My wife and I retired summer of 2019. Our house sold in 3 days. We drove 3 thousand miles and looked at 33 houses. We had realtor appointments set-up every city we visited. The last house we walked into we both knew we were home. We felt God's presence.
I knew you would be moving as soon as Wanda saw pecan grove. Congratulations. You two are our examples and pace setters. All glory to God.
Congrats on your "Dream Shop." When you get to the point of planning your home on the property, please consider a ranch home for your older years. With no steps, it just makes life a little easier!

Danny…just a word of caution for you to consider. Steps to a loft. Your legs are gonna get “awfully tired” (as you age) carrying WHATEVER up there. Consider a power lift type apparatus of some sort (flip the switch & up you go). Otherwise, my friend, as time passes you will regret ever building it that TALL

Why would you want to move and start over at your age? You have everything you need already. Doesn't pecan grove have more land than the ten acres you have now?
Yes land is what we were after.
Good for you both. As your transition is going forward... i would have house movers jack the DS off grid cabin, and move it to PG. Maybe even 2 of the greenhouses too.
I have been in the downsize/switchover mode for 3 yrs on our place and this yr im going to get it finished.

We have a large shop. When you walk in, the left front quarter is all the construction tools. Right front quarter is mechanic. Back left corner is the sharpening station. Back left corner is storage for paints, nails, stains, extra/overflow. Everything is on a shelf or attached to a countertop. The floor is clear unless we are building something or mechanicing on something. The cool floor is where the potatoes cure. Storage shelves are around the top for totes. We have a covered area coming off the sides like you. One section is the boys “shop” and the rest is where we park the mower, 4whellwr, and tractor.

My husband and I bought a property in 22. We had to put in infrastructure…power, water, culvert, driveway, pond, septic…. We then built his dream shop. It has a small side building attached. It will be an office and home base while we build our forever home. Listening to you talk about having a place to move stuff. It was like hearing my own words. Our shop was finished in January. We are filling it up fast. The hard part is it’s 1800 miles away. 🙄. I look forward to being there full time. Can I recommend pex, spray foam insulation and mini splits. All have worked out well for us. Oh, and get some gutters asap. We directed our water into the pond. I’m so happy for you. Keep on keeping on!
Ya we all knew you were movjng to Pecan Grove to take up residence there! SO..... are you done movng high tunnels? Will the others stay at Deep South? It seems to me youre already getting a lil scattered. Generally if youre retiring or older you are downsizing to make things easier to match health and energy. Ya all seem to be upsizing instead lol. Just my opinion but you said the butchering buiding is already getting full. ANd you keep mentioning Danny forgetting gardening tools so Id think ya need a garden toolbox that you can load and unload to bring things back and forth or to store them out by the garden or in the greenhouse. Handtools and such that you use other than tractor stuff. You could use a building to just be mechanic shop-tractor , tractor parts, tools to fix tractor and vehicles, metal working on one side and carpentry area on other side to work with and store saws and wood with a lumber and firewood storage area attached is that what this Dream Shop will be?

67 here and still dream of a few acres of land to create a little homestead. His will be done in all things.
God willing, I'm closing tomorrow on another 7.6 acres. It's 1.2 miles from my present farm. I had an urgent need to get $$out of bank and into dirt. And it was Eeasy! God's will be done!
Property around us is outrageous per acre. Happy for you
This is so exciting but I know leaving Deep South will be sad as well. Whoever is lucky enough to buy it will have a ready made home to come to. Any chance one of the grandkids will buy it and move closer to you?

Based on personal experience, I’d recommend downsizing your living quarters for a minimum of maintenance. Y’all know what’s needed for storage and company, but maybe it would help to have off grid livability. Guarantee you, you WILL be wanting ramps instead of stairs wherever possible.
For those considering something similar consider a 15 foot wrap around lean to/covered porch

Now that Danny has a REAL shop for his equipment and projects, my next leap of imagination is a REAL summer kitchen that’s enclosed by screens for food processing. The canning kitchen at DSH was a wonderful idea and good experience, but there’s something about being TOO open to the outside. I’d imagine walls something like on the high tunnel, with screens all the time and roll down weather protection.

Very nice shop building. It is so much of a blessing to be able to start with a "blank slate" and make your vision of your retirement home place a reality. My wife and I are the same age as you two and it is harder to get things done at times but we just keep going. Look forwards to seeing all of the Pecan Grove progress. Blessing to you both.

I love it! Oh there is going to be a lot of decisions to get it laid out! Question: why did you choose a black roof? I would think with your intense heat that will make your building hotter than a light color. It does look nice though.

I'm confused on what you are doing. Are you planning on selling your current place and moving to pecan. If not why do you need to keep both properties?
Yes we will sell at some point.
My Dad had big plans for when he retired, but then he got in poor health which forced him to retire (he waited until 72. He didn't have to), and it went down-hill from there. He never got to travel like he wanted. I don't know if that disappointed him or not, but yes, at some point if you have the means and you WANT to enjoy certain things, you have to take the plunge.
I hope and pray that all your dreams for the new property come true! I know that this is exciting times with all the planning and new adventures coming your way, Blessings to you both!

I been praying for God to guide me to a new place for my 79 years old Mom to live with me in the country a small town like I grew up in. She has ground already but it's too expensive to build. It's where I grew up
If the Father gives the go, you best put your running shoes on and give it the absolute best you can. Going to miss Deep South, as a Yankee that is heaven on earth to me. Growing food stuffs deeply satisfies my soul so deeply.
