If I had the insurance, then yes they cover a percentage of getting a replacement. But I didn't have insurance on it. I think this was all on me for not updating the app before flying and not checking for firmware updates etc during the preflight check. Lessons learned. But I will report the lost drone to them cause they do want to know about it when it happens.
@@darrendavidsonoutdoors Yeah ....the insurance for got about needing that. Let's hope when you report it they decide it was their issue and no insurance needed (Hope for the best at least)

Yes, I'm tempted to try and get into that pond. I have that old Scott canoe of mine which is already dented and beat up so may brush out a trail straight off the cut and see how tough it'll be to bushwack and bog crawl into there. If I can find a magnet like they use for magnet fishing, I may be able to get it back. But it depends how deep it sunk in the black muck swamp under the water.... If I even locate it.... but I may not be lying about the beavers stealing it cause they're known to grab the weirdest items and stuff them inside their houses or used to build the house or dam. 🤷♂️

@@jeffjackson5331 yup, I figured it's totalled anyways with the water and mud/muck damage but the memory card might be able to be salvaged after drying it out. Spare parts for the rest if the arms and propellers didn't get ripped off on impact after dropping from 160 feet up when it lost connection. Who knows, maybe it wouldn't cost too much to repair if it's not destroyed. Maybe I'll tell any friends; if you come with me and we do find it, they can have the drone. Be cheaper to fix I'm sure than getting a new one. The controller is still perfectly fine.
That's a painful accident/lesson. You have my condolences!!!! I was just checking out Drones yesterday after seeing all your great footage, I thought it was time to get my first. So I will certainly remember what you said! You may save me a similar fate. That clear cut looks promising on camera....I would love to try the Longbow there. Oh, and what is with the condoms?....that is too funny....and a little weird....a clear cut lol. Maybe it was a newbie hunter and his friends told him he should use a magnum lol. Thanks again Darren
Ya if I buy another one it'll probably be the DJI mini 4 pro. Any of the mini series are only 249 grams, under that 250 gram weight where you don't need a license. Anything bigger you have to get a license to fly it. Although maybe one day I'll step up to the bigger drones and get a license. For now, the minis are good enough for what I want. The thing I like about the mini 4 is there's a screen built into the controller so you don't need to use your phone. That could have been the issue too if my phone did some sort of power glitch. Also, the mini 3 and mini 4 has the follow me feature so if I'm on the ATV, truck, boat or canoe I could just have it follow me. The 2 SE doesn't have that feature. But lesson learned to make sure I do a full pre flight and make sure everything is updated before taking off each time.
That's one if my greatest fears also. I want one to film fishing from another perspective. But I worry about hitting the return button being on a boat. Would it return to the boat. Chances are I wouldn't be in the exact same location as when I launched it. And much like your drone gone in the bottom of the Lake. Great scouting tool for hunting and checking out the lay of the land prior to going hunting. Neat footage from your 2nd drone.
The return to home button makes a loud beeping sound so you know when you hit it and you can simply hit it again to cancel it. Also, I think the newer versions have a return to "controller" feature instead of the home point where it launched. Honestly, after doing all the investigation in how this happened, I think the battery simply shut off and went into sleep mode. They're smart batteries apparently and if you don't do the DJI firmware update, the drone and battery won't match up. That battery never had the firmware update so I think it simply malfunctioned and shut off. That's why I'd like to get the SD card back and hopefully it'll show what happened. If I see the crash, the battery was still on but if I don't it means it shut off mid flight.
@@DCOutdoors well, there could be another video on the rescue mission. Watching your video on magnet fishing I was like; $30!? That's it, pull up the Amazon app. Ordering a magnet fishing kit cause that looks like fun even if I don't get the drone back. Problem is most of the parts are plastic but the motors are metal so if I can figure out where it is, the grappling hook that came with mine (the one up from your model) may be able to help lift it with the magnet. First I have to find my way into in that beaver pond, then paddle around hoping to snag it. Not even sure it's worth the risk but may try and first cut a trail with a saw and machete, then come back with the canoe. It's all up in the air right now but I was studying maps and figuring out a plan the other night. It's only 400 meters in from where I can drive. But it's 400m of thick boreal forest, tag alders, bog and beaverdam swamp. Oh and I have to cross the creek to get to all that. 🤷♂️
Weird, I had a long comment typed out yesterday and I don't see it! I was saying how scared I am of losing my drone. Sorry that happened to you but good thing you have a spare! And thanks for the info on the upgrade because I kept seeing it on my app and ignored it. Yikes! I've done it now. Lol. Also about the clearcut, sometimes that's the only way they can regenerate the forest. Jack Pine needs high heat to open the cones to re-seed. They'll either bring the brush back to open them in an oven or do a prescribed burn. I took forestry a very long time ago and did not get an opportunity to see one in action. I'm wondering if they still do it that way. Not sure. Anyway, in case people do not understand why it's done that way, might be helpful! Have a great day!
Yes, it's done that way for certain reasons. I just prefer the old fashioned way of select cutting and just along the large trees and leaving the small ones to grow bigger. But with today's equipment, the clear cuts are the quickest cheapest way of doing it. Plus with more houses needed to be built, it's in high demand. I'm not too worried on this part of the forest cause none of this area here is natural forest. It's been cut at least twice now in my lifetime alone. I was just a little Darren last time they cut it.
And yes, about the drone, it seems the drone simply powered off mid flight. I keep thinking that the spare battery I bought online, wasn't from DJI and came from a different company. It was the first time using that battery and I thought; seemed like a good deal at the time but when it crashes your drone in the only swamp around that area, it's not such a good deal anymore. I always feared something like that happening and as you saw how slow I was flying around the beaver pond, was cause I was nervous and kept watching my signal strength and all the other numbers flashing. As soon as it showed a bit weaker signal I came back up above the tree line to get full signal again. Now I know these things at least. If it would have hovered, it would have returned to home once the battery ran out but looking at those holes in the lillypads, a couple look similar the the shape of a drone crashing through from 160 feet up. If only I had a float attached to it....🤷♂️
@darrendavidsonoutdoors I didn't think it was waterproof though? Even if you did find it, the only thing you could salvage would be the SD card (I think...?) I could be wrong though! I was paranoid doing our last video because I used it during our build. The space is super small so I had a hard time getting good angles for recording. The drone worked amazing...only a bit of swaying. But it kept raining off and on so I'd have to land it and take cover. Lol
@lorettaandjasonoffgrid yes, it would be destroyed even if I did find it. Good thing is any of the video that was important on the SD card, I already had copied onto another card. May have been one video from it that won't make the big canoe trip video series but it's fine. I can edit around it. Reminds me to try and keep copies either on my laptop or another card in case this happens again. 🙄
You would think they would have an audible alert that could be played even after the battery is pretty much dead. That sure would make them easier to find.
Yes, they do have a chirp type thing sound and the lights flash if you crash it somewhere dry and there's still battery power. But after trying to figure out what happened, it appears mine simply shut off mid flight and where it did that happened to be right over that beaver pond. It's so thick to get in there but I'd still like to at least try to cut a trail to at least get my canoe into there. I may find it with a magnet but there's so much plastic on them, even that will be tough. 🤷♂️
@@tubbyguyoutdoors yup. See all those ducks on that pond!? When I first flew over with my drone, I thought it was just a couple of beavers but then realized they were all ducks hanging out. Too bad it's so thick to get in there. But it is cool to be able to explore with the drone. Other channels have used their drone to find easiest routes to portage into back lakes since a lot of lakes don't have trails to them. Yes, I was hoping it would have crashed somewhere on dry ground and I would simply walk in and get it. My luck isn't that great cause it seemed to loose power directly over that one beaver pond in the whole area. I still plan to try and get in there with my canoe somehow and hopefully get it back but odds are slim.
I would contact DJI maybe they can get the data to see if it went down or flew away. It may be replaceable. I wouldn't give up that easy. Get some waders and a canoe and go look for it.
The "Find my drone" feature says it's in the middle of that beaver pond. So would need a magnet to try fishing it out if I even find it. Lots of weeds and muck in the bottom of that pond. I'm thinking that battery I bought online just turned off mid flight and dropped. And yes I spent hours looking on the opposite side in the next cut over incase it flew away and crashed over that way.
