If you are looking up crawfish bait online a lot of the stuff you find is kinda messy to handle because they like the oily stuff... BUT, as a new enthusiast myself, having just done my own crawfish boil with my own caught daddies, I can tell you this: corn is gold. Boil a few ears of corn, take one out and break it in half and throw it in- or keep it whole and tie it to the bottom. Works wonders!
that is a beautiful spot, very calm, it brings back memories of night fishing i used to do with my friends from 9pm - 4 am catching bass... i think i might try this trap this summer. we used to catch them by hand but the water was not that clean...
Good job and more fun to build. Weave the wire to close seams rather than individual ties for simplicity. Suggest holding an access door closed with mini-bungies and place the bait in a weighted mesh basket to hold down in place. Cheap fish based cat food works fine as bait.
try putting the bait in a canister tied to the centre of the trap ( like a plastic medicine bottle with lots of holes in it) it keeps the bait central to the trap and makes the bait last longer , that way they have to enter the trap instead of getting a free feed on top. Great spot ...loved the vid
I love fishing I done that fishing in a creek got fish and crayfish the Creek was near my grandpas house it's cool I do catch and return no hurt I do to them #fishforlife
Great Video. I was told I should keep the crawfish in fresh water for a few days and feed them corn meal. This way, you don't have to pull out the shit liner. Bcuz its just corn meal.
Thanks. I'm not sure if that's true or not. I read you need to purge them with salt then fresh water to rinse the salt off. However it is done I enjoyed catching and eating what I caught. Thanks for watching.
Jacody Smith I have never heard about cornmeal but what you may consider is trying this way. Take the crawfish that you want to boil and put them in a wash tub or ice chest or large bucket depending on how many you are boiling. Down here in Southern Louisiana we boil 45-50 lb sackloads of them. A decent crawfish boil with say 35-40 people, we may boil 3-5 sacks....so we take them and like i said put them in a container and cover them with water. Depending on the ammount you can dump a 1/2 box of salt and 1/2 box of baking powder on them and let them set in this brine for 10-15 minutes to purge them and clean them out. This will make them get rid of whatever they have eaten prior to you catching them. The longer you let them sit in the salty solution the more they will dump their groceries. Once thats done then as someone else said you will do up to 3-4 rince jobs on them to get rid of all the waste and whater bad stuff you can get rid of. This does not mean that you will clean them 100% but you will notice that little line running along the bottom of the tail will be black meaning something is in there or the line will be white meaning its cleaned out. Lots of folks eat all that no matter what, but I prefer to take off the black lines... :) I hope this helps...anything you really want to learn about crawfish/crayfish you might check out what the good cajun folks down in Louisiana do with them. keep enjoying the outdoors and be happy! Keith
Love the pics of the river. I used to work on a trout river near London England UK and that was the best work I ever did, really felt like I was part of the fish farm.
Try making a pillow trap or a pyramid trap. Made out of cheap chicken wire. I can't post pics of them because I don't know how but you can look it up and see how we catch tons of crawfish (literally) here in Louisiana on a daily basis. They have bait pockets built in. Best bait is dead, rotten fish or beef pancreas (we call it "melt"). For "your" trap maybe a can of tuna with holes poked in it would work and it would stay on the bottom. If you can figure out how to get those crawfish over her to La. you could be rich. LOL That's a lot of crawfish in the water. Better look up some recipes too b/c if you don't boil them right, they do not taste very good. if you boil them right, then they're a delicacy. Good luck..
Very Good,Outstanding video production. You show tge viewer, the goal of catch in the water. By making the traps you are teaching yourself and will be able to improve over time the effectiveness of the designs. Keep up the good work!
Make yourself a bait holding tin, or punch some hold on a manufactured sweet tin, put that inside a cauliflower type netting and tie it off either side so it sits in the centre of the trap not floating to the outside. But thats a good trap and not at all a bad catch.
A weighted nylon stocking filled with bait should work good. The bait will stay on the bottom of the trap, the nylon allows the scent to be released, and will prevent the lil bastards from eating all the bait. I've never trapped crayfish before, but this summer I plan to make a couple traps, about the size you made, and for bait I'm to going try out chicken liver: if that doesn't yield enough I will try minnows chopped into thirds.
I was using chicken livers as bait and it worked well. One day the grocery store ran out so I picked up some Johnsonville brats and ground them up with my fingers and threw them in a mesh bag, I haven't looked back since, worked great!
Fold in the edges on each side of the metal mesh a little under a foot so when you roll it up, you practically already have the inside cones made on both sides :)
I have some pictures to show you of different traps and nets but they wont allow me to post them here...you are on the right path, i wanted to show you some other ways...
It may vary by state. Follow your state rules and regulation guide. That should provide the answer. I've always bought a fishing license so I figure I was covered for the crawfish. Thanks for watching.
I made A trap similar to yours but what I did to keep my bait suspended in the middle of the trap so they can't get to it very easy is make a little square wire ox that I can open and close and wire it in the center.
Can you tell us the brand for the dog food? Or will any dry dogfood work? I think I'mma use dog food, chicken liver, boiled potato, and fish heads all in one in my trap. Great job though. The ecosystem in your lake looks in good health.
dude...wire a can of cheap sardines opened up half way to the bottom of the trap....don't feed the ones on the outside of the trap...you will get a hell-of-a lot more with bait on the inside....just a suggestion....
I've made traps out of 3/4" poultry netting. Way easier that hardware cloth or that expanded mesh and the little ones can go out the sides. The big ones stay in.
I love the video.very nice trap some Tips Crawfish like blood in cajun country we use ( melt ) the stomach lining of the cow it 90% blood you have to ask a butcher he should sell it to you for pennies per pound, its un eatable to humans,BLOOD MEAL calf liver may work ACADEMY sells Crawfish NETS $16 per dozen, you may be far enough south to buy them from an outdoor shop ,they are pyramid shaped 4 wire rods meet at the top the bottom of the rods spread out 20 inch square the bottom 4 wire rods hook to a 20x20 cotton net pick up a dozen curtain rod hangers a piece of bait about the size of a gulf ball hook the bait to the net set it in shallow water the tip should be about an inch above water line(a orange piece of ribbon for a marker on the very tip) you need to be fast now when you lift the net out of the water the cotton netting will sag down let the net slide from tip of pole into a bucket at your feet and dump use a long pole /stick and every 15 to 20 minutes run all 12 nets use the pole to churn up the mud get them move the smell of blood will start a feeding frenzy you should catch along with your traps an ice chest full a few hours
I had that same problem until I tried canned cat food. punch some holes in the can and open the top just a little. I even got a couple tiny sunfish in it too.
Hey nice trapping video I live in Minnesota and imma start crayfish trapping when the snow melt and I was wondering would it be easier/cheaper just to go out and buy traps or to make em there only like 10 bucks but I think it would be kinda fun to make me and what have you found to be good bait?
No fishermen, probably because of the full moon. The fish can see the nets, lines, traps, etc. At least that happens here in Greece. I guess that's the case everywhere.
This video was made close to shore and I tried to get up early as I could to prevent others from seeing where I set my trap since it's a public lake. Thank for watching.
They're called crawdads, geez... lol coming from louisiana the first time I heard the word crayfish or mudbug I had no idea what people were talking about
George H.B. That's a great suggestion for the bait. How's the fishing going in the Thunder Bay River? I go to Atlanta quite a bit but never fished the river. I plan on it this year.
Can bait is good but I poke holes in the can and put in entire can and that makes bait last longer . Look for cat food with a lot of fish in it and also potted meat does well to, but poke holes in it and put in trap can and all . Chicken parts work well also .
If you need to put some tinned fish rather than dog food as you will be eating it shortly, into a tobacco tin with a grill or some holes stick a stone in it with the fish and see what happens, maybe you should make the open end a little bigger in case you get lucky with some super crawfish eh?
a good idea is to put a ring inside a split ring like on a key ring holder large one ,then get yourself the bottom toe part of a ladies nylon stocking tights and put the floating dog food inside that and tie the top and then tie that to the ring it will float but the bugs wont eat the meat from the mesh ..
I have this stored at my friends house that is on this lake. If I use it next time I'm there I will make another video and add that footage since this one has been watched so many times. Thanks for watching.
How should I cook them? I heard you catch them, rinse them off, boil them with potatoes, corn, onions, and seasoning and when they're bright red and floated up they're done. Then you snap the tail off and eat the meat. Is this right? Can you only eat the meat in the tail and not the torso?
That's sounds like a great way to cook them. The tail is what you eat, torso would be guts & stuff. You can eat the meat in the claws but there wouldn't be much unless you had very big crayfish. Thanks for the question & watching.
Walkedfunnyguy: It would probably be cheaper to buy one already made. I wanted to build one just because I could. I liked the satisfaction that I made my own. I have only used this trap a few times and only baited with dogfood. There are a lot of great suggestions from other comments below. Thanks for subbing and watching.
You could also stick with the dog food or spam in put it in a pair of pantyhose knotted and cut off at the end then tie a line to it from the top of althe trpa to and one form the bottom of the trap to it then it stays in the middle no matter if the bait floats or sinks
Dayem bro. Cut the thing to length, Roll it, wire tie it, show how u make a cone. / cones. Show how u bait it and show how u catch and remove them.. my god.. then make another video how to eat them..
uugggh dog food why not bacon or hot dog or something like that . My sons go out the the rice fields and catch 50 or 60 in about an hr or 2 with a wad of bacon or hot dog on a fishing pole .

Thanks, it was fun.
gonna copy that trap myself pal you take care buddy happy fishing
love to watch this kind of video's, so entertaining.
Thanks for the upload lad!
Glad you liked it. I use youtube for learning/entertainment too. Glad I was able to share. Thanks for watching.
Nice channel locks man! my favorite too.
I was using chicken livers as bait and it worked well. One day the grocery store ran out so I picked up some Johnsonville brats and ground them up with my fingers and threw them in a mesh bag, I haven't looked back since, worked great!
Crayfish don't seem to picky on what they eat. Good idea using what was available.
Make a small weighted basket to put your bait in to keep it on the bottom.
Fold in the edges on each side of the metal mesh a little under a foot so when you roll it up, you practically already have the inside cones made on both sides :)

I've always wanted to try crawfish do you have to have a liscense to catch them or?
It may vary by state. Follow your state rules and regulation guide. That should provide the answer. I've always bought a fishing license so I figure I was covered for the crawfish. Thanks for watching.

Thanks!
once i figure out your crayfish catcher i'm going to steal your secrets and use it that way i can make some yummy dinner >:3
it works better if you take some nylon or cotton mesh and wrap your bait in it and tie it to the bottom middle of your trap
awesome trap n video
Hey, Thanks Alot. Glad you enjoyed the video.
really good video anything you recommend for bait or any tips?
dude...wire a can of cheap sardines opened up half way to the bottom of the trap....don't feed the ones on the outside of the trap...you will get a hell-of-a lot more with bait on the inside....just a suggestion....
I've made traps out of 3/4" poultry netting. Way easier that hardware cloth or that expanded mesh and the little ones can go out the sides. The big ones stay in.
+Leon Davis Good idea. I plan on making another one using the better tips that have been posted on here. Thank for the comment.
going to try crayfish trapping, if it ever warms up and melts 4feet of ice in the u.p. subbed
It's been a longggg winter. Good luck with the crayfish and thanks for subbing!

Chicken liver works really good
great video
So that water is safe to drink?
+Fatty Hamster It's a fresh water lake, you could drink it after boiling, using a filter or purification tablets.

Save any scrap meat from dinner and chuck it in there. Old ground meat in an onion sack works great too.
Has mesh on 3 2x12's side by side wondering what the width is...
Try poking a few big holes in a can of sardines (the ones in oil) ... toss the can in the trap
is that lake erie or not
Use a tune can and punch some holes in it... its magical...Lol
Lucky There are like no crayfish in my lake
George H.B.
That's a great suggestion for the bait. How's the fishing going in the Thunder Bay River? I go to Atlanta quite a bit but never fished the river. I plan on it this year.
do you know any good spots I Colorado
Never been to a water source in Colorado but I bet the department of Natural resources could point you in the right direction.
+1CHANCEPRO thank you I think by now your a pro
Try useing a canned fish packed in oil sardines mackeral samon tuna
Holy smokes man! Where is this?
Can bait is good but I poke holes in the can and put in entire can and that makes bait last longer . Look for cat food with a lot of fish in it and also potted meat does well to, but poke holes in it and put in trap can and all . Chicken parts work well also .

whats the name of food or fish can we put in trapper to trap prawns ?
thanx :)
so beautiful! where do you live?
Michigan. This is a beautiful lake but there is way better area's in our state. Quite a lot of great places in Michigan's U.P. Thanks for watching.
just one question, how in the name are you going to get your catch out?
+Jake Henry I had the end tie wired on. I eventually made a trap door on the bottom.
oh ok cool
a good idea is to put a ring inside a split ring like on a key ring holder large one ,then get yourself the bottom toe part of a ladies nylon stocking tights and put the floating dog food inside that and tie the top and then tie that to the ring it will float but the bugs wont eat the meat from the mesh ..
Lee Marsden Good idea, thanks for sharing.
Next time can we see you pour them out??? Great vid.
I have this stored at my friends house that is on this lake. If I use it next time I'm there I will make another video and add that footage since this one has been watched so many times. Thanks for watching.
if you cover the microphone on the camara with a fur strip it will only recored you and not thewind cool vid
Is this Wixom Lake
No, this was Hubbard Lake.
beautiful place!
Thanks. It is, happy to be up there whenever we can. Thanks for watching.
My daddy got attacked by a cat fish near there
Looked like some kind of synthetic bait he had broken off the line and just couldn't shake.
that was a cool vid man
Hey thanks, I did this for fun and it seems to be the best video I've made. Glad you liked it. Thanks for watching.
How did they taste
Very good, almost a sweet flavor. Could have been the seasoning or butter, but they were very good. Thanks for watching.
Wow one day I'll try them
Dude... Looks like a lure on that pikes head?

Bread works too!
put the bait into a piece of cheese cloth, tie closed and anchor to the bottom of the trap. If it floats. . all the better.
That would be a illegal trap in Louisiana, the holes have to be at least 3/4 of a inch
Walkedfunnyguy:

Problem with buying one already made is that they are not as big or well built as I like them to be.
where is the lake?
+Crazy Chipmunk Hubbard Lake, Michigan
+Crazy Chipmunk In North Eastern Michigan's lower Peninsula.
***** thanks
Cool dog.
l like your dog
Thanks, I named my channel after her, Chance...
I haven't been cut by them but I know they will cut your fishing line too.
Use cheese clothe put your food in and ty it to the bottom
Thanks, she's my baby. Going on 12 years old.
I think the white spot is a lure
it looks like a lure stuck to the pike
They like liver. And cans of cat food. Just poke a few holes all the way through.
You could also stick with the dog food or spam in put it in a pair of pantyhose knotted and cut off at the end then tie a line to it from the top of althe trpa to and one form the bottom of the trap to it then it stays in the middle no matter if the bait floats or sinks
good job
looks like a plastic worm on the pike.
Dayem bro. Cut the thing to length, Roll it, wire tie it, show how u make a cone. / cones. Show how u bait it and show how u catch and remove them.. my god.. then make another video how to eat them..
fresh dead fish works the best
I have the second biggest mall in the world up in Georgia
Perhaps a lamprey on his head?
U should put chick in liver or anchovies sardien heads tied to the top!
On our traps we put the dog food I'm little nets tied to the bottom
wrap your food in mutton cloth and put a sinkers in it
Crayfish.........(Crawfish)....Craydad....(Crawdad)
MUDBUG!
put dog food in a mesh bag and tie a weight to it :)
+Nicholas skinner to solve the floating dogfood problem
meats work great for crawfish
NO! that white spot is an infection! my ''pet'' fish had white on em' and then he died the day after we found out. :(
I feel much pain for your loss

The crayfish eat dogfood, you eat crayfish, techinically you eat dogfood. Sorry to break it to ya bud
Looks like a slug to me.
it's ok to edit
Boy crawfish really are stupid, Badd trap badd bait and still Caught them!
The only thing not bad about this was the taste of the crayfish.
hi
