Been there last week, absolutely impressive to stand at almost 3900 meters and have a closeup view of the Breithorn, a 4000+ meter peak. To all the haters: not exactly sure what it’s “ruining”, the Swiss and Italians have a knack for making mountains accessible in a non-intrusive way.
As a Swiss I can confirm this is true. Buildings such as these on a mountain add to the mountain experience instead of ruining it. The mountain is still there, nothing that has been built is big enough do ruin a mountain.
I was there a little over a month ago as well, I loved being able to pop out of the station to climb Breithorn and be back in Zermatt in just a few hours. The Klein Matterhorn cable car provides phenomenal access to to the mountains for all kinds of people who would otherwise never get to experience the views and terrain you find up there.
They are making the natural splendor of Mother Nature accessible to people who might not otherwise be able to enjoy the wonders of their World. In that sense, the visionaries who designed this system have enhanced, rather than detracted from, the mountain experience. The engineering and execution are a testament to abilities of mankind when we work together to create rather than destroy.

Maybe you meant "Altoatesini engineers". If you really knew the area where they come from you would know that altoatesini are South Tyroleans for first and nothing they have to do with Germans. It is true that they are a german speaking community (more exactly an austrian speaking) but they are Italian by birth and passport as well is 100% Italian the company those engineers work for. And for what i know so far the other big worlwide competitor of HTI (of which Leiner it is part) is the austrian Doppelmayr. So no typical German industrial sector, perhaps in the future but not now.
Yes, and ladder "surfing" is a sure way to get thrown off the job in many parts of the US. The OSHA inspectors would drop a testicle if they saw that. I will admit however it was executed perfectly and looked slick.
The roof on a new stadium in Detroit collapsed because the team putting it together thought it would flex better under extreme weather variations if they left half the bolts out. When they rebuilt it, the engineers had to explain the roof was designed to flex with ALL the bolts in.
They would be some fit and tough lads working there. Working at altitude in extreme conditions and shovelling constantly is like being in the gym all day every day.

That is one of these red plastic balls that are mounted on the cables so that the helicopters can spot them and avoid crashing into the cables. It only appears to be moving since the camera is moving. You can see two of them on the left side at 20:53, another one at 23:05 and three of them again at 27:38..
That's wild. I just watched a video of people riding on this cable tram a few hours ago & I commented on how I could imagine how they built this using helicopters, but I couldn't fathom how they installed the cables & now here's a video discussing the construction. They didn't address the main thing I wanted to know. How do they string up the initial cable? I suppose maybe they use a helicopter, but it seems that the cable would be too heavy & awkward for a helicopter to pull to that distance & elevation.
5 minutes explaining exactly what problem they have solved would have been nice. Is there a tunnel for people to walk through to the other cable car at the top? How do people get to the base station which is just 1.5km lower than the peak?
nice documentary, one thing tho, when talking about how the cables got into place, you showed clips of the other gondola, the one that goes to zermatt, not the one going to Italy.
Interesting, the testing on the wires and components was done at a lower altitude and a normal temperature, let’s hope it holds up to the extreme conditions where it counts
Believe me, these people, companies and engineers know what they are doing and this is not the first cable car they are building (there are around 2,400 cable car systems in Switzerland).

How ridiculous, If a woman applied to do it and was qualified and knocked back because of her sex then fair enough to comment but your assumption that equality has been threatened is quite something! Or do you know something the rest of us don't? In which case why not enlighten us with the full story.
Italian engineering is high class. I hope the mafia stays out, since are now again ruining the country and this time it’s very serious. I hope for Italy they can overcome the situation.
Not exactly, this new gondola lift adds more possibilities of access to the glacier in the international ski area Zermat (Switzerland)-Cervinia (Italy). Although it is likely that they will raise the daily cost from the current 70 to €90/100
It seems common these days to hear women say "We don't need men." I wonder how many of those women will be riding this, and whether their opinion might change.
Why are they building this cable car system in the first place? Who are the commuters who need this? Or is it yet another pricey tourist trap at 100 francs per ride?
It is certainly not intended for commuters, tourists, skiers who want to go from the Italian to the Swiss side (or vice versa). This trip alone certainly doesn't cost CHF 100, but I wouldn't expect it to be cheap either.
I know it’s added for drama, but one needs to be careful how many times they say how it’s being built on a strict deadline….. I personally won’t interact with machinery that was built according to timeline rather than quality. Use China and their many belt and road projects for example. It’s all falling apart…..Tom

Well, they don't say it's in Germany, they say the raw material comes from Germany.

how do they get the initial cable up the mountain? helicopter?
