In this video, we try to make our outdoor space more enjoyable by reducing or repelling biting insects. We love to sit on the front porch in the mornings and in the evenings and enjoy the warmer times of the year. However, mosquitos and other blood suckers can rob the enjoyment. Kelly does the research to see what we can plant to help this situation. Special thanks to YSTAR WPC for helping us with the project by providing the raised bed perfect for the spot we had picked out.
    This is what we planted:
    •Lantana
    •Rosemary
    •Eucalyptus
    •Basil
    •Thai Basil
    •Alyssum
    •Geranium
    •Polka-Dot Plant
    •Lemongrass

Your overseer is adorable. Especially trying to catch each clod of dirt as you throw it in the wheelbarrow.

I know as a fact, that in the Pacific Northwest, if you throw cedar boughs on a campfire, it starts snap, crackling and popping, and every mosquito just disappears.
    It's awesome.

Lemongrass is a beautiful plant that actually does attract bees because it smells like queen bees.

Troy... Try using Pine Tar soap for bug repellent. It works for mosquitoes, ticks, chiggers, etc, and will work for you all around your property.

Personally I quite like insect screening. A good well-fitted screen will keep the mozzies out, even if it can't manage the tiny bugs.

I have a screened in porch and love it. Grilling and eating are so much more enjoyable

I grow mint when it s a foot long I cut it and hang it by door ways and in the hen house, Million of Fly s will leave and find some other house to hang out at, Buy a Sedum plant, when you get a bite, even wasps peel the back off a leaf and put it on the bite, will stop the pain right away and you will never know that you had a bite, every one should have a plant in the yard,

You are good with tools, why not build a wrap-around porch. Then you could have peace and sunshine on both sides.

A little tray planter like that wouldn't be difficult to shift into a greenhouse to keep your plants alive over winter. Easier than having to start from scratch at the start of spring - mosquitoes grow faster than plants!

I think it would be really great if it had wheels! I think everything ought to have wheels, as a matter of fact. I move things around constantly...

I thought about that too, but thought the tray would have to be fairly large & deep & would be too difficult to manage.

The wheels are a great idea! I’ll mention it to Troy along with a handle to pull the raised bed to its new location.

We all have this issue in town, in fields, or in the woods. Towns will spray for these several times a year, but is that good for anyone? Here is my opinion over the years - higher blood sugars attract mosquitoes. If you are the "lower" blood sugar - ie eat less ice cream and soda pop, then you will not be the person they suck on. Kinda like when a bear is chasing you, you don't have to outrun the bear, just the person next to you.
Garlic - Again, my experience if you have garlic in your daily diet you won't get near the bites, if any, as people who don't. I don't even get ticks since I introduced a garlic clove every morning in my diet. Added benefit: it keeps the people away too!
