    Hey Kent! You could not have picked a more memorable Jazz standard in my opinion. I first heard this played by my father on Trombone and of course I wanted to be like him, so when he gave me his trombone, manufactured in the year before my birth in Fullerton, CA, this was the piece I learned first. Thank you for bringing back my family musical heritage to me. I really appreciate it! Music sometimes is a time capsule paying it forward to future generations. Cheers!

    I’ve been interested in learning to play in all twelve keys, and found that an arrangement based on fourths was a much easier way of doing this, as I could think of the chords more in terms of hand shapes, which made it easier to move from key to key.

    Many might not initially understand the significance of what you just presented here. Hope they do. Great job! Ya know Kent I always thought of the Aug. 4th voicings as #9 voicings and then of course the many ambiguous uses with just changing the root note. That's really a nice way of thinking quartal voicings. I think if you gave a more definitive circumstance for using the Aug 4th voicing vs. the regular quartal voicing that might clear up alot of things.
    Look fwd to your next Ambiguous quartal Video Play Modern #2. I'm really interested in all the different ways/options you use them. Cheers.

    Thank you Kent for sharing ALL you have learned - in a most-understandable manner too, about "the Divinely Created Circle" !! SUMMERTIME was my vocal audition choice - while trying earnestly to accompany myself, for our music college. I think the jury looked past my playing...cause I was accepted into the program... They even complimented a "beautiful" vocal... Self-studying jazz chordals now, ... My understanding & performance of SUMMERTIME is leaping forward..I think I love you, my friend💘. I looked at all the wonderful tunes you so generously offered on your website... The problem for me, being a late-comer to the piano, is there are no lyrics.... Unfortunately the puzzle thus appears overwhelming. 😔 If possible for you to offer your piano wisdom on standard jazz tunes, "With Lyrics",. that would be, (besides hearing you in concert, in person,) would be just the best!

    thank you.
    Actually it's very interesting because we can see the great pianist you are be confused by modal approach with your chords approach.
    The fourth's is a way to take the train of fifths by reverse.
    It's like an other language, but, in a way it's closer to the reality of sound than the Tonal approach in wich you have always to make exceptions if you don't want to make a boring music.
    I am not a pianist, but, when i try to understand the music I don't need the "chord" notion. I promise it's not a fake.
    Key, the train of fifths, and keyboard topography are sufficient to play things I like, which is often calles "modal".
    I only learn how to name chords for understanding what people with this approach (99.99%) are saying.
    For me, out of the "chord / tonal" approach, the music is just following trains of fourths and shifting trains (half tone by half tone)
    Translating this in chords will be a mess.
    Sorry, I cannot explain this in a comment, but I just wanted to thank you, because you play modal far far far better than me but you seem to remain confused when you have to explain it with your chordal / tonal language. That's very touching, but also educationnal.
    (sorry for my very bad english)

  • @LukasVlcek
    @LukasVlcek Год назад +1

    Kent, I am looking at the (WIP) music chart that you linked and I have a question about minor chord sus4. There are some examples of Dm(sus4) or Gm(sus4). Do you think you can elaborate on this? Is this something that can be spotted in music/jazz literature often? How shall the reader understand this notation? Is it a direction that tells the improviser that the melody line should follow a minor tonality? For example bar no.11. Dm(sus4) where the second half of the bar uses f natural in the left hand.

    • @KentHewittpiano88
      @KentHewittpiano88  Год назад +1

      Lukas, Thanks for the question. The msus4 is just a way of writing that the scale of the chord has a minor 3rd and a perfect 4th. A D7sus 4 would have replaced the major 3rd with a perfect 4th. The important thing is to understand that it's a D dorian scale (a C major scale starting on D and the underlying chord isa perfect 4th (quartal harmony) which moves ascending using the notes of the C major scale.

    • @LukasVlcek
      @LukasVlcek Год назад

      Thanks@@KentHewittpiano88
      Interesting. I would basically try to avoid the 3rd scale degree (be it minor or major) in tercial harmony on SUS chords, but here you are saying that in quartal harmony the SUS chords can include the 3rd degree (and hence we need to know if it is minor or major). Is that correct interpretation?
