And they never forgot Mr Johnny Cash helped them get started " we got paid by Cash " and they did great. I'm lucky I hear them on the radio every so often. Never be another group like them. I listen to them most nights while I sleep because I have to have music playing so I can sleep , even at 57 I can't sleep with out some sort of music or " white noise " .
They were very young here. They never lost their talent during their 40+ years in the business. They were the very best country and gospel singers to ever take the stage. Thanks for this classic post.
I LOVED this song when I was a kid. I hadn't heard it in years. Then one night I had left the radio on in the bathroom. The music was soft and didn't bother me so I left it on. But I woke up with this song playing. I jumped out of bed to turn the radio up so I could hear it better and was in such a hurry that I walked (ran) into the wall. I just knew that I had broken my hand, but I stood there in the dark, holding my hand while I listened to this song. I have never done anything like that for any other group or song.

God bless Johnny for bringing this wonderful group to the forefront and giving their careers that lift. They were my favorite country group for years. I got to see them so many times in concert. My heart broke when Lew got sick and had to leave the group. The sound was never the same. I wish heavenly rest for Lew and Harold; they’re just waiting for Donnie and Phil to get the group together again. I’m so glad I kept all their albums. The return of the turntable and vinyl was such a gift.

Baritones almost always are nice guys, who have no need of shining right, left and center. It goes with the baritone territory to stay in the background, leave the limelight to the others, and fill in whatever note that otherwise would be missing in the harmonies. Take Doy Ott of The Statesmen. Deeply musical man, very smooth and pleasant voice, very impressive range. He did like three solos in his twenty-five years with The Statesmen.
Had the priviilage of going to a Statler Brothers concert twice, both with Lew Dewitt.A fabulous show I'll always remember R.I.P. Lew and Harold and thank you for all the great music!
Ditto for me. Saw them twice back in the 1970's. They were great. While singing "Noah found grace," Lew had a brain freeze and forgot where he was in the song. The other three turned and looked at Lew, while the band kept playing. He looked totally confused. Then Harold said, "You're supposed to sing such and such," after which Harold turned to the audience and said, "I'm the Lord. I know everything." The house rocked with laughter, Lew was back on track and they finished the song perfectly.
@@patriot4786 No. He means the best quartet. The Statlers were more than a country music quartet. They could sing what ever style of quartet singing they wanted to.
@2:25 That just might be the highest note I've heard Lew sing. I don't know what key they are in, but Lew is singing a 3rd above that in the high tenor range of the scale. I'm going to assume that the song is in Aflat & Lew is hitting a C note proper. If it's in a higher key than that, I'll be floored cause that is a crazy high note for a male singing a non falsetto.
He was probably the most animated of the group too! And that might be the highest note I’ve heard Harold sing too! Such a great song. So glad I tripped across this version
Close. It's in the key of G. Still, it's a B which is full throated tenor. That was my last comfortable note 32 years ago. It's dropped 2 steps, but I gained 9 on the bottom end so now I am a really low tenor.
@@KevinHoekman That's an awesome range!!!!!!! When I was 16, an A note was pretty much the top of my range. I'm 38 now & my high range has improved a little. Bb is my highest non-falsetto note & I can hit that clean on a good (allergy free) day. It isn't always comfortable, but I can also squeeze out a B when the vowel shape is right. I've always been lucky to hit a clean F# or G in the lower baritone/bass range. I haven't really conditioned or exercised my voice for several yrs outside of normal talking & some occasional singing. I often wonder what my range could actually be with proper conditioning?
@@redlinemando Wow, Bb4 non falsetto is great. I could only get C5 at 90db. Really had to blast it but it hurt. My favorite was A4. There was a song that ended on it and I was the only tenor in the choir to hit it every time. Good memories.

I am & always will be a Lew Dewitt fan & as well, I prefer his vocals, but Jimmy Fortune did the best he could with the cards he was dealt & absolutely no one, at that time, could have done better or even as good at filling Lew's spot. Yes Johnny looks out of it in this video. This was probably when his addiction was at its worst. In the introduction he says they are really brothers but only Harold and Don Reid were brothers. kelton Thomas are you talking about Jimmy Fortune??? Hes tenor voice was ABSOLUTELY different compared to Lew DeWitt's tenor vocal.... Lew Dewitt (the one in this video) was the best in my opinion
Love this song so full of TRUTH & FAITH! We should be doing the same to wicked government today. Stay in God's will & reject all laws going against God's will.
Saw the Statler Brothers when they were touring with Johnny Cash in 1972 or 1973 at the old Boston Garden with my parents and my Aunt Isabel , Uncle Bob and their friends Leo and Annie. I was in 3rd grade. When i got home i wanted to slick my hair back get a white tuxedo shirt black jacket and go to school looking like Johnny Cash! . Saw the Statlers again in the 90s at Cohasset music circus with my wife and still love to listen to them now.
This is the only video of the fourth man where the tenor hit the B. All others only go to G. It's why the last note sounds so good, it's got that 3rd on the top end. Lew was the best, effortless.

Love this song so full of TRUTH & FAITH! We should be doing the same to wicked government today. Stay in God's will & reject all laws going against God's will.
Lews part at the end is great!
Daniel Chapter 3◇ Psalm 34:7◇
Saw the Statler Brothers when they were touring with Johnny Cash in 1972 or 1973 at the old Boston Garden with my parents and my Aunt Isabel , Uncle Bob and their friends Leo and Annie. I was in 3rd grade. When i got home i wanted to slick my hair back get a white tuxedo shirt black jacket and go to school looking like Johnny Cash! . Saw the Statlers again in the 90s at Cohasset music circus with my wife and still love to listen to them now.
I love all parts, but gees, a good bass man is the best!!
This is the only video of the fourth man where the tenor hit the B. All others only go to G.
It's why the last note sounds so good, it's got that 3rd on the top end.
Lew was the best, effortless.
God is in control don't forget to pray for you and others

Great song

No...………..let's not ruin something GOOD by even "hypothetically" calling it a BAD name. Someone these days might take it & run with it. Such was probably the case leading to the death of real country music.
awesome
Ony the 2 on the left are Brothers......
Brothers in Christ... perhaps?
