- In 2004, Jakks Pacific released what might be the best plug and play system. Based on the SpongeBob show, this 5-in-1 joystick released prior to the first movie, which for many reflects the series peak. There's no denying the heart and charm in these simple, enjoyable games.

Nothing makes you feel old like seeing your kid's old toys featured on things like this.
And realizing you haven't seen it in 20 years in my case at least.
@@Marcomanexists i got it around 7, im 21 now
Man when I was a kid I literally played this thing till it broke. I remember I was able to clear SpongeBob's bubble pop, Patrick and the maze and the super chum bucket multiple times, but the other two mini games were just way too hard and tedious for me to finish. Super Chum Bucket was easily my favorite
mine had the nose broke in half 😂 i still played it though even though i'd occasionally stab my hand on accident
I feel like everyone forgets about the 2.0 version of this plug in play. It has different games, except it still has the breakout clone. It had a snowball fight game (like worms) and a Jellyfish evading game. Updated graphics too.
Is there any video footage of that one!?
@@CosmicSponge2004 Yes on youtube its called "Plug n Play Games: Spongebob Squarepants Jellyfish Dodge". A direct link would probably get locked
I had 2 of them as a kid, just as you described
THAT’S IT. That’s the one I had, and still have. I never knew about this one here, though, so I assumed the video would talk about what you are explaining.
The game is called Spongebob Jellyfish Dodge, I have it!
It's a crime that this isn't emulated in MAME yet
EDIT: Also Fry Cook Games is actually really good. So much content in that Plug and Play. It even saves your high scores and has MULTIPLAYER.
I had both of these as a kid!!
I had this exact one but i somehow broke the "nose" stick and it was just a small nub with razor sharp edges. 7 year old me didn't care, i got through the maze with literal blood, sweat, and tears. Sweet victory!
You didn’t have blood, sweat, or tears
@@BagzAndPresident is this Bagz or Ross talking
It is my life goal to eventually be able to say "Yeah, FrameRater" at the start of one of these videos
You can submit one in the Discord. 😁
@@FrameRateri need to make one that’s like the old Frederator cartoon bumper.
FRAMerUr RATERrrr
does each video have a different intro voice line by a fan ?
@@FrameRater I thought it's all your voice lmao
Didn’t even know a second version existed with music, that’s pretty cool actually.
And for that Patrick Maze game, you can complete a character’s challenge three times until they disappear. I managed to finish all of them & beat the game some years back.
The second version has the first game listed, but with different power ups, graphics, and simply looks better
I played the hell out of the Super Chum Bucket when I was a kid, this entire plug n play was an essential part of my childhood
Most plug and plays I saw around this era were sludgy awful famiclones. This seems... perfectly decent for a kid? The art looks well done and colourful, and it looks like they all play okay, limited as they may be.
I remember playing these and the controls weren't bad or annoying. None of the games are that interesting or even that good but considering I was 3 or 4 when I played them they did the job. I had no idea most of the games were clones as it was my first time seeing a videogame. They were all functional and really fun given how young and inexperienced with games I was
Woke up one Christmas morning and this is what my mom got me. One of the best Christmas gifts I could have gotten at that time. I can remember plugging it in and playing all day
This is the first plug and play I owned and this unlocked so many core memories of mine.
Core memories? Trend nerd
@@BagzAndPresident Ah, I remember my edgelord phase. Good thing I grew out of it, and I know you will too. Besides, "formative memories" doesn't roll off the tongue as well.
My first was Pac Man Plug n play...
A lot of people seem to like the Batman one too. It's neat how many systems used SPG2xx hardware. Also, fun fact:
The hardware for these things is so similar to the V. Smile that you can chuck their ROMs into a V. Smile emulator and they'll boot. Controls don't work, but the audio and video are fully functional.
I'll be damned. Holy shit, lol Thats news to me.
I did get a 100% complete of Patrick in the Maze, back in my kid age. Did it once many years ago, still have the memory though.
Seeing this plug n play was one hell of a nostalgic blast, i remember playing that tons, but lost it, ever since then ive been hunting for it, but always ended up finding the later 2009 plug n play, which has an almost identical controller
The memories this video brought back were super special. This console was the first videogame I ever played back when I was 3 or 4 years old. I remember sitting in my parents basement on those giant old TV"s. My 2 favourites were the Patrick maze and DK clone (although I had no idea it was a clone of anything). I liked the Sandy one too but I couldn't get past that same part lol. Thanks for making this, I hadn't thought of this game in 20 years.
For anyone who doesn't know Jakks Pacific was founded by the same guy who founded LJN...
LJN?
This was quite the nostalgia trip. Definitely had a lot of fun playing the Patrick Maze game. I believe out of all of the games, I've only finished The Super Chum Bucket.
Overall, pretty cool to see a review of this Plug n' Play.
I had gotten the Jellyfish Dodge Plug N Play when I was a kid and I still have it to this day. Snowball Showdown was one of my favorites from the selection of games.
The memories! I had this as a kid but this is my first time seeing any footage from it in years. The nostalgia is real right now.
I didn't know about the bootleg version of this thing lol. Kinda wonder if that one even has footage of what's on it.
Update: Its called the Super 15 in 1. There is a channel that has gameplay footage of all the things on it, as well an article on the bootleg games wiki.
The sprites in "Sandy's Surf Adventure" remind me alot of her song in "Atalantis SquarePantis" with the small pixel style
I had one, and one that looked like Darth Vader as a controller
This is so cool! Cool video, for sure subbed and liked and cant wait for more!
i remember having this as a kid! it’s such a charming little bundle and it’s so nice to see it again, and with such an earnest and sweet review of it all to boot! man now i miss all my childhood spongebob toys lol
Got it for Christmas 2004 wish their was a way to emulate it me and my sister got so far in the chumbucket game I remember tossing the console across the room when I lost
Loved this as a kid, thanks for sharing
Great vid! Played through these before Cosmic Shake released this year. Fun times!
Used to love this plug-n-play as a kid, particularly the patrick maze and chum bucket games. I remember I had a thing of calling the robot enemies of the latter 'munching mike'. No clue why.
The warrenty itself has some sense of humor. Someone definantly had fun making them.
Also, with the Super Chum Bucket game.... What will Plankton achieve for squirrle-napping Sandy? Why the piss cake would Sandy know anything about Plankton wanting the Krabby Patty formula? Shouldn't Plankton kidnap Mr Krabs instead since he is a rival and former best friend to Plankton?? That would make more sense than "Well, I'll squirrle-nap Sandy Cheeks and bribe Spongebob into giving me the secret formula."
Plankton isn't that smart, even his computer wife Karen knows that. Shocking that she didn't break up from that mental case, and no, Karen 2.0 technically doesn't count.
This is crazzyy I had this as a kid growing up you just brought back memories man 🥺🥺🥺🥺
Got that for Christmas that year was lots of fun
had this when i was younger. prob still around the house somewhere lol. never threw it away.
"Patrick And The Maze" was my favorite one.
Now, where have _I_ seen that device before? *rewatches old FrameRater plug-n-play video*
Oh my gosh, that old Spongebob TV brought back so many memories! I played some Spongebob plug and play snowball game vs my mother on that thing.
I remember one of my friends back in 3rd grade had the menu theme variant of this game. We would take turns and play the games together. Good days
We used to have this exact game along with the Pineapple House version. Had them well up until the 2010s gathering dust in the entertainment stand. The cords had long since broke where the cord meets the casing.
Omg i remember having one of these and playing it in the back of my moms trailblazer cause it had rgb plugins for the mini tv
I was gifted 2 of these as a kid. I also had that one you mentioned during sandys game that reused the music.
SAME
You blew my mind by showing me that there are more then one stages in Sandy's Surf Adventure. Up until this point, I assumed it was an endless game. Even more sad, that was my favorite game on the plug and play and was my introduction to shmups.
Nice video, I've been curious about this one. A good cheap (in price) Pac-Man Plug & Play system is Pac-Man Connect & Play. It was released in 2012 I think and comes with 12 games. Most of them are ones that have been re-released many times, but it's one of the very few ways to play Pac-Man Plus. Outside of emulation, it's probably the cheapest way to play it too.
I remember having this! To explain the striped color banding in Patrick's maze, it has to do with how the NTSC signal is being drawn from the hardware. Your recorder picked up what is known as a visual artifact resulting from a 70-year-old video standard.
I loved this plug and play sm, we had it in our house for years until it just stopped working lol, it was one of the few games my folks actually bought for me, and seeing this again was such a nostalgic hit AGH so good
My cousin had this one, I remember playing it all the time as a kid, along with the SpongeBob CD ROM game. Though, I never owned this one, the Scooby Doo Plug N Play is probably the best one in my opinion. SO much nostalgia😂 thanks for giving back the good memories!❤
When I was little my sister and I had Plug and Play consoles from Christmas. I had a Spiderman one and I think my sister had the Spongebob one. It brought back really great memories seeing the Spongebob Plug and Play on RUclips. After we got those plug and game consoles we gotten the Gamecube and later the Wii. Those plug in games were fun.
i loooved this thing as a kid!
Man this bright back some memories, I had the jellyfish dodge one back when I was a kid. I just recently pulled it out of storage and found high scores on the bubble pop game from over 15 years ago. You gotta make sure you don’t leave the batteries in these or else they will corrode bad over time.
Dude this just opened a memory in my head that hasn’t been opened in over 20 years👏👏
I haven't seen these games in like 15 years. Thank you.
Man what a throwback
This was my jam as a kid!
Man the nostalgia. On my old one If you press in on the nose sorta hard it bends the pcb inside and messes with the collision, color and sound in some of the games.
I loved this thing so much
had this as a kid. so sick.
This brings back memories! 😭
Loved this thing
I’m about to tear apart my room & basement looking for this & the Avatar one
Crazy part is I had a lot of these man just being back memories I didn’t remember
I had this as a kid and really enjoyed it. The maze game was the one I always came back to, I don’t remember if I ever beat it. It’s funny cause the way I got this was I was out grocery shopping with my mom and she ran into one of her coworkers, and she had just bought it from toysrus. I think they were supposed to be for donation but she ended up giving it to us along with a spiderman one which was also awesome. Still have them laying around somewhere, probably don’t work anymore sadly. A few years later we got a Nick summer camp tv game which was pretty okay also. These were nice little games to mess around with as a kid in the 2000s
Great coverage, though it’s fun for all ages and not just kids. Thank you for making this his great review!
One of my favorite childhood SpongeBob plug n play is SpongeBob Squarepants Bikini Bottom 500 racing game
I didn’t even know the next level for Sandy’s game was Goo Lagoon lol
Got this for my birthday one year. Was fun for along time! My dad still may have it somewhere hahaha
hell yeah i had a spongebob crt, even had a dvd player built in. spent a lot of time playing xbox on there
My brother and I actually had that years ago when we were kids, We used to play with it all the time along with another plug in console we had
It was loads of fun
I got this for Christmas one year as a kid it took so long finish everything
This the spiderman one that's a weird spiderman joystick and the namco plug in plays are awesome
I remember getting one as a kid for Christmas.
The Patrick and the Maze game was always our favorite for family gatherings.
Over time I sold it in a flea market back in the late 2000s. Luckily I found one a year ago at a thrift shop
Plays like a decent dream like before 😂
Loved playing this when i was a kid
Damn I actually had this growing up me and my little sister would play, wild to see it again
this is the game i used to play with this, so this is my childhood! i even made midis from there soundtracks!
Super Chum Bucket is amazing.
I remember these plug and play wrre sold everywhere.
I had both the SpongeBob plug and play and the SpongeBob CRT TV with matching remote
I still have one of these and it still works!
I remember getting one for Christmas at my school 2007
I had this system when you could buy it new. Had a lot of fun with the games, particularly Patrick and the Maze (but I never finished it either, nor did I finish any of the others).
Man I had this as a kid. I don't remember playing it all too much but I do remember one specific instance of myself playing it... probably the day I got it. It just got tossed into random places as it slowly became more forgotten about, but seeing those prices it's going for makes me wish I still had it. I lost gold!
I used to play this thing so much, but child me never got far in any of the games. It was great to see it again so many years later.
I loved this so much as a kid
Believe it or not the early version is the one with the theme. I took mine apart and the date on it was September 2003 and it played the theme.
I owned the Spongebob and Ms. Pac-Man plug and play games back in the day, and I loved the hell out of both of them.
In some alternate timeline all Atari 2600 remotes are the SpongeBob one…
I've heard quite a few Arpeggios in Game Bout Color games too.
I HAD THE TV omg I loved to use that as a kid to watch everything on vhs
I played the hell out of this thing but don’t remember the games too well. That controller is so iconic though I’ll remember it forever.
My favorite plug’n’play was a Spider-Man Head and it was a pretty good side scroller last I remember
This plug n play was my childhood
"We are not responsible if God himself decides to smite your Spongebob Plug&Play joystick."
Man, I actually had one of these as a kid!
I remember playing this thing all the time as a kid!
I remember this and a few others i think i played dig dug and Ecco on one long ago
Ah I remember this one and used to love the Super Chum Bucket! Also, didn't know about the re-used sound effects.
AHHH i had this it was so good!! Oh my god patrick and the maze !!
I want to play this so badddd I used to beat the Patrick maze one on sight
I had one of these when I was younger. I spent hours playing the bubble game
best video of the month just dropped
When I was little I had several different Spongebob ones, along with a few Pac-Man ones and Spider-Man one. These were what I used to play before I got into consoles. Fun times :')
How cool one must feel, to be able to say “yeah, you can go and get smeckledorf’d, because i have a SpongeBob plug & play”
Oh nice I have this one. It is great
