    Grew up in northeast El Paso and climbed north Franklin and Anthony's Nose (from north at the Gap) many times in the early '60s. Still carry battle scars from ocotillo thorns and daggers. Rattle snakes usually let you know where they were, depending on the season. Woke up from a nap (under a rock overhang) in Franklins with a huge vinegaroon crawling on my forehead. Lots of tarantulas, sun spiders, and scorpions. A virtual paradise! I loved it, and I miss El Paso and southern New Mexico - wide open horizons.

      Hi John, it must have been nice to have that in your backyard. Yes, it is a tough environment, but one that is very beautiful. That must have been scary with the vinegaroon on you! I've seen a tarantula on N. Franklin, and then the rattlesnake coming down Anthony's Nose. I miss it out that way too, even though I don't live there. But I will be relocating to AZ in about 4 months or a little more. Thanks for watching!

    Very nice how you didnt just run up there, spin around a couple of times real fast and then ran down faster than you can fall but took your time to document the magnificent view from the top. I always thought that the summit was covered by clay like silt and that nobody ever goes up there. I tried getting to indian peak but had to turn back when the sun started going down. I want to try again very soon before I get too old and everything hurts. What 5 years does to camera tech that now I can take the insta 360 with me to take in ALL that it sees so I dont miss a thing on replay.

      Hi Garras, I try to spend a decent amount of time on the summits. I usually film a lot more that doesn't make the video. It's nice to take your time up there and enjoy the vies. Hopefully you can make it to Indian Peak, and if you get a chance, Anthony's Nose is great. Thanks for watching.

    I’ve been on several of those trails you mentioned at the base, but never have done Anthony’s Nose. Your off- trail summits are on another level man, the terrain is no joke out here. You did a great job conveying the ruggedness :)

      Hi ChucoHiker, Anthony's Nose was really fun. The views were really good up there too, although it was hazy if I remember looking at Sierra Blanca Peak and that area. Our route up was pretty good and the ridge was actually pretty nice. The scariest part was the snake in the wash on the way down. I wish I would've filmed it, but I just wanted to move away from it. You'll have to try it sometime. I think most people that do it go from the north, but I'm not sure what the shortest route would be.

      Hi eNdo, thanks for your comments. There are several potential routes up there - east, west, north, and probably even from the south all the way up the ridge from Mundy's Gap. You shouldn't have to worry about snakes too much now that it's getting colder. Have a great climb and thanks again!

    Wow Zachary, fantastic video and amazing accomplishment! I am not aware of anybody hiking up there from the East side. Just incredible and very inspiring. A buddy and I have already agreed to get up there later this year - probably November, but I think we are going to start from the North at Anthony's Gap. The views up there from your video are incredible and that ridge line you were hiking on looks a little treacherous to me, but definitely possible to hike. I was just up there this morning jogging again on Scenic and Sotol trails trying to find that trench you went up - yeah I saw it but it just looks so impossibly steep from down below, so thanks for showing me that there is hope in getting up there. Glad you got off the Lazy Cow - haha yeah that trail is an easy jog that does not really go anywhere except the Bowen Ranch House. I am also glad you got off Anthony Nose as early as you did (from the shadows I am guessing you finished around noon). We have had a good monsoon this season, and there were very strong thunderstorms and flash floods developing over the Franklin range every afternoon last weekend. Thanks again for this beautiful video. PS my wife wants to know what kind of camera you are using.

      Hi HelsSailing, thank you, and we both had a great time! Other than the rattlesnake scare at the bottom, it was awesome. I am glad we went that way, and I knew it was doable, but I also think it may be even easier just going to Tom Mays, up to Mundy's Gap, and then walking the whole ridge to the summit. There may be a few places that you have to climb around, but the ridge was really nice to walk along. There was one section that was a little treacherous that we were on. One rock that you had to climb around or over looked like it could come loose if you pulled too hard on it, and there were some steep drop offs. We thought we were staying on the Fence Line trail, but it ended up turning into another one. I picked up a trail map at the sign in though, so we found our way. It does look steep, but I've found that almost everything looks steeper from below and further away, then once you get on it you find it isn't as bad. I think we finished around 11 or 11:30. Everything looked really green. My camera is a Sony FDR AX-100 4K camera. Thanks again! My next trip out to your area will probably be the Organ Mountains again to so some of those peaks south of the Needle. I really like it out there! I'm going to try for the Guadalupe's or Big Bend again this weekend, and then maybe nothing for at least 6 weeks.

      Oh yeah traversing the ridge from Mundy Gap would be incredible but I think would take forever. I have done the ridge off trail from Mundy's to South Frankin Peak, and I love it, but that is some slow going! Yeah the desert here is about as green as it ever gets due to a very good monsoon season this year. I had my own encounter with a big rattler just the other day hiking the Anthony range in New Mexico. I am used to them by now, just stay out of striking distance, leave them alone and you will be ok.

    There isn't many documentaries on this peak so I'm glad you did it. Very detailed too! I loved it! Currently trying to see if it's at all possible to approach it from the North ridgeline. It looks steep for sure, but it might be possible. If not, I'll likely take the route you did or similar. Thanks for the video!

      Hi Alexander, I think I have the only video of it, although I haven't checked in awhile. Thank you, and I found a few trip reports online where people approached it from the north. The route we did was pretty fun. I'm not sure how long the north route would be, but I would think it would go to the west of the peak, and then come up the ridge the way we did. Maybe there is a more direct route though going straight up. It is a fun mountain though, and the views are great.

    Looking to hike the mountain from the trail that has Anthonys cave. Cut some miles compared to starting at the park where you did. I’m guessing since it would be more direct and possibly avoid the same detour it could take about 5 hours to round trip. I at least want to attempt to get up to the top however willing to turn around and try again if it becomes more than expected. The elevation gain is less than obviously the north Franklin peak but lack of trail will prove to be more difficult. Low key nervous to attempt!

    • @ZacharyTeich-HikingTrainer
      @ZacharyTeich-HikingTrainer  4 года назад

      Hi Sara, hopefully that route will work well for you. I think most people that climb Anthony's Nose start from somewhere north or west of it. I wish I had the GPS then, but I don't think the mileage on our route was too great. It's more fun when there is no trail. It can make you more nervous though, but the adventure is better that way. Yes, you can always turn around if you need to. If you can get a partner or two it makes it much less risky. Thanks for watching!

      I went and checked out the northern pass today and holy cow. I don’t think that’s the way I want to go. The Ridgeline from Mundy’s gap is looking more along the way I may go. Part of the problem is there is no cell service on the north end and if you don’t have gators or good pants yeah it’s not that good. The steep wash is looking more appealing though. Your video has me committed to getting to that view! Thanks for being responsive! If you ever come back and want to hike I needs people’s time hike with! Haha

    • @ZacharyTeich-HikingTrainer
      @ZacharyTeich-HikingTrainer  4 года назад

      @@sarayandell4009 I'm not sure what the best route is but our's was pretty straightforward. We could've even gone up the canyon/wash we came down and it may have saved time. I think going from Mundy's gap might be the most fun/least vegetated, but there might be some sections that would be more dangerous climbing right on the ridge. Or, you'd have to go around those areas. I think you can make it a number of ways. I don't know when I'll be back to the Franklin's (or the Organ's for that matter) again. I think the next that far east might be for Florida Peak by Demming. There's just so much to do. I hope you can make it up to the Nose soon.

      Hi aa, thank you and thanks for watching. I knew there were rattlesnakes there but didn't expect to see one. I think I also heard that there are mountain lions. I wonder if they live there permanently or just come in from other areas. I guess if they have enough to eat they can make it there.

    did you need climbing gear?

    • @ZacharyTeich-HikingTrainer
      @ZacharyTeich-HikingTrainer  3 года назад +1

      Hello, no you don't need gear. If I remember correctly there was only one section where a little bit of climbing was required, but it wasn't to the point of needing gear. Maybe it was class 3 at the most. There are a couple places where you are right on a defined ridge, and there may be some loose rock there, but otherwise it's pretty safe.

    • @ZacharyTeich-HikingTrainer
      @ZacharyTeich-HikingTrainer  3 года назад

      Hi Destro7000, I always want to avoid as much vegetation as possible, although I'm not always as successful as I want to be. Since it slows your progress and often pokes and cuts you, it's better to deal with as little of it as possible. It wasn't bad at all on this hike though. I think staying in the wash for the most part helped.

    • @ZacharyTeich-HikingTrainer
      @ZacharyTeich-HikingTrainer  3 года назад

      Hi Freddy, yes. I think they are about 80-90 miles away, so easily visible on a clear day. They were a little blocked by that other range, but they would probably be more visible from North Franklin Peak. Thanks for watching.

      Hi Dethrone55, thanks. We took trails up to the base of the range, which are easy to follow, but once we started up the slope there was no trail. We followed the ridge north to a saddle, and then from there I think there were some rock piles marking the way, but it is pretty easy to follow anyway.

      The Klomp, as far as I know you can hike anywhere in the Franklins, but I could be wrong. On the way up the trail to N. Franklin Peak there is a sign warning of an area of unexploded ordinances. But I've heard that the risk is pretty minimal. Maybe a detailed map of the area would show where you probably shouldn't go.
