I cant wait for the day im that experienced and hopefully at ease with driving! Glad to know from sn experienced driver this guy is giving good advice x
What a brilliant, down to earth and practical post. I drove alone on the motorway today for the first time, from Sheffield to Retford and your videos helped me immensley as ive only been passed a couple weeks. Thankyou!
I’m nearly 30 and have had a driving licence for over ten years. I’ve never had the confidence to drive on a motorway and have actually never needed to as my husband usually drives long distances. This is really helpful, thank you.
Just discovered your channel 2 days ago. Passed it on to my son He has just passed his test in a diesel car. He now has a Petrol car and for the first time out in it he kept stalling. Tried again the next day, same thing happened. His frustration was clear. Then I found your videos on stalling and everything else related to new drivers He was so pleased with your channel he contacted you! And bless you! You replied Thank you so much, these are the best driving videos I’ve seen. Kind regards from a very Happy Mum 😊
I am happy you and your son have come across the stalling videos and the playlist for new drivers. There must me thousands of new drivers in the same position. Thank you again for watching.
I drove on motorway for first time yesterday was so nervous but practice makes perfect. Your videos are so reassuring and helpful to watch before journeys. Thank you
Thanks, Travis. Your videos have been a major help for me while learning to drive. I have just passed my test today with 2 minors. Now the real learning begins!!!
I passed my test 4 weeks ago and i have been driving since but today i went on motorway and it was such an experience for me , first time i was driving in such speed ! I am pretty happy i did it ! It was scary a bit but it was ok , really ok !
😂hmmm. .. started watching this video and reading the messages i saw yours while i was thinking the same thing... everyone who watches these you tube driving instructors to pay them at least 1h , it would be a huge help and recognition for what they are doing for new beginners as normally most instructors face to face don't explain in more details/ depth as they do 😢😊
Thank you 🙂 I passed in March, I'm going to drive from Halifax to Blackpool for the first time this week. Very nervous but also excited to finally have the freedom with driving instead of relying on trains
This was so good! Thank you so much, was looking for a video like this for a while. I passed 2 years ago but still nervous to drive on the motorway, I’ve recently moved away from home (Manchester) and am trying to get the confidence to drive back and visit instead of getting the train so it was nice to get some tips from a fellow northerner!
I've been driving for nearly 5 years now, and I've never been on a Motorway. In fact, I'll happily add extra miles to my journey to avoid them. But the day has finally come and I'm going to be driving down to Worthing (from Merseyside) which will take me about 4 hours to get to and this journey, of course, means Motorway. Anyway, after watching this, I definitely feel more relaxed and at ease about it, and I know that when I'm back home I'll be a much more confident driver. P.S, I'm also bringing a second driver so we can take turns.
Thank you so much. I recently took a wrong turn and went onto a motorway, but thanks to this video, I knew what to look for to get off at the next exit and when to signal and when to decelerate.
I passed my test early this year, the idea of driving on the motorway was daunting. I've been driving on the mway for the past 5 months almost daily now ; it's not hard at all. You just gotta put yourself in that situation, bring someone with experience if that helps.
It was good to refresh my memory on motorway driving watching this video. I had a motorway lesson a couple of months ago with my instructor in his new Honda Jazz which was fun to drive and the extra power helped with overtaking etc with it being the new 1.5 Honda Jazz. I live an hour from the motorway so I had a 3 hour lesson on the motorway but we stopped at a services for a coffee break after about an hour and a half so it wasn’t too bad. I haven’t driven on the motorway since that day but I should be ok when I do get an opportunity to drive on the motorway on my own
I was lucky I had a friend who taught me how to drive on the UK motorway. Driving instructors never teach this. Driving on the motorway has become fun. What scares me is actually driving in the cities.
I passed my test on the 30th June 2016. Picked my car up on the 11th July 2016 and drove for the first time on a motorway on the 17th July 2016. I only drove up a few junctions and did it on a Sunday evening. I've now driven to London Weston super mare and Blackpool on the motorway along with a lot more journeys on the motorway which were not as long distance wise
Learn-to-drive Travis thanks I think so too. I am off to Blackpool again next month. I have spent a lot of time over the last few years as a passenger on the motorway going all over the country. I've always been looking out of the window and being observant of what's going on more so when I was learning to drive so that helped me a lot
This is so helpful so much you haven’t learned yet when passing your test. My worst fear having to pull up on hard shoulder alone but least I have the knowledge to stay calm and safe if it ever happens before it does Good to know about the speed needing to change faster in and out of services ahead of time - I have an EV so I’ll have to use them for charging if I do a long journey Not worth getting done for speeding ever in first 2 years- better to get there later with no points than trying to avoid cameras
Another great video full of very helpful advice Travis! The problem with Australian drivers is that everyone tailgates which makes it nearly impossible to merge or change lanes!
Part of the problem is people seem to get so uptight and nervous. Everyone chill out! its a long straight road, just like on this very good video. Its far easier than driving through a city centre and id say GENERALLY (not always), the other drivers are good at looking out for each other on motorways and behaving predictably (normally, not always)
I’ve been driving for nearly 20 years & I always stick to the left lane……..I very rarely have the confidence to overtake…….really great videos it’s got me to really refocus on the basics as I’m guilty of slight complacency
Watched a lot of your videos yesterday and this morning and third time lucky, I passed with 4 minors but did it very comfortable and with minimum stress as well as a lot of practise in the past while. Thanks a million from your Irish fan!
I passed my driving test on Monday, I'm not scared so much of speed, I'll do 60/70 down a duel carriageway without issues, and I'll overtake things. I am doing my first motorway trip in the morning, yes just 3 days after my test, I am a little nervous but I live in North Devon and you can't get out of North Devon without going on a motorway so needs must, taking the mother with me for advice and help, so I'm ready for next time when I adventure out on my own

I passed my test on Tuesday and you're videos really helped so a big thank you! Obviously I hadn't been looking for moterway tuition until now but this is just what I needed this is great👍

I'm doing my automatic intense driving lessons next month! :D (Yes, automatic lol)...And your videos are a BIG help! Gets me prepared and an idea on what to expect! :)
@@JamesTravis I did it I drove from Dagenham to braintree using m11 and A20. Really nervous at first it I stayed in the slow lane mostly. Thank you very much
Can you please explain what you do at each count down marker for when you want to come off and join the slip road? And which gear do you recommend to go in when you’re on the slip road?
Hi, the 3 stripe marker is a prompt, a count down to exit onto slip road. At the 3 stripes i check the mirrors to see what is happening behind and around me, then start a signal to exit. I continue at the same speed as I go past the marker 2 and marker 1, also checking mirrors to make sure nothing is changing. As I enter the slip road(deceleration lane), I start to reduce the speed. I would still be in 5th gear as I enter slip road, but would drop to 3 or 2 as my speed reduces towards end.
Thanks for all the videos and tips mate, passed first time with 2 minors today one of which was doing 30 in a 40 road as I was unsure, however held my nerve throughout. Thank you!
At 9:00 when joining the motorway from service station you said you have less time to get on and you need to build speed up quickly, do you skip gears or you go through 3,4,5 within that short time? I know when slowing down your can skip gears but is that the case when building speed quickly?
Avoid skipping gears if you want to build up speed up quickly. Decent amount on the gas pedal and make good use of the rev range (for example say you normally shift up at 2-3k rpm you would want to shift at 5-6k rpm for better acceleration)
On a Smart Motorway, where the hard shoulder is a live lane. and there is a sign on the overhead gantry showing a speed limit over the hard shoulder. Were you are in the traditional lane 1, are you able to cross the solid white line of the hard shoulder to join the traffic on the hard shoulder, or should you wait until you see a broken line before moving over? - Also where the speed limit changes on the gantry, does the speed limit apply from the point you pass the sign (as with normal roads)?
Hi Travis! I have a question around the 9:46 mark. When you were moving from lanes 3 to 2 you made sure you were past the hgv in lane 1 before changing lanes. Would you do the same thing if it were a car/ smaller vehicle in lane 1 or would it be ok to change lanes alongside them? Hope that makes sense 😂 Thanks!
Fantastic video. I did notice that the dash cam is a little bit faster than your face cam. It's only really a matter of editing it so that they're up to speed with each other next time, but would definitely make your videos even better. Keep up the good work, I'm sure these will be great help when I start in a few weeks time.
Please do driving on a motorway at night. This is going to become quite relevant in my life in the near future. Also Travis, I wanted to ask, is touching the steering wheel, whilst getting into the driver's seat, count as a fail?
Thanks Travis! :) I wasnt sure if it applied to cars aswell as lorries. Thank you for that. I feel peace of mind. Keep up the great videos and if you can do a Motorway at night that would be excellent, as some of my travelling in the future will involve some night time driving to Wales. :)
Hi, i know you keep left if not overtaking, but if you come up behind traffic in middle or inside lane, they are not overtaking anyone, do you have to move to the left if space is available? My thoughts are that you are keeping up with traffic in front so no, and if you did that just means car behind will simply take your place in line of traffic alongside you so you then get trapped in the left hand lane if you need to overtake further on.
If you are in the middle lane and catch up with traffic in front of you, then either they move over to the left and let you pass or you move to the right and over take them. If the car in the middle lane or right lane is hogging the lane at a slower speed and the left lane is clear, then that is illegal for that car to do that and if caught by police would incur a fine.
@@JamesTravis yep, so I should not be expected to move left because I am not overtaking something, just wait for them to get out of the way? Had some debates on another page about it, claiming someone was lane hogging even though they were simply going at pace of car in front of them.
Got few questions just watched this video and I will be driving motorway first time very soon. 1. If your joining motorway and ur coming from left slip road and there doesn't seem be room on the right even after signaling should you carry on driving on left hard shoulder until there enough room to join? 2. When your driving in the motorway and your changing lanes from left to middle to right or the opposite way should u indicate at all times? 3. I know your supposed drive on left lane when you can however all three lanes is the maximum speed 70mph unless sign says otherwise? 4. You mentioned you can stay in left lane of motorway if you want to so does that mean you likely have be driving around 60-70 mph just in case lorry ahead of me? 5. As this video from 2017 u mentioned smart motorways is there any major changes I should be aware of if so you got any good links? Good small videos for beginners so well done and keep up the good work
The answers to your questions: 1. If for whatever reason you cannot join onto the motorway because it is crammed full of cars, then slow down and expect to stop at the end of the slip road where the giveaway line is. 2. Always signal to change lanes. 3. Smart motorways are still being rolled out .
@@JamesTravis thank you for answering my questions. Do you mind giving me response to my question 3 and 4. Regarding smart motorway what is the main difference compared to how it is normally?
@@YasirKhan-cy3zu when the motorway is very busy, at that point they will switch the hard shoulder to the running lane(this becomes the new left lane). But be carful for anyone that has just broken down in that lane. As soon as the highway agency spots a broken down car in the lane they will close the lane with a red X ❌ above lane. You must move out of that lane.
Good driving. Unlike some "experts" who cannot count two seconds on the two second rule. What's your opinion on passing on left, also called undertaking, and why do instructors never mention it on their videos?
+Nineteen Sixteen thank you for your comments. I wouldn't like to undertake a driver, so dangerous. On a motorway or dual carriageway I would avoid undertaking on the left at all costs in free flowing traffic. When other drivers undertake on you for no reason apart from them rushing to get to their destination, you don't expect it.
Learn-to-drive Travis I think it's more dangerous to drive all the way around a hogger who is in lane 3 (6 lane changes) than to pass on inside. I would never ever change lanes to either side without checking all my mirrors including my convex mirrors well in advance. Motorists should be able to read the road from behind as much as in front. So again, is it legal for me to pass a slower moving vehicle doing 50mph on it's inside? It is not an offence to drive alongside another vehicle on my right, yet according to some people it's illegal for me to move forward to let myself be seen by the hogger.
+bhaskar samani if the motorway is busy and no gaps appear, which could happen in rush hour or if there has been an accident further up the motorway then slowing down to give way is something that you would need to consider. But outside these situations I have never been unable to find a gap.
There will always be a gap. the drivers on the motorway will see you and moderate their speed to allow you in. they might even move lanes. Theyre not OBLIGED to do this, but majority of the time they will
Siyani Saj it's easy all you have to do is go straight and keep observations when changing lane for overtaking I went today for the first time with my dad and found it easy
Please make a video about smart motorway, that says that speed limit is now 60 or 50 , but when should I come back normal national speed limit, please show that back to normal position
I just passed my test and I was looking at what to expect on the motorway - I found your video really helpful! Thanks for explaining in such detail and giving some helpful tips! I’ll look forward to watching more food videos cheers 👍
Great video,, was daunting going onto the motorway for the first time a few months after I passed. Definite think there needs to be some motorway driving in the lessons before you're allowed to take a test. Instructor can decide when you're at the required skill level. But then again the test is only just getting a slight modern revamp now so I wont hold my breathe =p
Ben Tennyson na not really bro I just went on motorway today for the first time with my dad and found it easy as all you have to do is go straight and keep observations when changing lane for overtaking
What do you do if you’ve moved to lane 3 to overtake a vehicle in lane 2, but then the vehicle in lane 2 speeds up above speed limit and there’s other cars in lane 2 blocking you from coming back in ? Do you let them undertake you so there’s a gap you can move back into? Or would it just be best to go over the speed limit just briefly to get ahead and back over to lane 2 and eventually lane 1?
If the car in lane 2 has increased speed making it impossible for you to overtake without breaking speed limit, just let them pass you and show a left signal and move back to the left when it is safe to do so.
I passed my test last year at 40 something, and now drive on dual carriageway & motorway daily. Your videos helped a lot. When I am driving on fast roads, I tend to grip the wheel and hate changing lanes on any sort of a bend as I feel out of control (even at 55 ish MPH) . On the routes I take this is largely unavoidable. Any tips? TVM.
Hi, I don’t tend to change lanes on bends, can be tricky, leave it for the straight roads to change lanes. You probably already do this but give yourself time and check the blind spot on a lane change, also like you are commenting about driving at 55mph, Driving at this speed will help you to cope with the pressure of a lane change. After I passed the driving test it was a few years before I felt really comfortable with what I was doing on the roads, there were plenty of times when I felt uneasy, but experience and time improved that. Keep working at it.
Thank you for taking the time to respond. I used the tips from your video today which helped. I had never considered the blind spot of others' or LHD vehicles before. More consideration in future. Thanks again.

As I enter the slip road(deceleration lane), I start to reduce the speed. I would still be in 5th gear as I enter slip road, but would drop to 3 or 2 as my speed reduces towards end.
Thanks for the video, straight to the point.
+rutter1ify thanks
The camera footage is slightly out of sync so at 11:55 i thought you were going to hit the car😅
I went on the M1 two weeks after I passed my test I was really scared mostly of lorries, slip roads and changing lanes
It can be a bit nervy at first
These smart motorways tho, crazy decision at least they made it safer by adding lay bys but amount of fatalities because of them
Thanks for your helpful videos I passed today with 2 faults.
+Thomas congratulations on passing
+Thomas congratulations on passing and thank you
i pass my driving test 4 yr ago but toady i bought my frist car .and this video help me alot.
Excellent
Thanks for all the videos and tips mate, passed first time with 2 minors today one of which was doing 30 in a 40 road as I was unsure, however held my nerve throughout. Thank you!
Congratulations and safe driving
👍👍👍 real good info there
Glad it was helpful!
I passed my test couple weeks ago in wellingborough. Great help mate
Excellent
At 9:00 when joining the motorway from service station you said you have less time to get on and you need to build speed up quickly, do you skip gears or you go through 3,4,5 within that short time? I know when slowing down your can skip gears but is that the case when building speed quickly?
+Ibra H great question. I would go 3,4,5 up gears.
Avoid skipping gears if you want to build up speed up quickly. Decent amount on the gas pedal and make good use of the rev range (for example say you normally shift up at 2-3k rpm you would want to shift at 5-6k rpm for better acceleration)
Ibra H I go 1st 2nd 4th 5th to build up speed
This is when an automatic is easier to drive - you just put your foot down till you get to the appropriate speed
Neil Macaskill not true just redline 2nd and your at about 55-60 then go 4th when joining and 5/6th once your on
On a Smart Motorway, where the hard shoulder is a live lane. and there is a sign on the overhead gantry showing a speed limit over the hard shoulder.
If the smart lane is open, then you can cross line. The new speed limit applies after you pass the gantry sign.
Yes because of they might change lanes into 2 without looking
Thank you. Great vid!! 👌👍❤️

Fantastic video. I did notice that the dash cam is a little bit faster than your face cam. It's only really a matter of editing it so that they're up to speed with each other next time, but would definitely make your videos even better. Keep up the good work, I'm sure these will be great help when I start in a few weeks time.
+Daniel Sudds I did spot that on editing and left it in so it could be seen as a delayed thing. Thank you for comment and thanks for watching

Please do driving on a motorway at night. This is going to become quite relevant in my life in the near future. Also Travis, I wanted to ask, is touching the steering wheel, whilst getting into the driver's seat, count as a fail?
+Steveus Neo hi, you have to get into the car so using the steering wheel to help you get onto your car is fine.
This was so helpful and reassuring..thankyou.
+Amy Bell happy it helped you. Safe driving
Good small videos for beginners so well done and keep up the good work
The answers to your questions:
@@JamesTravis thank you for answering!. Are all three lanes of the motorway maximum speed of 70mph unless the signs says otherwise?
Is there a video of when to overtake a bus? I find it difficult sometimes because I don’t know when the bus will indicate
+RH Starman I have not got a video on overtaking buses unfortunately
Learn-to-drive Travis ok
Thank you for the vids, recently passed but the learning never ends
What do you do if you get to near the end of the slip road and can't join the motorway because you couldn't find a gap?
+bhaskar samani if the motorway is busy and no gaps appear, which could happen in rush hour or if there has been an accident further up the motorway then slowing down to give way is something that you would need to consider. But outside these situations I have never been unable to find a gap.
There will always be a gap. the drivers on the motorway will see you and moderate their speed to allow you in. they might even move lanes. Theyre not OBLIGED to do this, but majority of the time they will
I passed 2 years and I've not been on motorway yet 🙈🙈
Siyani Saj it's easy all you have to do is go straight and keep observations when changing lane for overtaking I went today for the first time with my dad and found it easy
4 years for me never been on one.
Same like me I have motorway anxiety. Even if I c one I’m just so scared not of anything else but I’m scared i might cause an accident
Motorways are apparently the safest way to drive but at high speeds I find it hard to believe.
You are really good at explaining
Thank you for your kind comment. Safe driving
Excellent best video you know what your talking about I just learned what’s the left lane use for thanks
Thank you
Eyyy northampton thats where i live.
Please make a video about smart motorway, that says that speed limit is now 60 or 50 , but when should I come back normal national speed limit, please show that back to normal position

Video is really helpful thank you for the advice
Happy to help
Your the man T six months in on passing xx. Q is it against the law to keep the R plates up after your first year on passing your test ???
Spanish Autopistas are so much nicer then our ageing motorways. They have less traffic, and little rest spots every now and then.
Sound lovely
I have been driving for about 11 years and still scared of driving on motorway 😟🙈
They can be a bit scary
Great video,, was daunting going onto the motorway for the first time a few months after I passed. Definite think there needs to be some motorway driving in the lessons before you're allowed to take a test. Instructor can decide when you're at the required skill level. But then again the test is only just getting a slight modern revamp now so I wont hold my breathe =p
+holix x I agree, there is talk at moment of motorway lessons in the next couple of years. Thanks for feedback
If you suspect you are going the wrong direction Junction Numbers increase as you travel away from London. Not all motorways relate to London though.
I passed my test 14th june 2012 and I'm terrified of motorways.
Amazing explanation ....thanks for an amazing instructor 😊
I passed in august 2017 still aint been on the motorway lol
Good luck when you do go on
