Four wonderful vintage horns are played here, each with two mouthpieces; Olds Supers, both trumpet and cornet, and Olds Recordings...Again - both trumpet and cornet. The trumpets are more popular today by far, I believe, but I'd let both trumpets go before I'd let the cornets get away. Personally, I think these cornets models are two of the very best cornets available today. I play the trumpets first with a medium-shallow mouthpiece, the GR64MS, then with a lovely Trent Austin Trumpet-Flugel mouthpiece. The cornets are played first with a GR63#2 cornet mouthpiece, then with Mark Curry's outstanding VC (Vintage Cornet mouthpiece). Enjoy! :)

Winner of this week's mouthpiece safari (from a listener's perspective) is.......the Super cornet with the Curry VC!

I would have to agree that the Super Cornet is just a joy to play. And I have a similar collections of LA Olds trumpets and cornets, and if I had to keep just one for playing, my '47 Super would be it. I think the brass tone ring adds some mojo as well. :)

I am a beginner learning to play a 1960s OLDS cornet. OLDS cornet sounds seem more trombone-like sound. Still having difficulty with correct embouchure. I get tired after a little practice and then air sound comes out. Lots of physical on lips, teeth, etc. Does this seem correct? and normal? Thanks, Mr. Angelo@@JonathanMilam1

Man, I love that piece 9:10. very nice. not sure if you got good room dynamics there but nice job! Really made that cornet sing!

I use a nice mic and a little mixer; not to distort but to add a bit of reverb, like we would have (hopefully) if we were playing in a large concert hall. That Olds Super Cornet, in the 9:10+ clip, is a superb horn. I never want to be without one of these in my horns. :) Again - thanks for commenting. :)

It takes time to get the muscles working together for an embouchure, or chop setup. Here's a video from a truly excellent player, lots of good info here. The guy doing this video is the Principal Trumpet of a large US symphony. When he begins discussing his warm up, pay close attention, 'buzz' your lips along with him... It's a wonderful way to beging warming up and achieving good, proper lip muscles. This may help you as much or more than any info you can find.

And this channel has the accompaniment for you to buzz to....
