How I made my Honda WX15 Water Pump 10dB Quieter.

  • I'm very happy with how this turned out. The new muffler doubles as an improved stand for the pump, and the total project added less than half a pound (~200 grams) to the weight of the pump.
To clarify the title, the measured sound at idle with the stock exhaust pointed at the camera at 12ft was 73dB, and after my modifications the measurement was 63dB. Measurements were taken with an app on my Samsung S22 Ultra that I used to film the video. Baseline sound measured in my backyard was 49dB.
At idle, and lower RPM, it seems most of the noise comes from the exhaust. My muffler was very effective at silencing this noise. However, at full throttle, a fair bit of the noise seems to be coming from mechanical engine noises from the air cooled engine, and so the drop in sound was less noticeable. I usually run my highbanker with this pump at less than 50% throttle, and so the improvements will be noticeable. Ahh the serenity :)

Great video. Jamie Lannister is talented AND Canadian, who knew?! Joking aside, i am trying to find a way to quieten my WX10. Awesome video...

Glad you liked the comment. I have read through the comments and decided to take the easy step and build an acoustic box inside my shed. Its next to the wall on the shed so my next plan is to build some kind of exhaust through the back wall (as the acoustic box is not 100% sealed, despite putting a hole in the back wall it still keeps in some of the exhuast.
My plan is to manufacture a gasket similar to whats on the exhuast and then weld a smallish pipe on to the end and run it out quite far. Nothing inside the pipe, but I am wondering if it will add much backpressure, as I have seen questions about temperature at outlet being an issue.
      Anyone have any thoughts?

A really interesting modification. I also use a WX-15 for my smaller placer equipment work and was able to really notice the difference in the stock noise level from it as compared to other manufactures of 4 strokes. This improves on that. (I noticed your pans on the work bench.)
One observation is that a tiny "weep hole" should be bored somewhere into the upper vertical tube so that if the new base discharge ends up underwater (from vibration) and the pump stops due to fuel starvation the cooling exhaust gasses will draw water back up into the engine. 🤥 The safety weep hole breaks that vacuum at a very small cost in noise.
Same sort of idea that is used for the above water portion of a retort discharge tube sitting under the water level. Miners should understand the technique easily. 😏 Now to look at your other videos since I'm subscribed now. - Joe S -

Great idea about that weep hole. I think the muffler it's self has one that would break the suction, but I'll add a tiny breather just in case. I actually made a video about a retort and was carful to use only enough water to just cover the end of the tube for the same reason you mention. It sure is a great activity this gold mining isn't it?

Most excellent, Theophillus. But before the victory lap, I suggest you stuff a K-Type thermocouple into the exhaust port and run under load with/and without the muffler rig. You don't want to be burning the exhaust valve on that sweet Honda.

Nice job. Just curious if you took the temperature of the engine prior to making the exhaust change? With the modification does the engine run hotter or cooler? Looking forward to more of your content.

I never did take the exhaust temperature before and after... I did use a pretty big exhaust tube and that frame really wont add much resistance since it's over double the size of pipe coming out of the muffler. But I'll take a test next time I'm running it just to be sure.

Just an idea for thought. Add some baffles to the upward part and should be much better then you already did.
Not to much though don't want to restrict the flow to much

Don't kill the pump seal running it dry. The mechanical seal is ceramic.

Great point! I probably should have mentioned that in the video. I did have water in the housing for these tests.

I figured why not do this as a little experiment, and if it works, then it's just one more small thing to make this summer slightly more enjoyable.

Genius Idea kills 3 birds with one stone Larger more stable foot print and platform for a pump and a muffler to boot . It is a saleable item in my books . End of the month the ice should finally be out and ice burgs melted and start your shovels till the June monsoons and high water
