I was wondering where the screws holding the bottom on were. I was going put a power supply to make so it doesn't need batteries, but I needed to get inside it to perform surgery. This answered my question.
Great video! Thanks for keeping it well focused, unlike others I've viewed. I got this same model and am looking to repair/ replace the sluggish joy stick. Any part numbers for the micro switches ? Also thinking of drilling & installing a 6 VDC PSU connector to save on batteries. Will jumper one in first to see if it still works. lol
Jakks made a dc power adapter that fits into the battery slot. I have every namco one the made including the wireless ms pac man. They are fantastic products, I took my duplicate ones in bad shape and made two arcade cabinets. I still have two busted ones left.
Thank you for the screw finding technique! Totally thought it was one-way clipped together. The variable resistor seems to brighten the video output, with the consequence of distortion if set towards the extremes. (It must regulate the intensity indirectly somehow, possibly even causing an amp to run outside its operating range.) PS. In my case, the video output was distorted (looked like synchronization issues, as if it were outputting PAL onto an NTSC.) I traced it down to a design fault: 4 AA batteries hardly have the voltage to run the unit! Only a 100% fresh set will do (if even)... The batt compartmemt mentions 6VDC, when most AAs run at 1.2V (×4 = 4.8V) Sure enough, a 9V DC converter seemed to do the trick without causing noise issues nor over-voltage faults :P Looks like I'll be running off mains until I figure out a li-ion solution :)
Can you link me to what you used? I just picked one of these up at the goodwill store and the screen is just pink and I put 4 double AA's and the led slowly dies out.
Superb video, thank you. I always thought the stick on this was pretty good, mine is still working now. I like the fact the gate as the notches in it so when your going "LEFT" for example, you cannot go anywhere else. Am I wrong in thinking this is better than the generic Sanwa "diamond" restrictior?
bit disappointing that it uses chip-on-board , I suspect one of them is the memory - it would be interesting to hook up digital analyser to this and see what's happening on the bus.
Is the ferrite ring necessary to filter noise? The video quality on my box started to deteriorate so I tried taking the box apart to fix it, but I don't really know what I'm doing and made it worse... I just get a pink screen now but the main menu audio still works (individual game audio doesn't work). I'm thinking about getting new RCA cables and resoldering but I'm not sure if the ferrite ring is necessary. I've also seen other comments about a common ground problem? Any advice for a novice? Thanks so much!
Sean Keenan the included rca cabling is terrible. They are easily replaced as long as you make sure the shielding doesn’t contact the center conductor. Ferrite was added to reduce static and video blurring.
@@d3115uxor you're the man, thanks for the reply. Have you tested the video quality without the ferrite ring? Does it sound like my issues should be resolved by soldering on new cables?
Sean Keenan unfortunately, the cables on my unit were eaten by rats when I got it. So I immediately swapped cables. However, when I test fired with the damaged original cables, my screen was glitchy and solid green. I’m still around RUclips but haven’t posted videos since all I get is dumbass kids trolling me in comments.
@@d3115uxor This happened to my unit too, got it from an estate sale bundle. Everything works but the video is all glitched out, green and pink everywhere! Is there an easy and specific way to fix this? I'm a total n00b at repairing electronics too, but would like to try. Thanks!
I just dug up one of these. Left and right joystick controls work, but up and down do not. I even tried tearing it apart and manually jumping the up and down solder pads to ground, but still had no response. Is there something wrong with the processor chip?
thanks for this, my audio went on mine and I can tell its because of the cable because if I push on it it comes back on sometimes briefly, after seeing this it will be easy to open it up and swap out cables.
Hello! A friend of mine has lost the screw that blocks the battery door (the one you see at minute 01:04) and can not find an exact replacement. Could you kindly measure it and let me know the size? Or at least take a digital photo of the screw next to a ruler for reference? Thanks!!!! :) :)
that plastic box is long gone. its just plastic, use a drywall screw or something lol!. this little game resides in an arcade cabinet now, check out that video!
There is barely any documentation regarding these plug n play consoles, Do you know if they are capable of carrying either stereo composite or an RGB signal? Thanks.
perhaps the round chips arefor covering up the real data chips to avoid piracy as for the reason nobody has thought of dumping the tv games but there is still a chance as if we can rip those cover chips out and decompile the real thing.
I have one with a short in the video cord and it's pissing me off ..... had it since I was like 6 or 7. Wiring a vehicle is les stressful than this.....
its a simple childs toy... however, if you want to reflash the unit, it is possible! the unfortunate bit is that you will have to study up on JTAG programming
hi, i got a few of those lying around, also thinking about building a small arcade cabinet with it. I wanna use the original joystick though, but i have no idea how to get the balltop from the joystick off... looks like its glued or something... anyone has any idea?... thnx
If yer gonna go to the effort of building a counter-top cab... get an old PC and install MAME on it.. and buy a complete commercial grade joystick console panel. b(^_^)
Annoying thing about these plug and plays is the design.. buttons are on the wrong side. Joystick is on the right and the buttons are on the left, making these very awkward to use.

i still have this for like 10 years now and its still works the only down side it when you move the joystick up it won't go up
Lmao, okay so it doesn’t actually work right. If you can’t move up, the machine is practically useless
Dude I’ve been wondering my whole life if those ones come apart
Looking on how to repair my old Namco Mrs. Pac-Man version and my Disney Plug and play.
This helped a bit, thank you
Great video!

I opened this thing up and when I closed it properly it wouldn’t turn on. The black wire somehow detached and I can’t get it in the right place again.
Very fascinating

*NO*

Nice ring, I had the same one till some scumbag stole it, titanium right?

Did it work?
Anyone what version of Dig-Dug is on this thing?
Does not look/sound like the Arcade version.
Thanks.
all of the games on the various Jakks pacific plug and plays were custom ports made to work with the proprietary chip sets
@@XlembrosI’m pretty sure it uses a SPG240 chipset by the Taiwanese company Sunplus.
Mine was fine but sound Ok but distorted figures!!!! What can I do?
RCA Jacks work fine
So much for adding a dip socket, and adding a different game rom. They have those stupid epoxy blobs.
super merci j ais pu réparer

if you look closely at the switches, they are readily available parts on digikey and mouser
WHAT BATTERIES DOES IT TAKE
AA bateries dude, the usual
Great tips!
How do u fix the button if its broken
Maria Garcia it’s just a simple momentary push button, you can solder any button you like into the board!

If all turns on, but no sound or video from mine, can it be the rca cables and if so can it be swapped out?
Mr. Chihuahua yep. If you know how to solder, swap both rca cables with something a bit beefier
