@@STEINBVG Cool beans man! They really have some great camera angles to give the viewer a good look at that thing. I'm not sure what caliber the movie gun was in. Those fake exploding rounds look similar to a .22 mag. but they are slightly longer brass and the rim is too big in diameter. They did a great job on converting the back of the bolt to a knob. That would have taken some time to machine, silver solder in place and then re-blue so it matches. I bet it's still hard to turn without a handle. What model .22 did you mod to make yours? They both look familiar but every company under the sun made similar single shot .22's back in the day. I can't tell if the movie prop version is a bolt actuated cocking version or if he needed to pull out on that knob to cock it.
@@tenlittleindians I show my whole research and build of this rifle from Rascal Savage 22lr( easiest to convert and looks identical in action to the movie) in my dedicated playlist and a thread at rimfire central . In the movie rounds looked like 22 magnum. It appears that he cocks the gun via old style slow lock- snowing it forward , with slight resistance at the end of the travel as the striker is caught and cocked by the sear, then follows a twist of the wrist and the stub of the former lot handle locks in place. Rascal came with the fast lock, it cocked on turning handle up. I snowed in the videos that with the rear knob it,s possible to cock the gun, but tough. And didn,t look like in the movie. There,s no additional action like pulling the knob to cock the striker. All in one I was able to rebuild the internals of the bolt very simply to slow lock and it. It became much easier to cock it. See my video. I ruled out a Cricket as a potential donor specifically that it cocks separately from bolt depositing a round . Overall my rifle is perhaps the only one in the world that looks,and is completely functional as the 2 props in the movie that had been allegedly built. Also it fits perfectly in my custom crutch.
@@STEINBVG So Rascal was the model name. I read Rascal in your videos but thought it was just a name you came up with. I've seen many single shot Savages in my day but didn't know they had names. The rifles that cock as part of the turning are always harder to turn. I'm sure I could design a dual function knob to replace the cocking knob on the back of Remington style single shots so it could turn the bolt and also cock it. It wouldn't be easy but it could be done. I think you picked a better gun for your conversion. My father had an FFL license while I was growing up and he traded many guns over the decades. I got to play with all of them.

If I were 30 years younger , even then I would be scared of potential legal repercussions of such a prank. I,m even hesitant to bring it to a range concealed in the crutch , even though technically it,s a disassembled fully legally modified rifle inside a “case”. I don,t want any hustle of any explanations to the authorities. But if somebody dared to do it, I would like to see a video.
If you can make one of these rifles chambered in .22-Hornet you would have the rifle used in the movie "Day of the Jackle." The .22-Hornet is a center fired cartridge. So the bolt and firing mechanism will be somewhat more complicated. The ballistic coefficient of the .22-Hornet is far better than a .22LR, and, at least 4 times the energy force at 200 meters.
Thanks for he reply. I put a lot of thought and research into this project before committing to it. There were a few conditions I set myself to follow. 1) economical 2) reversible mod for a donor rifle 3) functional on all accounts 4) as close to the movie look as possible. Looking at the frames in the movie one can see a small long straight , not necked shell rounds which look more like .22WMR, not Hornet. ruclips.net/video/90ZyH8yBTck/видео.html I wanted to go with that, but could not find an economical 16” barreled rifle in WMR. .22 LR gave me a plethora of options. The parts kit for transforming Savage Rascal into the movie rifle is not very expensive . And it takes only a few minutes to convert back and forth.
I read a thread on another vid about the caliber shown in the flick, and I always thought it looked like a .22 WMR, but a post said it was an obsolete caliber, .25 rim fire, last produced in the early 40s. The movie is set in 1963, so there would still be some around but almost impossible to trace. Snr. Gazzi, the gunmaker, said he’d convert an existing gun. I searched the caliber and pictures of it look exactly like the ammo shown when the Jackal takes delivery of the gun. Fantastic recreation of the movie gun, and I think the hardcover edition of the novel included a diagram like the Jackal showed Gazzi, who was impressed with the design. Great flick, seen it many times and always watch when it shows up on TCM.

The movie was made in 1973. Now I am not sure what they actually used for their prop rifles - 22 WMR ? Which was already available since 50s I believe. Or the 25 Steven’s ? I wish somebody knew for sure. Could you point me to the source where they know for a fact what was actually used in the movie? Ps. Actually the diagram in the book (I have ) shows 2 strut stock arrangement , but the movie just one. I followed the movie.

@garymitchell5899 1) my ‘silencer’ is oversized. I was lazy to cut it to the similar to movie proportions. If I did, I would cut the crutch to fit me better. 2) yes I watched the movie with every episode with the rifle frame by frame. I saw online that supposedly there were 2 functional props made for the movie. One resides in England and another not surprisingly in France. One thing in the movie is not shown( or edited out) is the complete removal of the parts of the rifle from the crutch fore the assassination , step by step. But I am sure there rifle did go in and out of their crutch just as expected.
@@STEINBVG I also wonder when The Jackal stows the three tubes inside the exhaust pipe 🤔and how large of diameter of pipe this would take?? Sometimes I suspend my disbelief and just enjoy this classy and stylish thriller.
My largest diameter of the crutch is 1.5” I think. I believe it would fit in the exhaust diameter pipe. But it would have to be a blind appendix out of the way of the exhaust.
Movies always take shortcuts and leave out important stuff. The Day of the Jackal is a really good movie from the early '70's about events supposed to take place in the early '60's. A couple of issues with almost all "sniper" movie scenes. Snipers carry a completely assembled rifle to the nest. The rifle has already been sighted to the exact distance needed with the round to be fired. Rifles can be broken down for egress from the nest, but are always carried in fully ready to make the shot. But the biggest mistake I see is with the suppressor/ammo. Suppressors are not silencers and there is still more noise than you think. The sound is not recognizable to novices as a gunshot, but there is noise. However, without subsonic ammo, there is a bullet crack that everybody will notice. So what I see in many movies, including The Day of the Jackal is a rifle being assembled in the nest, firing high velocity ammo with almost no noise. Or, firing subsonic ammo (less than about 1100fps) for a long 400-600 meter headshot. My integrally suppressed .308 firing subsonic 150g projectiles at about 1060fps drops about 18 inches at 120 meters and out past that, the beaten zone becomes a long vertical oval instead of a small circle. Want distance, need speed. Need stealth, get in close.
Thanks for the info. I,m neither a marksman nor a professional gunsmith. I defer the realism of the actual movie rifle to your expertise. I have no judgment to offer. I,m an amateur scholar of mechanics. The movie rifle was a challenge for me. It appeared to be using 22 magnum visually . I went with a much more available and cheap donor in 22 lr. Neither caliber perhaps is good enough to be an assassination rifle for a 400 ft headshot, subsonic and silenced . But I still liked the look of it and the fact of the clever concealment which I more or less successfully emulated. Thanks again
I think the bullets in the film are implied to be subsonic, or at least very low power (they mention it's a short barrel, and the cartridges themselves are quite small), that's why the Jackal has them converted to have exploding tips to guarantee a one-shot kill; I think the "silencer" he talks about is in addition to all that. There's also a scene where he does pre-sight the rifle, and fires a final test shot with one of the actual batch of exploding bullets he intends to use. It's a plot point of the story that the rifle has to be assembled in the nest because security is so tight that there's just no way to smuggle it in fully assembled.

Thanks. The scope does have the adjustments- 2 tiny brass screws. It will hold zero as well as expected from a cheap scope - removed and installed back to the same position on the rails. I obviously could invest in much more expensive scope and donor rifle, but the point was a proof of the concept…not a creation of a extremely pricey and precise instrument of assassination...

It must be very light in weight and it must have a short barrel. A short barrel... That's a pity. Lastly, there must be a silencer and a telescopic sight. Over what range will you fire? I'm not sure yet, but probably not more than 400 feet. Will the gentleman be moving? - Stationary. Will you go for a head shot or a chest shot? Probably head. What about the chances of a second shot? I might get the chance but I doubt it. I'll need a silencer to escape. Then you'd better have explosive bullets. I can prepare a handful for you. - Glycerin or mercury? Mercury, I think. It's much cleaner....... More Campari? - No, thank you. It seems then, the gun must be carried past Customs without arousing suspicion. Recognize that? The whole thing should be composed of a series of hollow aluminium tubes which screw together. The top one holds the rifle strut. The one below, the bolt with the breech inside it. The shoulder rest of the rifle doubles for both purposes without changing in any way. - That's excellent. The last two sections house the telescopic sight and silencer...... Here. It's very remarkable..... It's so simple.
Yes, I researched the net intensely. There are working versions of the gun, but mechanically and esthetically not close to the film. And none concealable in a crutch. There,s a very close to the original, but non shooting version - prop. Much more accurate than mine. I felt the challenge of the book’s gun smith imposed by the Jackal, when was making mine… Thank you for the kind words.

The rifle is not realistic. Unlikely silencer will not functioned good in 22wmr-bullet speed is very high. Must be subsonic. Maybe it was 32 or 38 calibre. But the job is really good.
Many movie guns are unrealistic…but this one is less so. 2 props for the movie were functional apparently. My rifle is only 22 lr replica of a make belief rifle in a fiction book and movie. But the writer gives a pretty good description of it and mentions only small caliber sporting rifle as a start for customizing. The movie shows apparently 22 WMR looking rounds used. I have no idea if their 10-12” narrow silencer can be made reasonably effective…my rifle only has a fake tube looking like a silencer which does nothing even for weak 22 lr. Thanks for watching
I,m open to your concrete constructive suggestions. Do you care to elaborate? In my defense: There were mechanical and legal limitations that imposed on the project. They prevented from an exact copying the original. For instance I could not have a short barrel. This was the only possible compromise to make a functional rifle and to place it inside a custom crutch. It is a very complicated task. The movie prop guys had no such limitations. There are no other rifle like this that I,m aware of that came as close to the movie in both look and full function. If you know one- place a link, I would appreciate. Thanks

If you watch the film he had it spread over both crutches.
Either you need to be a foot taller or reduce the length of that crutch.
@garymitchell5899 1) my ‘silencer’ is oversized. I was lazy to cut it to the similar to movie proportions. If I did, I would cut the crutch to fit me better.
2) yes I watched the movie with every episode with the rifle frame by frame. I was under strong impression that the rifle was hidden in only one crutch, even though the disassembly scene is not showing all the steps.

I saw online that supposedly there were 2 functional props made for the movie. One resides in England and another not surprisingly in France. One thing in the movie is not shown( or edited out) is the complete removal of the parts of the rifle from the crutch fore the assassination , step by step. But I am sure there rifle did go in and out of their crutch just as expected.

I also wonder when The Jackal stows the three tubes inside the exhaust pipe 🤔and how large of diameter of pipe this would take?? Sometimes I suspend my disbelief and just enjoy this classy and stylish thriller.
My largest diameter of the crutch is 1.5” I think. I believe it would fit in the exhaust diameter pipe. But it would have to be a blind appendix out of the way of the exhaust.

Movies always take shortcuts and leave out important stuff. The Day of the Jackal is a really good movie from the early '70's about events supposed to take place in the early '60's. A couple of issues with almost all "sniper" movie scenes. Snipers carry a completely assembled rifle to the nest. The rifle has already been sighted to the exact distance needed with the round to be fired. Rifles can be broken down for egress from the nest, but are always carried in fully ready to make the shot. But the biggest mistake I see is with the suppressor/ammo. Suppressors are not silencers and there is still more noise than you think. The sound is not recognizable to novices as a gunshot, but there is noise. However, without subsonic ammo, there is a bullet crack that everybody will notice. So what I see in many movies, including The Day of the Jackal is a rifle being assembled in the nest, firing high velocity ammo with almost no noise. Or, firing subsonic ammo (less than about 1100fps) for a long 400-600 meter headshot. My integrally suppressed .308 firing subsonic 150g projectiles at about 1060fps drops about 18 inches at 120 meters and out past that, the beaten zone becomes a long vertical oval instead of a small circle. Want distance, need speed. Need stealth, get in close.

I,m an amateur scholar of mechanics. The movie rifle was a challenge for me. It appeared to be using 22 magnum visually . I went with a much more available and cheap donor in 22 lr. Neither caliber perhaps is good enough to be an assassination rifle for a 400 ft headshot, subsonic and silenced . But I still liked the look of it and the fact of the clever concealment which I more or less successfully emulated.

I think the bullets in the film are implied to be subsonic, or at least very low power (they mention it's a short barrel, and the cartridges themselves are quite small), that's why the Jackal has them converted to have exploding tips to guarantee a one-shot kill; I think the "silencer" he talks about is in addition to all that. There's also a scene where he does pre-sight the rifle, and fires a final test shot with one of the actual batch of exploding bullets he intends to use. It's a plot point of the story that the rifle has to be assembled in the nest because security is so tight that there's just no way to smuggle it in fully assembled.

The scope does have the adjustments- 2 tiny brass screws. It will hold zero as well as expected from a cheap scope - removed and installed back to the same position on the rails.
I obviously could invest in much more expensive scope and donor rifle, but the point was a proof of the concept…not a creation of a extremely pricey and precise instrument of assassination...

It seems then, the gun must be carried past Customs without arousing suspicion.

The whole thing should be composed of a series of hollow aluminium tubes which screw together. The top one holds the rifle strut. The one below, the bolt with the breech inside it. The shoulder rest of the rifle doubles for both purposes without changing in any way.

Yes, I researched the net intensely. There are working versions of the gun, but mechanically and esthetically not close to the film. And none concealable in a crutch. There,s a very close to the original, but non shooting version - prop. Much more accurate than mine. I felt the challenge of the book’s gun smith imposed by the Jackal, when was making mine… Thank you for the kind words.

The rifle is not realistic. Unlikely silencer will not functioned good in 22wmr-bullet speed is very high. Must be subsonic. Maybe it was 32 or 38 calibre. But the job is really good.
Many movie guns are unrealistic…but this one is less so. 2 props for the movie were functional apparently.
My rifle is only 22 lr replica of a make belief rifle in a fiction book and movie. But the writer gives a pretty good description of it and mentions only small caliber sporting rifle as a start for customizing. The movie shows apparently 22 WMR looking rounds used.
I have no idea if their 10-12” narrow silencer can be made reasonably effective…my rifle only has a fake tube looking like a silencer which does nothing even for weak 22 lr. Thanks for watching

In my defense:
There were mechanical and legal limitations that imposed on the project. They prevented from an exact copying the original. For instance I could not have a short barrel. This was the only possible compromise to make a functional rifle and to place it inside a custom crutch. It is a very complicated task.
The movie prop guys had no such limitations. There are no other rifle like this that I,m aware of that came as close to the movie in both look and full function. If you know one- place a link, I would appreciate.
