Could you say fiquei conhecendo in place of fiquei sabendo?

They do not mean the same thing. If you mean "I learned about this", you need to say "fiquei sabendo"

People will understand you. It doesn't sound totally wrong. But we'd use the verb Saber. It's more natural, I feel.

When you say "Eu preciso conseguir leite", it sounds to me as if milk is not available anywhere and you really need it (maybe you have a baby at home), so you gotta find a way to get it.
Now, if you just need to buy some milk: Eu preciso comprar leite. = I need to get milk.

It funny that the usages of ismer=conhece and tud=sabe are exactly the same in Hungarian as in Brazilian.
