    "fill the boot" is something US fire departments do every year to raise money for MDA. It all began when a group of families affected by muscular dystrophy approached Boston Firefighters Local 718 to ask professional fire fighters to help fight muscular dystrophy.

    • @RebelCowboysRVs
      @RebelCowboysRVs Час назад

      Pretty sure most fire departments hold boot drives to pay the bills of the fire department. Most of the fire departments in the country are volunteer an funded by donations. The most common way to get those funding donations has been to stand at intersections holding a boot. Usually on a holiday weekend. Though the department I worked for did it on black Friday. Seen hundreds of them an this is the first time I have heard of it being done for something other than funding the fire department.

      @@RebelCowboysRVsI’m in my 50’s and the fire fighters here have done it every year for the MDA all my life. Fire departments here are definitely not funded by fundraisers or donations etc. Tax dollars fund them and fund them very well. Definitely not volunteers either. They are highly trained professionals that are full time employees.

    • @RebelCowboysRVs
      @RebelCowboysRVs Час назад +1

      @@deadinindiana you live in a rare place in the US then. Less than 10 percent of the Fire departments in the US are full time paid departments. Not sure what the numbers are for public funding, but the ones around me only got a few hundred dollars a month of tax money outside of an election year with sales taxes on the ballot. I have been retired a while now though. The members the generation before me took out loans in their own names to buy trucks for the department.

    The "SPEED ENFORCED BY AIRCRAFT" signs are definitely real!
    If you look on the right side of the road in areas where they are doing aerial traffic enforcement, there will be a white stripe perpendicular to the road and a second one a (I can’t remember how far) distance further down the road. A pilot can use those marks and a stopwatch to calculate your speed. If that speed passes the limit, the officer in that aircraft will contact an officer on the ground with a description of your vehicle, and you'll be pulled over later down the road.
    The California Highway Patrol used to rely HEAVILY on this aircraft enforcement, but it's kind of fallen out of fashion, seeing as It wasn't very cost-effective compared to radar. It's still used in some parts of California and a lot of the more rural parts of the country.

      Back in the 80's I was driving south out of Michigan into Ohio. No cell phones at that time, just CB radios. Once I got on the interstate in Ohio, I noticed up ahead in the sky a plane that looked like it was doing one long circle pattern. Once I crossed over a rise in the road, at the Eastern end of the circle. There were 7 cars standing by to pick up any speeders. If it wasn't for the CB radio I had, I may have been one of the fish caught in the net that day.

    I have been pulled over by a plane. They clock you by how fast you travel between lines on the road and then radio down to a waiting cop car ahead of you. It's nit always in effect, it's really more of a scare tactic than anything.
    P.S. you don't want a bear anywhere near you. There is a video playing on a loop in the Yosemite visitor center of a bear just tearing apart a car trying to get at the food inside it.

I held my breath for second as you came upon the very spot where you see the mighty rocks, amazing waterfalls & El Capitan! I didn't breathe then either. God's beauty! We had our 1st camping trip (of many many more!) there...tents on platforms. We secured our food, etc as directed & even a Park Ranger came around campsite at night to check for security. However, a little bear did get inro our tent. We froze. Thankfully, he was not impressed & didn't stay long. I am surprised that you didn't drive thru the huge & magnificent red wood trees! So happy for your adventures & bringing us along. Years later my husband, kids & I camped at Lake Tahoe! But that's another awesome adventure! 😊

    I live in Fresno, California and have studied geology at California State University of Fresno so we have been to Yosemite many times.
    To answer your questions about the rocks and boulders in Yosemite National Park the rocks are not volcanic, but were formed by magma cooling under the ground and brought to the surface by uplift. Erosion through water and glaciers have formed the deep canyons. Pieces of the rocks break off the cliffs in rockslides and form the massive boulders.
    Too bad during Memorial Day weekend the pass thru Yosemite to eastern Sierra Nevada Mountains was closed and didn't open till June 10th this year. You would have had more time in Yosemite and been able to cut over the mountains and had a shorter drive to Lake Tahoe. The pass is the highest pass in the continental United States closes during the winter and most of spring because of snow. The drive is a nice scenic drive and have great views including the backside of Half Dome.
    Just coming the Central Valley area of California there are 3 National Parks and several National Forest.

Little punks breaking into cars sometimes but I'd put them around kangaroos for danger 🐻 🐻 😊 For anyone wanting to stay in Yosemite NP, make reservations 6 months before for inside or just outside the park. You mention the sheer size when at the bottom of the valley.. it looks huge when you are down in the valley, but after driving for a couple hours you find yourself on a high ridge looking down at the valley and realize those waterfalls and clifs are a very small piece at the bottom of a much larger mountian, that part was very humbling when i saw that from above because it is just so massive and you dont realize that when you are in the valley. Also you are missing out on so much, for example could have walked all the way up to the waterfall it looks 100x bigger up close. And there is an old hotel further back in the valley, from there you can walk behind it to a peaceful river with the most amazing views. Yosemite is truly an amazing place and I encourage everyone to see it at least once in your life it is pure natural beauty and words and truly not share just how awesome it is

    It is so awesome to watch your family enjoy what is America. I have been in 38 of the fifty states and I have driven all of it. No matter the state or locations, the beauty of America is always breathtaking. I have been through Yosemite on several occasions on several different routes and trips and it never gets old. You think to yourself how can it get more grand and then you are driving through the Rockies in Colorado and you are even more amazed. I agree with you, how does the human mind see so much and yet you are able to take in even more. I thank you for your videos of your exploits. They are so heartwarming and touching. Have a great adventure in these grand ole United States...

Sequoia national park is a must see.. there are 2 different groves that are mind blowing. I hope you get to see those.

    The melting snowpack is what's feeding the river rapids via all of the waterfalls. It's a shame you basically missed seeing a lot of the park since you couldn't drive through until late in the afternoon. Beautiful video! ❤

    So glad you got into the park! Many, many years ago I worked/lived in Yosemite NP. It's my favorite park! I also did some rock climbing near El Capitan. FYI: Yosemite vallley was created by glaciers. The rock is granite. My second favorite Park is Olympic NP in Washington State. I hope you love Tahoe as well beacause it is also awsome!

    Coming from flat/hot/dry central TX, my mind is blown by waterfalls! You should see the ones in Upstate NY and the NY Adirondacks. Not quite as high as the one you saw in Yosemite, but there are hundreds of them, and some are very impressive. All of them are beautiful. BTW, all of those rivers you crossed have lots of trout in them, as do the rivers in the Adirondacks. Glad y'all had a good time. Watch out for that twilight driving. Deer/elk/moose/bear are very active then, and hitting one will mess up your whole day.

    The military that patrolled the west coast, especially the northwest were warned that Sasquatch was one of the large dangerous animals in the area along with black bears and probably now wild boars. Snakes are also something to be aware of in that area. Be safe and have fun, you guys are in God's country.

    To answer your question, Yosemite Park is the result of _several_ volcanic eruptions. About every eight hundred thousand years, the massive volcano under Yosemite erupts and redraws the surface of what are now several states. It's only been around 600,000 years since the last one so we probably have plenty of time until the next one.
    (There is a cheesy BBC disaster TV movie called "Supervolcano" about it.)

    Yosemite 1997, went there with my mother. Part of a package deal. We sat down to lunch in this enormous room, ordered our meal and before the food arrived, the waiter and restaurant manager tried to tell us that our lunch was not comped. Like hell it wasn't. We pulled out documentation and they were forced to retreat, then a 5.2 quake hit. Actually felt the floor rise, then drop. My mom called it "a volcanic burp." I then came to the realization that it was possible, but not likely, to have an eruption right then and there. Scared the crap out of me.

    In the early 80's my sister came down with their camper and the kids. They were coming to have Thanksgiving and bringing me up to BC. On the way I noticed this car not slowing down while approaching the intersection we were approaching. The kids where too busy being kids as I screamed hang on! Then pointed to the car "He's not stopping!" Sister had to slam on the breaks and luckily we didn't crash, but as she did so all the kids came forward. Luckily I had calculated for this and used my arm as a 'break' of sorts supporting it against my sisters seat; this prevented two of the kids from hitting the console or windshield. You're youngen's lol Are old enough so that just knowing it's a possibility will hopefully keep them safe. Looks like they have some seatbelts on but 'an extra pair of eyes on the road' only helps! Love ya guys!
