The "Alex Honnlove" Interview: Alex Honnold on the first ascent of the Dawn Wall

- On the morning of January 14 2015, a few years before becoming the biggest name in rock climbing, a relatively low profile Alex Honnold was interviewed by a local news station on his friend Tommy Caldwell's imminent completion of the Dawn Wall.
Incorrectly named "Alex Honnlove" in the accompanying news article, Honnold gives a pretty classic interview. He tries and fails several times to explain why hard routes are hard, and then freaks out the interviewer by describing his plans to jug Tommy Caldwell's infant son up the East Ledges to meet him at the top of El Cap.

This interview has so many hilarious moments, just the way Alex seems so checked out and confused by some of the questions. And all the baby in the backpack questions. Had a good laugh

This interview was directly after Tommy climbed the Dawn Wall, he hadn’t free solo’d El Cap yet
Edit: it was actually while they were climbing the Dawn Wall, that’s why Alex was in El Cap that day

I thought Alex was just generally unimpressed with everything in life by the way he speaks about his/teams he’s in’s accomplishments, so it was illuminating to see him get so excited for his friend here.

True. Though really high level requires dedication and lots of repetition by yourself.
Like saying music is not solitary because people come to watch the show. But practicing 8 hours a day like say Guthrie Govan is.
Multipitch climbing you are either sitting at a belay or climbing by yourself 90% of the time, he is not wrong. Can’t even hear your partner half the time.
Dont need a belayer when you dont use ropes ;)

This is one of the worst interviewers I’ve ever seen. The editing isn’t great, the questions aren’t great, and she is NOT doing a good job at holding his attention
Ha; Honnold being interviewed by someone that has no idea about climbing.
She’s lucky she’s cute because those questions were pretty lame and worthy of just walking away.
Non climbers saying they don’t understand Alex’s explanation of hard climb is expected and rude to hear them say it. It’s aa waste of time and insult to explain to those who ask and never comprehend, unless they paying for your time. They will never understand. Know this, thrill seekers are a different breed that non thrill seekers will never understand
