It's awesome to hear young people getting excited about gardening! When I was a little boy my grandparents and parents let me hang out in their gardens and help them. I'm 52 now and still gardening. 🙂
It is so good seeing young people interested in gardening. After all we need food and if you can become self sufficient that that is wonderful. We have canned for over 50 years. Hope you keep learning and HAPPY GARDENING, GOD BLESS.

I saw this post last night, and I’ve been waiting all day to finally sit and watch it. Persimmons are quickly becoming one of my favorite fruits, and I cannot wait until my two trees get as large and full as yours. There are a lot of astringent Asian varieties as well. My ‘Giombo’ is an Asian cultivar and has some of the largest fruits in circulation, but it is one of the few persimmons that blooms early and can be a frost risk, unfortunately.
James, your enthusiasm and passion for gardening are infectious. A lot of things about RUclips make me a bit jaded and pessimistic about the platform, but every now and then a channel like yours comes along and reminds me of the potential of RUclips and how it gives a platform to born educators and entertainers to do what they love best for a wide audience. Keep up the great work.
Persimmon trees are the prettiest in the winter. They look like they have christmas ornaments on them. I planted Nikita's gift a couple years ago after watching James enjoying it. Hopefully next year it will fruit!
Absolutely love persimmons. We have both the soft and hard persimmons growing here in South Korea. What I love to do with the soft ones is put them in the freezer and make persimmon sorbet in the summer. Mind blowing delicious! Also love seeing Tuck in every video ❤️❤️
The Persimmon (Diospyros virginiana) tree is a native plant here in southern Ohio, and they are very large trees - up to 50' tall. The fruit is delicious after a couple fall frosts, and they make some wonderful Persimmon Jam. The hard part is harvesting enough of them before the Raccoons get them.
Good to know. I'm out of S. OH as well and just moved into my homestead last week. I have trees growing in 5 gallon buckets at my old place to start an orchard. I'm new at this and was wondering if it's too late to plant them now. My move in date was delayed 9 times because of supply chain issues during the build hence, the trees aren't planted. Nice harvest with some really good information on branch angle and pruning. I've found persimmon wood to be brittle and the braches break easily rather than bending, so it's important to thin a heavy crop or support the branches. Regarding pests, my biggest issue is mammals. I have to harvest my Fuyu and Haichiya before they're ripe or the raccoons will do a lot of damage to the branches. Thank you for such a great video! I had my first persimmon the other day and I'm obsessed with them now! Gardening in the desert is tough but I'm learning more every season(luckily we have 3 a year, lol).
I got some native persimmons that I need to plant out in the spring for the deer. Probably 25-30 of them. I’m putting in a food forest for the deer so they will stay out of mine lol. I have 1 fuyu persimmon tree in my food forest that I planted about 2-3 weeks ago.
Thank you for talking about thinning your tree! A lot of RUclipsrs show trees that have to be supported on every branch, so I'm glad to know how to avoid that. Thank you!

@@jamesprigioni Any suggestions about how to increase the chances to have success with sowing persimmons seeds. I heard about planting the seeds directly on soil in small containers. Some people say, it's better to put those seeds in containers in humid environment like a fridge for about three months. In your experience what is the best to success ? I live in southern California. Can you please give me some suggestions about it ? Thanks in advance for your help
A Meader persimmon and a Forest Prince serviceberry were the very first plantings of my food forest because I'm hoping they can mostly take care of themselves while I figure out everything else. That was last fall. Now I've just purchased one of your raised beds to practice some of the herbaceous layer starting next spring. 😀
It is so productive that it's incredibel., I have 2 of them and every year I harvast at least 150-200kg! They gave my frutis for about 3-5 month straight!

GREAT video, we have 5 persimmon trees on our property,, but I love how informative you are in this video, we have had so many friends who want to grow their own persimmon trees.
Agree! We have an astringent Fuju Persimmon tree here in Maryland, Zone 5. It’s about 10 years in the ground now (2022) and it might have been 2-3 year old tree when purchased. The last few years we have picked & enjoyed luscious, tasty fresh persimmon fruit in mid-November. We picked, skinned & froze our bounty & made persimmon pie this year for Thanksgiving. It’s now 27 Nov & there are about 75 beauties just about ready to pick. A few days of sub-freezing wxr & frosts made the big change. Bingo too on the leaves once they turn. Orange & yellow hues. Persimmon is a win, win, win. Easy to grow, little maintenance or water, scrumptious fruit. The taste - a combo of fresh mango & papaya!
I really appreciate how much information you cover in one video. Thank you! I like persimmons, and have thought about trying to grow them, but didn’t know enough to be confident. Now I do! Thank you! Thank you!
Great info as always - and timely. I got interested in persimmons because I just found out our state university's annual plant sale has them. Our dogs Sabbath and Slayer say, "Hi Tuck!" 😁
I love persimmons especially the Asian ones, they’re the best ever!!!!!! I don’t usually by the American persimmons, I’m Asian and I’m used to eating only that kind and it’s awesome as well! Omg, I’m so jealous I would love some persimmons right now! I bought 30 lbs of persimmons once, and it only lasted me three maybe four days!! We can eat fruit like no other. Thanks for sharing, appreciate very much your amazing. Blessings
Tree ripe persimmons taste heavenly. It's difficult for people who never tried to imagine. It is superior to mango, apple, pear, pineapple, orange, etc. It is super sweet, creamy, and has a fascinating persimmon fragrance. Unfortunately, they don't ship unless completely frozen. Unripe ones have bad taste and need up to 2 weeks to become sweet.
I've got like 20 of these that sprouted in my yard this year. I've got to dig them up and spread them out but its nice they showed up on their own. (probably with help from birdies.)
You have the nicest soil Ive ever seen.. I'd like to know what those white chunks are in your soil? Pummice? Course perlite? I've been having garden destroying Northern Corn Rootworm Beetles(mostly pure green non striped) infest my garden for the last 3 years and it's making me want to give up on gardening. They eat every flower that isnt marigold but also sit on those plants as well. They seem to LOVE petunias, dahlias, and zucchini flowers..... I haven't had a good harvest of tomatoes or peppers since they came. I've tried growing zucchini 3 years in a row and haven't gotten a single one. Two different varieties but I think its because of those stupid wisconsin bugs that came down into illinois(probably because the nearby monoculture corn farmers changed their seed type). I read that they like plants with lots of nitrogen more than others so I thought getting rid of my purple clover and summer alfalfa two years ago would help(I was growing those for my compost). It did not help. These bugs have made me hate gardening but I don't want to give up. There has to be some way to get them away from my garden... I also do not want to spray chemicals........ I've tried vinegar solutions and yeast solutions that don't do crap. I really don't want to use sticky traps either because last time I tried that I killed a lot of grasshoppers on accident. I never see grasshoppers destroying my plants so I don't like killing them. The variety of Northern Corn Rootworm Beetle I seem to have the most of is the non striped pure green colored one but sometimes I get the pure tan colored ones too.. Any ideas on how to make them go away??
I'm giving those a whirl here in Massachusetts now that I watched this. Astringents also clear your skin, so I bet when they aren't ripe you can use them topically for rashes and bug bites. cool! Thanks man! you ROCK! Zone 6B here in Westport, MA
@@maumau252 trying the seeds first. Its cold man! under lights, then plant them in Spring. Going to try lemon and orange trees in a greenhouse as well. all from seed at this point.
I planted my Nakita's Gift 2 years ago. It has grown about 2 feet in 2 years. Now it's about 4 feet tall. I'm patient but I cannot wait to see fruit on it some day 😋
I have watched this video like 4 times, I planted my first Ichi-Ki-Kei-Jiro Asian Persimmon this year in zone 6a and it has 1 fruit, very excited for it, hope it makes it.
Do you check the seed to see what the winter forecast will be? I saw that's a thing with persimmon trees. I was wondering what the inside of the seed looked like. Lots of people are coming up with "spoons" on theirs, but they're not in this region. It's amazing how much fruit is on that tree.
I think it's a southern thing. Spoon vs fork vs knife. Like warmer winter, or cuts like a knife. I think Patara at Appalachia's Homestead did a video last fall about this...
I am planning to get one planted this year. It’s my first year to taste fuyu Simmons and loved it. Not fan of the soft kind😏 but going to plant the hard as an apple kind. Not sure what variety yet and I’m in zone 9b
We have 8 producing persimmon trees; 6 in back of house for squirrels and 2 in front for my wife and me. My concern is where are the squirrels planting all those seeds?! This year we froze 5 1-gallon bags for us to enjoy into next year. We just let thaw a few minutes and enjoy. Is there an easy way to remove seeds if we want to use pulp in a recipe? With this year’s bumper crop there was a lot of twig- breakage. We may be looking for an off year in ‘23. Nice video.
Greetings from your friend watching from Hong Kong. Hello, my friend James, this is very informative video how to have a fruit garden. Thank you so much for giving us such an informative idea on how to grow fruit-bearing trees. I loved eating persimmons and here in Hong Kong, there are various types of persimmons in the market but I don't know which one they are the good one. Thank you for giving us more information about this fruit. I loved and learned more about it. Wishing you a wonderful day ahead. Best regards from Hong Kong!😊👍 9:46

I tried a persimmons for the first time a few years ago. I thought they looked like a tomato, so that was what I expected it to taste like. It was the most pleasant surprise ever. Thanks for the video, it was good as they always are.
My hybrid is doing great in Virginia 7B. Great curb appeal, especially in the fall. Low to no maintenance. Fruit tastes great. Although wildlife might like the fruit, they don't damage the tree at all. Persimmon, jujube, fig, and paw paw all do great here, and you can't buy the trees or fruit locally. That's crazy. Apples, pears, stone fruit, all are big headaches to grow without chemicals, so I'd rather buy them at the store and grow the unique stuff I can't buy.
@@afrocraft1 They don't eat enough for me to notice. Maybe when they are ripe, but I never have many losses. And trust me, the deer are in the yard. I can't grow a Mulberry tree because they get devoured. I have a Nikita's Gift because it was the only hybrid I knew of. 7B is marginal for the pure Asian varieties. I had two die from winter kill here.
I was living in Virginia until recently - worked part time at Blue Ridge FarmersCoop in Albemarle county. We sold American Persimmons as well as Japanese and Korean varieties, also Paw Paws,Figs ( Brown Turkey, Celeste and Chicago Hardy) and Jujube plants. It might be worth a trip there in April if you are still looking for those. Don’t know how far it is for you. It was a small nursery but we sold really interesting plants.
Hope you and tuck have a follow-up. So many fruit. Do you leave the fallen fruit on the ground to fertilize your tree? Do you take the branch clippings and chop them around the tree to decompose with the fall leaves?
Found a persimmon on the ground at our new property…just can’t find the tree it came off of. I will be watching closely to see what all I can find out there!

Thank you!
Thank you so much for the video and the messages delivered in it. Every season has its gifts. have a great rest of the year, you're a blessing to the world
"Every season has its gifts"...nice!
You're one of SMARTEST WESTERN GARDENER I have known. You know what every garden I have come across only know pears and apples ..but you know what you're the only western gardener that I have come across on here that knows and owns a persimmon tree of your own. I mean you're very knowledgeable and god bless for the flavour you got Ur mouth into haha!
The very most fruit tree update from your garden that I have been waiting 😌
Let's Gooo!! Me and Tuck hope we didn't disappoint, it's been years in the making 🐕😁❤️
@@jamesprigioni😊
@@jamesprigioni Any suggestions about how to increase the chances to have success with sowing persimmons seeds. I heard about planting the seeds directly on soil in small containers. Some people say, it's better to put those seeds in containers in humid environment like a fridge for about three months. In your experience what is the best to success ? I live in southern California. Can you please give me some suggestions about it ? Thanks in advance for your help
Didn’t like persimmon when I was younger, but am obsessed now every winter I am on the lookout
Man, been following you for years now. I may get busy (work and stuff) but I always find myself watching your videos whenever I have time. You don't age at all! More videos to come!
Thanks for making so much great content! Hoping to be able to grow like you one day!
I always wanted to get some to put in my garden. Thanks for the info.
James!! You made my heart so happy! I live in NJ and I thought I couldn’t grow a nice persimmon tree. I can’t wait to get one now!
You literally are so impressive. I have a hard time keeping up with all my plants in my garden and you have like 10x that! Next year I’m gonna strive to have the best garden I have because of how nice yours is.
GREAT video, we have 5 persimmon trees on our property,, but I love how informative you are in this video, we have had so many friends who want to grow their own persimmon trees.
I am curious what you do with all the fruit you get from five trees. What do you do with the leftover fruit?
@@yuliayulia2509 I make the pulp and share with friends, the rest are a feast for the birds. The blue jays seem to enjoy them.
Agreed! The flavor is very difficult to describe unless you try them!
Planted 6 two year old persimmon trees two years ago..one of the fruits on the orchard I’m most excited about
I went to Broken Arrow Nursery in CT and ate some of their persimmons that were on the lawn and am ready to plant one! Nom nom!
I'm giving those a whirl here in Massachusetts now that I watched this. Astringents also clear your skin, so I bet when they aren't ripe you can use them topically for rashes and bug bites. cool! Thanks man! you ROCK! Zone 6B here in Westport, MA
Are you starting from seeds or young trees? I live in MA also and want to give it a go at it.
@@maumau252 trying the seeds first. Its cold man! under lights, then plant them in Spring. Going to try lemon and orange trees in a greenhouse as well. all from seed at this point.
In India we are growing fuyu n Hachiya(astringent)...waiting for fruits eagerly... Your videos are boosting the enthusiasm!
I planted my Nakita's Gift 2 years ago. It has grown about 2 feet in 2 years. Now it's about 4 feet tall. I'm patient but I cannot wait to see fruit on it some day 😋
I've got 4 american persimmons in the ground! I haven't gotten any fruit out of them yet, but I'm hopeful for this year.
I have watched this video like 4 times, I planted my first Ichi-Ki-Kei-Jiro Asian Persimmon this year in zone 6a and it has 1 fruit, very excited for it, hope it makes it.
I am coming for the Persimmons, absolutely beautiful. Merry Christmas to you and your family 🙏❤️
Nice video.
I just ordered 6 fruit trees, one was a persimmon. Haven’t had tree ripe persimmons in a couple decades, so good spread on toast like jam.
Thank you for posting this clip.So beautiful
Been thinking about getting a persimmon tree for a while. I've made jam with them and appreciate the insight and knowledge.
What’s the best way to get a Nikita’s Gift tree in California?
James, where can we purchase persimmon trees in Zone 7? also blackberry and raspberry bushes?
Beautiful! Fruits of the earth, Thank you, James!
Great Video James! Never fail to make an amazing video!!🤩👏🏽
A hoodie with a picture of Tuck and the words 'Gaurdian of the Garden' would be se cute!
Well that’s a good suggestion, because that exact thing will be coming out by next Saturday the latest.
Do you have the lottery numbers also by any chance Olivia? Haha 😂
@@jamesprigioni awww can't wait to see it! 😁 Tuck reminds me of my dad's Yorkshire terrier Teddy, they love being in the garden together too ❤ haha not sure about the lotto numbers but I will give it a try and send you some £ if I win 😊
I tried a persimmons for the first time a few years ago. I thought they looked like a tomato, so that was what I expected it to taste like. It was the most pleasant surprise ever. Thanks for the video, it was good as they always are.
Persimmons are a type of ebony so it’s not surprising that they don’t taste like tomatoes. They do look like tomatoes though.
Thank you. It was really useful. I was thinking of growing persimmon trees. I live in rural Hungary.
Quince trees also have late harvests and I just cut them in half and bake them.
Hi there, if you don't mind me asking: Don't the deer come for your persimmons? And which hybrid did you plant and why?
@@afrocraft1 They don't eat enough for me to notice. Maybe when they are ripe, but I never have many losses. And trust me, the deer are in the yard. I can't grow a Mulberry tree because they get devoured. I have a Nikita's Gift because it was the only hybrid I knew of. 7B is marginal for the pure Asian varieties. I had two die from winter kill here.
@@jcweld Ah, Nikita's Gift, an astringent type, makes sense to keep the deer away while they ripen. Thanks!
So happy to see Persimmons tree . Now is the season . Each grocery store is carrying Persimmons fruit 😋
Persimmon trees are ones of my favourite
Me too, soo dang yummy!
Information about how to grow persimmon tree is very help full and interesting.
I just bought 4 American persimmon trees, and three paw paw trees today! Whoop whoop!
I have never tried persimmons , I guess they are good from the way you talk about them. Great video James and Tuck . Thanks .
Oh my goodness. They look so delicious. Can you make jam with them. I'm jersey too. Might put one in. Hugs for Tuck. Handsome boy.
Found a persimmon on the ground at our new property…just can’t find the tree it came off of. I will be watching closely to see what all I can find out there!
i lived on my 10 acre trac of land over 10 years & one day saw a perrsimmon tree....i was shocked....there was a big cedar close to it that i cut out the next day....i went out today & bought a new persimmon tree & 2 Keiffer pear trees.......
Lovely tree. ❤
Just purchased 2 of this tree. appreciate the information.
Hey, noticed you haven't posted in a while, hope everything is going well with you! Love all your gardening videos, my plan is to have a homestead in the future and I use your content to think about what fruits and vegetables I'd like to plant in it
Really hoping for persimmons next year from my two trees, thanks for the care video!!
I just planted my Fuyu persimmon tree. Can't wait for it to produce.

Wow, My best friend, I liked the video very much, thanks you for sharing, stay safe, stay blessed
We don’t have persimmons where I live. Sure would like to try one. I don’t have anymore room for anymore trees on my lot. Maybe I’ll get one for my neighbor.
