This song was very deeply rooted in the American sentiment during the holidays when World War 2 was happening. Such uncertain times for so many families. Anytime I hear this song it reminds me of how much I have to be grateful for, my grandfather fought during WW2 and made it home to create a wonderful family. My husband did two deployments and made it home, now we have two beautiful children.

People don't remember what happened when they were 1! You were told the story so many freakin' times you fooled yourself into believing you remembered it. You are old enough to know better!!!
My cousin died in Korea when I was 6 months old. For the remainder of her life his mother paid more on a per capita basis for the defense of SK than their citizen. Nothing is as disgraceful and repugnant as such contempt for U.S. citizens. Taiwan cut their defense budget in half this year, but we are absolutely maniacal to fight China there. 'Cause Vietnam said no
The theme of the song is of a soldier serving overseas in WW II who is planning to be home with his family for Christmas. The song was written in 1943. 👍🫡
I remember visiting my grandma once during December, and putting this song on her stereo, and she started crying because it reminded her of her husband (grandpa) who tragically passed away years earlier to Parkinson’s Disease and it reminded her of him during his service in WW2. And now that she passed away 3 years ago, this song reminds me of her. Never forgotten Grandma (1932-2020)
Each time I hear this nostalgic and wondrous Christmas tune, I envision B-17s flying in formation -- contrails streaming behind them -- bright sunshine glinting slightly off Plexiglass -- crewmen on oxygen in the bombers' cockpits -- other crewmen standing at the ready behind 50 caliber machine guns. Some of them wondering if they'll survive enough missions to make it home for the next Christmas. Some might have been thinking, "Angels on both shoulders." At this Christmas time 2021, please take Time to remember those gallant guys who gave all in the skies over Fortress Europe during WWII. Remember all of our vets -- everywhere. Thanks, Bing Crosy, the accompanying musicians and vocalists. A Hopeful and Merry Christmas 2021 to one and all -- in Heaven AND on Earth.
Thank you sir. So few recall that this song was written and sang during that War. The Greatest Generation truly sacrificed all for the world's freedom. God Bless them all.
@@ronlemons5316 -- You are welcome, good sir. I had relatives who served in the US Army Air Corps and in the RAF. @@h.calvert3165 -- Many thanks. Yes, those brave souls made it possible to maintain freedom all over the world. I can only imagine how many families of allied military personnel still felt sorrow and a sense of non-closure each Christmas time following WWII. Far too many service men were never found. Their families and friends waited decades to learn of their fate and what happened to their earthly remains. After all these decades since The Second World War, some still wonder about relatives who were lost in that war. Likewise, for the countless numbers of civilians who lost loved ones during WWII. @@walterfechter8080 And to you, sir. My father was one of the few who joined the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1939 BEFORE the war started, because he just wanted a career in the R.C.A.F. So, as an Air Force brat, this war & its brave airmen, marines, sailors, & soldiers, from all the Allied countries, are very dear to me. Remembrance Day is extremely special in my home. The Greatest Generation, indeed. 👏
Mery Christmas to all the Service personnel and veterans who are spending or have spent Christmas away from home. Many never got to realize this dream. Thank you and God Bless you all.
To me being home for Christmas is reflecting back on all my past ones especially when your the youngest of your family and almost all your siblings are gone. They really are bittersweet times now, hard to look at and impossible not to. My mom loved this song and said next to white Christmas it was the biggest one during WW2..
I get so emotional when I hear this version of this song bc I know who it was written for and why it was written, and that it was written about a US soldier dreaming of coming home and peace during WWII for me this is the only version of this song that is acceptable
Don't get me wrong! Bing Crosby's version of White Christmas will always stand out! But his version of I'll Be home for Christmas really brings tears to my eyes! Every time!
Does anyone else remember the lyrics being " I'll be home for Christmas, you can count on me?" Because now every version I listen to says the word plan and everyone I asked remembers the word count.
So sad if you think about it. Written in 1943, so many nurses, doctors, soldiers, sailors, airmen and other support personnel had no idea if they'd ever have a Christmas at home again.
Since when are the lyrics 'you can plan on me' I've heard Bing Crosby sing this song 100's of times and this is the first time he didn't say you can count on me.
2nd line of the song has supernaturally changed back through time. "You can plan on me," used to be "count" and now that no longer exists. Not even on my vinyl record from the 1960s.

This tune is for the guys who made it back to their earthly homes for Christmas and for those who went on to Glory, where it's Christmas for all Eternity. Thanks to "The Greatest Generation" for ending WWII and to all of the other folks in uniform who are somewhere "out there" at the Present during Christmas Time 2024.
