    To summarize my tips:
    1) NYC is a big place and if you’re not from a city it can be overwhelming and that’s ok! Don’t put pressure on yourself to become a city person all the sudden
    2) friends change/ groups of friends change don’t try to be bffs with everyone you initially meet in college or at NSOP, things will happen organically over time
    3) it’s ok if your grades aren’t great freshman year
    4) you’re not alone/everyone feels the same way freshman year!

    hey!! do you have advice for waitlist people or have friends at barnard that got off the waitlist???

    • @mjdandnyc3193
      @mjdandnyc3193  4 года назад +5

      Hey! So I personally was never on a waitlist and neither was anyone that I know of from Barnard but my sister was actually waitlisted at the college she ended up going to (Wellesley!). I remember what she did was write a handwritten letter to the office of admissions thanking them for giving her the opportunity to be on the waitlist. She showed her enthusiasm for the school once again and stayed in touch about her status on the waitlists (not in a pushy way but enough to make sure they didn't forget about her lol). And my friend who was waitlisted at Skidmore did something similar where she reached out via letter (or email?) and expressed her strong interest in attending. She also sent a vid of her dancing (she was planning on minoring in dance there or something? I might be wrong) to re-express why Skidmore was so perfect for her. So I would def suggest you reassert your interest in Barnard, thank them a lot for putting you on the list, and maybe even write a letter/personal email about how much you'd love the opportunity to go to Barnard.

    I homeschool my daughter who was accepted, class of 2025. I am thinking that the single most important skill she will need in the forthcoming 4 years is to be able to write academically, whether essays, tests, research papers. That is what I am spending time on in terms of the subject that I am teaching. Your thoughts.

      I think that’s a good thing to focus on! Writing is an important skill

      @@mjdandnyc3193 If you don't mind my picking your collective brains...How much work would you estimate outside of class? Daughter is going to be a humanities/art major, all complicated by about 10 plus hours per week by athletic team. If you haven't done a video yet on this subject, I would recommend it. I should add that I am advising her to take a minimum load of 13 credits first and possibly second semester. Your thoughts?

      @@deeptime5581 we have a video up about the workload at Barnard/Columbia where we talk about how much time is dedicated to studies outside the classroom, so that might be helpful to watch. I think 13 credits for the first and second semesters is a good start; I think it's smart to take it easy your first year! if your daughter has AP credits from high school those can also count towards the credits required to graduate which will let her take a lighter course load
