Model Railroad Layout Building DPM Townhouse #1 How To

  • Hello, welcome to my RUclips Channel. I have produced several build video's over the past several months with great response and so I have continued this adventure with the Design Preservation Models Townhouse #1.
Design Preservation Models (DPM) have been a staple in the Model Railroading industry for many years with their injection molded models. This model, the DPM Townhouse #1 is part of a Townhouse collection available in O, HO and N scale. There are at least 3 of these Townhouse kits I am aware of and I have built several of them. Design Preservation Models is a Division of Woodland Scenics, one of the the leaders in model railroad building tools, scenic items and many other Model Railroad related items.
This model build was mostly meant to share technique on the DPM construction and a really heavy weathering to indicate a worn building and show the answer to many questions. The intention is to use this in an area on the layout where the buildings and surroundings are not well kept and so the building itself is by all rights, just down right nasty. The DPM models are in my opinion one of the best models on the market for their realism. Design Preservation Models really did a lot of research in creating such great modeling kits.
A little about the weathering, this model and video was put together to answer many questions about weathering model railroad structures. The weathering is very heavy on this model, even the windows are not immune to some weathering powders. The model's weathering is applied through many different techniques and I hope I have captured enough here to answer the many questions I have received.
I have to admit, this build was a bit rushed! and the normal time and care taken with some of the details was a bit below standard for me. I did however plan this build more so for weathering and the over all general construction, so, I hope the lack of detail on some of this build isn't seen as normal model practices.
If you feel so inclined, please Subscribe and comment! I would greatly appreciate it, I do enjoy hearing the feedback positive or negative. Clicking that like button on my video's also induces mass amounts of inspiration for more build video's.
One of the most inpiring DPM build video's on the web is by Miles Hale take a look at it here:

Mike, I put blue masking tape over the whole face then cut out the windows with a sharp blade. Set these pieces aside, spray paint the windows. When dry remove the tape from the building and put the saved cutout pieces over the windows, spray paint the building either white or grey for the grout lines and when dry you can dry brush the brick color.

Hello Davy, I am happy that you find these video's useful. I started doing these video's for that reason that I couldn't at the time find good quality video's to learn from. These video's are popular, it shows me I made a good choice in making them for everyone to utilize. One thing I didn't seem to cover really well though, be sure to always clear any paint from glue points! Thanks for the comments and compliments.

I’ve used DPM Models for both HO and N scale, they’re hard to beat! Whether you model pre turn of the century (1800 to 1900) they’ll fit, even modern day they still fit, especially if you model “older” business districts. Their quality is hard to beat.

Mike, Awesome Build !!! Your comment about wanting to make the ductwork more realistic, just put a small amount of model putty on the inside of the turn and use a small round file to make the inside curve. As a retired Career Fire Department Captain I have been up on the roof’s of more old brick buildings than I care to think about, and one thing I noticed was that the brick chimneys are always against and or part of one of the brick walls.

Great video Mike - it's good to see how others approach building these models. GREAT A/C UNITS! I also like the weathering effects you get. In case you're interested, consider the following (and if you're not interested, ignore the rest of this post!):
I don't know if you're painting the interior black in order to have a very dark background through the windows, or if you're worried about "light leak" through the plastic walls. If it's the former, here's an easier way to make a view block: cut a piece of black construction paper; make the height the same as the inside height to the roof, and make the length 2xL+W/2, where L is the length of the side walls and W is the building width. After the window glazing is in and the roof is attached, slip the paper in from the bottom, with the two ends in the front left and right corners. The paper will make a U shape, with the bottom of the U just touching the back wall.
I always glue the walls together before painting. (If you desire a sturdier build, glue a 1/16" square length of styrene into the inside of each corner.) Once the glue is dry, you can prime and paint the entire building. I really like the way you made the front brick a different color from the rest of the building: this was commonly done to save money by using cheaper brick on the sides and back. In your case, this is easily done by applying raw umber washes to the front - keep applying successive washes until you get the color you like. (You can even use a burnt sienna wash in there somewhere to make the brick redder.) If you have dramatically different brick colors, you would paint the entire building in the lighter color, then mask and paint the darker color. I never paint my mortar lines, so you'll need to experiment to see if this is better done before or after you apply the washes.
(By the way, I ALWAYS apply several wash coats, even when my brick is all the same color. I find the washes give just enough variation in the brick color to give the brick a natural color variation. If I want a faded sign on my building, I apply a decal over the base color, then apply the washes right over the sign along with the rest of the brick. For a REALLY faded sign, use a sponge to dab some of the base color around the edges - or even in the middle - of the sign to make the sign "disappear.")
One final tip: Roomettes make interior kits for buildings of this sort, and they have a kit designed specifically for this DPM kit: it's the Banfield Street #1. These are easy to install and they come complete with LED lighting. You do NOT need a JustPlug lighting system to use these LEDs! Just clip off the connector, add a 640 Ohm resistor, and connect to 12 VDC.

You would want at the very least a 1024, look up the specs on the Sony HDR-PJ260, I used these for my video's. These would be like 12 years old though camera is key really to get a good clear picture and on a tri-pod as much as possible. Might find one of these used for cheap now! I used 3 of them for different angles but one would suffice I think.

I purchased the n scale Town and Factory set of 12 shops and one factory. I also purchased a few more kits to round out my small Mayberry-like town. I have 24 DPM n scale kits in just my small town so, your tips will come in very handy. Trying to paint the windows will be fun! (sarcasm) I do like this paint scheme. Due to the small size of my buildings, I will skip the mortar and roof details. That would make me crazy. I thought I might try (at least on the first one) painting the windows and doors first and then, to help cover the overlap, paint the bricks. Most all the buildings will have three paint colors: the wood trim (usually the place for colorful paint), one for the concrete/stone and one for the brick color. I like the idea of that black cardboard inside to block the see through to the other side and to make the windows appear alive. I also bought some Blair Line Shop Signs, #1 & #2 so all my builds will be labeled as to their purpose: Barber Shop, Bakery, Hotel, etc. Thanks again.

It sounds like you have many to build, would be a great few video's. N scale is pretty small, I am not sure if I could do N Scale, just really hard to see. Great tips. I like the blackboard made into an X and placed into the buildings to make the windows reflect instead of looking through an empty building. I enjoy making buildings without all the tedious interiors. This will be a great help. I save all the clear plastic sheets off of packaging products for my windows. I never thought of the plastic signs at home depot for making buildings, now I have to try that to.

At 12:00 minutes in, , I use a smaller brush to paint my DPM detail, including the TOP of the sills. Half the size you're using. Also, sometimes Under a lighted magnification stand so I can actually see what I'm doing. At 21:00, about duct work. At every four feet along a duct, there is a seam. Take a very thin piece of flat , narrow plastic, glue that around the duct (every 4'-0") and sand it nearly smooth. It will leave the connecting strap that you want. The actual strap is maybe two inches wide by 1/4 inch thick, so pretty small. It is all painted silver or white after assembly on the roof in real life. For the model, I would build the entire assembly OFF the model, paint it, weather it and then put it on the roof. Hope that helps.

Another cute build, Mike! Some comments along the way:
    1. You asked about easier window painting - gosh, there are lots of smaller brushes than what you're using out there! Do the edges with one and then fill it in with a big one.
    2. One roof detail that's missing: an access hatch! There has to be some way up there.
    3. One advantage to individual window glass pieces is that they don't reflect like one big sheet, just like real buildings. So amen to your comment about how it probably should be done!
    4. I always use darker paints on heavily-framed windows like DPM's to reduce the visual size. If you plop down your DPM next to a building with, say, Grandt Line windows, they'll look like they were built with 2x4s! Sometimes I drybrush them with a lighter shade of the same color, which brings just the edges and corners out.
    5. I've had good luck with duct work by chopping some little squares of thin styrene, just bigger than the cross-section of the planned duct. I made the duct in pieces and used these as "joiners" in between - they look like standing-seam joints found in real ductwork.
    Cheers!

carmium Really, Really great tips, thanks for sharing your thoughts and comments. I have tried the square method for the duct work and do like the look and will probably make some like this in the future. For the mine I built sometime back, I would like to use some galvanized round (just seems more appropriate). You have any thoughts on this?
As for the windows, watching this video really enlightened me on the brush, it is well zoomed and I can actually see what I am doing, I am a bit hard to see I guess :) watching the video though does show all of my outside of the lines coloring!
I will need to set some of these buildings out with some others to visually see what your saying about the window frames. I have found that I really like the look of the windows in a lighter color, but, never considered the scale of these frames next to a reduced size window (like you say the grandt).
Carmium, thanks again for writing, much appreciated and looking forward to seeing some of the build projects come up on your channel :)

Hey Mike, for your duct work try cutting small strips of copy paper and glue it where you want seams. paint the paper before cutting to make that part easier I use a paper cutter to to cut straight lines, in fact its a great tool to have for craftsman modeling. Use canopy glue where you don't want any glue to show up, such as gluing on the paper strips. Painting DPM or any molded in details, use a micro brush and cut some painters blue tape down into smaller sizes to mask off the detail, like for those windows. I also add some window cleaner to my acrylic paints to help it flow into the details as a wetting agent. Do this on your mortar and top weathering it really helps. and last tip to share, try using 80-90% rubbing alcohol (this cuts down on the water in the product) to fix your powders, you can also use chalk pastels ground down with the edge of razor and scrapping the chalks into powders. this will do the same as those expensive hobby powders. purchase a basic set of earth tones to get a good selection. any artiest brand names will work, stay away from low grade cheep chalks they just don't hold up and the colors fade with time, I like Remnant and Grumbacher brands, also only use the chalk type not oil pastels.. hope these help you some. my email is joe.cohen@gorvv.com if you want to drop notes back and forth.

I watched the DPM #1 building video. I sometimes use a single edge razor blade to keep the paint off the surrounding areas. Press the blade into the corner of the two surfaces. when the painting is done, take the blade away, wipe the blade clean, and move to the next section. It's a lot faster than using tape, and the blades can be broken into smaller pieces to get into smaller areas. I have used a X-acto chisel blade for tight spots.

To paint the windows and doors, paint these parts first with airbrush, then apply a tape mask after dry. Spray the building walls and then remove masks when dry. Or, paint the windows, doors, and trim with a fine brush first, then the wall surfaces.

Bingo! I was waiting for someone to post this tip. Also, it is tough to cut and glue in the window glass pieces after the walls are glued together. I've tried both methods of masking for walls and windows and neither is worth the effort vs carefully painting each window frame. You just gotta do it.

A great build. Here are my thoughts: You mentioned a couple of times that you "rushed this, or this didn't come out perfect etc". It looks great and here's the deal. You and I are building layouts. I have a friend who does stunning work, but it took him 12 yrs to finish one model. I don't have that kind of time. At some point you have to say "its good enough" and move on. Once all the kits are on the layout, they will blend in nicely and the eye will be drawn from detail to detail, it wont focus on one aspect. I enjoy all your builds, the music and even your voice is so calming LOL. Keep up the great work. JD.

    • @ModelerManMike
      @ModelerManMike  10 лет назад

Thanks JD for the compliments, I am glad you enjoy these video's, they are fun to put together, not as fun to record during a build but they are fun on the cutting room floor. I appreciate the insight on building, your right, I always say the difference between a good model and a absolutely stunning model is only time. If you spend the time, you will have photo realistic models. On this model, I did rush and for the time I spent, I feel it the duct work should have been a bit better. If you have seen many of my video's, I really enjoy the roof's! I know I look down on my model buildings and this area is always what I like to spend a bit more time on. You may find if you see this model on my future layout (I dont have one yet, but will when we get back to the states) that this duct work on this model has changed. JD, I appreciate your kind words and, they are comforting. You and I both know that as modelers, we have a tendency to know where these things are we could have done a little more time on. JD, Thanks so much for the comments on my video, I really appreciate it and look forward to any other comments you may like to post. I have several build video's you may enjoy, if you enjoy this one

Oh, see, this is something that would be different with an O Scale, using corn starch. The morter would be larger and so that would give it a better look. You modest son of a gun you that shit looked awsome as hell. That thing was freakin beautiful and detailed to the max. Im surprised you didnt build mini desks and people doing paperwork in the windows too. I watch so damn many model railroad scenery videos and you just hit that model clean out of the park sir that thing was beautiful when you finished. You are very skilled. That model was super beautiful bro. If you added some dim ambient lighting to that model on your layout for evening and night scenes that would be the max touch. Like a couple dim led’s at the entrance with a covered porch look, and light up a couple of the office windows with some dim ambient led lighting i just dont see how your work could be touched. Of course there are so many added elements that you could add to a model. If we added all that we wanted we would go crazy. But a model like the one you just built i see nothing wrong or odd with a man spending a week and maybe 15 hours on a model like that to achieve the ultimate look with what they are trying to achieve. Damn your awsome. Im subscribing after i hit enter on this comment. I freakin loved that vid sir. Nice damn work.

A trick I came across for DPM and similar buildings is to use your dial calipers to measure a window. Then cut sheet styrene to that size for all the windows. (Cut strips for width and use a chopper for length)
Spray paint the windows, then when the paint is very dry (24 hours ) use a little white glue to put the styrene over the windows.
Now you spray paint the walls.
The styrene should pop out without much fight. (White glue does not hold non porous items) You can also hand paint the sills with the windows still covered.
I built that model a few years ago. BLMA sells window air conditioners in HO, and I used a few of those on it.
I also modified one window to be open. I have a figure leaning out the window looking down at the wrecked air conditioner he dropped out of the window.
    It always gets a laugh.

    • @ModelerManMike
      @ModelerManMike  10 лет назад

Oh, now here are some really neat idea's, including a scene even! :) Thanks pmsteamrailroading! The BLMA are they the lazer cut little tiny metal ones? If so, I had intentions of using these, I just never got to it for the video. I do plan to use some of these window units on another build video eventually. They look cool and they are a great little add on.
I am certainly going to try your suggestion on the windows and see how that goes for me. I am planning another DPM Build that will include a couple of buildings at once and this means alot of windows! I have actually masked off the entire building (kind of the opposite of what your saying) and had decent success with that. In all, I am really lazy when it comes to doing some of these models. Recording the build and building takes so much time already, I cut corners where I can.
Would like to see some pictures of your models and scenes, do you have a facebook page? if so, look me up modelerman mike
Thanks so much for your comments and suggestions, you may very well see these in a future video. Hope fully, when that time comes I can get back here and find this so I can mention you!

Great video, full of useful tips.
You asked about easier detail painting... Try propping your wrist up on a box or block of wood the same size as the model. Sometimes several low blocks works better than one tall one, so you can stack as many as you need. Also, keep turning the model over so the the surface you are painting faces up and the edge you are working on is away from you where you can best see the tip of the brush.

  • @CoroPlanesLLC

I know this is an old video, but for anyone who is new here... Painting the small parts can be done using pin striping brushes if you want a real fine line and awesome control of where your paint goes. Pin stripe brushes can be had for $15 to $50... you choose your quality.

ModelerManMike Awe man. It came out the wrong way. Its a jokeI tell my friends who ask me where I get the patience for working on small models. As for getting paint within those small areas, I would use an airbursh with a fine point needle either .25mm or .35mm. with psi around 20-25 Dilute the paint with Createx reducer for a 50/50 mix. Its not a quick job but i'm always happy with the results.

My technique for windows is to paint the whole building the color you want your windows, then cut thin (0.10") styrene to the dimensions of the windows. Use rubber cement to put them in place. Paint the rest of the building the color of your bricks. The rubber cement makes it easy to remove the window masking, and resulting windows are free of overspray or any other issues normally seen with DPM models.

To paint the windows and doors use tamyia masking tape ( get the ones in a tape dispenser easier to use than just the roll)

Hey No Problem Mike. I love to watch your videos. A suggestion is why don't you use a Chisel brush for the windows.

You watch Kevin! Next time you see me painting these, I will be using a chisel and, probably some better glasses :) Thanks for the comments!

Mike for a short version, you put in a lot of good work my friend. And the model came a great! A lot of good tips on this video, and your other videos too.I specially like the roof detail! And you know someone should tell the makers of this models to revise their molds, they are probably using the same molds that they started with. Anyway great how to video my friend! :-) I can wait for another of your builds or just what ever video you come out with, you always have something interesting. Until next time partner! RT

RT, so glad your able to stop by, I appreciate the comments and hope that your enjoying these video's as much as you say. I watch your channel as you know and finding you commenting here is great, to know I am sharing something you enjoy. RT, I have written to both walthers and Woodland Scenics about a few things, one, the mine and kits like it with those clear silly windows they provide and to WS about the quality of the molded parts. As you might expect though, no response. :( Not much you can do when their products continue to sell as is. Just as a bit of info, I am planning a video on LED lighting, I hope you can get some use out of it to! ok!
      Until next time! :)

For painting the windows, you have to have your hand resting on a fixed surface like a book (or two) and then bring the work to your hand. Then you only have to pivot your fingers. Same concept as a painter's hand rest. I also find that lower cost acrylic paint needs to be cut some so it flows better. Some colors also cover better than others, but am yet to find any solid discussion on this. There seems to be too much guessing and testing at times.

North Central Lines On30 Thanks for the comments! Brush I think is the big one here, I will put this together in the next DPM build I do. Appreciate the feedback!
