Fun historic fact : Louis Armstrong as a child was sheltered for few years by Jewish immigrants from Russia who worked as tinker collectors , allegedly his first trumpet was given to him by the father of that family ...so yeah in a sense Pops was raised by Russians (source : Scott Deveaux jazz history book, 7th edition )

This is an old Russian folk song that the Red Army Choir later on remade. This is why a musician should listen to a lot of different art not to only one genre.
One thing that John Coltrane, Louis Armstrong and Jimi Hendrix had in common is they listen to an extremely wide variety of genres. In fact Jimi Hendrix didn't even like the Beach boys but he still listened to their music.

I'm wondering too. It sounds rather like Bigard at times, but too dynamic at other times. itcould well be Trummy Young on the trombone. Young stayed with Louis longer than Bigard did. However, there's a tenor saxophone in there somewhere and it even had a few bars solo. Louis had Barrett Deems on drums, Billy Kyle on piano, and Arvell Shaw on bass.. Those players were on the Louis Armstrong Plays W C Handy album. recorded in 1954. However, I just don't know when this was recorded, and there was definitely no sax onthat WC Handy album, and Louis had no sax with his band when I saw him in the early 60's just after Hello bloody Dolly came out and was a hit at least in the UK. It seemed like he sang it 10 times. That ruined the song for me ever after, and I used to like it until then.
Anyway, I have doubts that it was that identical band to W C Handy album one. I must shamefacedly say I canna mind any of Louis' sidemen at the concert I was at. Ed Hall played with Armstrong for a couple of years after Bigard left but was probably also gone well before I saw Louis.. That's all I know of Louis' band members, and his other bands varied a bit in personnel.

@@gynack Hallo Trevor. Thank you for talking with me. Yes, I feel you have the sidemen down pat..I think Bigard was with Louis when I saw them. I remember clear as a bell when Trummy leaned over my father to speak with my sister and myself asking us ""are you two girls enjoying the show"" or something very close to this....my goodness, how I adored Trummy..still do. I must get my program and have a good look at it again. I thank my parents..Dad played sax and claro professionally..mum sang professionally prior to my birth. My sister and I were raised with such wonderful music..Will be in touch. Regards..Marilyn..

The melody of this song is based on a piece by German composer Florian Hermann from 1884 (Hommage Valse, Op. 21). The lyrics were derived from a poem by Ukrainian writer Yevhen Hrebinka written in 1843. Originally a waltz, this song became a Russian folk song and is now widely known as a jazz standard. It's amazing to hear a song with such a diverse range of influences played by one of the greatest jazz musicians of all time.

He came to Caracas at the wong time, and CRIED when NO ONE went to his show, at the bullfith ring (Nuevo Circo). It was around 1957 & he was denied staying at the Hotel Tamanaco; so he stayed at the Hotel Ávila. He was, indeed, an incredible musician & a happy person. I have a picture of him & local bandleader Aldemaro Romero.

The thing that I love the most about Louis was his love for music and his love for Laxatives. He would always invite a bunch of friends over and they would be Struttin' with their Barbecue, literally and figuratively. Afterwards, after the great feast, he would offer his friends laxatives. I mean, why not? A good meal, does it not deserve a good shit? I only wish that at some point they organized a shit in. Maybe they jovially ruined a couple of white only bathrooms. Ah, one can only hope, but I doubt that it would make it into any history books. I love the man and his music and here I stand, humbly telling a fact that you didn't need to know about Louis Armstrong.
    Goodnight, and Godspeed.
