  • Modified filter mask was used to make a type of respirator that would allow the welding helmet to pull down all the way. A normal mask would get in the way of the welding helmet , closing down onto the filters that stick out the side of the respirator. It also serves to relocate the filters in such that they are not directly over the fumes of welding or area of grinding. The parts were easily were obtained from hardware stores.

    I made something similar years back. It was built around a cheap type of 4"x4"x1" square "Dust/Fume/Volatile organic compound" filter that my local welding supply shop used to stock. The filter was fitted into the lid of in a small plastic tub that also housed a rechargeable 3x "D cell" battery pack and a computer case fan. I threw it together in a couple of hours in the garage, so it looked VERY home made (The waist strap was a bungee cord I dug out of the back of my car, with a couple of knots in it to make it around the right length !!! :D ) but it worked surprisingly well, cost next to nothing to make, and stopped me having to spend 20 minutes blowing dark grey snot out of my nose every time I'd been doing a DIY project that required more than a couple of tack welds. :D
    Unfortunately, I moved to a different city, and couldn't find anywhere local who stocked the filters (And couldn't even remember what brand of air fed mask the filters were sold for). I didn't do so much welding after that any way, so on the occasions I did, I just used disposable dust masks and good ventilation....... Although, The grey snot says these aren't anywhere near as effective. :D

    Thanks Brute4rce for sharing your design, and the parts you used. It would seem if NIOSH or OSHA is actually interested in "protecting" rather than penalizing or enforcing, they too would pursue common sense alternatives, for those who work outside the "approved" safety standards of commercial industry, yet refuse to endure a $1500.00 gouging, for little more than a drain pipe and PVC fittings, consequently putting themselves, and their lives at risk.

    Thanks! I actually do mostly MIG welding as a side job for entry gates and hobby. About the filters, I have actually had luck with them for about 2 months until i have to replace them. The instructions say to replace when it becomes difficult to breathe through them.

    the manufacturer of my respirator is by AO Safety and is named "professional multi-purpose respirator". Get the one that has round filters and that says p-100 filtration, thats what mine is.

    The dishwasher hose I bought from Lowes in the plumbing section, it comes loose in a clear bag and has 2 black rubber fittings already attached; an elbow and a straight coupling. I used the rubber elbow and snug fitted it in one of the holes on the mask where the filter attaches. Then I drilled a hole horizontally into the ABS tube and threaded a pvc coupling into. Then the washer hose coupling just snug fits over that piece.

    Hey man, you can buy a 40mm adapter for your half mask, attach a tube to it and then you can have proper filters.

  • @coburnlowman
    @coburnlowman 7 лет назад +5

    That is a great idea BUT the hose is too long and you will build up co2 In it. That's one of the reasons snorkel tubes are no longer than they are. If you had a pressure system to pump fresh air to you it would be much safer.

      I was thinking of a way to clip it to the back of the helmet and make it all one unit, thus shortening the hose and making everyone happy!

      Phartattack For shop work that might be awesome, but it would never fly in the field. Too many situations where you have to cram your head into some tight space to see what your doing and the helmet gets in the way enough as is. At least for an an ironworkers expected duties.

    Very nice modification. you probably shouldn't fart while breathing through that though. haha

    At first i thought you built a battery powered device. instead of going through all this trouble buy the "Miller Electric Lpr-100 Half Mask Respirator #Ml00894" off of Amazon for between 25-30 bucks. it has a low profile design and is made for under welding hoods. there isnt much room for stagnant HOT air to build up inside the mask and i honestly feel like i could wear it all day.

    I think I will use your idea as well thanks for the tips. I'm tired of the smoke inhalation.

  • @Brute4rce1111
    @Brute4rce1111  13 лет назад

    @greintsma Actually, it is very easy to breathe through and it does have a one-way exhaust valve on the mask part itself so co2 doesn't build up in the hose. I just left the extra length for more flexibility but it could be a little shorter.

  • @bbglas007
    @bbglas007 12 лет назад

    I'm sure that filter is going to last a lot longer than one on an actual helmet will too.

  • @valveman12

    I use a 3m Respirator. Fits right in the helmet no problem. The cartridges are like a small pancake.

  • @reggiemcdaniel1802

    Could possibly drill holes in the helmet at a position so that the filters would be exposed outside of the helmet to reduce CO2 and shorter output lines to each filter.

    I have a question - if you welders do your welding in a room why don't you just get a long tube which has a fan at the end and just place the end of the tube on a area where the welding fumes can't get. That way you wouldn't even need those filters which can be pricy and which you need to replace after some time. So just a long tube that example goes out of a window and sucks fresh air in and onto your berating mask - you don't need to filter the air with a filtering system because the air is already clean - you get better air flow and don't need to buy filters.

    • @Brute4rce1111
      @Brute4rce1111  4 года назад

      Some people do it that way, however, if you do a lot of moving around the work area, such tubes would get in the way and possibly twist and kink out your air supply. Another consideration to think about is the possibility of built up carbon monoxide in the supply hose possibly resulting from a faulty exhaust fan. Don't get me wrong, both work really well, especially the type you're talking about and I am by no means an expert on the subject. However, it's true each have a very specific purpose and for a very specific working area.

  • @Brute4rce1111
    @Brute4rce1111  14 лет назад

    It actually came with the dishwasher hose so all i had to do is flip it around and reconnect. One side of the elbow was narrower and fit the mask better so thats why i had to flip it around.

    great job!! just saved yourself a ton of money.. what type of welding do you do? just wondering how long you think the filters will last, ive been told that carbon filters as soon as they are exposed from package, they start to lose effectivness

    Thank you all for your very kind comments to this video. I am so glad to be helping people along with fellow welders in making a safer work environment. I employ anyone who watches this video to do the same and create your own welding respirator. I would like to add that Miller has just recently came up with a new low profile mask that is specifically designed to work under welding helmets without obscuring the view of the welder. Hmm, I wonder if they saw my video ;) anywase, check it out!

    • @greenleafkratom
      @greenleafkratom 8 лет назад

      +Jim Pupil The L fitting is a standard 3/4 inch male to female elbow adapter that i purchased at Lowes. You can find these at Home depot as well. The respirator used was an AOSAFETY type but they are since discontinued. I will be making another video with an improved version that will accept new 3m type filters soon!

    • @naaaja6228
      @naaaja6228 8 лет назад

      Ah ok it looked like a 3m Mask which has the 'bayonet' style connection, that might be tough to make a connector for that. I have one but it doesn't fit under my hood with standard cartridges on there...Am going to order the 2097 filters which are low profile and should fit
