The guard was actually asking about the brothers, Corsac and Fennec. When he heard that Fennec had died, he asked Corsac if it was 'worth it' i.e. worth losing his brother.
I think that Ilia shocking that guy wasn't even meant as a redemption action. It was just that she had still not clearly changed sides. That action clarified where she was now, not that she had been redeemed, but that she was ready to be redeemed.
I've seen too many people assume that the face-turn is when they get full redemption. No, redemption comes from all the effort achieved following the face-turn.
Ilia didn't just turn after it was 4 on 1.. she had been basically stun locked ever since Blake pinned her and talked to her instead of pressing her advantage. After that she was mostly passive. Kicking Blake off her (Then not following up, basically 'get off me and let me think') and only acted when Sun directly attacked her, and even then, barely defending herself. Even in mortal danger she wasn't able to think "I should move" she had to be told to.
Also I don't think it unimportant that the only verbal commands she responded to were the ones from Blake and her dad. She just looked confused at the brothers telling her to help them.
Also, i think that Ilia know that the Belladonnas did not need her help at the end. She did not attack the White Fang brother to prove a point to the others, it was important for her to prove the point to herself. Cutting her lose from the organisation for good.
@@Qrow-Samedi I also believe one like what was said earlier that she was in shock and needed to process things; especially the fact that despite everything she did Blake’s dad still saved her life. Which I think floored Illia more than anything. Someone who she considered enemies still endangered themselves to save her. That’s when she realized that Blake was one right, but two Blake was seriously about what she said.
The guard wasn't asking about any of his people, he was asking about the White Fang guys brother who died.
Glad you gave Ilia's VA props for this episode, Cherami Leigh is fantastic.
Why didn't I realize sooner she is fem V?! OMG!
Sun was the friend Blake deserved and this arc made him the friend she needed.
Yeah, too bad she was always with the hitting and slapping for comic relief.
Their chemistry was otherwise great.
He even took a bullet for her.
@@DocMicrowave I mean, he IS sun wu kong, the monkey king, he is a comic relief but with epic fight skills in the original tale
@@FarothFuin That is fair to say.
I’m not sure exactly what you guys are confused about when it comes to Scrolls (phones), but in Remnant, the Scrolls are holographic, which is why you can see the screen through both sides, so they aren’t holding it the wrong way.
9:20 "Many faunus are known to have nearly perfect sight in the dark"
Alternate line for Blake: "Humans didn't do this." (points at house) "I did this. Specifically, the fire." 😜
Also, cute puppy!
I love the version "Human didn't do this. We did. More specifically, me. I did this" 😂 (though to be fair she was surely referring to the attack and the whole ordeal in general)
"Humans didn't do this. I did this. I set my house on fire, and I will do the same to anyone that doesn't come help at Haven, dammit!"
LOL! Thank you!!!
There were a couple of illogical and nonsensical moves in the fight scenes of the last two chapters. Blake setting the house on fire just to shed some light on the situation was way overkill for drama. It's her house. She knows where the light switch is. She could have worked her way over to it. Though I guess if that alternative happened, we wouldn't get the dramatic scenes of Blake and Illa interacting with a huge but very stationary fire burning in the background.
There was also that scene last chapter where Blake freezes the Albain brothers weapons with a icy shadow clone. Then proceeds to pause and have a conversation with Sunn and her dad until they free themselves...
Unfortunately the fight scene illogic doesn't end there.
I did like this volume on review. But the fights.........
@@remusdovincescu7523 Hmm, well i suppose that could work better as incentive for recruitment. "Join us in our bid to save Haven. Or I burn your house down."
Probably would work better than walking around giving speeches.
"I'm still not over Pyrrha" man, I'm looking forward to them seeing Jaune next episode :)))))))))
FACTS!!!!
You sir are a Masochist….but I concur 😂
This episode was a highlight of the season. Fun fact, Ilia's allusion is Mowgli from the Jungle Book. It explains her human appearance in her community of animals/faunus. Also the story made an emphasis of fire being evil, and the Belladona house was set on fire.
Ah, didn't consider that...
Fun Facts
Fact 1: Blake mentions a ship captain that owes her a favor which is a callback to "Of Runaways and Stowaways", when she and Sun helped the Captain defeat the Sea Feilong.
Fact 2: Miles Luna clarified that the reason Blake couldn't see Ilia in the dark despite having night vision was because of her camouflage.
Fact 3: This episode marks the first time Sun has used the shotgun nunchuk form of Ruyi Bang and Jingu Bang since Volume 2. The original rig that Monty Oum built in Poser was difficult to animate - the fight in "Black and White" from Volume 1 reused a short animation he had made years before - and he had built a new rig post-Volume 2 for use in future fights which ultimately went unused following his death. In this episode they are animated using a new rig built by Kim Newman.
To see Sun fight is always a treat....but must be an animator's nightmare lol
it was so cool but yea i hope they got a bonus lol
My comment contains spoilers about this topic...
It was so annoying to the animator that they asked for permission to remove him from the next season, so they didn't have to do his fight scenes ever again.
@@stephenford5661Thaaaaat doesn't sound true lol
“Who are you trying to convince?” Damn Leo! Raven didn’t even have a response for that! Dude for a coward he also just dropped a sick diss track!
This is officially the episode where it felt like the fight scenes were getting back on track. Not Monty level obviously (no one can really do what Monty did) but between the camera work and just the general weight of each hit it felt a lot less floaty.
I also like that it was Ghira saving Ilia that was the final push she needed to start her redemption. Would I have liked more time for her to turn? Sure. But I also don’t entirely mind how they did it here.
I want to praise both Arryn Zach (Blake) and Cherami Leigh (Ilia) for their performances! So good. Again, Cherami does such a good job with the righteous anger.
The volume is much better than I remember, story wise.
However, those fights!! Visually the animation looks good. But the execution and choreo are far from Monty level. For one thing, those nonsensical pauses for dialog in the middle of action.
Like Blake freezing the Albain brothers weapons. Then pausing for dialog with Sunn and Ghira while they melt their way free.
Or Blake choosing to set the house fire as a heavy handed way of turning up the light just for dramatic background effect.
At least RT fixed the scene after the fact with Ghira telling Sunn to help Blake. This is the fixed version they are reacting to, where Sunn looks over and sees Blake on the floor and runs over to attack Illia. In the original RUclips version, Sunn looks over at Blake as she gets up and runs out of frame for some reason.
The fixed version made more sense logically.
There are a few other fight scenes in this volume that could use a rework as well, to get to near Monty level smoothness and flow.
To be fair, Ilia STOPPED attacking long before she 'switched'. She only fought Sun because he attacked her - her conscience was bothering her way before that, thanks to what Blake said.
And yes, Cherami Leigh (Ilia's VA) is amazing.
It's been bothering her the entire episode. A lot of people don't really connect this little detail but she wasn't actually participating in the attack at *all* until Blake accidently walked in on her hiding in an empty room. She then attacked Blake mostly because she felt she had to as a White Fang member for the same reasons she has said before. She won't be a bystander (at least not in front of people). She just gets progressively more and more unwilling to fight the people who clearly were there for her when they were still in the White Fang over the course of the entire episode. I actually really like that she doesn't take the "big moment" of turning the fight away from others. It feels more authentic that she was so indecisive that she couldn't act until it basically didnt matter anymore.
As someone else said in this comment section. She was doing it more to prove it to herself. That she *could* change sides. Because she just told Blake minutes ago that she didn't even realize she could at this point.
@@undeathghost5627 It's been bothering her ever since Corsac & Fennec told her the elder Belladonnas had to be "silenced". Her eyes went wide as saucer plates as she stammered "silenced?", taking in the full meaning. She had even naively hoped Sienna Khan would step aside for Adam the way Ghira had done for her....her face looked very troubled as she left the meeting...despite what she'd ostensibly agreed to. The visual storytelling does A LOT of the heavy lifting for Ilia's character development, for better or worse....and not everyone in FNDM picks up on it, alas.
@@JJR93 hard agree. This is true for the entire series. The more you rewatch the series the more you realize how much visual storytelling and foreshadowing is actually happening
@@undeathghost5627 And this also echoes what Ren's father had told _him_ as a child: "sometimes, the worst action to take is taking no action at all." It wasn't about the result, it was about making her choice _real_ through an action. She could _say_ she wanted to change sides all she wanted, but if she had never made that one final attack, even if it had no significant effect on the outcome of the actual fight, would *anyone* believe her? Either in-universe _or_ the audience? It would be a *much* harder sell, that's for sure.
People always bang on about "show don't tell, show don't tell, show don't tell". And yet, when they use things like this, *showing* her change of heart through what would otherwise be a token contribution to the fight, but has *personal* meaning for the character, or her emotional state during the encounter, the subtle nuance of not what is explicitly stated, but what is implied. The emotion in Ilia's voice when she's afraid no one was moved _enough_ by Blake's speech to *actually* stand up first and volunteer, and she would *actually* go off alone, and what would most certainly happen to her when she did. It drove her to action not for her self, but in spite of herself. For all her hesitancy, her confusion, her doubt, and most importantly, realizing how hypocritical she had been in criticizing Humans for standing by doing nothing while other Humans act in hateful ways, but then turning around and trying to get Faunus to do the _very same thing;_ she was realizing she was again on the verge of becoming the very thing she hated. She was going from someone who would betray herself and sacrifice even her own friends, do something her parents would have been ashamed of; to someone who "stands aside and lets the hate happen". So she had to speak up first, not as an act of redemption, not seeking forgiveness, not even really because she wanted to help them _win._ Ironically, it's just like she said, "You know what snuffs out hate? Fear." Fear of losing someone you care about. Fear of becoming someone her parents wouldn't even recognize. Fear of the shame and ridicule she was going to face just for offering to help. Fear of the guilt of all the bad choices she had made before. It overwhelmed the Hate; who has time to hate when you have all that to be worried about?
Also, it's very hard to forgive people that are not like you. The Faunus had trouble forgiving Humans for what had been done to them. But it was an easier step to manage to forgive _other Faunus._ That was something to start with.
HOW DID I NEVER KNOW THAT ILIA IS LUCY oh my god lol. Amazing
- Tch, at least Leo can admit his own cowardice. And that "Who are you trying to convince?" - made Raven flinch.
- Even with her better night vision, it's still hard for Blake to spot an all-black target in the dark without lighting contrast.
- Note that at the tail end of the house battle, Ilia was mostly left in her head - only acting when Sun attacked her, and only when Ghira told her to get out from the above floor before it could collapse fully.
- Tragic comeuppance for Corsac. Fennec was warier of Adam's instability, but he ended up being the casualty in the house battle.
- Blake does point out something that's quite relevant even today - about what could happen if groups allow their worst members to be the only voice the world gets to hear...
I don't think the focus of that battle was ever about Illia having an impact on the outcome. In my view, the focus was on the course of events leading up to Illia’s breaking point- which I have as Blake having her pinned down-, her processing that- while she was in the stunned fog during the climax of the fighting-, and her actions immediately following.
Sure, Illia whipping the last brother standing wasn't satisfying or impactful for the audience. That was the point. It wasn't supposed to be. The only person that needed to feel the weight of that action, was Illia herself.
The guard was asking about the other twin not another guard, because even though the twins showed themselves as enemies the guards knew the twins personally due to all of them being Faunus. Also Illia had to sort through her feelings. She felt like a spurned lover but after Blake and her dad saved her life and forgave her for everything she realized that her and Blake could be friends if she was willing to do that. So she made the choice to accept Blake’s offer of friendship.
The end of this episode again proves that Blake's story is before the rest of the group. Leo called the group for the next day, but Blake's father said the attack is 2 weeks away.
Indeed, Ghira's statement on timing of the White Fang attack was the first hard exposition that there are different timelines. It directly counters Watts statement on timing the attack.
Ahh Blake and Ilia two characters who have been through so much. As much as Blake has struggled I think the disconnect between her and Ilia is impactful because Blake has always had people who’ve unconditionally loved her, she’s always had people in her court. She can’t get through to ilia by saying that this is wrong because Blake doesn’t understand the loss as personally as Ilia but Ilia doesn’t understand Adam’s effect on Blake and what’s that’s done to her and why she had to leave just aghhh. When Blake left Adam’s faction I wonder if Ilia had anyone else when she was gone, anyone who would support her better nature…I don’t think she did. I’m surprised she didn’t resent her more.
The difference between Ghira and Adam is that Ghira doesn’t see strong Faunus and weak Faunus, he sees one people and was trying to protect them both, even when they came into his home to kill his family.
- the first ep of each Volume tends to be a cold opening. They don't show the opening song/credits until the end of those eps.
- 😆The Roosterteeth crew are good at anticipating audience questions at times.
- Kali is a badass mom. That tray is never gonna be the same again though. Of course, neither will Bat-boy's head. 😈
- Blake thinking: "Oh hell, I've gotta make a speech, don't I?"
- another reference to how Blake's storyline was happening ahead of the others'. Ghira says they have 2 weeks before things go down at Haven, while for Ruby and Co. it's only a day or two away.
- When the Guard captain asked about Fennic, that *was* the (flattened) White Fang leader he meant. He was asking because he saw the other one being brought out and presumably wanted to know if Fennic was still on the loose.
12:10 The only other time in the series (so far) when Sun's gunchucks don't crash the computer. 😁
Cats are like the number one predator of bats... so momma Kali got something for that flying rat, Yuma.
Ken is right. The guards were indeed asking about the other wolf brother. I think he's the only actual casualty.
There was one guard who got shot in the back, when Ghira went beast mode last episode.
Fox*
Fox brother. Their names, Corsec and Fennec, are actually 2 species of foxes.
Yes, yes... foxes. I always think wolf brothers because of all of the Jungle Books references... but it's foxes. And that guard that was killed... I'm pretty sure no one liked him anyway... so it's all good.
It might be my love for blunt force weapons, staves, and shotguns in games but i adore Sun's weapons and they are my handsdown my favorite in all of RWBY
I will never not love Kali dragging her prey back to her family to show them all proud; you go Kali, you go
When I played Cyberpunk 2077 and realized girl V is the voice actress for Ilia.
Blake has the best parents. Both are very caring, but in a pinch, mom can take out attackers with nothing but a serving tray and dad commands enough respect that the cops respond to something as little as a head nod.
"I don't know what else to do!"
That line has stayed with me since I first saw this episode back when it first came out. I don't know why it had such an impact on me, but it's the line that comes to mind when I think of RWBY. It did such an amazing job of summarizing Ilia's character.
She was shown, first hand, how broken the world was, how the way the Faunus were treated couldn't be allowed to continue. She'd seen that violence got results, so when the White fang came around, she probably lept at the chance. This was a way for her to help fix the world.
And it worked. For a while, it worked.
The trouble is, Ilia's not stupid. She could clearly see that the respect the Faunus were gaining was at the cost of making other people afraid. Ilia's a decent person at heart, she doesn't want ANYONE to live in fear, but she can't stop! She's trapped by her own desire to help the Faunus.
Because she can't leave things they way they were when she was a child, she has to do SOMETHING! She has to make it better!
And what she's doing isn't right, she knows it isn't right!
But she doesn't know what else to do.
Amazingly well executed moment. 11/10
It’s what made Ilia my favorite character in the franchise
@@pumpkinwarrior7138Plus she is voiced by Cherami Leigh who is extremely talented.
i like to think many quotes from this episode can be applied to our modern life. Oz talking about how a few people can cause harm, or blake's speech about how we can be our own worst enemy.
Blake may be part cat but you’re forgetting that Illia is a part chameleon, so Blake wouldn’t be able to see her.
But cat is way better
25:59 Yeah, Bethany is actually mistaken here. Finnick is the twin who died. Thats why the guard says to his brother "was it worth it?" As in "was it worth losing your brother?"
I dont get how you couldn't see the actual turmoil with Ilia. Trying to see things from other peoples perspectives instead of judging people flat out would open a better discussion
I love you 'Or just burn the house down.' Too funny.
The VA for Ilia is one of the handful of professional, established VAs they hired for this show, and Cherami Leigh was, imo, a great use of that budget. She does a lot of great subtlety with the character that I love.
While it didn't make much difference tonthe fight, it still took alot for her to finally stand against the ideals she had followed for so long, i see it more as a display of her conflictions coming to the surface rather than a contribution to the battle
The guard was asking about the twin brother not a friend of his. However with his outburst its not out of place or that he wasn't listening to Blake's speech. Its because what Blake was talking about wasn't forgiveness it was meerly pointing out that the faunus are just as capable of hatred and violence as the humans and that the faunus are also capable of inaction. There wasn't anything really to do with forgiveness, she hasn't forgiven Adam for what he has done, only that he needs to be stopped. Illia gets forgiven because while it seemed like a weak move coming in to take the last guy out when it was like 4 against 1, but with that one small gesture she choice to go against the people that have been conditioning her to believe what they were doing was necessary and just for months even years.
She looked lost but SHE chose, she could’ve done nothing let whatever could’ve happened happen, she could’ve still sided with Corsac and the battle could’ve continued.
But that one small action in the right direction showed Blake that Illia is still capable of good. That the good person is still in her.
The delivery of Illia's line for standing with Blake was very well done
By the way, I think Bat-guy that Blake's mom defeated is voiced by good old Nick Landis/Lanipator from Team Four Star and Dragonball Z Abridged.
This opening scene had me remembering Firefly....
"So, trap?"
"Trap."
I mean, while Ilia waiting until the last moment does seem a bit like she was jumping ship at the last minute, but you kinda need to bear in mind that she isn't driven by power, she's more driven by what she thinks is best for the faunus or whatever... So her switching sides is a sign of her being won over to their side of things, even if she was more of a negative impact overall in the fight... Of course she doesn't deserve praise for it, but I think you can forgive her and understand how hard it was for Ilia to change course from what she had been dedicated to for so many years... Well a few at least lol.
Ozpin and his inner circle are from Wizard of Oz. Ozpin is the Wizard, Glynda should be obvious, Ironwood is the Tin Woodsman, Leo the Cowardly Lion, Qrow the scarecrow.
the puppy chillin in ur arms sleeping lol
Such a cutie!
Fantastic discussion! Your thoughts on the whole thing between Blake, Ilia, Adam, and the White Fang is wonderful!
Ilia was the only one who had an easy, disabling shot due to being behind Corsac, being unexpected, and having electricity. No doubt the crew could have beaten Corsac, but it still would have been a fight. Ilia removed that conflict completely.
The pain of loosing Pyrrha never goes away
I always thought it was a bit sad that it was the brother who was expressing doubt about what Adam was doing who died, like, he clearly was questioning what was going on with Adam throwing a fit about the Belladona family, but lost his life in a moment of rage at seeing his brother knocked out. Honestly, that must make the other surviving brother feel pretty bad.
One of the finest written chapters!!! And I love your discussions after this one, guys. I felt so much of what you both felt thoughout this chapter. Especially Blake's speech!! As a person of color, I vibed with the plight of the Faunus and how many of them live with their world. Blake spoke from the heart of many tired souls, wishing for a better way. I felt that......in a real world way. Hate is easy...... You're right about that, Beth. We all need to be reminded of that and try to do the hard work to unity, fr...... Sorry for getting too deep there.
Meanwhile, Qrow & company is looking at an obvious trap and they know it. Time is coming for a conflict of dangerous proportions!! These last chapters will be very telling. I can't for you to see them, guys...... Til then, STAY GOLDEN!! 🫡🌹❄️🖤🔥
chapter 11 and 13 are so crazy.

i look forward to seeing these two cry in the upcoming episodes, and remaining seasons
They were asking about Fennec after Corsac had been handed over.
I really love ilias va especially as lucy from fairy tail she is really good at making her voice feel with different emotions that make you feel for every character she plays it seems like. Awesome episode and reaction, blakes speech i always did like it, everyone always points out the whole black out scene where all you can see is ilias eyes, i feel like even if blake sees in the dark she still wouldnt be able to see her shes blended in with the dark room since shes a cameleon and a ninja--and i just realized her and blake are so similar because i kinda consider blake a ninja cat, and i think sun also called ilia a freaking ninja lol their weapons are different but i also feel like they are similar to they both stretch out and can grab hold of things when they are attacking or grabbing people to pull them around.
Great reaction been alittle sick so i didn't watch it until now but i cant wait for next episode. 🌹❤
Ilia is voiced by one of the best English VAs around.
And this is how Blake becomes the heroine of the faunus
This would have been the perfect time for Ruby to ask Ozpin how to use her silver eyes, but nope, let's make a joke instead. The scrolls have transparent screens. They finally figured out how to animate Sun's gunchucks in the new engine for this episode. Now that Blake's arc is complete, they have two weeks to get back in sync with the others, who only have two days... the first season of The Witcher handled the time disparity better, but you had to be paying attention to catch it.
13:50 i loved that scream so much idk why
Chapter 1 is always a cold open.
Kali Belladonna: Master of Tea Tray Fu!
Blake's speech here has rung with me since the first time I heard it. The one issue I have with it is the part where she says "By staying silent and doing nothing we let others speak and act in our place, and if we don't like their choices then we have no one to blame but ourselves."
The first part is excellent, for better and for worse, people judge groups as a whole, and thiar groups are formed in the head of the person making those judgements, not by agreement of the people in that grotto. We have no ability to choose what categories others put us in, and it's incredibly difficult to influence those choices too. I can say I'm not part of a group until my tongue shrivels up, and to most people out still have no impact.
The second part is where I have problems. Yes, if you do nothing, others act in your place, but you're not responsible for their actions, you're not to blame for them. Acknowledge that others will associate you with those actions, but under no circumstances accept that on yourself. If you want to do something about it great, but you are nou responsible, you are not to blame, and making yourself feel like you are is not healthy or helpful.
And that's Blake's future growth/arc showing~~ Foreshadowing!
6:10
Well he is the cowardly Lion
Way to miss the point of illia's struggle. Her change had absolutely NOTHING to do with the tide of the fight and everything to do with Blake's dad saving her. Wow that is the worst take I've seen you two take.
To be fair. They're expressing more that it would have had more impact (in their opinion) if it had *turned the fight* when she made that shift. You're 100% right that Ghira saving her life is what finally pushed her to make the choice. They are just saying it would have felt better if her actual switch had "mattered" for the fight more in their opinion. I did not get the impression they were trying to say Ilya only switched sides because of them losing. They were just making fun of the fact that she switched sides when it "didn't matter", ya know?
That being said my personal opinion is that I think it's better the way it was done. I like that Ilya's turn didn't make them win. It was nice to have the "good" team (for lack of a better word) just be stronger than the villains in this fight.
@@undeathghost5627 No, they are just super judgemental in a simple brain way. I've seen it in the past when I stopped watching their content. They don't seem to understand subtlety much at all and are VERY black/white to an obnoxious degree. On top of that they can't seem to remember the discussion Blake had with Sun earlier in the season, so it's not surprising at all this is their reaction. Clearly me giving them a second chance as reaction people wasn't the right idea and I should have just completely removed them from watching at all, which is what I'm going to do now. They aren't worth it.
@@undeathghost5627 That is just revisionist from what they said at the time.
Again it misses the point of her struggle, and what made her change. Why doesn't it have to matter to the fight to be worthy? That is bs.
@@cliveklg7739 Because honestly the story should rightfully be less focused on specifically Ilya and more on the Faunus as a whole. She is the prime example (as showcased by her being the first to agree and the most obviously needing to act differently) but all of the Faunus need to see her change not just Blake and the Belladonna's. Blake already had faith in her change. Ilya needed to prove it to herself and to the rest of the Faunus. So by having the moment be *in front of everyone* with her electing to put her life on the line with Blake at Haven instead of just attacking some dudes in the house it means more for the general message of the arc.
That's my take at least
Not that I want to be the spoiler of it all, although stuff has happened. The Jaw dropping stuff is just about to. Spoil not spoil, am with you two for this. :)
Have you guys watched the Justice League/ RWBY crossover? It was pretty good. I wasn’t into the show but I might try and find it now.
I would hope not considering it'd be a pretty big spoiler at this point in the series
They should wait until they're caught up with Volume 9 before watching those movies. Or at least finish Volume 7 before watching the first one.
Well the tides completely turned and my side lost completely so I guess I'll have my attack of conscience now 😂😂
I love illia though
Ill just go ahead and say it because im pretty sure it doesnt come up again, but dad is fine :)
i think they were just showing it off because:
1. He's the big tank badass and,
2. It is a nice visual when hes carrying the body of his enemies and friends alike. It all connects to the themes of forgiveness nicely because even though they hurt him, he chose to save Illya and carry the body of his enemy, he helped set the example that inspired Blake to give her speech on forgiveness being the right path.
Also the guard was definitely asking about the other evil twin that got crushed
He was Asking about the Twin, Which is Why His NExt lIne was. Was it Worth It. Indicating Was it Worth your Brothers Life.
I absolutely love what you said about hatred and it being easy to give in and feed off of that emotion with others. You did a great job explaining how it may feel good, but it’ll feel even better to forgive and go against that hatred in the end.
not a guard, Police chief
hes found an exceptional wife.
I adore Ilia as a character, but GOD they really needed more time to actually develop her and give her the nuance needed for her switching sides to really stick the landing.

I absolutely loved your commentary after the episode! I always look forward to what you guys have to say because it's always so insightful and deep, and this didn't disappoint. You made a couple connections that I hadn't thought about regarding Blake's speech. You ended up highlighting the thematic elements that are so relevant to our 2023 culture.
I've been waiting on yall to upload this 😃
I look forward to the next one. But, I have a question have you heard of RWBY Chibi? If not you might want to look it up. I won't spoil what it is about.
Yes it would be a shame if they missed such a funny Show!
@@tatsumigakill7347 nothing bad ever happened. evvvvvverrrrrrrr.
@@zerodawn09 so you want to go do some more comedy Segments?
@@tatsumigakill7347 That sounds splendid!
One of my all-time favorite episodes of the series. May be controversial, but I absolutely LOVE this episode.
I do like Ilia but she does flip a bit too quickly. Like there were hints of regret but I think there could have been a bit more of her questioning orders and maybe repenting before becoming an ally. Because like she literally just orchestrated an attack on the leader of the whole Island and everyone’s just okay with it. Like I think being more suspicious of her and then letting ilias actions do the talking going forward
I think she did the writers just heavily condensed it
1) Her tear-filled "I didn't know what else to do" tells us she couldn't follow her parents' example because she's not sure how they'd have handled it.
Makes sense. They probably rarely dealt with it being chameleon faunus they probably expertly passed as human and like in her song "Smile" they encourage her to do the same
2) Her attacking Corsec to protect the Belladonnas was to show her conviction in Adam's cause was wavering
She realizes she might've been wrong blindly following Adam in her grief justifying it with her parents untimely death
The humans in charge (for the most part it seems) don't give a damn about faunus. They won't even lift a finger to help an orphaned faunus
She uses that and her parents' death to justify following him and only now she sees he is going down a path that'll only end bad for all faunus
3) Her wanting to join in after Blake's brilliant speech shows her wanting to be on the right side of the fight .
She realizes Blake is right. If they let Adam speak for them as a species but they end up regretting it.
They'll be hated as tyrants like he would by humans even when they just want peace and equality not domination and fear.
Also... she's not exactly a character we're going to have on screen a ton after this so they need to leave her off in a place that makes sense. They do a good job of making it feel like she at least deserves to be on their side. They also do a good job of making it clear that she hasn't "repented" for her failures.
Or at least that's my opinion.
@@undeathghost5627 yeah she seems like she's confused and terrified and understandably so
Raven is so right about queen salem, but nobody is listening to her, not even the audience
She is part right. But we know from an outside narrative perspective that she is also wrong… I’ve never hated Raven; and even understood her decisions even when I disagree.
They dont have a clue what there up against, only ozpin does. Raven clearly knows more than she should, it going to be interesting to see how raven learnt of salem.
@jimfox1477 well my theory..there was only 2 left..
@@emanymton713I've never hated Raven either and I can understand her decisions too. Imagine knowing that a being like salem exist, put yourself in Raven shoes, thats crazy. Salem is the last person on remnent I would want after me, she is terrifying once you know the truth.
"Queen/goddess salem" yeah right calm down Tyrian.
As a person that has done terrible things in the past ive learned staying angry at people wont change anything untill you forgive yourself
A favorite fan theory is that Glynda Goodwitch is the relic of choice.
Love you guys
Yayy :)
Things are so polarized nowadays, it's hard to remember that _"They've gone too far and have to be PUNISHED"_ isn't supposed to be a blanket statement. It's a matter of degrees. I am not a forgiving man in those circumstances, and never will be. But even I have to say, the message of this episode is _right._ It's true. If they've crossed the final line, there _is_ no forgiveness. Like Adam. But for the rest? If there's a chance for redemption, or even just penance, there's a chance for forgiveness.
But just because it takes strength to make that choice, does not make it right all the time. We forget that too.
In reality it's never to forgive.....but depends on person to person if they deserve it.....Ilia kinda deserves it.... Adam and cinder?.....hell no
Volume 1: faunus have near perfect vision in the dark, Blake is a ninja.
Volume 5: Blake can't see someone standing against a wall.
Blake can't see someone the same color as the wall. I agree there are issues with Blake not seeing her that close looking right at her, but lets be clear that she can blend in with backgrounds so it makes some sense that when Ilia moves quickly and there's more distance it might be a bit difficult to follow.
Because RWBY's writing flies by the seat of it's enormous clown pants.
@@nathanielreik6617 assuming faunus can see at least as well as a house cat in the dark, there's no way she wouldn't see her.
But tbh it's never once come up in the entire show, so it's possible they just decided to drop it.
Why does nobody seem to understand the whole point of being a Chameleon. Ilia's whole thing that has been present in almost every scene shes presented in is that she *blends into her surroundings* with her chameleon traits. She turns the lights off because she wants it to be less diverse coloring. Not because she thinks Blake can't see in the Dark. Blake sets fire to the house because fire isn't consistent ambient light. It moves and changes a lot. It would be impossible to blend into it. Ontop of the fact it would cast shadows onto a humanoid shape and make her easier to spot in that regard as well. Like these decisions make perfect sense if you just think about it. Blake has never failed to see anyone else in the entire show in the dark that wasn't super far away from her or hidden.
@@graveyardshift2100 I mean real cats can't see color very well in the dark so Ilia's dark clothing and using her chameleon color changing to black against dark walls with no light and thus no shadows maybe that's the explanation. As I said, she definitely should've seen her at the beginning but who knows. Maybe you're right that they decided to drop the night vision.
Hella XD
Ruby is so timid and respectful when asking her questions this episode, and Qrow and Oz definitely treat her as a young student rather than the bold leader of the main-characters team. I understand what the writers were thinking, but it feels more than a bit jarring.
To be honest, Blake's speech rubs me the wrong way. She spent the fight convincing Ilia that "there's always another path", and then she tells the crowd, "yeah I don't have _shit_ for solving this problem". Adam's ideas are obviously shitty (what did the Fall of Beacon do for Faunus, anything?), but does Blake have any actual ideas for how to make actionable steps toward Faunus equality? Here she says that she doesn't. All her plans amount to damage control for Adam making everything worse, not actually making anything better.
"You are looking for a simple solution to a very complicated problem." You are exactly the person she's talking about. She's not in a position to make changes BECAUSE she needs to do damage control. If you are programming something, and someone puts in bad code, you don't fix it by just adding more code; you first have to undo the bad code before you can even try to make any progress.
They could really do better with the writing if they paid better money to the writers honesty. Iliya felt like a game boss and a broken record.
You guys assume way too fast
