My grandmother lived in Mexico, would get strips of muslin whatever was available, pull out strips as long as she could to crochet or sewing 🧵! She taught my mom how to do the same when she was old enough, she’d sit by hurricane lamp to do it or maybe kerosene! We’ve come a long way advancing!😊
wow! that is remarkable and super resourceful!! Thank you for sharing that with us :)
She had an amazing yearning for creativity.
Very pretty ❤
What I meant to say was get strips to make thread to sew
I was just thinking that a glue gun would be the go
I was born in 1940. All babies wore bonnets…I remember two I had, so I must have been 3, or 4 to recall them. 1 was mid blue and the other was wine coloured.
I think making separate ties is better because that would help tighten the whole hat rather than just around the face. Only speculating. Love these vintage patterns.
Very beautiful work, time consuming but the lacy look is so beautiful and no one in todays world works like this. I reborn dolls, If I were you I would buy a pretty baby doll and use it for showing your work. Very nice! I was born in 44 so my baby era but I'm certain I never wore a bonnet like this one. I learned to crochet from my mom in law whom I loved dearly. But I can't work with this type, arthritis in hands and fingers I could not hold the tension unfortunately. Ah, you are talking getting a baby doll. For booties it's hard to fit their feet because too small but the fully silicone babies have large feet, more the size of a real baby. Learners was a popular store back in the day, like Shillitos and McAlpins, Jcpennys. Not sure I spelled it right, long time ago, but that is what the name was.🤗🤫👣
I was born in 1941 - my granddaughter is about to have her second baby, so I think it wold be fun to make a version of this for our new little one. Thank you for your beautifully clear tutorials.
I would sew beautiful little pearl buttons in the center of the rosettes. I think that would be so adorable.
I'm going to make this, already crocheted a baby vintage christening gown 👍🏽 this will totally complete the outfit 😊
Wonderful!! 🤗
My mom's grandmother made me that exact bonnet with matching booties, a receiving blanket, and a sweater (mind hit a blank as to what it's called because it wasn't a coat). It was all fuzzy pink and white. My mom wasn't able to use it on me after I was born because I was born a month premature (my birth date was supposed to be February 6, 1971 but I was born January 6, 1971.) She was able to use the set after I hit 4 months. I did get to use the set with all 4 of my girls (1st born January 13, 1993, 2nd born May 28, 1995, 3rd born January 31, 1998 and 4th born April 9, 2000). Sadly, they were the last I was able to use that set with because 1) it finally fell apart, and 2) I have only grandsons. It was so well made that it lasted through 5 baby girls (myself and my 4 daughters). I absolutely love your vintage patterns.
I think the reason for cutting ribbon between woven bit and ties is less risk of causing the bonnet to become misshapen by over cinching too tight when tying it under the babies chin or from cinching tight if the baby pulls on it.
The reason they had the trim separate from the ties is that when the baby drools and stains the ties, you can replace them. Like you, I don't have a baby in my life, my son is grown but, this would make a beautiful baby shower gift.
I'm SO excited for more vintage baby clothes! I love crocheting baby outfits because they work up so fast and are always so rewarding. Thanks for posting this video! I'm a little scared to try crochet thread since anything in a fine weight yarn will take me a decade and a half to complete 😅
I hear ya! Maybe you will change your mind after you watch the video 🤗
I hear you also 😂
just an idea, but instead of half a pearl you could sew on a nice pearl button. I'm a bit particular to gluing stuff on clothing, so you could also use it to sew on the bow with the button. Anyways, thank you for sharing this super cute project - will definitely try. There are always new babies in the family :)
That's a great idea!
I'm with you on the glue business, its temporary in my opinion as the glue perishes and just doesn't have the finesse
I have this pattern in my gramma’s crochet pattern book called “The Best of Crochet”
And I have crocheted this hat in baby yarn!
Hello,
Oh this is so cute, I love it. You did a fantastic job on this tutorial. Thank you so much 🙂
The ribbon that is tied under the chin is added separately because it keeps the whole ribbon from pulling down or cinching over the face, when tied.
Ohh, that makes so much sense! Thank you 😊
@@justvintagecrochet ☺You're welcome.
I was thinking the same thing, though I think the same effect would be achieved by sewing at the edge without having to have separate pieces of ribbon.
Exactly, adelacoburn1396 ...
The beginning rounds of this would also be lovely as a start to a doily.
Agree 100% !!
And if you crochet like I do, the whole bonet will look like a doily!
I sew baby bonnets to sell at church for girls to get used to veil! I am making this crocheted one but the center ended up being 7 inches instead of 5 inches, and it looks more like a doily! 😆 So I am fixing it.
This has to be one of the most adorable patterns you have made, its absolutely gorgeous and not that difficult. The marker placement and magic loop decisions were spot on. Thank you for these great videos.
The bonnet is beautiful. I'm not sure my patience would survive using that small a hook and thread.
I was thinking a little pearl would be a pretty finishing touch, but you make a good point about not using one for baby’s safety. I have a large doll that this looks like it would fit, so this is added to my project list.
Not sure if I will ever make this but it was fun and interesting to watch you. It came out so gorgeous. Excited to see the 70’s poncho because that’s my era. Thanks for bringing back all these forgotten patterns.
Thank you so much! that pattern will be up very soon, im nearly half done with the poncho as we speak :)
Just my thought, if you use the ribbon that you wove as the tie also it could pull out or warp the shape of the bonnet. Separate sewn on ties eliminate that problem 😊
The reason for sewing the ribbon and then attaching ties is so the baby can't pull out the long piece of ribbon and possibly choke themselves with it. By having cut and sewing the ribbon multiple times there isn't even one long enough to get wrapped around the baby's neck.
Just about to finish this beautiful bonnet! Your video and explanations were so helpful. I really appreciate the little tips such as the alternative picot stich. It's like I'm learning in real time from friend sitting right beside you. Thank you for sharing your talents. I will give this bonnet to my neice or maybe keep for a child of my own in the future. Blessings ❤
I love this vintage crochet bonnet!! Not sure I could crochet such fine cotten though! For one thing, my eyesite would let me down...
That is so sweet! I have a pic somewhere of me in a crochet bonnet & coat that my Mother made for me when I was a little over one year old! You did your usual clear and detailed tutorial to make this simple for all of us! I wonder if the slip stitches and chains around the bottom edge are intended to limit the stretch. I 💕 thread crochet! Thank you so much!
Thank you so much, Rosemary :)
and you may be on to something there !! hmm :)
I’ve made this bonnet and it’s beautiful 😊, I’m looking forward to making it again now 😊
Wonderful! so glad to hear it :)
Would like to do this bonnet for my new great grandson due in Octobers
I imagine since this is meant to be an heirloom that it is important to be able to change out the ribbon for the next baby if it gets stained. Mine turned out gorgeous by the way! This is a pattern I will make often.
That's a very interesting point!
Beautiful bonnet. I would have done the ribbon the same way you did as it makes more sense. Thanks for sharing.
Adorable!
Beautiful!!! 😍😍😍👏👋
Your vintage work is beautiful! I would love to see you do flapper hats I love them
Thank yo so much! I actually do have a few I intend to make on the channel :)
AWESOME!
Beautiful!
My thread is olive colour, this is so much fun rn !
I have been making bonnets for a week - This one is going to be extra special xx
This may be my favorite video of yours.❤
My mom was an expert at crochet and was an expert at baby bonnets and delicate sweaters. She also made a lot of old French Canadian patterns that were passed down in her family, as well as some early American ones.
Have you tried making antique or vintage patterns for clothes for antique dolls?
Can't wait for your next video!
I have not tried that yet, but I did pick up some patterns, just just need the right dolls :)
Very impressive and inspiring 😊
Thank you! 😊
Stunning!
Beautiful..
Love the design !! So cute
That is just so beautiful !!! Love the design on back and hood
That is beautiful!! What a great job you do interpreting those old patterns and making them. I love this channel. Thank you. 😊
Thank you so much :)
Beautiful bonnet. I will do the ribbon the same way you did. It makes more sense.
What a beautiful bonnet for a Christening ❤
Very precious bonnet ❤ wonderful and fun tutorial!
I am in awe of how you work that tiny “yarn”! I would love to be able to do this bonnet, but my eyes are just not that good. I enjoy your content. I would never be able to be as calm as you (or be as censored) if I was trying to crochet with thread!!!😂🎉
Thank you so much!
This bonnet is way too cute for words
Just found your page.and love the mystery crochet.
Just beautiful!!❤
Thank you 😊
Oh wow! This is just so beautiful! Two of my sisters are pregnant at the same time right now and due within two weeks of each other. One is having a girl. I might try this pattern. I would need to get that 1.75 mm hook. I don't work with thread much. Great work! 😍
That is awesome! :)
I finally found out what the bonnets of that time looked like. I just finished reading a novel a few days ago. In that book there was men and women with beautiful and simple life of the people of England in 1818 and how good and righteous people were at that time. And a very popular way for girls to earn money was sewing and making bonnets In that book every women Knows How to Sew And they called that quilt Everyone Make their bonnets bedshits And they had a tradition That everyone in there will Make her marriage quilt , there strugles And simple farming life Some people known as Friends Always stood for the right thing And Their happy simple farming life but I couldn't match the bonnet specifications in the book to the bonnets I found online until finally I came across your channel today and it felt like I was in 1850 England again but I couldn't find out what Is Church's Friends Community ? When I searches on mobile it Showed what church shows about friendship friend meaning etc But doesn't match from what I have read but Really After Watching Your video I can Spend my hole Day Imagining those days women In A bonnet , Babys in a Hand made cradel , Corn mush for breakfast, Ohio star quilt , Gingham dresses , Simple foods like bread and ham only , Poor or middle class buying Broken biscuits And Bones because they are cheaper , Sweet heart warming and pure love story Far more better than Todays lustfull relationship , Picking Fruits from Forest , Harvesting oats , Giving titles according to their job those who make hay They have Titles like Judice haymaker , No orphans in the street Because every city had orphanage asylum And They Took great care And provide security And Love to them , boats in the canals , Stew , liberty bodice and Many more This books Gives calmness to heart Those simple And beautiful life Filled with love and emotion with lots of Love From India❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
The baby bottle you made is so beautiful amazing job God bless you❤
Thanks for making a pattern seem “doable “! I would never have attempted this before but now I feel like I might be able to do it! This would be a stunning Baby Dedication bonnet!
You’re so welcome and thank for that 🤗
Thank You for such a good video!
Thank you :)
Id love to enlarge this for an adult lol its so cute
This is adorable. I enjoyed watching you make it. Thank you.
Thank you! 😊
Yeah!!! Thank you so much!!! I can’t believe you did this! I LOVE IT!
Thank you 🤗🤗
@@justvintagecrochet ♥️♥️♥️
You make it look easy! Thanks for posting. Love all the videos so far.
Thank you so much 🤗🤗
Thank you! I just completed the bonnet, and it's absolutely lovely! I appreciate your teaching style. Now I'm off to crochet the Titanic Irish Lace handbag :)
Wonderful!
Corrina ... Your work is wonderful! ....
As a Very long-time crocheter ... ( I'm OLD now ), lol ...
Go with this ...
"When in doubt, check the picture, or diagram".
You'll find that just as aften as the pattern is reading just right, you'll get another that has been messed up in the transcribing.
So the question of wher to put the DC after the ch 3 can be seen in the photo ...
I hope this helps ... 😉
Very beautiful ❤
Thank you! 😊
Thank you❤awesome 😊
You’re very welcome 🤗
This is so cute and very doable. I would put mine in a frame. Thank you
That is such a neat idea! And thank you 😊
Thank you soooooooo much for this.
You are so very welcome 🤗
@@justvintagecrochet Thank you for putting this up so quickly. I have been looking for one in thread for awhile and there are none. I'm sure you will have so many new people joining you soon. Love it. Watching it now and then I will make one later today. Have to finish up a top I'm making, since I keep the pattern in my head. Thank you again.
@@judyoliveira3232 thank you so much for that ☺️, more to come 😁
I love this. I actually still have my very first doll that I got for my first Christmas that this would be perfect for. Now to find a vintage pattern for a dress.
Wonderful!
Grazie.
Thank you so much 🥰🥰
Beautiful. I want to make this real bad.
It really took no time at all, had it done in a day , would have been faster but I have to film rather than just crocheting lol
That was awesome! Thank you. I'm looking for a crochet poodle lipstick holder. My mother used to make them but have not been successful in finding the pattern as I remember it.
I work in theater, and we have two prop baby dolls to play infants. I guess one of them is getting a new bonnet(and I'll make 1970s baby poncho for another)
Also you could glue a little flower or a button in the center of the rosette.
Really cute hat though...
it really is! I love this pattern
Beautiful Hat. I know u said don't come at u for using hot glue. But after u did All that hard work. And then to use hot glue just didn't do it for me. But I do love it. Happy Crafting. From all the way over here in the UK 🇬🇧🇬🇧
Thank you so much 😊
i want to make one for myself lol
Love your baby hat.
The Rosettes were ment to be bigger as they accented the babies cheeks. If you can find a better quality ribbon that is so after your Rosettes will work out much nicer. I have a hat making book somewhere but, can’t find it. I think these rosettes are in it.
If I can get a print of these instructions I would attempt to make this for a big momma doll from the 1920s.
I wore one of these made by my mother or her sister. I was born in 1949.
This is for uswho have a hard time with working with fine thread I use a magnifier that hangs from my neck and it has been very useful. They can be found in most craft stores. In the begining it took some getting used to. Hope this is some help.
Why didn’t you try to crochet a small rose or rosette, in my opinion that would like nicer ⁉️( more vintage)
more vintage than what they have in the pattern? , I just copied the same style rosette as they use , mine just looks a little different, besides, this is just the way I made them, you are free to make them as you prefer , that's what's great about these tutorials, yuo can get the jist of the pattern and make it your own with your own style and touch
❤❤❤
I was sad when I saw the hot glue gun come out! Sewing it on would have stuck to the vintage of the pattern. I'm going to make this and Im going to sew the flowers on. that way the lace wont get messed up. where the flowers go on. or discolor.... Its so beautiful!!!!
The reason is to keep the cap a certain shape and not gather every time you tie it. By stitching it in place stops it from moving. Then you can tie it as tight or loose as you need and the gather stays in place kim Australia 🇦🇺
Wow, that's tiny thread and hook. I'd need bifocals AND a magnifying glass 😅 Would love to try this though...
The Baby Hat is so Adorable! You are definately inspiring me to buy a steel hook and some cotton and have a go. Your work is lovely. Any suggestions for the first hook to buy? Thanks for sharing x
Thank you so much! , my best advice, go on Ebay and find a seller selling a bunch of diff sizes of steel hooks for a real bargain ! , I found a great deal on there, got 22 vintage steel hooks for only $20 :)
@@justvintagecrochet love ebay so that should be good fun for me. Thank you x
@@tinabarwick4143 oh I do too lol
I made this years ago. I was pregnant and wanted a girl, so I made it up with a vergated punk silk yarn. Made the baby dress to match. Turned out beautiful! Unfortunately, I had twin boys..lol..love them, but... Years later, 11 years, I was pregnant again and hoped to use the set for her...turned out to be a boy again. So, gave the set to a friend that had a girl.
Darn it! Pink yarn..lol..fat fingers..
When you tied the satin bow accent, keep the center string long and tie it on the side.
No sew [and better than the glue gun]
The glue will prevent the strings from being pulled through to tighten the straps around the babies chin.
if you look at how they have you apply the stings, they were never meant to pull and cinch the cap to begin with, first they have you cut 15" piece of ribbon and weave it in and sew it in place, they cut 2 more smaller pieces and sew them to each end to be used as the ties ( not a drawstring) , then use the rest of the ribbon to create the rose which is to be sewed through the 15" initial ribbon and each tie string, so as you can see the ribbon was never meant to be a drawstring, and if you make the bonnet you will see that there is no reason to draw it closed or cinch it , its very small and a prefect fit
😍
🤗
How would you adjust this to make it an adult size? ❤
To make the rosettes you need to twist the petals completely around.
Thank you , this is just how I made them , but that does not make it the rule :) , everyone is free to make the roses anyway they prefer :) , I never made ribbon roses before , so I did my beginner best at it
When in doubt check the photo.
I couldn't find 20 crochet thread used 10 and1.5mm hook guess it'll fit 12 to 18 months.
Any recommended size hook and yarn to make pattern for an adult sized head? (18-22”) This was incredibly cute. Refraining from going rouge is tough sometimes 😊
I have only made this once, but my best advice is to just experiment, start a #4 worsted weight and the recommended hook size on the yarn and see how it fits , I hope it works out 🤗
If you don't sew down the ties the bonnet will have a tendency to bunch when you tie it on
Agreed 🤗
My friend is having a baby and I want to make this for her baby girl, but which thread to use is the problem, because I'm from Brazil, and here we use different ways to refer to yarns and threads... But I'm gonna try to find a thread good for a 1,50mm hook and try my best!
update: tried using a bit thicker material (a baby wool) that is thin but not as thin as your thread, so it's getting a bit bigger as I go... I may end up using this bonnet myself LOL
I am searching for vintage lace gloves pattern, put the only I found are too narrow for my hands and/or poorly explained, did you have some pattern in your stack or vintage crochet pattern?
I have a tutorial on my other channel, its a multi part tutorial, Here is a link to part 1 , on that channel you will find mostly my own designs , but some vintage , then I decided to separate vintage from my designs :) ruclips.net/video/2KLS5jxWmeA/видео.html
@@justvintagecrochet oh thank you so much, I watch it right know 😊😊
Do you have anything for boys from year 1923?
I do, I will be making a lot of video just for the men and boys soon! :)
Using a single strip of ribbon makes it gather too much across the top. By cutting the ribbon as the directions indicate the bonnet keeps its shape.
Just wondering...if you use the hot glue to attach the bow over the ribbon, you won't be able to tighten up the ribbon.
I hear you, they don't intend it to be tightened , the instructions have the ties and the rosette sewn together so the ties would not move if I sewed it or hot glued it :)
@@justvintagecrochet What I meant was, if the bows were attached further back then you could tighten the ribbon when you do it up under baby's chin or is the ribbon purely decorative?
@@catherinemelnyk I hear ya , the bonnet is pretty small , seems like it’s gonna be a perfect fit for a 0-3mos , I do t believe there will be a need to cinch it prior to tying, and it does still tie very well the way it is as is , but I full understand what you mean and your concern 👍
I’d still see it on for a real baby though, I’ve had too many glued stuff come off!
I have never had hot glue cone apart on crochet, I have been hot gluing crochet for a couple decades, washed and dried more times than I can count and the hot glue has yet to weaken on me , but that is just my experience
And hot gluing is just what I do, I don’t expect anyone else to if they are not comfortable with it 😊
It read wrong I actually said I would still stitch it for a real baby . Some babies are very strong, mostly boys but anyway, I t Houghton it a ould be an excellent way too ,to sew an embellishment in the middle
When it comes to adding things to baby items, you are much better off stitching it fast. (Hot glue does break down over time.) You never want to provide a child with a choking hazard, like a rosette that accidentally pops off.
That is also likely why they had the ribbon fastening instructions as they did. You don't want baby to be able to pull the ribbon free and swallow it.
PS. If you plan to sell these, always include a small note stating that baby should not be left unattended while wearing. (You don't want to be sued.)
I make baby booties, and my attorney insisted on the warning note, even though I double and triple-stitch buttons, ribbons, snaps, or anything that can come off.
Yes I think for certain that's the reason for sewing the ribbon in pieces! Babies can strangle themselves with a loose ribbon also. But Connie didn't make this for a actual child to wear, so her way made sense. Great advice for others out there who may make these to sell! 😊
They probably want you to cut the ribbon off around the bonnet because they didn't want you to "shrink" the bonnet over the face.
