You're one of my favorite pianist on RUclips. I watched your videos when I was younger because I wanted to play Jazz. But things changed, I decided to pursue art instead. Now I watch your videos to put a smile on my face.
The Professor is great at that, too.
If you chose art.....I'm sure you will be successful....but please write to me.
You deserve awards for your teaching.
Thanks so much...glad you like it!
I learn music from Kent Hewitt. He can teach anyone if he can teach me. This video is way above my head, but I understood it, finally. I needed to watch it several times, and I’m going to watch it several more, but the lesson got through. This is great teaching; Kent is a great professor. I’m proud to say I study with Kent.
Thanks for telling me. Your comment is a blessing to me and so helpful. Swing on!
@@KentHewittpiano88Thanks, Professor! This lesson is such a goldmine; it’s just superlative.
Best jazz RUclipsr and best song.... what else 😍
Wonderful comment...and means so much to me...so helpful!
Better than ever
Thank you, my best buddy always!
The fastest 25 minutes in history. Well explained KH.
25 minutes is your talent...thanks!
you are one of the best teachers on youtube, i sincerely appreciate these videos. thanks a bunch, hope you’re well
Thanks so much...that means the world to me!
Kent Hewitt has a better radio/tv voice than the vast majority of the others.
BRAVO, Maestro KH! Like most of your fans, I come for the MUSIC, and you always deliver! 🎵❤️🎶
Thanks so much, Marilyn...you are the BEST!
I watched all 25 min in the morning because it's my fav song.
Thanks for telling me!
What a fantastic lesson in diminished patterns, and the use of Bass notes to represent the Dominant 7th Flat 9. Very insightful indeed. You are a maestro..!
Thanks for the affirmation....so helpful to me!
Great lesson, cant wait to practice it. Please, provide this technique applied to another song in a separate video. Many thanks and all the best to you!
Great suggestion!
Outstanding lecture, real value here by Kent who unlocks these jazz musical mysteries in a very open and informative manner. Highly recommended.
Many thanks for the comment!

You just opened my eyes. I was never comfortable learning Piano Jazz but with guitar we do that often. Now is so much clear!
Thanks for telling me!
Hello Kent! It's me, Christian. We had some wonderful chats a few years ago. I have a gig as a piano teacher now, classical and jazz. Still learning, as we all do. I'm very happy to see that you are fine and still teaching all these killer techniques and concepts. Love the George Shearing (as I call it) voicing technique! My dad explained it to me. It was/is extensively used in four voice writing for the big band (four Bb trumpets, four trombones and five saxes: 2 alto, 2 tenor and one bari). Pure class!
Hi Christian, so good to hear from you again. I had wondered. Congrats on your success. You are fortunate to have a dad like that...wish I did.,....and you are exactly right. Please keep in touch...means a lot to me to hear from you.....many fans disappear so I wholeheartedly welcome you back to the Jazz Ranch.
@@KentHewittpiano88 thanks so much for the reply! Unfortunately my late dad didn't play the piano. He was band leader, woodwind player and arranger. I had to figure out most of it myself, which is extremely hard. Jazz schools were all on your side of the Atlantic and ridiculously expensive. Glad I am able to share my humble knowledge with younger folks. Still learning, as we all do. Will catch you later, all the best!!!
I always loved your videos. But now I am distracted by that beautiful panorama of your window :D so nice
Don't mean to distract just add some atmosphere!
I've watched quite a few vids on locked hands, but they only went as far as explaining the maj 6 and dim chords. You have unlocked the rest of the theory for me and I can't thank you enough .
I'm glad I could help out! Thank you!
Thanks, Kent!
You are very welcome!
Notes to self: Barry Harris ; Mel Buckner - Locked hands - Shearing ;; 20:00 meat of video; Locked hands technique - double the melody in bass ! ; approach each chord with its dom7b9 (diminished). "diminished approach tones" - "It's traditional". Dropped two is a different sound. Kent seems to do the locked hands technique with 3 or 4 notes in closed voicing in right hand.
You got it right, brother. Thanks for the affirmation!
This makes unified sense of a lot of stuff I've kind of figured out in a fragmented way. Many thanks.
Great comment.....I'm glad to help out!
I just love the movement of your inner voices and the harmonies they produce. Truly innovative and unique, yet swing like crazy. Thanks Kent. This made my day. It's my second favorite song. Autumn leaves is the top.
Wow, thank you!
Excellent video. Please continue
Thanks, will do!
Thank you for this lesson. So helpful. You are a great teacher. Thank you.
Thanks so much!
Bring it on. It's really above my level, as I don't get to play, anywhere near as much as I'd like, but it's something to consider when my brain needs a workout...and it sounds nice.
Make another video.
It's good food for your music brain...yes!!
Thanks Kent! This ties in with Pat Martino's parental root of all chords lesson and Richie Zellon's recent excellent visit to the private lessons he got from Pat, both viewed on youtube. Your explanation zooms it in for me and gives some practical points to explore. No plateau here.
I haven't studied those theories...but I'm so glad you have and turned me on to them....that's what we are here for!! Thanks!

Great kent
Thank you so much for teaching us those wonderful harmony secrets
My pleasure.....and I'm glad you know they ARE secrets!
Thanks again Kent.. this is very useful. I've recently been working with block chords and have several George Shearing books and it's great to apply it to tunes like Fly me to the Moon.

That's just great...thanks for telling me.
Thanx, Maestro 🌹😎🌹
Thank you, BB!!
Kent..this was a super video..no wonder why I have always loved George G. Beautiful diminished patterns
..love the left hand melody accompaniment..guess I'm very appreciative of the traditional masters! Your videos are always enlightened with interesting themes....🥰🥰😎
Great comment, Phyllis...did you mean to write George S for Shearing?....not sure. But regardless...I love Gershwin too!....and your comments mean so much to me!
Yes Kent...should have been an S...loved his sound!
Thank you Master Kent
You are very welcome!
ACE. Thank you, teacher!
Thank you so much!
Thx so much Ken the Witt or maybe Ken the Wizz !
I have been working on this for some time but i believe you just put you your finger where it makes me understand how to integrate it into the changes. Greetings.
Great comment...and I'm glad to help out w/ shading some light on musical concepts. Cheers!
@@KentHewittpiano88 you are great at making me understand harmonic concepts. With simple and clear assessments.
I really appreciate the affirmation...means so much to me!
Thank you.
You're welcome!
Very interesting and useful theory and I loved your solo in the beginning
Thanks so much!
Hey Kent! You pick the best tunes to explain concepts with my man! Dig the technique! Love the laid.back backing track.i mma have to come back and check this some more with my keys on.But let me thank you right now. I play this. One in key of C. So will learn it in this key just for the chops. 😀 I put this technique to playing Sunny Side of the Street. You learn so much from listening to the Big piano guys! Dad was.totally into George Shearing. Too bad i only.now.getting to what he was hearing in those guys. Keep playing and posting. You do the.best thing a teacher can ever do. Make the student want to play stuff! Big respect and Happy Holidays to you and altered.dominant guy! 😎
Coolest comment on this video yet! Warren...you are my man...wish we could hang out ..... This is the key of C, relative to Am. Swing loose and happy holidays (check out my Christmas song tutorials)!
@@KentHewittpiano88 Lolololol We have to hang out bro_ you have a bunch of cool music stories i want to hear.I have a few to tell too.Keep playing and posting Kent. And i l try to keep on the Sunny side of the Street! 😎 😎.ONE!

Very informative and helpful indeed. Thank you Kent and please do a follow-up video.
Thanks for the comment!
Reminds me of the Count Basie sound. You have the magic
So cool comment...because you understand the Basie sound and knew that this was it! Swing loose, bro!
@@KentHewittpiano88 Your intro reminded me of the Sinatra at the sounds Album. One of my favourites. I love your work Kent.

That was an amazing tutorial! I’ll be going back to it many times to learn as much as I can.
You’re an amazing keyboardist and musician and teacher.
Thank you so much!
Thanks so much for such an awesome comment...so helpful to me!
Just awesome
Very insightful as always. Been fascinated for a while by Barry Harris's diminished 6th scale and you make it easy to understand. Thanks for sharing!
Also, I love Poinciana! ;)
Thank you so much!
Fantastic lesson!
Glad you liked it!
Inspiring thanks
My pleasure!
Thank you Kent I got it
Thanks!
Hi. Tried to follow along. I’m thinking a bit in terms of not just chords but shapes. For instance, say the melody is the third note of the chord in the right hand. So, G, A, C, E. If you double the melody line in the bass and add a fifth below you get an interesting feel. What that is, F^13. Or, if you double the bass note of the chord in the right hand and add a 5th above that, you’re working off a G13. In any event, something I’m struggling with is building up the simultaneous speed and length of my licks.

It took me forever, and it was challenging, but I learned the maj6, diminished scale both hands in all 12 keys
How long did it take? And how much experience as a pianist do you have?
@@danielburriss7827 2 weeks, an hour a day dedicated to just those chords. I used to play when I was younger, but I quit for a while and just recently started taking lessons again. My teacher had me drill these chords which is why I learned them. I tried to learn them all in one week so I could have them by the next lesson, but it wasn't possible for me.
It would mean that you have a technical knowledge of music in a very specific category...it would not mean that you are a good musician, of course. But it is impressive that you thought it was important enough in your scope of music knowledge and vocabulary that you would do that!
@@KentHewittpiano88 Indeed, you are right! It remains just a drill to me, but I'm sure in the future it will manifest itself in my playing, much like how you demonstrated in this video
Muito bom
Hey Kent! Long time no see! Glad to hear your YT channel is doing well! Good stuff!
Are you playing anywhere in CT soon?
Cheers,
Emile/Drums
Thanks, Emile...so good to hear from you, Write to my email for gig news.
Great ideas for using dim. chords, thanks Kent. Whatever happened to the Mason & Hamlin though?
Oh, it's still here...I only use the the Roland when I want the convenience of one studio...I have to move all the equipment downstairs for the other set up.
In the sheet after the half diminished chord it lists a flat nine chord but isnt it a sharp nine? Wait im thinking the flat nine happens on the next chord? Its 2 diminished chords a whole step apart? So the first one is like an E with a b5, 6th, and a sharp 9.... I think I got it...
You got it , bro...it's a little tricking...once you get it...it's simple.
What software is that you're using to show the notes displayed on the staff
Chordie....thanks for the comment!
Hi Kent, great stuff!! I am a begginer (62). What keyboard are you using. Sounds really good. Thanks
Roland RD 300 and Mason and Hamlin AA .1905.
@@KentHewittpiano88 wow! that is one of the best pianos in the world. congratulations.... and you Kent, you are awesome! Gran Maestro!
Hi Kent - what do you use for your overhead keyboard camera?
I'm using a Canon Vixia movie camera....but that's because It has inputs for headphones and for the mixer and backing track. You will need a boom stand with a special attachment. Write to my email.
Brilliant. Getting right into this. What software do you use to bring those chords on the screen? cheers ATB
I use Chordie for the chords and OBS studio for the multi-screens. These are not easy programs.
@@KentHewittpiano88 cheers. ive used obs before so ill look at chordie too. atb Gary

Don’t quite understand? Dichotomy= a division or contrast between two things.
Maybe you could explain in another way? I always appreciate your replies
