On "My Car Story" we're at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance in Pebble Beach CA on 8-18-22.
We're looking at a 1960 Lincoln Continental Mark V Convertible in Sapphire Paint. The car comes with the factory 430 CI engine, and an automatic transmission.
The car's Owner is Glenn Kramer. Glenn’s had this car since 2012. Glenn shares he grew up with Lincolns, saw this one, bought it, and here it is.
ENJOY!
This Lincoln is stunning. The color, fit and finish, the attention to detail are incredible. A work of art. It
proves a point that cars today are boring. Cars back then have class.
Hi Michael, Happy to read you enjoy this "Stunning" car :-) Lou
That Mark V is drop dead gorgeous! I love that Sapphire Blue paint job on that car, along with the matching interior! The engine sounds healthy, and that car is the opitomy of pure excellence! Another gem from the past! Nice job Lou!
Hi Michael, High praise :-) My pleasure sharing this "Gem" with you, Lou
Very nice Mark V! These Mark's are the forgotten ones in a lot of ways. When Ford reset the naming in the late 1960s, the early Marks, after the Mark II, faded into the recesses of time.
This one is a beauty and just about perfect. Thanks Lou and Glenn!
Hi Jeff, "This one is a beauty and just about perfect" High praise :-) You're welcome, Lou
What a lovely green jewel! An excellent example of rolling sculpture.
Hi Rob, High praise :-) Lou
I always remember the story of my uncle and aunt that owned a ‘58. It stopped running and my uncle decided to tow it home with a Ford F-100 pickup. My aunt was in the Lincoln and everything was going okay until they had to turn a corner in the city where they lived. My aunt was about 5’2” and probably weighed 120 pounds. My uncle turned the corner no problem, but my aunt ended up pulling both of them into someone’s front yard. My uncle ran up to his wife and said “why the heck didn’t you turn!” He had forgotten that with the engine not running they had no power assist on the steering!
Hi Dave, Aunt in some ones front yard....YIKES! That's a story you remember! Lou
🤣
One of the largest unibody cars ever built; beautiful. Thank you both
Hi Steve, Thank you for viewing, sharing, and you're welcome, Lou
Yes and it caused them to buckle under their own weight because of it
@@todddenio3200 1958 convertibles got recalled for a frame stiffener aft of the transmission, but that's about it. Had a 2dr HT version a couple years ago and it was very rigid.
Beast in turquoise blue.🤗Incredible door panel!🥹Thanks Lou.
Hi Ramon, Happy to share this "Beast" with you :-) You're welcome, Lou
When this car goes by, for that split second you feel like you’re in 1960. These Lincoln’s are rare. They built a lot more Cadillacs than Lincoln’s at that time so when you see one of these it’s more of a head turner than a Cadillac. Beautiful car!!!
Hi Joe, You're right. When they are original, or restored to original, it's like going back in time :-) Lou
They had a very low survival rate as well because they were so heavy that the chassis structure would buckle under the weight
@@todddenio3200 what???
@@derekgaliee4351 easily verified that the convertibles especially would have the bodies buckle under their own weight. They were unibodies and the engineers didn’t design the structure strong enough to hold up without bending and buckling because the cars were so heavy. I first learned about this from my uncle who was an antique and vintage car collector and seller but was hesitant to believe it until I read about it in an issue of Collectable Automobile magazine back in the 80’s. Even the hardtops were known to eventually buckle in the center and/or rear quarters but the convertibles were notorious for it and a very few of them have survived because of it and those that have survived were very gently babied from the day they were bought new. Even the slightest of bumps in the roads would cause them to start buckling within a few years and even sooner if they were used on rough roads. Then add rust into the equation and you have a car that is not likely to survive for very long. They were big, they were beautiful, they were beastly powerful, and they bent like their underside and subframes were made out of tin cans. Not enough under structure from under the front seats back. A lot of long time Lincoln buyers switched to Cadillac because of it
@@todddenio3200 Thank you for the information 👍
From an era of style and class…..long gone.

Lou, this car is a grand slam homerun, a 99 yard touchdown pass completion, a three point, half court, buzzer-beating shot kind of car! Oh, my! What a spectacular color. While this vintage of Lincoln hasn't often been described as beautiful, this particular car is stun-ning! Thanks for capturing this for us and walking us through this stunning Lincoln! This year and model are so rare that this is like having Great Grandma's homemade donuts (oh, my, could that woman cook!) Great video and effort and as always you are a national automotive treasure for capturing these vehicles for posterity and for future generations to worship!
High praise ultraviolet tp :-) You're welcome, Lou
Unbelievable engineering on this car .. shocking details 62 years old in time .. WOW and phenomenol colors -- thanks Lou 😊

High praise Bruce H. :-) You're welcome.
The lines and the color are absolutely stunning!
Mmmhmmmm
High praise :-)
I can't shake the feeling that this was like Pagani of its day. Very stylized in and out, with attention to every detail on every corner.
The color combo may not be for everyone, but will turn heads no matter what.
Glorious car!
Hi TopCars TV, "Very stylized in and out, with attention to every detail on every corner." I agree. A car that was built at a time when Designers enjoyed the details, Lou
Nice Continental Mk5, I love all cars by Continental and Lincoln, it was sure nice to see a Mark 5 in this condition. Great video

Classy! Mr. Kramer definitely knows his Lincolns. You won't miss this one coming or going, and the interior looks great, too. Thanks, Lou!
Hi TheGunfighter45acp, You're right, you will see this one coming from a long way away :-) My pleasure sharing with you. You're welcome, Lou
The front of that Conti reminds me of Bruce, the shark in Finding Nemo. What a boat, a fine automobile. The color and chrome make quite a statement, Northern Cali in a Conti, nice! "This thing stops traffic" and then a detour, LOL
Hi Pat, Thank you for sharing what you notice. Lou

Wow is the only way to describe this car , must be lots of fun showing it to people who have no idea what it is. Great video !

Might have to call this the learning channel, I did not know the early Contis were Mark cars. I'd love to see that dual A/C evaporator setup in detail. Thanks again, Lou!

Hi Kevin, High praise :-) Good time in Pebble Beach, and glad to be able to share it with you, Lou
Even the door's so heavy that 3 hinges are needed, in order to hold it up in place. That voluptuous front bumper is obscene 😍💋
Hi Al Dente, Happy to read the details you enjoy with this car :-) Lou
Lou what an elegant lady this one is, love those old Lincolns the color tops the cake on this too great find like always Lou.
Doug happy to read you enjoy the looks of this car :-) Lou
Good to see the engine compartment containing a component called a "Power Box."
Hi Anthony C, Good point :-) Lou
Speaking of power....these two did not mention the size of that V8, but I believe it would have been the venerable 430ci, that was used for quite a few years after this model....a 460V8 was the last iteration of that engine.
@@curbozerboomer1773 Thanks for that. I was a wondering about the displacement size. Watched the video and didn't recall a mention of it.
Just want say your video's always blow my mind ! You are the hardest working man on youtube. Thank you!
Thank you Sean. I appreciate your kind words and encouragement. You're welcome. Lou

There are a lot of classic cars. This one is absolutely gorgeous
High praise.
In 1984 a small elderly man who had one leg amputated drove one of these to the shop. He said he was refurbishing it by himself. He'd just put the front bumper back on by himself after getting it rechromed, and said it weighed over 150 lbs. I didn't doubt him. His wasn't a convertible.
Hi 20alphabet, Happy to read this car brings back memories :-) Thank you for viewing and sharing, Lou
Hi, Lou! Right on cue, when you said, "Take in the front of THAT!" you could hear "Hahahahaha", then "WHOOOA!" LOL! When you've got that big eggcrate grille with the pinheads in each square, cocked headlights, dagmars that stick out like a sore thumb, big slab sides and all that chrome, fins and jewelry out back, THAT is something you absolutely can't ignore! The Lincoln design team decided it was a little too much and came up with the very clean and understated 1961 Continental that became the template for the next few decades worth of Lincolns. BTW, the 1960 Lincoln convertibles were the last two-door soft-tops they ever made. The 1961-1967 convertibles were all four-doors, and there has not been a convertible Lincoln made since.
BTW, when Lincoln reintroduced the Mark in mid-1968 (as a 1969 model), it was called Mark III rather than Mark VI, apparently because Henry Ford II felt the 1958-1960 Marks were not in the tradition of the original Continental and Continental Mark II.
Question about the seven power window buttons: So he said the back window opens. Were two of the buttons for the vent windows?
Lou, you've found your share of spectacles on this program, and this is definitely one! Many thanks to you and Glenn for sharing and taking us along for a very Continental ride!
Hi iswc27, "you've found your share of spectacles on this program, and this is definitely one!" High praise :-) Thank you for sharing your knowledge, my pleasure sharing with you, and you're welcome, Lou

Hi Larry, "Always a great deal to have a pebble beach car" Agreed. We had a good time sharing this car with you, Lou
What a beauty! Love the Continentals and this one is sweet.
High praise :-)
The inside of the door alone is just the best. The color, the way the top when it's in the down position is so clean up where the package trey would be.I guess it's a fiberglass boot.
Hi Richard, Happy to read the details you enjoy :-) Lou
Another beauty from when I was 18.
Nice :-)
100% Luxury! Simply beautiful Sapphire Lincoln Continental Mark V. Lovely to look at, I would NOT want to drive it. Too Big for me! Another great detail of a classic car, Lou.
Hi Brian, "100% Luxury!" Well said! Lou

Hi Сергій Шамін, Happy to read you're enjoying the cars on this Channel :-) Lou
Thanks for showing this beautiful Lincoln guys .
My pleasure sharing this car with you Donald Donald :-) You're welcome, Lou
Lou I am so happy that the owner pointed out the boot for the convertible top and snuck in a brief description of how it worked before you moved on. Then there was the interior and the owner mentioned that he purchased it in Italy. Seemed like an important part of the story. I always want to know more about the motor and in this case those shiny valve covers. Again no questions asked nor information given. I am always interested in how many years a person has owned a car and how they acquired it.
Bill, You need to read the description of the video which shares "The car comes with the factory 430 CI engine, and an automatic transmission.", Lou
What an incredible car!!
High praise :-)
430 Cubes of pure torque.
Just the way we like it :-)

great and beautiful car............................................... chingon mr lou
High praise mr chon :-)
That color combination would make even a Nash bathtub look beautiful.
High praise :-)
This is indeed a beauty, Lou. The color and paint condition are incredible. Love the seats, appointments and detail to style. The sculpturing on the front fenders (in a way) previewed the 'horse shoe' side sculpturing that would come later on the original Mustang. As great as these cars were, they were kind of a 'dead end' in continuing the Lincoln/Continental in this manner. The 1961 model ushered in a style that would be of its time, and timeless. The '61 in many ways owes much more to the '55-'57 Mark II's in its simplicity. The rear quarter and taillights in particular, very closely. This is interesting because design is generally more evolutionary. In the case, the '58-'60 Mark III-V styling was just dropped without a trace for a clean sheet of paper.
Hi Bob, Happy to read the details you enjoy with this car :-) Lou
What a gorgeous colour. Sunshine ready.
Hi Richard, Happy to read you enjoy the colour of this car :-) Lou
Beautiful Lincoln ! Great color too !
NICE !
Great car, great show Lou!

Beautiful car - a friend in Norfolk had a tomato red convertible.
As I recall, these were the longest American cars built - surpassing the 1959 DeSoto station wagon.

The greatest of all Lincoln convertibles.
High praise :-)
My nephew is friends with Glenn and I saw this car being restored back in 2014.

This car made me miss my 1957 Lincoln Premiere, that I bought in 1970...it had only 32,000 miles on it!...But, being the 22yo idiot I was, I decided to sell it less than a year later...the car was perfect!...I have not seen one on the road for at least 30 years.
Hi Curbozer Boomer, Interesting you mention Lincoln Premiere.....stay tuned :-) Lou
In the next model year, Ford knocked out of the ballpark with the truly classic slab-sided Lincoln Continental. Beautiful!
Hi Jim, Thank you for sharing your preference in model years. Lou
That's a beauty. Great weather.

Thanks for posting Lou. Beautiful car. I prefer the '58-'60 Continental 4 door or hardtop coupe. I think, I'm not sure, that these were the largest American cars ever built. There is a great video about a 1959 barn find Confidential here on youtube. It is by CalculatedRiskFilms. Be blessed always Lou!
Hi Gerry, You're welcome. Thank you for sharing. Blessings received. God bless you too, Lou
That's a pretty one - and note the Gen 3 ('58-'60) was with the uni-body chassis, a 1st for the Lincoln Continential. . . :>/

Amazing ! Love them style Lincoln
And to think them are a nobody car being that big . lol.
And 4- 7 mpg though.
Hi D Owen, Happy to read this car is "Amazing !" :-) Lou
These Lincolns from 1958-1960 did not sell well as compared to Cadillacs from the same period. In the age of excess, and all three luxury brands offered in the USA were guilty of such, the 1959 and 60 Lincolns were luxurious and well detailed. The Imperial had the roadability over Cadillac and Lincoln, but Lincoln offered beauty and body sculpturing that was meant to show off the great size of these cars. Caddy offered the huge fins and Imperial offered the same but a bit more subtle, and Lincoln went into a different styling concept. However, all of these vehicles were unique in style and execution compared to the similarity of cars today. Thank you for sharing this remarkable 1960 Lincoln Continental Mark V convertible on "My Car Story."

Mega disappointed that you didn't have the owner put the top up and show off the reverse-slant back window that actually rolls down! My grandfather had a 58 Continental 2dr and a 58 Capri 2dr. The Continental was plagued with problems, so he traded it for the Capri. I was about 5 or 6 and I just fell in love with those cars. In today's context, these cars were absolutely enormous!
Hi 61 Rampy, Took us quite some time to get the two pieces of the boot for the convertible top down to fit on right :-) Unfortunately time did not allow for a top up display. Happy to read this car brings back memories of your Grandfathers car :-) Thank you for viewing and sharing, Lou
