I had the same thing happen to my sweet potato slips this last season and I mean they were terrible looking I just knew they were not going to survive...well I was wrong. They thrived - best sweet potatoes I've grown. There is hope. Shalom.
I got onions in way late last year. They were quite small but quite delicious. I am not a great gardener , but I try to learn more each season. I am improving on step at a time. Thank you for all the tips. Have a lovely day.
Love Hoss! Zone 9a Pensacola. We got the same onions last year and they were beautiful. This year we got ours late as well and they look just like yours. I had to peel off the slime. But, stuff happens and we will always buy from Hoss. We make it work!
Speaking of watering, we have one of those big plastic containers (the ones with a metal frame around it - don't know what it's called) but we have one mounted on a small trailer (that we call the "Water Wagon" 😂) that we can pull with a tractor. It has a small submersible pump from Harbor Freight in it that we hook to a hose to water our gardens with. I think it holds around 200 gal or so. It sure helps when your gardens are a ways from the well!
Thanks for the tip on the onions. You’re high tunnel and all that you are growing in there looks absolutely beautiful so healthy.. I keep you both in my prayers. 🙏🙏God bless you both.
We got onions frm Dixondales. They are super tiny 1/3 the size of yours. If you trim off the bad parts and set them in an inch of water. Keep it changed/fresh and under lights. They will start growing! You can do the same thing with store green onions after you cut the tops off and use them. I plant the grocery store green onions in my garden after using the tops and resprouting the bulbs in water.
I had the same experience from Hoss Tools but mine looked worse. Didn’t even bother planting. Quickly went to the local feed store and bought some and planted. Hope I’m not too late. Next year I’m buying from Dixondale Farms.
Grateful you made this video. I'm by Texarkana Arkansas. I got my onions from Hoss yesterday 12/2 and they look terrible. Praying I'm able to salvage some. I ordered 5 bundles. Blessings
Thanks Danny and Wanda. I always sort my onions by size and remove all the nasty stuff too. I also plant my smaller ones among my other crops. I plant them closer together than for growing huge bulb onions. It doesn't matter about the spacing since I'll be using them for green onions. Much Love❤
I think if i planted any ground crop that wasnt an ice cube, it'd turn into 1. We're zone 6b abt a mile or less away it goes to 7. We're in the southern part of Idaho & at 11 am its a whopping 36°f. I think it was about 21-28° at 6:30 this morning. I've got some potatoes in the ground, but it's covered by a put together hoop house that's roughly 20° warmer, maybe. I would like to put some onion's in the ground, just now doable. But i got a tomato plant (2) growing pretty good inside with 3 pear tomatoes already on it. It started growing outside in Octavia amongst the potatoes (not sure how it got there), but brought it in as we just got a frost then & it killed off some of the potato greenery that was protecting it. I'm processing some other tomatoes that grew outside & was doing good in the hoop house (livestock panel & plastic) until the temps got down to 21° I need a heat source to grow anything this late in the year. 45 would be a heat wave for us .. only if there wasn't wind blowing too. Great tip on the onion's.
The Lord knows his planting dates (later than we want may be his way of avoiding a kwirk in weather that wipes everyone else's out). Keep trusting him😊. God's blessing you.
I plant the tiny ones with my big ones. Most of them are about 4 inches across. I bought a sweet potato package from hoss. They were beautiful. Even though the potatoes at harvest time were beautiful my soil was extremely hard, breaking the potatoes as I dug them. I bottled them all because there was no saving them fresh. Last year I loosened the soil with pearlite. I will order from hoss this year
Our Hoss onions looked and smelled the same way. We spread them out to dry and planted 3 days after (the day before Thanksgiving) We've had frost every night since then :/
I ordered from Dixion Dale last year and I grew some big beautiful onions. This year I ordered from Hoss Tools and have not got them yet. Hope I hurry up and get mine.
Good morning Mr Danny and Ms Wanda. Just received our onions as well and this cold is just crazy. Afraid I was going to kill all the stars with the frost we've had the last few nights in the field. Thank you for sharing good information for us to try with our planting. Have a blessed day.
I ordered some from dixondale and some from Hoss (the vidoras)….the ones from dixondale were real small .. I put 2 of them in one hole since they were so small… the vidoras looked better and I’m planting most of the vidoras in high tunnel… but the vidoras are still laying over .. the dixondales are standing up .. we will see what happens… Usually all my Hoss plants and seeds have done good.. Last year I got all of mine from dixondale and they didn’t look good but I fertilized them once a week and got some pretty good sized onions
My prediction is that you'll get onions!!! I like to side dress them with triple 13. When I first plant them, I water them in with miracle grow. That gives them food until they can reach out to the side-dressed fertilizer.
Mine were half rotten and slimmy too. Inside the box was wet. Even the paperwork inside had fallen apart. I'll bring looking for somewhere else to order next year
It’s disheartening to order plants that come in looking so bad. I didn’t plant onions this time, but did plant a bed of garlic. They are doing great, even though the freeze we got. Thanks for taking us through the process of separating and planting. Shalom
Great tips! That is a great idea to go ahead and separate the better quality from the lesser. I haven't ever planted this time of year in Oklahoma, but maybe I should. Can you give some advice on how to store onions long term after the harvest without a walk in cooler?
So sorry very disappointing to receive slime onions. I have had that issue in the past. I now start my onions from seed indoors and then plant out. I have had the best success getting huge onions this way. Maybe next year you buy the seed and start your own sets under grow lights indoors like late July or early August. ❤
Always watching but never comment😊 I enjoy your content. I saw a video about how to get your celery stalks to stand up. “Secrets to growing celery” - Scott Head (Black Gumbo) channel. Wrap a piece of cardboard around each plant as tall as the celery stalks and tie off with string, this keeps all stalks standing tall until harvest time. Danny mentioned this on the live on Saturday. 🙂 Thanks for the onion tips.
The onions I got from Dixondale last year were in horrible condition like that. I called and they replaced them but they were still some pretty bad ones in the replacements. I'm not sure what's going on.
I'm a little confused, aren't you coming in to winter? They will survive the freezes? I'm in 7b, in your opinion, when should I be preparing to do this?
Last year I got a bundle of 50 and could not get planted when they came due to co tinted freezing weather. By the time I was able to plant they looked horrible. They grew onions size of baseball to softballs. They were not slimy just dried I t was not seed company faults they came when they were suppose to but we had such a late freezing spring.
Likely you know all this. .. Might have to scout out Primary Water sites & design an air-water dehumidifying system if you're gonna be a desert. You & Spain. Olive & coconut trees next to go w/ your pineapple, banana, cane & citrus. Thank God for high tunnels & Vego. Accept the crazy weather trends. Beat it where you can. Pray for wisdom & direction of new growing times. The Father always offers alternatives. -- xxoo. 💌🍒
Just opened my hoss onions and most of them are teeny. No slime, but a good bit of dirt and dried up leaves. Disappointing to say the least. I’m in Northeast Louisiana and the heat comes early here as well.
The high tunnel looks like it’s starting to get full. I hope you are planning to put up at least one more. The Lord has plans to prosper you, and when He lays something on me, I have learned the hard way to obey Him with alacrity and enthusiasm. HE hasn’t told me to stop, yet. I’m praying that you receive showers of blessings that will replenish your groundwater and fill your ponds.

I planted vidora last year! They made great onions. I’m in se Georgia.
I got mine last week. I was ready to plant mine when they got here. Onions are very forgiving.
I had the same experience from Hoss Tools but mine looked worse. Didn’t even bother planting. Quickly went to the local feed store and bought some and planted. Hope I’m not too late. Next year I’m buying from Dixondale Farms.

My onions were the same way. Some even had roots that had rotted off. Hopefully they pull through.
Thank you for sharing
Great tips! That is a great idea to go ahead and separate the better quality from the lesser. I haven't ever planted this time of year in Oklahoma, but maybe I should. Can you give some advice on how to store onions long term after the harvest without a walk in cooler?
We actually chop and freeze most of ours.
That celery is ready to eat unless just used for cooking. initially like 💧 water to get plumper.
Grrreat.
Working on gutters and down spouts, 17 degrees here.
That's cold
We're there's a will there's a way 🙇♀️

Danny, get a Big sombrero hat. Like in the Old days~!
I'm a little confused, aren't you coming in to winter? They will survive the freezes? I'm in 7b, in your opinion, when should I be preparing to do this?
Yes they will survive the freeze. It depends on what length of day onions you need.
Go to Dixon Dale site and look at the map and see which type you need.
Last year I got a bundle of 50 and could not get planted when they came due to co tinted freezing weather. By the time I was able to plant they looked horrible. They grew onions size of baseball to softballs. They were not slimy just dried

Good morning Danny and Wanda! Burrrr…. 33 degrees here in Central Alabama.
Morning!
Good morning!!!
Morning!
I have to plant onions I’ve never grown them before.
My onion growing ability needs tò greatly improve ! 😊
It's not really hard once you find the right variety.
Just opened my hoss onions and most of them are teeny. No slime, but a good bit of dirt and dried up leaves. Disappointing to say the least. I’m in Northeast Louisiana and the heat comes early here as well.

IKNOW YOU WILL HAVE SOME ONIONS
I will not order from Hoss ever again. Tell us Greg's contact info, cause like you said he was the only one who seemed to care at Hoss
Mine looked worse. Literally have a small section of MOLD on one bundle. NC zone 8. So disappointed on wasted money and time. Salvaging what I can
HOW TO STORE THAT MANY FROM SPOILING?
We chop and freeze them.
