@Joshua Suh I mean, your right but this came out after mario kart 8 and who knows what Nintendo's going to do for mario kart 9? Nintendo has been adding cosmetic items to their more recent games (Mario Odyssey, BoTW, Splatoon) what's not to say that they'll do the same thing with Mario Kart 9. They might not be microtransactions, but the idea is still there and they are technically doing it for a mario kart game on mobile. The game has been downloaded a lot from what I heard and people still play Pokemon GO. So you never know. Just be sure to not support it if you feel obligated.
@Joshua Suh Fair point. Though be wary about what they do next. We live in a gaming era where developers are creating more incentives for gamers to keep playing their games for longer periods of time and to unlock more stuff (usually cosmetics).
CTR:NF gets new content for free for several months while TSR gets nothing.
CTR:NF is above and beyond the better game, though... TSR is total downgrade in every sense of the word from ASRT while CTR:NF takes one of the best racers on PS1 and upgrades it in almost every way (the only serious flaw being the unnecessary but thankfully completely optional microtransactions, hence why I said *almost* every way)...

I would like to point out that in _spite_ of Activision's best efforts, Beenox has done their absolute best to make the microtransactions completely optional. Lowering prices and adding the 2x Weekend Bonus to offline modes ensures that the grind is even more fair now than when the microtransactions were first added.
Beenox deserves our praise and support, despite their evil publisher.

I havent unlocked half of the stuff and i am "nearly" done with dev times, probably takes weeks before i am done with slide coliseum and out of time, everytime i improve my old pb by 0.1 seconds, a ghost of that new pb automatically appears, just to confuse you. That is what i think of as a real problem with the game, but even more annoying is the fact there are 3 different boost meters which can be changed with a press of a button, but i'd like to be able to lock on to 1 single meter and also i would like to lock on to a singe camera angle, so i dont have to press L2 at the start of each race.
You might be glad to hear that since the regular updates have ceased, the last major one added new skins for the special unlockable Champion Kart that can only be unlocked by beating the even *faster* times on time trials, and a new set of wheels for the karts that can only be unlocked by beating the developer time trials, so there's plenty of busting ass to be had here now for awesome unlockables.

joseaca Yeah. The DLC's just an attempt to get people to forgive/excuse the bullshit, that allows them to rake in billions yearly off people who have addictions, kids who haven't developed the mental fortitude or understanding to resist the manipulative practices, or just from sheer bullying.
Not to mention how shady they handled it, releasing it after the reviews were out, so they could get people who don't want to support this crap would buy the game without knowing.

I’m glad you went into detail about the micro transactions I was afraid you’d glance over the potential issue like you did with overwatch. I loved the game but after beating adventure mode I didn’t get nearly the amount of coins I wanted.
And I’m nowhere near good enough to have a fun time online meaning if I want to get more characters and karts I’d have to pay up. I haven’t touched the game since August because of that

Playing online with friends is honestly much more fun than playing against random people, and makes it feel like less of a grind.

3:56 This was something they just added in the most recent update. It was a nice change after complaints that Speed types being way overpowered and only on certain characters, now any character with the speed engine will have a good chance in winning.

@Take My Breath Away!!! It's because Speed class characters are supposed to have the highest top speed, but poor turning to balance it. However, there's an incredibly easy was to circumvent that, which makes them objectively better than every other class because, if played correctly, they have zero weaknesses.

But, this is Activision we're talking about, and there are two things they simply can't help themselves in regards to doing - tanking their public image and shoving microtransactions into games that don't need microtransactions.

This is more of a publisher issue than a game developer issue. It’s the publishers who force their game devs to do this kind of thing, in this case the publisher being Activision.
I still like this game itself, and I loved being able to finally get Into CTR and I love how Beenox generally has at least tried to constantly upgrade the game to fix common problems people have

Also, this is just me but, to be honest, I'd rather not have any of the extra content if it meant god-awful microtransactions were included. It's really kind of maddening how they handle the pit stop and microtransactions. And like you said, even the way they set up the shop is so transparently greedy. They know that if they make all characters and cosmetics available in the pit stop so that you could just buy the few things you want right away, they'd lose their chance to ring you dry for everything you're worth. Honestly, I think there are some things they add just so that they can pad out the number of items that the pit stop has to rotate through.
You can look at the exhausts instead of the boost meter. The smoke turns black when it's the right time.
Im really glad you talked about the Microtransactions John, and gave the game fair criticism over it, since i know you dont ALWAYS talk about that kinda stuff its great that its brought up, personally as someone who has pretty bad habits and impulses it does upset me greatly that Activision decided to go with this move.

I did pay full price upfront for Nitro Fueled, and the microtransactions just feels like a slap in the face after they were added in.
It's one of the reasons why I don't really play the game much anymore because unless you buy PS Plus to go online, you didn't really get coins fast enough to get the items or characters you wanted due to the constantly revolving store. It gets worse when you add timed characters and items to the mix. You pretty much need to put money into it or play it for hours every day just to get everything, and if you slow up, you will miss your only chance to get that GP exclusive character

The game's selling point is its characters.
While Mario Kart 8 dumps in palette swaps and costumes as separate characters and Team Sonic Racing doesn't get its cast, Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled includes just about everyone.
CTR Nitro Fueled is a perfect example of how cosmetic only microtransactions STILL hurt games.
More like how they were executed.

Time trials mode is one of my favorite parts of CTR. I highly recommend trying them out if you want to improve at the game.

Was wondering when you would review this one. I’ve been enjoying it quite alot, though I don’t have much time to play it these days. I mostly race online till the wumpa multiplier goes away and then do something else, but that’s enough for me.
5:06 Also this was always in CTR. What was in Nitro Kart though was the fact that the boost meter would pop up next to your character whenever you drift, which fixed the whole not being able to look at the road and the bar at the same time. They honestly should have added that in the remake.

Actually, the boost mechanics in Nitro Kart worked because the boost gauge appeared next to your racer whenever you started a drift so you didn’t have to look at the bottom right corner.

2 things that might help you.
You can use the tires to see how high your boost gauge is, you don't need the boost gauge itself.
you can hand brake, it kills your speed and lets you rotate for a distance you'll like

Clockwork Wumpa is awesome, just use air braking and it's great. I also recommend the new engine, the drift engine.
The games as a service model has killed any interest i have in CTR. Especially the feeling of having to do a new event every month with no break inbetween or way to get the items from previous grand prix you missed. Its such a chore and the grind only makes it worse.
Tip with drifting, look at the wheels. They glow more the longer you drift. It's another way to see when you have to boost.
Still would prefer if the meter was near the character like Nitro Kart, but at least there's a work around
Not gonna lie the grind and the micro transactions killed the game for me. I just lost all interest in playing it, I don't even want to get Spyro or any of the other new characters added it just made the game drag hard.

What grind? I didnt go out of my way to do any challenges for nitro and I finished the GP like 2-3 weeks before it ends.
Microtransaactions - Mario Kart Tour in a nutshell
I originally joined a Discord server of this game to get help for friend challenges. I got that and then some thanks to the coin grinding board and the glitches shared by the community. I highly recommend it to anyone feeling the weight of the grind, to make it just a little lighter. Don't give Activi$ion the pleasure of victory. Make them think twice before pulling this stunt again!

Aw yeah! Time for a game I was looking forward to for a long time after it was announced. Since then, I’ve been l loving the game. My only minor complaint is the fact that every new Grand Prix comes out every month. I hope activision and beenox know that most of us have either work or school, so a little break between each Grand Prix would be nice. Aside from that, I love this game as much as the original. @joseaca Free updates don't really cater much to me when they go back on their word for extra money. I'm an avid fan of Overwatch-- 1500+ hours, and I'm fine with loot boxes because they were part of the gane from the start. I wouldn't care if WCs for purchase were added later, but to say there wouldn't be any and then add them still is just silly.

I don't know if it was just me or my version of the game (I owned the switch version), but I found online matches significantly harder to find once the microtransactions dropped so let that be a warning to anyone purchasing this game.
With the weekend and daily bonus active, you get about 5000-7000 coins in the time it takes your daily bonus to run out. This is assuming you don't usually get 1st. This usually takes about 2 hours of casual play time.

Going forward: they should add Koala Kong since he’s thyroid only original boss that’s not yet a racer. And then Add a no item mode to online, remove the microtransactions, and give 10,000 coins to everyone as an apology for everything from the greed to the bugginess to the save file corruption

Activision. I'm not surprised, honestly. But I get my coins by good old-fashioned grinding. It's been easier recently, thanks to the recent update adding the x2 Wumpa Coin Weekend for offline players THANK YOU BEENOX
The only time I've ever bought a Wumpa Coin MTX was when I had some spare PSN bucks left over after spurging for River City Girls.

It's good to see an up-to-date review so that a major positive talking point isn't obsoleted in a case like this where they add the microtransactions.
5:00 YES! Finally someone who feels the same. As someone who put far too much time into CTR, the new controls like with the N. Sane Trilogy threw me off a bit. Sewer Speedway's shortcut is one I could do almost 100% of the time on the PS1 version but could not (and still cannot) consistently do it in the remake.
I did go onto Platinum the game and once I got used to the new controls, beating the AI on Hard mode was a breeze, including the Oxide Time Trials outside of a handful of levels. I'm just glad that a RUclipsr has actually talked about this, great review as always Juan!
Only consistent thing for wumpa coins is that for 30 mins of in game racing time on a weekend they'll be a x10 coin bonus (with electron Avenue giving the max 800 per race if your 1st) and only playing on those times gives about 24000 coins from testing it.
Otherwise it's a x5 on normal days until the 30 mins are up
During launch, I have been enjoying Crash Team Racing Nitro; but now? I honestly felt the same way I did with Crash 3 Remake the more I've played it. It's honestly one of those games, where I just have better memories back then to now.
I find my jumping mostly works, like, 95% of the time, so I'm OK. Maybe it's my fault, maybe it's the game. Can't tell. But the wonky hit boxes, which is something i have trouble with 1% of the time, certainly isn't my fault.
CTR actually prompted me to set up password protection on my PS4 spending just so my nephew doesn't accidentally by Coins with my money.
Love Beenox. Hate Activision.
I wonder why there's been a sudden surge in mascot racers? We went from none to 3 in only a few months it seems.
Man, this game really annoys me. I was very interested in buying it as it looked really good and the reputation that CTR had was great, but then Activision added these microtransactions in the scummiest way I have seen so far and I just cannot support a company that does that regardless of how good the product is.
I think my biggest complaint with this game is the drip feed of coins from playing the game, yes, but especially if you're playing single player. This game added online and they REALLY want you to use it if you're gonna get...pretty much anything.
Crash N'Sane Trilogy is part of a humbe bundle this month you can get both crash bandicoot and spyro for just 12 dollars.
I never had a problem with the jump physics or the jump not registering for me strangely.
Little tip: Tap the brake button a few times while in midair either from jumping or going off a ramp or boost pad so you can get past sharp turns, avoid obstacles, and keep your boost up. That way you have more control of yourself when turning and such. Good tip from good ol' Daddy Caddy on his CTR Nitro Fueled review lol
Activision Blizzard are scum. This was a remaster, and they ruined it.
There is actually a very decent trick to gain a large amount of coins without giving Activision a cent. What you do is take a controller with turbo functionality, go to Lab Basement on Crystal Challenge with the difficulty set to hard, make sure the horn and item buttons(X and A on Switch for example) are set to auto fire. Then leave it be for few good hours and you will be raking in the coins. During weekends you can get over 18,000 coins easily now with this method since the weekend bonus applies to offline modes now

You already bought a game that was well worth the money. But everything that they are releasing after with updates is COMPLETELY FREE! that’s something that they DONT have to do. Characters, karts, tracks etc.. just out the time and you’ll get it all at no extra cost! Stop complaining! They’re still working to make the game better for you! They gotta get paid somehow! Each month the developers update the game adding One new race track + 3 or more new characters + 3 new karts + new game modes, skins, color palets for karts and wheels all for free
I got the new 3 characters from the spooky Grand Prix without spending a single dollar in 3 hours of playing the game

And as i said they add this stuff for free so microtransactions are acceptable Just like in fortnite

It’s not only a faithful remake of CTR and practically NK but it also adds new characters, tracks, karts, and other content on a monthly basis and FOR FREE.
Just ignore how much love and care has clearly been put into this game by Beenox. It’s a love letter for fans of the franchise with how they include content from and also post Naughty Dog. But i guess it’s still just a “fair” amount. Lmao
And 11:15 ... how would you even see other players ONLINE without paying to have an ONLINE subscription, which btw COSTS MONEY. If someone has access to the online mode, then they’ll easily be able to get the content in the pit stop by playing the game and using the daily and weekend coin bonuses that multiply your coin earnings. Negating the need to purchase mtx, which, the option to buy them in game is placed in a non obtrusive and subtle way.
If you’re easily tempted into buying stuff in games, that’s on you. And learn to discipline your kids ffs.
But go ahead, focus on a dumb detail that doesn’t affect the game in any way. Yes, it’s scummy of Activision to have added mtx to the game a while after the game was out. So what? The game is still incredible
But go ahead and focus in the negatives. Good job adding nothing new to the conversation of this game. “Microtransactions = bad! Applaud me!!!”
