One cool thing that is easy to miss: when Hazel says "this is your business, not mine", it's a callback and quote from back when Adam killed Sierra. Back then, Hazel complained he didn't approve the murder and Adan replied "this is my business not yours"
One detail I love is when Raven's blade breaks they make sure to animate her grabbing a new one from her scabbard.
SAME
I just can't stop watching her grab new blades. Also, who needs that many chances lol. It's kinda symbolic, your weapons being disposable and fragile but having so many it doesn't matter.
@@arcadius2569the blades are also dust infused
I also love how they even switch weapons at one point but keep on fighting, Raven with Cinder's glass scimitar and Cinder with Raven's katana.
Yeah and similar with Cinder forming new blades (which are also usually somewhat different in style.
I love that that you can tell the difference in experience (with fighting in general and the Maiden powers) between Cinder and Raven. Cinder uses her powers a lot, frequently creating new weapons (instead of using her original weapons that she tossed aside back in 3x07), and even summoning that huge fire sword seems to require a lot of energy and big gestures. Raven, on the other hand, has her real sword. And while the dust sheathes do keep breaking she still has the base so she doesn’t have to waste energy. Then when she creates the ice sword it’s the smooth graceful movement. Honestly for most of the fight Raven seems to have the advantage.
Oh my god Team RWBY finally all back in the same location! Yes!
Blake really walked into a room full of people during a chaotic situation and went “Yang?” And Yang’s big wide eyed look?! Ugh. So close to that reunion! Dang it!
Don't worry next episode next episode
Raven is very much a prepper. Next episode will show a bit more of her inner workings... especially since it's an encounter with her daughter
To be fair, they were fairly evenly matched until Vernal distracted Cinder, also Cinder doesn't use any weapons of her own anymore. Hasn't since she got half the maiden powers.
@@DarthDragon007 That's what I said, she discarded her weapons back in 3x07.
I love how Samantha Ireland does Nora's scream. The high pitched shriek of pain growing into a full throated growl of rage.
Oh dear, Hazel, what have you wrought?
I fully agree her acting is fabulous!
She can really knock it out of the park with the yells/screams, especially the moment-that-shall-not-be-named in Volume 8(?) with the door.
@@knightmare3197 agreed *barely contained excitement* I so can't wait for them to get there!
Maiden powers do transfer to the last person in their thoughts as long as that person is a candidate to receive the powers.
It's not so much that Yang took a long time to reach the vault as we were seeing the Raven/Cinder fight simultaneous to some of the other fighting. That, or the maidens are extremely quick. They were fighting on falling rock after all, but that may have just been for the style points and the coolness factor.
Speaking of style points, yes Weiss has all of them this episode. I love how she looks after pulling Hazel back into the room.
I just LOVE Weiss's sheer amount of stylishness she has
and good thing is Weiss' style points just increases further down the line
@@Llightmare correct
Gotta remember that every battle animation in RWBY is slowed down massively. In the first three seasons we see bits and pieces of the characters actual speed, Cinder and Raven (especially Raven) are in the top tier of fighters in verse, so yes, they are very slowed down.
One of my favourite tidbits is the VA for Adam said a lot of his research is looking up interviews with people convicted for domestic abuse or worse and emulating that kind of tone.
It also ended up making him horrendously sick after each recording session.
Cinder really did “fall”🤭
bada boom!
"Cinder Bawls"
"Cinder Crawls"
Cinder got a bit too overconfident after tormenting teenagers and murdering civilians. The moment she goes up against a more experienced fighter and someone else with maiden powers she gets her ass completely handed to her. Love to see it!
I don’t know, Raven’s aura was low and if Vernal hadn’t been there, Raven probably could have still lost… It was pretty close, I think… In a straight one on one fight, I think it could have gone either way, although I might still slightly lean towards Raven… Cinder is a beast though… Quite literally now… At least partially lol.
This said, Raven could potentially escape through a portal and regroup as long as she had enough aura left.
@@KitsyXthere’s no contest raven would have beat cinder regardless of vernal, you can see when they stop fighting while ravens aura flickers just like cinders, raven doesn’t seem tired at all and could stand to go a few more rounds, cinder was almost completely spent energy wise, I’ve always seen this as a difference between raven, who doesn’t use her aura as a crutch and cinder who does
@@KitsyX Nope. Cinder was on her knees and was running on fumes by the time Vernal intervened. Vernal's presence sped up the inevitable. Cinder was outclassed in experience and level-headedness by Raven. The only real advantage Cinder had during the fight was when she pulled out her grimm powers and even that was a severe detriment that Raven eventually could and would exploit. Above everything else, Cinder's own inflated ego led her to keep fighting a battle that was too far against her favor, preventing her from falling back and rethinking even a little bit of what she should do next.
I think it was a lot of little things that aligned perfectly. I mean, Cinder killed Ozpin. It seems that in a tough fight when she needs to go all out or lose, she can do a lot of damage.
I love the fight scene with Raven and Cinder. Raven especially because we get to see her weapon “Omen” in action. All the blades she uses are different elemental dust crystals made into blades for the hilt of the sword. All those blades are only temporary and held within the revolver that she’s both the hilt and blade. Honestly one of my favorite weapons because of the concept
Small detail, but when Raven smacks Cinder in the face to push her off the platform, it shatters the mask Cinder's been wearing under her bangs (that Jaune damaged slightly) and we can see for just a second the aftermath of what Ruby's silver eyed blast did to her in Volume 3. Presumably the Maiden Power protected the other eye.
I do like that Hazel is just an unstoppable force WHEN his aura is up. Most huntsmen/huntresses still feel pain when their aura is up, but they won't get physically injured until their aura's energy runs out. Hazel's semblance make him immune even to the pain that most other aura-empowered people have to deal with. I like sheer will and tenacity style characters, so it just clicks for me.
Fight of the volume right there.
"It's my aura. Pyrrha said I have a lot of it."
And that's why Jaune is the slapstick character. He can take it.
Remember, Jaune isn’t a healer - he’s an aura-amplifier ✨
20:42 you are correct Ken it is the person who was in their final thoughts
And the winner is, RAVEN! By a knockout.
All I can say about Cinder is, she had it coming.
Playing with her food always screws her up.
Yeah, but won’t lie. Cinder’s become a Shadow of her former self after Ruby Displayed her “Silver Eyes” and completely screwed her up on the confidence side.
@@danielramsey6141 Fully agree. Prior to her (1st) bout with SE, Cinder certainly seemed to be a force to reckon with. Working behind the scenes, causing mayhem, sabotage, inciting decent, corruption, etc. One truly felt she was extremely dangerous.
Now she's just this entitled brat with with delusions of grandeur who thinks no one is as strong as she.
She doesn't follow orders, makes her own plans usually based on, as Watts puts it, her grudge against a child. Plans which usually end in a fail because she likes to play with her food. (Likes to take time to gloat.)
She could have killed Raven on the spot as she had the drop on her in the previous episode. Instead she saved her to likely do a Pyrrah on her after she got got the maiden and relic.
Like you said, she is a shadow of what she once was. More of a joke now. An annoying one.
Hi guys, remember that there is one last character short before seeing volume 6, after that there is nothing new between the next volumes
So Cinder’s “look who’s talking” to Raven calling her a monster strongly implies that Cinder at least believes Raven killed the previous Maiden for her power.
And yes, since we have Cinder and Raven as Maidens now, there’s a clear path to Ruby and Yang at least gaining the power later (though I personally hope they don’t go the RWBY Maidens route).
I believe they've said that the main four will never become maidens, of course plans can change but I hope they stick to that.
Agreed, Ruby and Yang have clear paths to maidenhood.
And yeah, I had always hoped they would not go that route.
I believe the question was asked many years ago of CRWBY, if team RWBY were destined to become maidens. The answer I believe was no.
Of course that was a long time ago during V2 or V3. Things change.
@@DocMicrowave I could just about stomach it if it happens a couple of episodes from the end, and releasing Ozpin’s curse also takes the maiden powers away.
@@Andrew1990M Heh, I had a theory a few years ago that CRWBY might use as a loophole to RWBY becoming maidens.
They would all briefly get the powers. Then they'd give it all back to Oz somehow so that he could fight Salem.
Thus keeping (sorta) to their earlier assertion that RWBY won't end up being maidens. Which is hard to ignore given all the name play and relationships between the characters.
However, the more I thought about it, the more ridiculous the theory sounded. There is no way I can see reasonably explaining all of Team RWBY getting the powers at the same time. And they would have to get the powers around the same time for any of that to work. Else it would lead to even more oddball story telling.
So yeah, do know what their final plan was for that scenario. I am leaning towards no maidenship for the girls. It would complicate things.
@@Andrew1990M "Clear path" is a very generous description. It's a possibility, for sure, but calling it a "clear path" holds a loooot of supposition.
One small clarification, the first candidate for the maiden powers to transfer to is "the person in their thoughts last" so long as they are a young woman (clarified to be 30 years old or younger by the writers in a Reddit AMA) and if the first candidate does not qualify then it goes to someone random that does qualify
Nora switches up her tactics against Hazel. Instead of proactively taking swings at him, she hangs back and lets him charge like an oversized baseball then hits a home run, haha.
This episode marks the first time that our cast has ever done the normal thing and CALLED THE POLICE when things kick off.
Now THIS is where I say
This is one of the best battles ever in RWBY!!
Loved your reactions!!❤❤❤❤
I love this fight. Cinder is strong and skilled, but Raven absolutely flexes her experience here.
That makes it all the more impressive that Cinder can fight on the same level despite being half Raven’s age and with several disabilities including a missing eye, arm, and scar tissue. Also, Cinder by this point has only a few months at most experience with the Maiden powers, whereas Raven has had over a *_decade._* and despite that incredible disadvantage, Cinder is still on the same level. Imagine how much more formidable Cinder would be if she was never injured in the first place, or finds a way to heal her injuries in the future.
Isn't it crazy, all that power and Raven is still so afraid. It's the typical villain route, they're so afraid of defeat that they amass power and destroy competitors. Except Raven is too scared to have enemies, so she amasses power in solitude. Her tribe attacks undefended towns, but lives in tents in the wild and fears the Grimm. She (imo) won considerably easily against Cinder but her only ambition is to lay low and survive. I find her character so interesting because her fear makes her do things I can't understand. Raven could never be a hero, and wouldn't dare become a villain, because it just draws too much attention.
Raven is literally unlimited bladeworks
MAIDENBOWL! This is our first true look at just where the power ceiling really is in this world. We caught a glimpse when Cinder fought Ozpin, but we cut away from that fight before we saw much.
7:59 Remember that's what Adam said to Hazel after killing Sienna? Now Hazel is throwing that line back at him, but with extra shade.
The Raven vs Cinder fight is the absolute highlight of this volume. Some of the other fights are kinda wonky and the pacing is weird at times, but this was the first time we got close to that old Monty-esque style since his passing. To whit; some things to point out about the fight itself;
The animators actually took the time to show Ravens blades shattering (she uses disposable dust blades of different elements) and her replacing the hilt and drawing a new one from the sheath. It happens each time the blades shatter but it's so quick you can barely see it without slowing it down. Same for when they both swap weapons mid fight, Raven actually recovers her hilt barely a second later. It's hard to pick it out but it's in there.
You can clearly see the difference in skill and power level between Cinder and Raven here. Raven is both older, has been raised by bandits in the wild, *and* has Huntress training at the academy, and she shows off all that here, relying on pure sword skill through much of the fight. She's constantly aware of her surroundings, and immediately picks up on things that Cinder ignores, such as the falling rocks, that Vernal is still alive and points out Cinders lack of protective aura on her Grimm arm, an obvious weakspot she can exploit. She also constantly tries to move and attack from Cinders blindside.
On the maiden powers side of things, we know Cinder hasn't had the full power for anywhere near as long as Raven has (it's still less than a year since Beacon fell, and she only had the partial power before that) and while we don't know for certain how long Raven has had the power, it's presumably much longer. Cinder struggles to summon the fire sword, whilst Raven summons an even larger ice blade with ease. Raven is also able to leap to the falling rocks in a single motion, but Cinder requires sustained fire output to reach her. Cinder is also constantly using her semblance to create new weapons to fight with too, whereas Ravens semblance and bird magics can't really help her in a fight much, so she's used to relying on pure skill and the occasional bit of Maiden power, which since she tries to keep it secret, is something she probably doesn't typically break out unless she knows she's not leaving any survivors.
All in all, Raven is at the absolute peak of her ability here and utterly schools Cinder at every turn. Aside from Salem herself, whom Raven is obviously scared of, Raven is absolutely the most powerful and skilled warrior in the show at this point, and it shows.
Outstanding breakdown of Raven!! Which adds to how we see her from here onward. Tie was right in how complex Raven is...... On many levels.
If I'm not mistaken they had some new people doing that fight sequence and it was so good they kept them onboard for at least the next season.
“I don’t need him to hurt. I just need him to Go Down!!” Nora is so amazing😂
Also note on Jaune’s semblance: he said “no, I don’t think I’m healing her. our aura heals us. I feel like I’m using my aura to amplify her’s.” Without spoiling too much, he’s much more than a healer, and I can’t wait for you to find out and see what all he can do in the future!
Well, the scene was meant to clarify what he was doing. He wasn't healing (not a healer). He can boost the aura of another person.
I have to admit I like the subtle indication of power scaling. Cinder, a relatively new Maiden, contorts and strains to make her giant phallic symb-I mean sword. Raven, who has had some years to practise and hone her powers, barely has to TRY to make hers.
I love Hazel, but he needed that tough "boop" to the stomach from Nora.
And then the piercing from Weiss.
Man is an absolute tank! I don't think most other characters would still be able to stand after taking a direct hit from supercharged Nora, let alone get up immediately to go fight
Been loving the reactions!
To clarify on the transfer of maiden powers, they transfer to the last person the maiden thinks of as they die, the power will go to them if they can acceept.
If the maiden's last thought is of one that cannot accept the power it goes out into the world and finds a proper host (at random if memory serves). Like how Ozpin found himself bound with Oscar. Hope this helps!
Like if the maiden's last thoughts were of an old woman or a guy.
This episode saved this volume. Great moments all around and should have been the real finale. Raven vs Cinder remains my favorite Cinder fight 🔥!
Also Nora remains one of the best characters ⚡️💖
The volume on rewatch was not as bad as remembered. There were quite a few high points. But the ending arc was very unsatisfying to me. All due to the fight scenes.
Raven v Cinder was indeed the best though and saved this episode.
Favorite Cinder fight? Don't know as I agree, but it's definitely a great one.
@@jean-paulaudette9246 I don't think there is a favorite Cinder fight that i can remember.
Hazel's ability to not feel pain was more about being able to use a LOT of dust by stabbing it into his body for strong attacks then his ability to stay up in a fight. After for those who know how to project an aura the aura determines how much of a beating they can take as it stops your bones from breaking in the first place.
Fun Facts
Fact 1: The title of the episode could be a pun on Cinder's defeat.
Fact 2: Hazel's line to Adam, "This... is your business, not mine." is a callback to Adam stating a similar line to Hazel after killing Sienna Khan in "Dread in the Air".
Fact 3: The giant elemental blades used during Cinder and Raven's fight were inspired by "Final Fantasy"
Fact 4: In the complete version of Volume 5, a few details in this episode were polished.
Multiple times when the camera is focused outside, the fighting inside the building was added when it wasn't there before.
When Cinder first flies up to the falling rocks during her fight with Raven, rather than remaining still while elevating in the original, movement was added to it in the complete version.
Next will be this volumes finale, where most of your questions will be answered.
Hazel was still amped by dust so his power and durability increased as well
😎👍🙂
Someone else said this when this first came our, but I love how the show the progression of Cinder realizing how much more skilled Raven is than she is. At first she's confident, but she quickly begins loosing it. You see it in her eyes, it's like she can't believe that Raven just won't stay down, so she brings out a second blade and it still isn't good enough.
this is by FAR my favorite fight scene post monty era
i was so hype when cinder fell down there because god i hate her with a burning passion
also the song "all things must die" is so fitting here
Raven is Qrow's twin. Even if she was the person in Cinder's final thoughts Raven probably falls under the "some old hag" exception as Qrow put it. In that case the power would go to someone random, or possibly to whoever was in Amber's final thoughts as Raven stole it in a fashion never seen before, so the rules are kinda unknown.
This whole chapter brought the volume together!!! And Raven vs Cinder is in my top Five battles in the series!! The 'First known' Battle of Maidens.... It was done with the epicness it richly deserved!!!
But, I noticed one thing...... When Cinder had Raven with her Grim hand around her throat, she took some of Raven's power!!! (Remember, the only way she could get Amber's powers before, it was with a glove from Salem....) Just a lil' something I saw that was shocking to me.
So, one chapter left. And yeah...... It's one that will leave you pretty moved. Til then, gave a safe HAPPY NEW YEAR & STAY GOLDEN!! 😎🥂🌹❄️🖤🔥
The next episode contains maybe my favorite moment in all of RWBY.
They do make sure to note that if Hazel were to receive enough damage he would be unable to keep fighting regardless of the lack of pain, but usually in a fight pain can be something that slows us down so it can be useful. I mean just look at when Nora sent him flying out the main door. A normal person would probably take a bit to get back up, but since Hazel doesn't feel the pain he just stands right up and his voice shows no strain whatsoever.
At this point the way I see it Cinder has 3 Maiden Power inheritor candidates. Raven: killer and last interaction. Ruby: Obsessed with killing her. Emerald: Apprentice the one she could hope to show up to help.
Personally, I feel Cinder is so egocentric and bitter. If she had the capacity to think of someone specifically to inherit the maiden powers, she would think of someone decidedly unable to, just as a f*** you to the world.
What a memorable fight!
You two should check out the Project Shadow fanfilm by JoaoFilipeSantiago, to gear up for the third movie and get more acquainted with SA2's lore. (Not to mention it just being an amazing, emotional, well-made short movie!)
- Yup, Jaune's semblance lets him supercharge other people's auras with his. Here it lets Weiss' aura heal her really fast, but in future volumes he uses it for a few other tricks as well.
- Guess what Fangies, you're surrounded and heavily outnumbered, and mostly by other Faunus, not Humans. Are you _sure_ you want to fight?😈
- and here we have the White Fang realizing just how nuts Adam is.
- Weiss has a new toy 😄
- that 'plant sword into the ground to change momentum' trick Raven uses is similar to a move Qrow used while fighting Tyrian.
- yeah, you can't fault Vernal's loyalty. 🙁To bad that loyalty was given to some so undeserving.
- Yeah, Hazel's Semblance would be far less useful to someone with less aura or size, since it would be far easier to break bones, but as Ozpin said, it's what lets him inject dust directly into himself without collapsing in agony from the power coursing through him.
- The Maiden power goes to whoever is in the Maiden's thoughts as they die, _if_ that person is female and in the right age range. Of course I doubt there's been many times where 2 Maidens fought to the death before. Maybe if the target is already a Maiden it counts as 'invalid selection' and randomizes like if the Maiden had been thinking of a male at the time.
Raven vs Cinder is one of my favorite fights in the series. Also, to clarify, Raven is too old to receive more maiden powers. The cutoff age is 30.
Jaunes not a healer, hes a battery-amplifier
Since you also do reactions to Death Battles,
1) Remember that location where Raven and Cinder are going at it. You'll see it (unless you already reacted to Heihachi vs Geese).
2) If I'm not mistaken, it's after this volume (but I could be wrong and it could be after next volume) that you can watch Weiss vs Mitsuru without spoilers.
waiting for this video every weekend. Love you guys
A number of people in the FNDM don’t care for Volume 5 as much as others. They’re allowed their opinions, but frankly, I like how, as you can see here, it finally gives the good guys a much-needed win after all the crap they’ve gone through. Plus, the Duel of the Maidens is easily one of the most hyped moments in the series, and one of the best fights.
This was Hella, absolutely can't wait for the next one XD
I'm fairly certain it might be mentioned vaguely, I don't remember. But Raven killed the previous Spring Maiden because Raven thought the girl as weak. Raven is very much a strong live, weak die person.
The reunion that took far to long to happen. V5 ain't great but this ep makes a lot if it worth sitting through. This fight is only surpassed in V8, in my opinion
the person in their last thoughts needs to be a young woman. Raven is not a young woman so she wouldn't receive the powers so the powers would go to random person if Raven was in Cinder's last thoughts. Raven likely got her powers a while ago while she was still fitting that requirement.
Raven vs Cinder, the fight that took the volumes animation budget. lol
Jokes aside, that was a really fun fight.
Ah... Spoiler....
Yang is no pushover, however many fists she left behind.
No spoilers, but I can't wait until next season.. not sure of episode number, but think the episode was called "the coming storm" favorite first like 5 minutes of any season for me.
Definitely one of the best fights out of all of RWBY!!!!🎉🎉🎉🎉.
Adam is such a Kylo Ren.
i don't believe it is possible for a person to have 2 maiden powers, cinder is unique in that aspect because she can absorb the power with her grimm arm
Happy freaking new year🎉
Yes! Team Rwby's return! And now we see Adam's true self. Nothing without the charisma, just a boy with bloody hands. I cannot stand him even a little xD
The Maiden vs. Maiden fight reportedly sucked up a lot of the animation budget for RWBY5, as did the "character shorts" that preceded the volume....they had to take shortcuts elsewhere and it shows, particularly in some of the choices made in the next episode, IMHO.
So there were a lot of animation problems for this season in general, but there's so much in that "I'm not mad, I'm disappointed" look she's already giving Raven.
5:25 is such a funny moment cause Adam stops everything just for him to laugh dramatically
"Wait, i must laugh"
What happened to the death battle reaction?
Oh man we're here!!!
I still think this is the best battle of all rwby
Did you guys drop SAO Abridged? 😭
They kept getting blasted with copyright claims so it's Patreon only.
This fight is going to be golden Raven versus cinder Rwby You Lovely couple are going to love it
Ah yes the episode where 2 of my most hated characters duke it out
Dx yall gonna have to start doing 2 episodes together cuz this is a long anime, im gonna go gray hair and prolly die before yall finish Dx
I don't get why Raven felt the need to open the vault now that everyone besides Yang, that knows she is the Spring Maiden is dead. Also there is always 4 maidens(unless you have whatever power Salem gave to Cinder who can just take them all), so Raven can't get the power.
Ah yes the MAIDENBOWL.
Cinder is stronger, but Raven is far more experienced and cunning....using the physical environment as an additional weapon against Cinder.
One thing that might've helped Volume 5 is if CRWBY had used "time cards" here and there....like the scene with Raven & Cinder might've said "Five minutes earlier..." to account for Yang's delayed entry into the scene. You just have to infer it, and you have to infer from dialogue that Blake's timeline is happening behind the main timeline until this very episode.
So good
I understand that you think Adam is a little...bitchy, let's say, but wait until u see what is under his mask
....more bitch xD
And that changes nothing, their opinion is still correct, he handled it very badly.
@@jeffreysmith236 Adam handled Life very badly, always beliving his way was the right way and never even considering another path
Circumstances don't excuse a person's choices. He's still accountable for his own actions. Adam chose to define himself by his circumstances and thus intentionally made those poor choices.
@@djsaucy_tonightBlake leaving him and him going further into insanity by choice, never stoping to think if his choice was the right one, made it very clear that he knew all along that he was only in it for his pesonal revange, never giving a shit about the faunus in the slightest. He is at fault but so is everyone that followed him and choose not to see his mental decline, like Blake did until he went to far
Unless a death is shown on screen....to me it's not confirmed...after all...pyhra was not exactly censored
Oh, *now* they send the Thor character after the guy who injected lightning dust into his body; had to wait for Blake's entrance. Yes, Weiss, your performance was very annoying. Raven had her aura when she was frozen, but Cinder did not, so...
His tactics arne't justified, but when you see what humans did to Adam in the future, his hate IS justified. And what the faunus are allegory for makes the cheering against him kinda ugly. He's blinded by his hate, but his hate in understandable.
Ok to everyone thinking ruby needs to become a maiden I will tell keep ruby pure because the saying is true power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely if you think about this picture the most powerful person in any universe them picture that person with the power of God which technologically that's what the maiden powers are so no ruby has enough power with her semblance and the silver eyes
