding than just about anything in the catalog. Kudos to Don Was for steering the ship in this direction.

Bravo gentlemen! Analog rules!
Those tapes from the 50’s and 60’s are absolutely magical
Kevin Gray no words to describe this man’s talent
Having said that, having what to work with helps too
Those recordings are pure works of art, true masterpieces.
I've bought every Tone Poet release since watching this. And YUP they are superb! Loved watching this again and being inspired.
The Tone Poets Reissues are a great series. At this moment I have 20 Tone Poet records.
Thanks to the work of all these people, the new generations will be able to know, appreciate and love jazz.
Swingin' At Sugar Ray's in the intro! Nice! 😎
In love with this series。
so happy a company as big as Blue Note sees the value in doing things right. other labels need to take note :)
Don Was is a genius and so are all the people he surrounds himself with
Great respect for this amazingly talented producer
Thanks for sharing the process .
Very Nice!!!!!
Big Thanks to the passionate guys for making this happen!

@6:40 mark. Yes, Kevin Gray, yes!
Thank you!

Stanley Turrentine and Shirley Scott playing throughout the video is just amazing.

I'll spend all my money for this series. Great job!

Amazing
FACTS. Thank you Joe Harley!
Loved every minute of it and thank you for doing this. Just wished it was longer ;)
Put in my order for the January titles this morning.
Great Video !!
BarakaPDub
Great series, I’m buying them all, at least trying too
Worth every penny
I really love the Tone Poet offering. It’s amazing value for money. Even the 80th anniversary stuff is amazing, but a step down in jacket quality. I buy the new records when I’m able to.
Love the Tone Poet series and loved this video! Thanks for the sneak peek behind the scenes!
Salute to Don Was, for his love of music..............!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Amazingly done all-analog issues. Glad there are some more 80th and Tone Poets to come and can't wait what's next for 2021
Appreciate you guys doing these tone poets. Can’t afford the music matters but love good quality music. These are great.
And I wait when u make reel tapes. I with pleasure buy this music on tape.
Got to hang with Don Was a few times! Great Video!
To think of all the wonderful records that are still awaiting a tone poet reissue
Would love for Blue Note to do every release or re-issue's like this in the future. They deserve it.
Amen bro!!
All titles SHOULD be done in this fashion,......................
Joe Harley is being modest when he says that both approaches(RV Gelder's and his own) are right. To me whoever is closer to the master tape is right.
Excellent
Amazing!
Super cool!
Great video, seeing the real people behind the process. Great to see this all in action, and described by the experts themselves. Interesting insight to their world. I hope the knowledge is passed on :)
Tone Poet series sounds much better compared to BN80 series. Great job guys!

I don't care that they're expensive. Some things are worth it.
Lol - I've been hearing Rick Hashimoto's name for a long time. That is not what I expected him to look like. (Can I still say that?) :o
So glad to see they are not using DMM but lacquer masters instead. Hopefully they won't run out of supplies soon.
props that you say that van gelders recordings always had a little mid boost; I was always thinking I was the only one hearing this^

Coming soon!!!
YES!
Joe !
badass
Whims of Chambers, please!!!
By god imagine standing in that room
keep em coming pls! The quality of these TP and the 80th anniversary pressings are just incredible.
Word!
Can I work there?
I’d have no pay check, would be spent on the vinyl
Amos Lee "Supply And Demand" please. There's nothing wrong with our old copy except we play it so often we would like to have an extra copy on standby! Other than that, please keep going the way you are going.
Is it true that (John Coltrane) Blue Train stereo version is not identical to the mono version? The Mono was originally for monitoring? It looks like the picture on the front cover is different from the Stereo vs Mono?
Alfred Lion, Francis Wolff, Rudy Van Gelder, Reid Miles, and Blue Note Records. That's _my_ five basic elements.
Please could you reissue Andrew Hill's "Passing Ships" on vinyl! Tx!
Anyone know the tune at 8:54?
omg what is the song right at the very end ? i know it but cant think and its killing me
Take the barcode off the jacket. It kills the back cover.
You had plans to release the same titles that MMJ release? like Blue Train?
i would easily sell my house for these
Peter Sellers disguised.
I know digital has it's purposes, but I always hated the digital keyboards that replaced analog in the 80s, and there's a reason behind that..
Same quality than the MMJ thiefs and costs less, MMJ are overpriced.
Well MMJ has to pay to access their titles
