The medieval world was hard to understand, and the people believed that their souls were always in danger of being stolen away by all sorts of spiritual creatures. In todays episode of Medieval Madness, we have a look at a few of those creatures!

It is. Maybe one washed up onshore. The seas were much more "whole" than now, with large populations of fish; I'm sure now and again a deep sea denison would end up on the beach.

They tend to wash up on the shore every now and then and look even more scary because from the lack of pressure they become all puffy and distorted.

As a kid, I was so obsessed with dinosaurs and Medieval times. I would skim through the school library looking through the books about Medieval Europe and I was so drawn to that time frame. I especially loved the books that were made to look like as if they were made during that time and they decorated around the edges of text with mythical beings and beasts. One such creature I always laughed at were depictions of demons with faces on their @$$es. 🤣💀 I still laugh at that, even as a middle aged woman. Medieval people had such imagination but also great sense of humor. I love their fart jokes, especially jokes about the clergy. Even in Medieval times they made fun of politics and religions. 🤭 The more I read about that time, the more I realize we are more prudent now than then. Try making fun of religion now and people will go after you. Back then it was a way to overcome the plague and real hardships of life itself.

A little addition regarding the unicorns: Because of attributed magical powers the horns were believed to possess, Narwhal tusks frequently were sold as Unicorn horns to (often wealthy and noble) people by Vikings and other nordish traders for high amounts of money.

Also horn of Onyx. In reality Unicorn was a greek name for a wild bull depictured in profile on egyptian pictures. Dragons were in reality crocodiles, living in much larger aeras than today.

A beautiful young lady sits in a wooded glade, and a rhinoceros comes out of the trees and lays its head down in her lap. As she begins to pet it, a knight bursts out of his hiding place and complains, "that's not a unicorn!" The lady replies, "sure it is, it's only got one horn." The knight says, "well, that's only TECHNICALLY a unicorn." The lady says, "well, you told me I was TECHNICALLY a virgin."

2:41 It is now thought by animal researchers that "unicorns" might have been derived from the real horns that might have come from the narwhal (cetaceans of the far north and arctic regions) where the story might have evolved into the creature to explain the natural world that no one understood. The 'horn' is a misnomer since it is really a tusk, a twisted tooth found in the left-hand tusk position of the skull (the right side socket being empty). These 'horns' look identical to the many drawings and renderings of these early monk-artists.

I find it interesting how unicorns were originally seen as extremely fierce and untameable beasts, with only the supposed "purity" of a virgin girl being (paradoxically) able to calm them. Whereas nowadays, they're typically depicted as gentle, innocent creatures. I feel like maybe the constant depiction of unicorns relaxing next to fair maidens led to them gaining this more docile, sweet-natured persona?

That is the running theory in fact! Imagine stumbling across the skeleton of a raptor or even a Rex that was loosened from the earth after an earthquake. Cyclops were thought to have been the skeletons of mammoths or even common elephants. They have a single hole in the center of their skull through which the massive trunk muscles pass.

You’re very wrong about travel being rare. Pilgrimages, festival and market and feast day celebrations, service in the military, and even the occasional, usually religious, visit to a foreign city were all incredibly common and accessible.
It might be more correct to say that certain parts of the Middle Ages and certain regions had far more difficult travel than in the modern day, but most common folk would (usually) have a good deal of moving about they could do. The obvious exceptions of slaves, serfs, and thralls excepted.

    • @Voirreydirector
      @Voirreydirector Год назад +1

It may be said also that a great pilgrimage or feast day walk may only be 30 miles away, so it is according to how you define the word travel.

Vaccinated or not - I really don’t care… this just cracked me up…
    ABBOTT AND COSTELLO’S ‘WHO’S BEEN VACCINATED?’ 😆🤣😆
Bud: ‘You can’t come in here!’
    Lou: ‘Why not?’
    Bud: ‘Well because you’re unvaccinated.’
    Lou: ‘But I’m not sick.’
    Bud: ‘It doesn’t matter.’
Lou: ‘Well, why does that guy get to go in?’
    Bud: ‘Because he’s vaccinated.’
    Lou: ‘But he’s sick!’
Bud: ‘It’s alright. Everyone in here is vaccinated.’
Lou: ‘Wait a minute. Are you saying everyone in there is vaccinated?’
    Bud: ‘Yes.’
Lou: ‘So then why can’t I go in there if everyone is vaccinated?’
Bud: ‘Because you’ll make them sick.’
Lou: ‘How will I make them sick if I’m NOT sick and they’re vaccinated.’
    Bud: ‘Because you’re unvaccinated.’
    Lou: ‘But they’re vaccinated.’
Bud: ‘But they can still get sick.’
Lou: ‘So what the heck does the vaccine do?’
    Bud: ‘It vaccinates.’
Lou: ‘So vaccinated people can’t spread covid?’
Bud: ‘Oh no. They can spread covid just as easily as an unvaccinated person.’
Lou: ‘I don’t even know what I’m saying anymore. Look. I’m not sick.
    Bud: ‘Ok.’
Lou: ‘And the guy you let in IS sick.’
    Bud: ‘That’s right.’
Lou: ‘And everybody in there can still get sick even though they’re vaccinated.’
    Bud: ‘Certainly.’
Lou: ‘So why can’t I go in again?’
    Bud: ‘Because you’re unvaccinated.’
Lou: ‘I’m not asking who’s vaccinated or not!’
Bud: ‘I’m just telling you how it is.’
Lou: ‘Never mind. I’ll just put on my mask.’
    Bud: ‘That’s fine.’
Lou: ‘Now I can go in?’
    Bud: ‘Absolutely not?’
Lou: ‘But I have a mask!’
    Bud: ‘Doesn’t matter.’
Lou: ‘I was able to come in here yesterday with a mask.’
    Bud: ‘I know.’
Lou: So why can’t I come in here today with a mask? ….If you say ‘because I’m unvaccinated’ again, I’ll break your arm.’
    Bud: ‘Take it easy buddy.’
Lou: ‘So the mask is no good anymore.’
    Bud: ‘No, it’s still good.’
Lou: ‘But I can’t come in?’
    Bud: ‘Correct.’
    Lou: ‘Why not?’
    Bud: ‘Because you’re unvaccinated.’
Lou: ‘But the mask prevents the germs from getting out.’
Bud: ‘Yes, but people can still catch your germs.’
    Lou: ‘But they’re all vaccinated.’
Bud: ‘Yes, but they can still get sick.’
    Lou: ‘But I’m not sick!!’
Bud: ‘You can still get them sick.’
Lou: ‘So then masks don’t work!’
    Bud: ‘Masks work quite well.’
Lou: ‘So how in the heck can I get vaccinated people sick if I’m not sick and masks work?’
    Bud: ‘Third base.’
End of scene...it’s the Hypocrisy for me!!
Stolen from a friend. Feel free to do the same. 😆 🤦‍♀️🤷‍♀️🤣

mermaids still exist in south america they r not beautiful they just have something
that anyone can b fascinated and they speak our language in south america s spanish,
and u may see them in the nights, they appear mostly if u put a statue of a man near a cliff,
so no need to wait hours to see a mermaid.
U can put a sensor near the statue in case something s detected, i dont live near the beach,
but i heard always ppl sharing their experience when they go near a cliff after work or just may
see the view, due there was always a huge light near in every beach in Peru, and even fishermen
said they r sometimes stalking u, or kinda singing may so far away but barely u listen some female voice,
due the waves or ur radio interrupt their voices.
they dont ever attack u or play with u, i repeat this, they r not beautiful actually they r kinda fat with kinda female
faces with big mouth, like if u see a lion which in the past ppl thought lion have male faces😅which s not but
for the hair and beard easily was drawn as a face man.
in Peru and also mexico they r seen in hidden areas mostly lonely beaches.
If ur intention is to record putting loads of cameras or may capture any is impossible 😂,
they r like rainbows, u can see but never catch they simply ran away, also they know when
machines r close making them scare and obviously never b seen.
g luck if any is pretty interested to go to peru or mexico to see a mermaid, in mexico b careful,
due exist mafia and they like to kil…. foreigners due they r not from here.
    cheers

I like your videos, but you are inaccurate in a lot of things trying to tie religion to just about everything. The unicorn was a rhinoceros. Their horns were very valued. They’re fierceness is because rhinos will easily kill a man.
