  • Imagine marrying a man you thought was perfect, raising four kids together and later discovering he killed his previous wife and another person. It's a dark chapter of a Louisville woman's story who is breaking her silence for the first time more than two decades after the crime was committed.
Rebecca Simic and her children will share their story on ABC's 20/20 special on Friday, April 16 at 9 p.m. Simic sat down with her brother Steve and talked to WHAS11's Senait Gebregiorgis about how she has turned her pain into purpose.
"I'm still embarrassed and I'm 48-years-old and I still don't like to talk about it," Simic said.
She was 23-years-old when she first met Mark Winger in Springfield, Illinois while looking for a nanny job.
In 1995 police concluded that Bailey's mother Donnah, Winger's wife, was killed by a driver who took her home from the airport. Winger told police he acted in self-defense when he killed the driver in their home.
Simic became Bailey's nanny and later married Winger.
She and Winger had three more children together. About four years after Donnah's murder, investigators reopened the case. Winger was named a suspect.
In 2001 Winger was sentenced to life in prison for the murders of his previous wife Donnah and the driver who brought her home from the airport.

Heartbreaking story💔 I couldn't stop crying for the victims, for the pain of the family, the kids😥 I'm glad justice was made. It is very scary to see how a loving father could also be a murderer, or vice versa. Violence against women is a big issue and it is heartbreaking the amount of women that suffer abuse, have to go to a shelter, or get killed😥. Specially, during these difficult times, the cases of domestic violence have increased significantly and women are at higher risk, so more support and education in matters of domestic abuse and violence is needed as well as more mental health support for victims and their families. I'm glad the family is supporting women victim of abuse in her memory💜

Am I the only one who thinks this is a weird ass story? Like honestly okay what was the motive for killing her? The affair? He didn’t want the baby? Like it doesn’t make sense, he didn’t kill her for the affair because Deann was still married to her husband. So why kill her? Like it really doesn’t make sense honestly. Deann it’s something with her! So you slept with him for 6 months after Donna was killed and never said anything about the comment he made about Donna being gone. Can someone please explain because it really doesn’t make any sense, like he knew he s was going to be stuck with the baby after she was dead like it didn’t make any sense

    • @MoniB888
      @MoniB888 3 года назад +3

There could have been a few- could be Deann wanted him to/promised to leave her husband/couldn't cope with the guilt (🙄 doubt it but who knows what was said), could be that Donna found out about it & was going to leave him (doubtful tho, she probably would have told her sisters, unless embarrassed/not sure, but threatening to take away their daughter, could be a huge motive).
There could have been a life insurance not mentioned, the lawsuit filed against the ride company, or their faith frowning upon divorce, etc.
Interesting she only came forward after seeing him moved on & happy (he's a disgusting murdering dirtbag, I'm just saying she seems like a lying, jealous beotch as well).

It truly is weird. This isn't the first time I read about this story but for some reason after watching few more clips I got the feeling that this man was obsessed with impregnating women in a way? Rebecca described his joy when she was pregnant with his first biological child as a "victory" for him! Maybe he thought less of Donnah because she couldn't get pregnant?
Also, he seems to be a narcissistic who is secretary obsessed with murder, read about the Solicitation of Murder part in his Wiki, he was plotting murders from prison!
As for Donnah's friend, she says that she suffered from guilt and depression and her therapist advised her to talk to the police. Also, it's possible that she believed the story he told initially and then later connected the dots.
Keep in mind, this man wanted to look like a hero, being stuck with a baby was the least of his concerns, help was going to be thrown his way nonetheless.

I don't know what to think of her either. I understand she came in to be a nanny after Donnah's death. Yet, I don't understand how she could get involved so quickly with a man who just lost his wife (especially in that horrific way). I don't understand why she couldn't be just the nanny and do her job. How was she able to get involved with him so quickly? That would have been the last thing on my mind...even if he was trying to date me...I wouldn't be rushing to date and then have sex with a man who just lost his wife tragically. I would be thinking he needs to grieve...the last thing he needs to do is get seriously involved with anyone. That should've been a red flag to her. It wasn't like the wife had been sick with cancer or something and then died. I have heard of husbands having a hard time raising young children on their own when their wives die...but that's usually when the husband's wife has been sick for a while and there has been some preparation that she will only have so much time. People can understand that you want to move on eventually. But...this dude hurried up and starting sleeping with the nanny.

Are you not comprehending this story at all? Have you listened to the entire story? From Bailey's POV, Rebecca is only mother she's known. Her biological mother gave her up when she was born, and Donnah adopted her. Then three months later Donnah gets murdered, Mark hires Rebecca later as a live-in nanny. Rebecca did not take her hostage, she took the job to help take care of a child, and while she did marry Mark, she did the best she could despite the circumstances. Imagine raising four kids, one of whose father killed her prior adoptive mother. Raising kids is hard, but I have to give her an A+ to her for dedicating her life to raising her kids.

I understand what you are saying but I look at the following: At the time she got involved with him, his wife was already deceased so it's not like she had an affair with a married man. I also applaud her for accepting that he is guilty instead of being delusional like so many other people that continue to defend people when it's obvious they are wrong. And this last point speaks volumes....I applaud her for continuing to raise the girl as her own daughter, when she started out as her nanny. The child was originally given up by her biological teenage mother, then adopted by Donna, who was of course murdered....so the child lost 2 mothers and lost her adopted father because he murdered her adopted mom and is in jail. This woman is actually amazing in that she continued to love and raise the child as her own along with her other children and that says a lot about her character.
