I practiced this for 3 hours every day for a week. I was so excited to perform it for my wife, just to get a giggle. Grabbed the cup and didn't realize she'd filled it and spilled it all over me. Got the giggle, at least.
I love that they put this in the movie when they found out she could do this. I also love how she found this on a video and was blown away by it so much that she literally spent all night learning how to do it.
I think most young people don't recognize this song from the original Carter Family back in the late 1920s, "When I'm Gone, " sung in 3-part harmony, even before the birth of Bluegrass.
I learned this cup clap at church camp back in 1993. We sang it to another song, "King of Kings and Lord of Lords." We did it around a table and passed the cups to each other as we sang. It's perfect for this song tho❤
This scene is impressive because she is not only singing beautifully, but she is singing to a multi step rhythm beat she’s creating with her hands and a cup. It takes some mental power to maintain that rhythm, focus on it, and sing all at the same time, just as it would take more effort to play an instrument (or do basically anything with your hands) while singing, than if you were just singing.
I remember the night my teenage daughter decided to learn this. On a wooden table. Downstairs. Directly under my room. All night. 😂
The cameraman knows what he is doing.

I love the clip of her watching this and she’s like “Damn I’m totally checking myself out right now” 😂
her voice is beautiful .
I'm definitely watching the cup. I'm not watching anything else, just the cup. I swear.
She has an amazing set of vocal chords

And just like that it's 2013 again!

The Pitch Perfect films are among my favorites. I can watch them over and over!
