  • In this video, I unbox, paint, weather the Walthers City Apartment Building. This is a background building in HO scale made by Walthers. I build this with some roof detail that is covered decently in this video. Using Walthers Roof Details and Bragdon Enterprises weathering powders, I cover the roof for you guys. HO Scale brickwork is lightly covered as well, you might find other video's on my channel that cover the Brick work in more detail, this video I wanted to share more of the roof detailing. Hope you enjoy! Please, leave feedback with questions if needed.
    A couple of references in this video might need explaining, Art mentioned "more masking than I would do", I mention that "Art might like this, it includes a lot of masking". Art has a great channel, check him out arthurhouston3. Second, Eric from IMRROcom is N Scale, I impatiently await video's from these two (and many others) every week. I mention to Eric something about not having any N Scale products. Check these two out, really good showing of video's and insight.
    If you see any boxed models in my video's you would like to see put together, please let me know and I will do what I can to get them up here for you ok!
    As always, please like, thumbs up, share my video's! If you aren't subscribed, please do so, this will help me get more features on RUclips.

    It appears you are an artist as well as a craftsman. Very nice. So glad i have doscovered your site. I started building HO train houses and buildings when i was a kid..and even a little bit into my adult years. I used to do stuff like this with them -not at the skill level you portray..but i was having fun decorating them with similar ideas such as you have used..incl the white paint between the bricks, and soot coming down walls, etc. I had the buildings in a box in my mom's basement, but since she moved..no one has yet located the box. I have built a couple buildings since..and will probably continue to do so..but i keep hoping someone will locate that box. That would probably fan the flames of my getting back into this cool hobby. Thank you.

      Hello James, I was the same as a young one, 10-11 wanted a model railroad. Just never happened for me. Not till I was older and married with kids did it really kinda start sinkin in that I wanted to do it. By the time my kids were old enough, they had no interest and now, they are all grown and I am working to get something together anyway. I really do like the structures probably more so than the trains! Its very time consuming to build them the way I like but one day, maybe they will be on a layout or something that I can call a model railroad. I havent put out any video's in a long time but have settled again into a new property and may be able to do so. I am planning to make some more video's hope you can catch them to. Thanks so much for the compliments, its my thought anyone can do this if they have the time.

    I like using drywall mud for brick morter, easy to clean off and take's weathering well, very realistic when done right.

    • @ModelerManMike
      @ModelerManMike  10 лет назад

      Hey, thats an idea, never tried it. does it clean off well? how about chipping when its dry?

    • @Jerryslife67
      @Jerryslife67 10 лет назад

      The trick is to wipe off as much as possible before it dries completly, a moist paper towel does good after it dries, takes a little practice but like I said it looks awesome when done well. It may chip a little at the edges and corners but sometimes that adds to the realism.

    I'll tell you about another really cool Walthers kit if you can get your hands on one and that's the Ford plant office building they made some years back. I was lucky enough to get my hands on one and I converted it into a city hospital with the big ER entrance in the rear, a huge heliport on the roof and custom signs & decals to make it look like a real hospital in every way and everyone who saw it wanted one, lol. I even found this outfit that made highly detailed 1:87 scale Huey choppers that I totally converted to "ile-Flight" helicopters and they sold like hotcakes on eBay until the company went belly-up and I couldn't get anymore??? Great videos my friend.

      Howdy Mike, I haven't forgotten about the pics & are still going thru discs when I'm in my train room from time to time. The problem is, I have several hundred discs with pics on them & I'm not real good at properly marking the disc so, I have to go thru them one by one, lol. What I did luck out & find is, I located a guy on eBay who had a partial case of those 1:87 scale Huey helicopters I told you about so, if you have a need to one or two, let me know & we'll take care of that amigo. Later, Bo (Bernhardt).

    great quality of the video - professionally done. I like the use of the cheaper acrylics and the spray can paints. And your detailing - nice. (can you stay in the lines and paint all the windo frames and sills? You could finish them all in about 84 hours.)

    • @ModelerManMike
      @ModelerManMike  6 лет назад +1

      84 hours is about right! What a long haul that would be. on this building, they were actually separate so it made it easy. This was a fun build, actually pretty quick to. If I can do it cheap and look good, thats what I go for so many spend thousands on some of the higher end stuff I guess. James, thanks for the feedback and the compliments, much appreciated. You might also like my new river mine build video, I think its probably the most popular based on views anyway.

    Not bad. Maybe speak a bit more distinctly, but a good project and the scene changes are nifty. Two comments from a retired electrician/ACR tech, though. 1. Conduit is laid out and installed with 90 degree bends only in the application you've modeled. 2. Rust on those roof top HVAC units starts at the seams between panels, so to give it a more realist look/feel, rust the seams completely before rusting any place else.

    Mike just a thought. When you go and illluminate this building a good thing to do may in fact be this. Slip a little piece of construction paper inside the model, form separate walls and floors. That way, when you light it you may achieve a look of some empty apartments either through non rental or residents out for the evening.

I understand MAYBE the Windows while still on the sprues..but if your going to use plastic solvent cement to assemble the building paint interfers with that bond and raw plastic you can putty,sand,carve etc..then paint after that...

      Hello Jim, thanks for the comments :) That booth I actually purchased from ebay, it wasnt to expensive. So, to answer your question, no I didnt construct it. It works great for what I do, bout the right size and it can collapse down to a small size for storage. The one I purchased was like this one listed on ebay, it wasnt this expensive though, you might find it cheaper www.ebay.com/itm/Hobby-Airbrush-Spray-Booth-Kit-Exhaust-Filter-Extractor-Set-Craft-Paint-Figurine-/141477787802?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item20f0bbb89a

    • @ModelerManMike
      @ModelerManMike  10 месяцев назад

      Hello Ricky, sorry for the late reply, you know, its hard to say. depends on the location maybe? Hard question for me to answer without some background, like period of your layout, general weather in that area. All that if your all about trying to do something "real". In all, for me, I just do what I feel! Do you have any videos that show your layout and how this color might blend with the existing buildings? If I were to shoot from the hip on this, when I think meat packing, I think bland colors, soft browns, greens maybe even a dark yellow. I am from Amarillo, crossroads to major railroads and IBP, meat packers and all of these buildings I have ever seen were really bland "cheap" colors.

    Hi Mike
    Did you have to sand the wall edges as you did in the DPM townhouse #1?

    • @ModelerManMike
      @ModelerManMike  9 лет назад

      Hey Jim, thank you for the comments. The Walthers models are much different from the DPM models in that they are cast differently. The Walthers don't require so much pre-work to construct aside from painting. This model, the City Apartment Building went together very easily, the parts are made to connect seamless. This is a very easy build, the detail can kick it up a notch of course but I have seen this model on layouts with the plastic unpainted and just glued together. I would bet, without any painting or extra work, it would go together in 30 minutes, the windows being the large part of the work. Its colored plastic though, and it probably would look fine without much work.

    Darn You! Your just like Vinny (bnsf 6951) ya'll make everything look so easy until I get out to the work shop and start trying to do what you all have showed us to do and everything just goes to thunder. I have a very keen eye for perfection but just can't produce it but you, your second to NONE! You do amazing work which just turns out beautiful. Was wondering how long you have been doing this and also how big a layout and what scale you might model? Thanks for sharing!

      David, lol! this caught me by surprise and I had to stop and think for a second how to reply to this! In all, it is easy but what you dont see in the video are the mistakes, there are a few and things that dont work dont make the video! :) Lil secret for you :) dont tell anyone! I have only been modeling HO Scale buildings for a few years, but have been through a lot of trials and just kind of learn what works for me. I am sure anyone with any modeling experience can do this, it just takes a lot of time and a little bit of thought! I really hope you enjoy the video's, again, they are here because I know I want to see vid's like this myself! So go make one! Just edit out the spilled paint on the floor, the stuck fingers to the model and the wife walking in wanting to watch some girly movie with you! lol! Have fun!

      David Durbin Hey! It is a breeze, but dont expect it to be smooth sailing all the way, I also run into a hitch from time to time, dont be discouraged if you hit a snag. Half the fun is figuring out how to best do things and like with me, thats been completely through messing up! :) Learn from my mistakes. I am not perfect, let me assure you! its just patience and working it out. Hey, David, now, take some pictures or some video so we can see the process being used! would like to see that! Good luck on your build!

    You know what every high rise HO scale model kit is missing. Elevator head enclosure. I have a half dozen tall Walters and Bachman kits and not one has a small extra enclosure for the elevators lifting mechanisms. Guess HO scale people are all athletic and don't mind walking up a dozen flights of stairs. Nice job though.

    Mike - thanks for doing this video. Great job. One suggestion - drop the background music. Just because the technology allows you to do something doesn't make it a good idea. I'm watching your "how-to" video to learn something, not to listen to background music. My ears can concentrate on one thing at a time - either your voice explaining your process or the music. Otherwise - great job. Thanks. EEB

      Hey EEB, Thanks so much for leaving comments. I can really appreciate your views on video production and being on the recieving end of watching ones video's, however, I do enjoy making video's of the builds I do and I also enjoy the making of these video's. Its all part of the hobbies I enjoy. I do like to run the video's with music as I enjoy the music with them. I will say that on this one, the voice really isnt loud enough and the BG music is a bit on the loud side. Hope my views on this doesnt keep you from trying to enjoy the videos. I have a new one coming out soon, let me know what you think about this one, I am really working to equilize so the naration stands out more ok! Thanks for the comments and compliments!

      Mike,
      Again - great video. I had already built the City Apt Bldg - a really nice kit, to be sure. Since, in my case, given the placement of the bldg. on my layout, the roof is too high to be visible, I went light on rooftop details (although, thanks to George Selios, I am a big believer in roof top details). As for the music - hey, you’re making a free video available to guys like me - if you like to run the video with music, it’s your show! Anyway, I jotted down a couple of products you mentioned in the video - the Mr. Clean Magic Eraser & the Tesla masking tape. Hope to track them down here in Pittsburgh. So thanks for those tips. I will definitely check out your other videos. Thanks for making them available. EEB

      EEB Hello EEB, so glad you made it back to reply, I do appreciate the compliments. I do, really do enjoy constructive criticism. Please feel free to make any suggestions you like. Hey, EEB, do you have any pictures of video of the City Apartment Building on your layout? Would really like to see this, I dont know if I have ever seen it anywhere placed. Many of the buildings I put together, I have no idea if I will be able to use, they are really a simple pass time for me.

      Mike - I'd be happy to shoot you a few pics of the bldg. on the layout. Just not sure if I can do that through RUclips (I'm new to using this). I can attach the pics to an email - let me know how to send the pics to you. Thanks. Emmett

    • @ModelerManMike
      @ModelerManMike  10 лет назад

      EEB I dont have a RUclips email yet :( I am working on that though! I think if you have a smart phone, you can shoot video from that and upload it directly to your youtube channel. I think you might find some how-to's to do this. If you have a layout, would be cool to see some vid's of it to! If you build a lot you might find you enjoy sharing it! RUclips is free and its really kind of fun to play with as well. Hope you can figure this out, sure would like to see the apartment bldg!

      +djkulp1 Hello dj, thanks for the suggestion, I do appreciate it. I do enjoy making these free video's for people, they are fun to put together and many really enjoy them, maybe even as much as I enjoy putting them together. The thing is, half of the fun for me is making the video and adding the music and working the flow through all of the things I am doing, I really personally enjoy the music and it just makes me happy to hear all that stuff goin on. With all that said, I had one other mention the music, I find that some may not like it and can only say sorry to that and suggest many other RUclips Channels that have great build video's without music, if you do a search for "Model Railroad Structure" or "Model Railroad buildings" you can surely find some without music. Happy searching and happy building!
