The stars of Hulu's Normal People on the "raunchy trailer" and their favorite soundtracks

  • Unless you’ve been watching HBO’s Gentleman Jack or have been keeping up with the Irish theater scene, you might be unfamiliar with actors Daisy Edgar-Jones and Paul Mescal. But that’s about to change thanks to Hulu’s Normal People-an adaptation of best-selling author Sally Rooney’s second novel-which casts the pair as Marianne and Connell, two students whose charged romance plays out against the backdrop of Ireland’s economic downturn in the 2000s. With an easy charm and a lived-in on-screen chemistry, Edger-Jones and Mescal feel destined to be the object of the internet’s affection, swooned over and gif’d for many months to come. As it turns out, the actors are just as endearing in person, which we learned when we sat down with them this past January at the TCA’s winter press tour. The pair discussed their whirlwind audition process, the question of what makes this a “millennial” love story, and shared their thoughts on Twitter dubbing BBC’s teaser the “horny trailer.” And, because Normal People has a few great needle drops of its own, we had Edger-Jones and Mescal discuss some of their favorite soundtracks, from Drive to Big Little Lies.

Chloe Lavin very very true. So I’m guessing there will be no second season? Not that I want a second season because the fact that the first season is absolute perfection and could not be topped. This series doesn’t really need a second season. Though I’d love one❤️

I’m 40 and my husband is 55 and we both absolutely adore the series and could 100% relate to it, thinking back to when we were their age. Their love story is so real because it isn’t perfect but what I love about Connell and Marianne is that their love for each other is so pure, so passionate and so selfless. All they really want is for each other to be happy. The actors played their characters beautifully and the show is amazing. It brought up all these old feelings from my past and relationships I had in my teens and twenties.
SPOILER ALERT IF YOU HAVEN’T WATCHED THE SHOW OR READ BOOK.....
Some people thought the ending was sad and yes it was definitely bittersweet but it was also beautiful because it solidified just how much Marianne loves Connell that she wanted him to go and have this amazing experience in New York at the risk of everything changing between them again. That is what real love is, it’s is pure and selfless ❤️❤️

Just for point of reference, 59-year-old straight American male here. Watched this by myself because my wife isn't keen on love stories for some reason. Didn't 'binge' because I preferred to spread out the enjoyment of looking forward to what happens next over a longer period. Loved the show and want to compliment all involved, particular these two fine performers. Can't imagine how difficult it was to perform some of those scenes, and I'm not just referring to the intimate ones. No idea if there is more to the story, but I kind of like it being left as it was. We can choose how we think it continues.

But, to be fair to the character, that communication deficiency was in large part a byproduct of his deep-seated anxiety. Only a millennial or later would say that "it could be describing the ways they communicate" because they never lived in a world where essentially free or very cheap
instant communication with sound and visuals or instant text messaging wasn't continuously available so that as long as someone hasn't changed their cell
phone number you can always be in touch with them the instant you wish to be, so that these star crossed lovers so easily kept in contact from high school on despite being tongue tied and extremely socially maladapted. Thus is a love story that could only happen after the information revolution began. Their love is timeless but their story is entirely dependent on the connections through social media that support their situation.
50 years ago you easily lost track of friends when they went to college. Now you can find almost anyone living almost anywhere within an hour of deciding you want to. Sometimes even if they've changed their names.
