The iPhone 15 external SSD problem is an issue with the iPhone 15 not seeing any NVME Gen4 SSD in any USB C to NVME enclosure or any combination of NVME Gen4 M.2 SSD or NVME Gen3 M.2 SSD in a USB4 to NVME enclosure or Thunderbolt 4/USB4 to NVME enclosure. This issue persists regardless of using either the APFS or ExFAT formats and the size of the NVME SSD doesn't make a difference, be that 1TB, 2TB or 4TB NVME Gen4 M.2 SSD. Is this a power problem, PCIe bandwidth problem or simply another unneccesary restriction to yet another Apple product by a company know for such things on other devices of theirs? Helpful - I commented on one of your other videos (samsung v iPhone disk speed). I think maybe power is a risk. If the drive doesn't receive enough power, at best transfer speeds will slow. At worst, the transferred files will be corrupted - the risk there is that with standard copy to move files (vs say rsync with checksum) is that the integrity of the files is not checked, so a user may not notice their files are corrupt until it's too late. Terrible for backups - not so bad for scratch disks / temporary use. I couldn't find in the phone specs how much power they (Samsung / iPhone) can put out.
ive got 2 samsung 990 4tb nvme drives in dockcase enclosures. 15 pm 1tb reads and writes to them with no issue. ive not seen your video here but you said this is not possible at the top of the video so i wanted to chime in.
Your video has been helpful. I bought a USB 3.2 Gen 2x2 SSD 2tb (T-Force M200) and formatted it to APFS on my Mac only to discover my iPhone 15 pro couldn't see it. Watched this video and I'm like... ok. No good. Then Contacted the company and they said try a dongle. So I put apple's USB C - USB A adapter on and connected it, and magically, now the drive works. So, maybe that is something to try with your non functioning results. It may likely still not function, or maybe it will start working magically. God Bless.
My gen 4 ssd worked after a lot of testing. I had to format the WD SN750 as exFAT on my macbook, then used an external usb hub connected to power AND the iphone 15 pro, and then 1 usb A to hub -> usb c to SSD enclosure.
same here using a 4tb is working well. But that's really the maxed out power that the iphone supports, the specsheets of the WD SN750 says Peak average active power 6.5W. If you add a usb hub + the wd sn750, the iphone can't provide enough power. I'm looking for a ssd that drains less (still 4tb is possible) but with less power consumption so it can be used with a usb-c hub (that will drain a couple of watts alone). Do you guys know any alternatives? even slower (minimum 500mb/s would be ideal), but that drain less power
@@welsonwei3285 yeah I know but better to be able to use it without a power in, no? more portable.. otherwise what’s the point of using a phone while it’s connected to a power bank
I'm using a JEYI 2230 Only M.2 enclosure with a corsair MP600 mini 1TB M.2, with a usb right angle high speed adapter and having this same issue. Incredibly frustrating. I went with this set up as I wanted to use my phone on a gimbal while adding some more storage. Now I guess it's back to the drawing board.
Same here. I use Samsung 990PRO with an Acasis 10 in 1 hub. The hard is recognised by MacBook, but on iPhone 15PRO no. Now I tried with original usb cable from iPhone and works fine
This video is definitely misleading. Nothing is wrong with the iPhone’s storage. Apple stated that the new USB C iPhone 15 Pro models, they can handle external storage of certain specs and will not go above a certain power draw. How much is it? apple’s support page says, no more than 4.5 watts. When a gen 4 NVMe is idle, its power draw can range between .05 to .58 watts. And when it’s reading/writing, it can be above 6 watts. Newer gen NVMe SSDs typically consume more power than older generation NVMEe SSD’S. I don’t see the reason to sensationalize this. This video is almost 40 minutes. Why didn’t you connect the iPhone to a USB-C hub, plug in the same gen 4 ssd to the hub and the give the hub power through a USB-C pd port and see if the gen 4 ssd shows up in the Files app. I’m certain that since the hub would get power and also charge the phone, the phone will read the SSD as it won’t have to expel power to read the drive. Why not try that?
I also have the problem that none of my 3 SSDs (a Gen4, a SanDisk 2TB and a LaCie 2TB) are recognized by the iPhone15Pro. Also doesn't work if I connect with 2 different hubs (with additional power).
Idk it’s pro iPhone, it’s a grand, and it’s encouraged to record pro res 4k 60 fps. And I see pro buying enclosures so they can upgrade them in the future especially when their pro iPad and pro mac work with them flawlessly. It’s seems like a stupid limitation to make me upgrade next year when their other devices work just fine.
This power theory doesn’t really hold up since android devices have no problem hosting my usb4 enclosure but the iPhone does. Also you can use an old usb2.0 cable and it will work with every device except the iPhone and usb2.0 specs are only 2.5w. It must be a firmware issue.
I had the same issue. When I first bought the iPhone 13 Pro Max, I used a power bank, and it worked fine. But after upgrading to the 15 Pro Max, it doesn’t connect to my Samsung 980 Pro 2TB SSD. It only connects if I first plug the SSD into a computer and then into my phone. However, as you mentioned, my ProRes videos transfer very slowly, and can’t even read them Properly without lagging.
Hi, Rod. Depending on the revision of your Sandisk drive, as some of these have been upgraded over time. I suspect that it may be a power delivery issue with the iPhone. I think some of the faster Sandisk drives use NVME SSDs within the enclosure and it may be this that the phone is having problems with. There may also be a PCIe issue as well, although I can’t say for sure. One thing that is for sure though, is that more and more people are noticing these problems. Thank you for comment, it’s not only very helpful to me but I’m sure it will be extremely helpful to others 👍 Sorry I can’t be of any help. Cheers, Dave.
And with my SSD connection to the iPhone 15 pro Max is when I use a USB hub and plug the power bank or USB power to the setup the drive, then gets noticed because it seems to require more power than what the phone can provide on its own, so depending on the settle or what I’m trying to shoot are you better than Options. This is using a cheap usb-c cable
Erasing the data from brand new ssd worked for me. Launch Disk Utility. Select the external SSD on the left part of the window. Click "Erase" on the top of the Disk Utility window. Complete related information (name, format, scheme), then click Erase.
Suggest some for iPhone 13 please I want to store my files because I have only 128gb variant. Please suggest something which should I buy SSS HDD? Or which type
Hi. Yes, they are great. They're just as fast as any other 10Gb/s enclosure but are way easier to use than most of them and I think they look really neat as well. They also come with a nice short USB C to USB C cable and an A to C cable. Cheers, Dave.
Especially since acasis tech-support is only capable of suggesting that I must be using the wrong cable, or that I need to supply power to the unit while connecting it to the phone.
I have an Acasis enclosure that works just fine with the iPhone 15 Pro Max. I also have one from OWC, the Envoy Pro FX that works just fine as well. But the Acasis only works with a Gen3 drive, not a Gen4 drive. Wild.
Yes, Gen4 needs more current. This is why Apple shouldn’t have cheaped out and they should have put a Thunderbolt/USB4 port on the phone. Cheers, Dave.
Yeah, well it’s still a good first step. A plethora of products work with iPhone’s usb port. I like the idea of thunderbolt, but thunderbolt requires at least 7.5 W from the port, up to 15W if it is called thunderbolt 4. iPhone battery will diminish quite rapidly if supplying 15W to a device. Plus with thunderbolt, Apple will have to implement PCIe tunneling. Not sure if it’s worth it on a Phone.
@@j340_official Each to their own but I disagree. Given that Apple are promoting the use of ProRes recording, which will inevitably need saving to an external SSD for speed, they should simply have put TB4/USB4 on all the phones. Battery drain wouldn’t be an issue, as anyone using TB4 would understand this as a trade off and anyone using typical USB C devices wouldn’t even notice. Plus, the implementation of USB on the iPhone isn’t very good. It’s not working well with many peripherals that even the iPad Mini with its “older” 5Gb/s USB works with. Given that the iPad Pro has TB4/USB4 and it’s cheaper, again, it just stinks of Apple doing slow rollouts so that they can hold back features to the following year. I bet the iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max get TB4 and the 16 and 16 Plus get 10Gb/s USB. The fact that they restricted the 15 and 15 Plus to 480Mb/s just proves Apple’s strategy, which is something you clearly see in other ranges of theirs and something they have form for.
@@DavidHarry There is no phone with thunderbolt! I think it is a decent trade off if a phone tops out at 10 Gbps. Many other mobile phones from Samsung and others top out at 5 Gb/s. Part of why the USB4 spec doesn’t require PCIe tunneling is because some of the mobile manufacturer folks who want to use a USB4 port don’t want to add the extra cost/complexity/power to implement and support PCIe tunneling. For all we know, implementing a thunderbolt controller, PCIe, and supplying up to 15W to a power hungry device might cause overheating. Some thunderbolt devices run hot! All I think Apple needs to do is increase the iPhone’s output wattage from 4-4.5W max to 7.5W and that will support the majority of USB-c devices that people want to use with iPhone. Thunderbolt would be nice on a phone, but unless Apple implements a better cooling solution, I just don’t see thunderbolt coming to the iPhone any time soon. But I am open to being pleasantly surprised.
Hi, Andy. There is every possibility of that. However, the real question that goes begging here, is why Apple didn't just put Thunderbolt 4 on ALL the new iPhones. Considering that TB4/USB4 is totally compatible with all earlier USB formats, it would have made more sense. The iPad Pros have this and some of them are cheaper than the iPhone 15s and way cheaper than the Pro Max. I guess that next year the 16 Pro and Pro Max will get TB4/USB4 and the standard 16 and 16 Plus will get 10Gb/s USB C. It wouldn't surprise me to find out that this phone is actually already capable of TB4/USB4 and Apple just disable it. Cheers, Dave.
Good point David. You could be right that a software update fixes this. Hopefully a fix is rolled out. I think you're right Dave that Apple will hold back USB 4 for another year so that they release it as a feature. 👍
I hope the software update fixes this! Just build my acasis yesterday with a gen4 2tb wd_black and found out today it doesn't work with the iphone 15 pro max :|
Thank you for this! Very comprehensive and detailed video. 10 months later and same situation I guess as mine is not working with my 15 Pro. Maybe they'll fix in the 16?
Hi. As long as the SSD is formatted correctly, then most of these issues are likely to be the iPhone not being able to provide enough power/current to the SSD to make it work. You could be correct, it may be resolved with the iPhone 16. However, seeing as Apple could have made this all work with the 15, I'm not sure that they will change anything for the 16. Cheers, Dave.
@@DavidHarry thanks! I did watch another video of yours where you discovered the power issue. I confirmed that my enclosure and nvme drive work fine with iPhone 15 pro and my iPad Air usb c (the one before the M series) when I use a powered usb c hub. Was fast too, was well over 1000MB/sec by my estimation. Wild that Apple hasn’t accounted for this 🤦♂️
@@awm19delta Hi. Yes, using a powered hub to add the extra power can usually work. I say usually because I've still had instances where the iPhone would still not see the SSD. I'm really surprised that Apple didn't use a Thunderbolt controller with the iPhone 15, which would have also been backward compatible with USB-C. With Thunderbolt you get a bit more power/current which is enough to work with most of these SSDs. My iPad Pros generally work really well with these USB-C SSDs and they use Thunderbolt 4. Maybe Apple will use Thunderbolt 4 for the iPhone 16, which will help for higher power delivery. Another reason why I think it was a mistake not to use either a higher power capacity USB-C controller or Thunderbolt 4. Is because with the iPhone 15, or at least the Pro and Pro Max, Apple purposefully made a decision for those phones to work with external SSDs when recording 60FPS 4K ProRes 422 HQ. Something that they don't do with their internal storage. Given that people would definitely use external drives for that particular video standard, Apple must have known that there would have been power issues. Anyway, it will be interesting to see what they do with the 16. Cheers, Dave.
hello, please tell me, is there any information when the iphone 15 pro max will start seeing ssd gen4? because I didn't know this subtlety, I bought a Western Digital sn740 with a gen4 interface...
Assuming you are using a format that the phone understands, it sounds like the SSD needs more power than the phone can supply. You may have to use a powered dock or hub.
Well I'm sure this be useful to someone wondering why their external storage isn't recognized. I do love those Sabrent USB 3.2 M.2 enclosures. I've got 4 of them for my laptops. I also have 3 of their USB 3.1 SATA adapters. At the time they came out they were the fastest adapter being sold.
Alright, Mike. There's already loads of people complaining about their iPhones not seeing their SSD storage. I know this video is very long but it does go through a whole bunch of examples to prove the point. BTW, I'm just rendering out some WZM Season 6 gameplay that I'll have up on this channel a bit later. I used your "Pro Tip" for using a freezer pack to keep it cool 😆 Cheers, Dave.
@@DavidHarry I look forward to seeing if the ice pack works. Also shame on Apple for not cooling the logic board housing the A17 Pro. Yet they promoted Resident Evil and Death Stranding running on it.
@@Mike5GSR Alright, Mike. Yes, the ice pack defo works, it’s the only way I can play the game. Although, totally useless for anyone playing touch. I may be getting a phone cooler sent for review. However, going by what’s needed as far as the ice is concerned, I’m not sure any fan cooler could do the job. Yes, shame on Apple. Let’s see what happens with these “AAA” games when they arrive. Cheers, Dave.
@@DavidHarry I bet these games don't even release until the iPhone 16. Best case scenario they make a nerfed throttled mode for iPhone 15. I saw that Razer Chroma magsafe cooler. Looks like a good bandaid for this problem.
@@Mike5GSR Alright, Mike. If Apple’s whole “we will be fully Apple Silicon by November 2022” and their Mac Pro was almost 8 months after that point, to make the full transition of all their Mac products to Apple Silicon. Then yes, it’s anyone’s guess as to when they get these games on the iPhone. One of the games is supposed to be before the end of this month and another before the end of the year. Something tells me that is not going to happen. Cheers, Dave.
Yes, with certain Gen 3 SSDs the iPhone may see the drive. However, when writing large amounts of data, it may struggle. It definitely won’t see the drive if there’s a Gen 4 SSD inside it. Cheers, Dave.
@@Stevexupen Sorry, my mistake, I was thinking of the 750. In that case, that’s the first time I’ve heard of a Gen 4 SSD with the 405Pro M1 working with the iPhone. Every combination I’ve tried hasn’t worked as the iPhone can’t supply the necessary power. I’ve only managed to get my drives working on the Macs and iPad Pros as they have Thunderbolt which supplied more power than the USB C on the iPhone. Cheers, Dave.
I’d love to see this test again but with a watt meter in between. It’d be very interesting. I’m also wondering if an SSD draws less than 4.5 watts at “idle” and more when under load could this damage the SSD or corrupt files? I know cutting power when a storage device is transferring is not a good idea so.. 🤔
I couldn't see my drive (Acasis 6-in-1 with Kingston KC3000 4TB) appear in my iPhone 15 Pro too. I saw it once appear on my iPad Air 4th Gen, but just for only once... I couldn't see it appear anymore. that's very strange...
Hi. Yes, it's super annoying. The problem is because the iPhone can't send enough power to operate the external enclosure and SSD. I will do a video soon showing that if you use a Thunderbolt or USB C dock or a Thunderbolt or USB C hub then it will work. This is because the Thunderbolt/USB C dock/hub uses its own power to power the enclosure and SSD. Cheers, Dave.
Hi I have an Acasis 10in1 HUB with a NVME M.2 Samsung 990 PRO 1 TB. Everything works fine, any port, but the SSD it isn't recognised by iPhone 15PRO. On MacBook works fine. I tried to change the cable with the other from a Kingston external SSD that is recognised by iPhone too. It didn't worked on iPhone. Now I tried with the original iPhone cable and works fine on both (iPhone & MacBook )
I believe the root cause of this problem is the limited power output of the iPhone usb-c port. I tried several gen 3 SSD and enclosure combinations and could not get 1 to work until I plugged the SSD to a type-c hub which supports power input. Once I connected this hub to a power supply through another type-c cable then it works like a charm.
Can you explain this. I have an iPhone 15 pro. I also have a sunbow 1tb ssd. I also have a usbC 7 in 1 hub. The ssd can be seen on iPhone using its own supplied cable through an old usb to usbc adapter also supplied with the ssd. It can’t be seen using a 0.5m 20gb usbC 3.2 c to c cable. It also can’t be seen using a 40gb straight usbC to c straight connector. However, both the lead and connector allow the ssd to be seen if I plug them into the 7in1 hub with a power cable in it. So I can connect the hub to power (old usb to usbC cable). Then plug in ssd on cable or connector at the same time as having a sd card in the hub and I can read them both on iPhone. So why should it work through the hub but not connected directly?
Great work with this testing. I have been doing some testing myself today with my iphone 15 pro. I have a ASUS ROG Arion NVMe enclosure and I am getting some very inconsistent results. I tested with 2 SSDs. One Samsung Evo 970 Plus 500 Gb and a Kingston KC2500 1 Tb. the Kingston will never work no matter if I format it as APFS or ExFAT, GUID, MBR or Apple Filetable. The Samsung connected to my iphone once as ExFAT, MBR but I can't get it to connect again.
Hi. Thank you for your comment 👍 Although the examples in this video are very obvious ones, which I only used because they were 100% repeatable, I’ve also had the same inconsistencies that you’ve had with other drives of my mine. I’ve also had drives being picked up and then lost and also different results with formatting, just as you have. I didn’t show these examples as they weren’t 100% reproducible. Although the examples in this video would seem to suggest PCIe restrictions and maybe power restrictions. Your experience, along with the others of mine that are similar, I would guess are down to power delivery problems. The only problem is that it’s very difficult to give an absolute reason why this is happening but between my experiences, your experiences and the experiences that others have reported on my other videos about issues with external storage. It is very safe to say that there is definitely a problem and I think it would be fair to suggest that one of those problems does look like power delivery issues. I’ve actually got more videos to do with more inconsistencies and just hope that more people wake up to these problems. Again, thank you for your comment and I’m sorry that I can’t offer you anything concrete as to what is the problem. Actually, try this if you can. If you connect one of your problematic drive setups to a powered USB C or Thunderbolt dock and hub and then connect the dock/hub to your phone, I think you’ll find that the phone will have no problems seeing the drive. This works for me with every drive setup that is problematic being connected direct, again, suggesting a power delivery issue. Cheers, Dave.
@@DavidHarry I totally agree, I have tried various hard drives and SSD through a PD USB-C hub and that gives more consistent and reliable results. Also my ipad pro can deliver power for all variants and does not suffer from the same restrictions. I haven't tried any Gen 4 SSDs though but this is definately a question of power delivery.
@@bunkermagnus Hi, Magnus. I forgot to say but I too don't have these issues with my iPad Pros , M1 or M2. However, these iPads use Thunderbolt and Thunderbolt delivers 15w as a minimum (from what I can remember). So yes, it really does look like a problem of power delivery. This is really bad as Apple have been pushing this whole recording ProRes to an external SSD. And let's face it, most people who are likely to be using ProRes on an external drive are likely to be people who are already doing video production, who will inevitably be using good, fast SSDs for their workflows and probably many using enclosures with Gen4 NVMe SSDs in them and also Thunderbolt drives. I really can't see casual users wanting to record externally using ProRes. This is why I think Apple have screwed up so big with this. What they should really have done was to put Thunderbolt 4 on all of these new iPhones, or at the least TB4 on the Pro/Pro Max and 10Gb/s USB C on the 15 and Plus if they needed the market segregation (but I think all the iPhones in the same range should have the same interface secs). With TB4, it would have been fully USB4 compatible and fully backward compatible with all USB standards via the C port. I'll do a video soon showing the difference between the iPad Pro and iPhone 15 with this drive issue. While I have a lot of negative things to say about this iPhone, it really is a great phone. Although, I may see it differently than others, as my previous phones have been SEs and Minis, so the jump to this one has been significant for me. Cheers, Dave.
I have 2TB sabrent rocket 4 plus with ugreen encloser. The drive wont show at my iPhone 15 pro max but when plug it on my Pixel 7 pro it works properly.. So what do you reckon is the problem? Is it about the phone or the power? Thanks
It's a power problem on the iPhone. If you use the SSD on a powered hub or powered dock connected to the iPhone then it will work, which indicates the issue being lack of power from the iPhone. Cheers, Dave.
Hook up a belkin usb-c hub with a power bank in the PD input on the belkin. Connect all that to your iPhone 15 pro and it will read thunderbolt 4 NVMe drives.
ive got iphone 15pm 1tb. i have 2 samsung 990 4tb nvme drives in dockcase enclosures. ive got no issues reading or writing to the cards in either exfax or apfs.
When comparing the power consumption of the Samsung 990 Pro SSD, which is rated at 5.5W, to other high-performance SSDs, it appears to have relatively lower power requirements. The iPhone 15 PM, on the other hand, has a maximum output of 4.5W. However, I have concerns about whether the Samsung 990 Pro will work with a SABRENT enclosure without a powered dock.
if you are speaking to me, i cant comment on sabrent, only the dockcase model i use. ive had no issues using it with a 4tb 990 gen 4 ssd from samsung @@shakilde
Brilliant Dave, answered all my questions. Looking forward to your recommendation on a good SSD solution for 'common' interchangable use with the iPhone 15 and other devices etc... Sad that I currently have all Gen4 SSD's and enclosures for my Desktop/laptop so sadly I will need to buy some new bits.
Hi. Peter. I'm glad the video was useful 👍 Yes, it's a pity that there's issues with Gen4. I'm the same as you, my main externals use Gen4. I would have recommended the P5 and Sabrent for a good daily external but it looks like Crucial don't do the P5 anymore. As soon as I find something that's readerly available and tested it, I'll do a video. Cheers, Dave.
Alright, Tone. Yes, odd that the champion of Thunderbolt has issues with it on their flagship phone. They should have just went straight to Thunderbolt 4 on all the iPhone 15 series and not messed about with USB-C only. Cheers, Dave.
The Sabrent mount the gen.3 M.2 BUT... DOES IT WORK??? IN MY EXPERIENCE IT WORKS WITH IPHONE APP BUT NOT IN BLACKMAGIC APP! When recording in ProRes 422 in Blackmagic only few second of recording sometimes work... longer take, NOT! The only case I can work is an ORICO Model TCM2-C3. And the curious fact is that IT WORK WELL EVEN WITH A M.2 4TB OF 30$ BOUGHT ON ALIEXPRESS!!!
I did further tests... It seems that the problem does not depend on the two cases used but on the M.2 memories. Strangely, the 30 euro M.2 bought on Aliexpress seems to have no problems!!! On the contrary, the much more expensive Samsung 970 EVO plus (gen 3 x 4) is continually mounted and unmounted!!!
Hi. The problem is power. When the combination of an enclosure and SSD require more power than the iPhone can supply, it won’t see the SSD. This is why your cheap SSD works and not your Samsung. Your Samsung SSD in combination with the power that’s needed for the enclosure, is simply too much for the iPhone. However, your cheap SSD requires less power, so the combination of it and your enclosure are below the maximum power the iPhone can supply, which is why it works. Cheers, Dave.
My Orico USB 3.2 Enclosure with a Crucial P3 (Gen3) does NOT work on iPhone. Works perfectly fine on my Macbook Air, but does not get detected on iPhone. The lights are flashing on my enclosure which shows iphone is powering it, but it simply does not get detected.
Yes, unfortunately, this is a problem with the power delivery on the iPhone 15. The only way to get around that would be to use a powered USB C hub or dock. Cheers, Dave.
@@DavidHarry Thanks for responding. My hunch is that has to do with a power delivery problem. The Crucial P3 ended up working somehow, but it resulted in really choppy ProRes videos. I'm guessing it was because of the lack of DRAM in the SSD since it uses HMB, therefore, would have terrible write performance. I swapped to an Intel 670P (Gen3) with DRAM and it never detects despite me trying to format into exFAT and APFS. The only way I was able to get this drive to be detected was to plug both my iPhone and SSD into my TB3 dock, which still led to the choppy video ProRes problems. I've also tried all kinds of USB cables too. This is really frustrating to deal with.
@@JohnnyT1994 Yes, there’s some really odd and frustrating stuff going on. The only guaranteed way that I have found so far is to use an “off the shelf” drive like the T7, which are designed to be low power. Or, use a very bog standard USB C enclosure to either SATA or NVMe and use very basic Gen3 NVMe SSDs or SATA SSDs. As soon as you use a Gen4 NVMe SSDs you can’t guarantee anything and using a USB4 or Thunderbolt4/USB4 enclosures, almost always ends with problems. I’ve just done a video showing that using a powered hub or dock is the only way to use certain drives but even then Thunderbolt4 hubs that support USB4 can still be an issue. I’ll have that video up soon. I’ve also found a good, low price and fast option, using the Sabrent enclosure and a Samsung 980. This can do between 850-900MBs for read and write with a large 72GB file, I’ll do a video soon. There’s probably also something with DRAM that gets in the way as well, as you’ve said. Certain combinations that I’ve tried didn’t work with DRAM SSDs, this is maybe why the 980 works. I’m not too sure but I think HMB can also be an issue, as I’m not sure portable OSs like iOS, are able to assign host RAM as a buffer, so maybe HMB SSDs don’t perform as well but do seem to work. I’ll have to look into that one a bit more. Cheers, Dave.
Hi. You are very welcome. I try to do this wherever possible for people who understand the basics and who do not need to see the examples to understand what’s going. Basically, for people like you 👍 Cheers, Dave.
@@LAGRIND Hi. You are very welcome. I will show a powered hub/dock setup soon that allows all the drives to work, due to the extra power. However, this is only useful when at a desktop or indoors. There are solutions for shooting outdoors etc. But it’s far too much hassle and basically negates the portability aspect of using the phone for shooting video or backing up outdoors. Cheers, Dave.
The real question is, do the SD8G2 phones like the S23U use Gen 4 and if they do, are they faster than the drives you can use on the iPhone 15 Pros in real life?
My Sony Xperia 1 V works with enclosed gen 4 nvme without need for additional power. Generally phones cannot provide power to all kinds of drives, you can well try to connect old school HDDs, its not gonna work.
I think the problem is the max 4.5 watt power delivery and I think that because my Transend ESD310 SSD does up to 700MB read write then connected to my Mac but only around 400MB when connected to my iPhone. The drives that did not work might need to much power and that is most likely also the reason why Apple did not add Thunderbolt to the pro and pro max
Yes, the problem is not enough power from the iPhone. Thunderbolt would actually have been the option here, as it can deliver about three times the power of USB. Cheers, Dave.
Hi man. Great video! I also was looking for a ssd nvme which will work with Iphone 15 pro. After research, I bought enclosure from US, for 2230 ssd. I ask WD, Crucial and Corsair, about power consuming for their 2230 ssd. Only Corsair confirms their MP Core Mini 2230 consuming 4 Watts. I ordered and soon will try it. I hope will work...
Hey sir! Thank you for your content! I have the Acasis 40gb/s enclosure with out the fan. The m.2 that input in there is a pcie gen5/4 Samsung 990 evo. It is D-ramless. In my mind that alone may take less power. I went to the Apple Store and hooked it up and it worked. I didn’t try writing but it played every 4k60 file I had on there. About a minute’s worth. Have you tried sense 17.4.1~ update? Ik with updates in the past with Apple things change with expansion compatibility. Anyways thanks.
I’m having issues with my SanDisk extreme pro 1TB ssd not working. Works fine on my iPad, and worked for a little bit on the iPhone 15 pro max, then just wouldn’t load anymore. Any suggestions. I tried restarting the phone, and didn't work. Sometimes it shows up, other times it doesn’t, and even when it does show up it wont load in. Thanks for this video, very informative.
Hi. It looks like the phone isn’t able to power your SSD, the same issue I have with some of my SSDs. The only way to guarantee 100% connection and data transfers is to use a powered hub or dock, then the hub or dock will power the drive and the iPhone will see it. I’ll be doing another video showing that soon with a recommendation for a dock. Cheers, Dave.
Well done, not enough views. :) But helpful thank you! I like the Sabrient enclosure with the crucial wondering if it is needed though with the speeds. They are always on sale and great quality.
Hi, Tristan. I have some more videos coming up which show that the Phone, as fast and as good as it is, simply will not reach the full speed of its USB C bus. I’m now starting to suspect that its internal storage on its SoC may not be the same type used as what’s on the SoCs for the iPad Pro and Macs. Basically, I think the internal storage speed is the bottleneck. So, because the phone will never read/write at the full speed, it does mean that more expensive and faster drives are maybe a bit wasted on it. Because of that, the trade off in using a good basic USB C drive would probably make more sense, or at least better financial sense. So because of that, yes, the Sabrent enclosure is a very practical option. I’m still testing to see what is a good recommendation for an SSD to pair with the Sabrent. The P5 is good but it is no longer a current product in the Crucial range, so wouldn’t be a good recommendation. I may try a P3 Plus and see how that it. Whatever I end up with as the recommendation, it won’t be the fastest possible, for the reasons I’ve just explained but it will be good as far as general speeds are concerned and will be good value for money. Keep an eye on my video titles, they are usually very descriptive of what the video is about, and as soon as I’ve worked out the best combination, you’ll see it in the titles. Just bear in mind, my channel isn’t about phones or doing speed tests, I’m only doing these videos because the iPhone is popular at the moment and I’m obviously trying to get more views and more income. I generally cover tech in a wider sense, although, I have gravitated to a lot of Apple and Mac stuff. My next bunch of videos are likely to be boring videos about cases, screen protectors etc. So maybe ignore those ones and just watch the boring tech ones 😆 Cheers, Dave.
Just try any dock connector with power source and all drive will be visible, it is limited by power requirements which can’t be powered by the iPhone, I can do a video shortly
Hey so I came here because my 4th gen SSD was NOT showing up on my I Phone 15 Pro Max, so what I had to do was just format it correctly! I went on to my Mac > Disk Utility > Select Desired SSD > Erase (and click the dropdown for ExFAT ! So now it is formatted correctly so you I phone will pick it up now! Easy pz
@@user-xv1vm5xc1f Hi. If you’re talking about the latest iOS update has sorted your problem, that’s great 👍 Unfortunately for me, even with the latest update on both my 15 and 15 Pro Max, I still can’t use some of my SSDs without using the extra power via a dock. Cheers, Dave.
@@DavidHarry surprisingly I have used a wall powered docking station as well as a powered Anker 555 usb-c hub with no luck 🫤 Update: With looking into the issue further once I connected to my main PC there was a "disk error" windows did a scan and now I'm able to directly connect my crucial x8 to my iPhone 15 pro and record directly to SSD via blackmagic app and natively
There is a way to solve all these problems! I personally tested it! Connect a USB C hub with power delivery port to the iPhone. Connect a power bank to this port. From this moment the power bank powers the iPhone and all the peripherals that will be connected to it, including SSDs. Since there are no more power problems ALL SSDs work perfectly!
Actually it IS the Cable. I just used my usb-c to usb-c cable that came with my iPhone 15 max pro, the cable feels like it is made of cloth. Works perfectly with my 4TB Sandisk Extreme.
This length of video to tell us what we know, more than 4.5W no worky, far better magsafe enclosures out there Hagibis, Acasis, that take smaller SSDs. Apple can and probably will fix this in a software update to support gen 4
The iPhone 15 Pro Max supports reverse charging via USB-C at 4.5W. That's new for all iPhone 15 models. just make sure your usb ssd max power is below that and you will be fine..
Yeah man here’s the deal, you’re a bit off base, I have an acasis- non fan model and a 990 pro 2tb, exfat, here’s what you do - plug it into a dongle (juiced nova or the like) with 3.2 gen 2x1 and power passthrough, I’m getting 1GBps writes and 850 MBps reads consistently, which is close to max of the 3.2 gen 2x1 bus on the iPhone. USB 4 is backwards compatible, all of those enclosures default to usb 3.2 when the device uses that. So just add a dongle and add power It is twice as fast Also keep in mind there are ZERO SSD external options that have a decent size SLC cache. The 990 2TB is like 200 Gigs or so for SLC cache, that’s where you slow down a lot on the all in one solutions
What a diappointment. excellent video but I found it too late. didnt expect the iphone to be this half baked as usually apple takes a while to implement things but when it does it does a decent job. Wish id known about this before committing to a MAIWO K1695 and a 990pro. I have had a couple of occasions where it does show up and connect but then reading and writing fails almost immediately. Annoying. Maybe a software update will correct this in the future. I also tried this with a dumb usb2.0 cable and that also fails in the same way, but works on mac/windows. It must be the chipset and not a power thing.
Hi, Adrian. Yes, it’s a real pain. I have now done many more tests and can confirm that it is a power issue, not chipset. Apple could resolve this issue if they wanted. All they would have to do is a firmware update with one of this iOS updates, that allows the USB C port to send more current/power. Given that the iPad Mini 6, which is older, has an older and less powerful SoC and has an older USB C port and implementation, can do this. There is absolutely no reason why the iPhone can’t. What’s more. Apple should have just put Thunderbolt 4 on the phone, as they do with the more recent iPad Pro. TB4 by design has more standard power delivery compared to USB’s standard power delivery. Plus this port could have been TB4 and USB 4 compatible, so the best of all worlds. Unfortunately and while this is generally a great phone. It’s just Apple being Apple. Cheers, Dave.
I got a "sabrent rocket q gen3 2tb pcie" and an adapter from "Lemorele" nvme to usb c, nothing the iphone dont care, but if I connect an old hdd with adapter usb a and another adapter usb a to usb c, the iphone recognize, start even recording, but no data written (ok a 5400 rpm maybe is better for building house) but no one ssd is being recognized from the iphone
i have a corsair mp600 mini 2230 nvme 1tb ssd, using the sharge disk enclosure. and it works fine with my iphone 15 pro max without any additional power source. i also tried it with my old android phone but it doesn’t work unless i connect it to a power source.
i read the comments about gen 4 ssds having problems on iphone 15, but mine works. tho i haven’t used it with large files i transferred a 1gb video and it was really fast
@@leeartrinlee5376 thanks for confirming! Guess I’ll stick with the setup that you tested, as for big files transfer, any drawback in heat when using the sharge disk or does the fan really help, hope it’s not all a marketing visual gimmick :/
Sorry if I’m late to the party but there is no problem with anything gen 4 SSD for iOS all you have to do is erase or format it in you Mac or PC that’s all.
Okay so I have a 1TB Intel 670p and a 2TB Intel 670p. The 1TB in a UGreen or Sabrent enclosure works fine with my iPhone 15 Pro, but the 2TB isn’t detected! What gives?
I’m using 1TB sandisk extreme pro. I discover that I have to eject properly the ssd from my MacBook pro in order for my iPhone 16 pro max to read the ssd. I don’t know why my iPhone 16 pro max doesn’t read my ssd if I removed it directly from my MacBook pro. I hope this helps to those who are using sandisk extreme pro that are having an issue
"That's why I never consider iOS products. I see it with my daughters-they buy Apple hardware because it's trendy, but they constantly have some kind of issue.
This is NOT true, I’ve got a gen4 mvme 1T, I’ve tested it and it’s been working fine. I didn’t come across any issues, regarding iPhone 15 not being able to detected it.
:) I think your nvme cases are not supporting gen 4 nvme drives ;), nvme gen 4 is much more power consumers, and proper nvme gen 4 cases you tested required additional power source, iPhone can’t provide that much, it’s designed for 3.2 USB C standard and can give up to 29W ;) , and USB c gen 4 uses about 100-240w :)))) So if you use additional power source I think iPhone will recognise gen 4 But will use as gen 3
Next year these a*****es will sell you iPhone 16 Pro with Thunderbolt 4 / USB 4 port which will have max compatibility with all enclosures and upto gen4 drives.
Hm. Well in the vernacular it todays youth which allows for only two extreme states of existence , the title of this video is dog shite. You’re using the iPhone 15 Pro Max, not the 15. And it’s not USB C that isn’t working (that is a physical connection specification) but rather it seems like USB 4 (the signaling specification) may not be supported. The iPhone is specified to use USB 3.2 Gen 2. Can the enclosures not switch to USB 3.2 standard or are they all maybe locked in USB 4? I’d suggest fixing the title to be correct lest click bait was the intent.
Using the same vernacular by those who are typically and woefully technically inept, you are talking total dog shite. The title is in reference to the range as they all have the same problems, see my other videos. Plus, your understanding of USB4 and its total backwards compatibility with all preceding USB standards, is total dog shite. Cheers, Dave.
Yes, it could have been but then it wouldn't have had all the proof of the issues and the extensive sampling, plus all the extra information. Cheers, Dave.
@@colors5108 Hi. Thank you for your comment 👍 Yes, the conclusion was said immediately for those who don't need all the explaining. It's quite a balance making RUclips videos about anything technical. Short videos don't explain enough for those who need more detail and long videos are too long for those who already know a lot. This is why I try to sum the conclusion at the beginning, as you fully understand. Also, many viewers don't fully understand all the technical points, so more detail goes a long way to help understand what's going on. Again, thank you for your comment 👍 Cheers, Dave.

@@ShortStoryInspiration I connected the hub to a power source so the ssd could use that instead of the iphone ^^

My sandisk extreme pro portable doesn't work. So sad I was looking forward to using it with my iPhone 15 pro max
With the pd plugged in it works.
cuz its fucking 2024 this shit is unecessary af. . . so lame
However, as you mentioned, my ProRes videos transfer very slowly, and can’t even read them
Properly without lagging.
Mine is a SanDisk SDSSDE30-2T00-G25 2TB and it does not work, i'm trying all day to record 4kLOG and it just does not work :(

My iphone 15 can see external hard drive, but when i select photos and try to click 'save', i cant click it. Do you have some idea what is problem?
This video was exactly what I was looking for. Thank you!
Hi, Simon. I’m glad the video was helpful 👍 Cheers, Dave.
Erasing the data from brand new ssd worked for me.

the sabrent enclosures are good as you say.
Hi. Yes, they are great. They're just as fast as any other 10Gb/s enclosure but are way easier to use than most of them and I think they look really neat as well. They also come with a nice short USB C to USB C cable and an A to C cable. Cheers, Dave.
Thank you so much for figuring this out and detailing it all. I’ve been having a very frustrating time with my Acasis enclosure and 15 pro.
You are very welcome 👍 At least you now know that it’s not your enclosure that’s problem.
I think that would need more tha the 4.5 watt power delivery @@DavidHarry
David, wonder if a software update will allow the gen 4 enclosures to be used.
@@KevinMuldoon Alright, Kevin. And what a "new" feature it will be 😆 Cheers buddy. Dave.
Could it be that only M series processors support thunderbolt??? so much dumbness on the internet
It never will.
I have a Samsung MVMe SSD 2230 gen 3 and my iPhone 15 pro does not see it. Any suggestions?
Assuming you are using a format that the phone understands, it sounds like the SSD needs more power than the phone can supply. You may have to use a powered dock or hub.
Well I'm sure this be useful to someone wondering why their external storage isn't recognized.
I do love those Sabrent USB 3.2 M.2 enclosures. I've got 4 of them for my laptops. I also have 3 of their USB 3.1 SATA adapters. At the time they came out they were the fastest adapter being sold.
Alright, Mike. There's already loads of people complaining about their iPhones not seeing their SSD storage. I know this video is very long but it does go through a whole bunch of examples to prove the point. using combination of Acasys TBU405Pro M1 + WD Black SN 770 2TB formatted to APFS i'm able to get the iphone 15 pro to read the ssd.
Yes, with certain Gen 3 SSDs the iPhone may see the drive. However, when writing large amounts of data, it may struggle. It definitely won’t see the drive if there’s a Gen 4 SSD inside it. Cheers, Dave.
@@DavidHarry the thing is, on the website SN 770 is being listed as a Gen 4 SSD.
I think because 2tb is the mx supported
They might all work with 15 pro max ... What do u think... With faster speed
Hi,did you try a hub with power?
It will work
Hi
I have an Acasis 10in1 HUB with a NVME M.2 Samsung 990 PRO 1 TB.
This video is NOT misleading , I wasted a lot of time with ssds that didn’t work
Great work with this testing.
No, not everything is readable even with a powered hub.

Sad that I currently have all Gen4 SSD's and enclosures for my Desktop/laptop so sadly I will need to buy some new bits.
Hi. Peter. I'm glad the video was useful 👍 Yes, it's a pity that there's issues with Gen4. I'm the same as you, my main externals use Gen4. that was very detailed and explained! It is ironic because wasn't it Apple who helped developed thunderbolt technology?
Alright, Tone. Yes, odd that the champion of Thunderbolt has issues with it on their flagship phone. They should have just went straight to Thunderbolt 4 on all the iPhone 15 series and not messed about with USB-C only. Cheers, Dave.

What format does the nvme ssd has to be ?
@@DavidHarry I agree!!!

@@LAGRIND Hi. You are very welcome. I will show a powered hub/dock setup soon that allows all the drives to work, due to the extra power. However, this is only useful when at a desktop or indoors. The real question is, do the SD8G2 phones like the S23U use Gen 4 and if they do, are they faster than the drives you can use on the iPhone 15 Pros in real life?
Hi. The S23 Ultra also has similar issue. I’ll do a video soon. Cheers, Dave.

Excellent. My NVME M.2 absolutely does not work.
Unfortunately, I have a bunch of NVME drives that don't work either.
Yes but it would also drain the battery way faster and the USB is already very power hungry as is.

Hi. It looks like the phone isn’t able to power your SSD, the same issue I have with some of my SSDs. The only way to guarantee 100% connection and data transfers is to use a powered hub or dock, then the hub or dock will power the drive and the iPhone will see it.
So just add a dongle and add power
It is twice as fast
Also keep in mind there are ZERO SSD external options that have a decent size SLC cache. The 990 2TB is like 200 Gigs or so for SLC cache, that’s where you slow down a lot on the all in one solutions
Nope, you’re are bit off base, ther are other issues at hand beyond powering the external drive.
Hi, is it still working flawlessly? MP600 MINI 1TB (Gen4) PCIe x4 NVMe M.2 2230 SSD + Sharge disk without the need for any additional tools?
@@GigglesMcReels i tested it again today and it still works on my iphone, it’s basically plug and play, even the fan on the ssd case works
i read the comments about gen 4 ssds having problems on iphone 15, but mine works. tho i haven’t used it with large files i transferred a 1gb video and it was really fast
I‘d guess it‘s a power thing, not a cable or gen 3/4 thing 🤔.
Nope, definitely a power thing.
I should have watch this earlier. I just bought a new NVME SSD and an Ugreen eclosure. My iphone 15 pro max cannot read. I believe my NVME is gen 4 :(
What NVME did you buy?
I bought Dynabook Boost AX7600@@shakilde
you need power for the gen 4.
No. You need the update
Can u please name the ssd and the enclosure you’re using. Are u using any external power delivery😊
maybe my phone is too new but that BROWSE tag is non existant..
You've just proven it's not the cases 😆
Try with a power bank
Doesn't work you need a powered hub or dock and even then some drives still don't work.
remove the password in sandisk ssd it will work
Next year these a*****es will sell you iPhone 16 Pro with Thunderbolt 4 / USB 4 port which will have max compatibility with all enclosures and upto gen4 drives.
This literally could have been a 3 minute video
Yes, it could have been but then it wouldn't have had all the proof of the issues and the extensive sampling, plus all the extra information. Cheers, Dave.
Unnecessary comment. He gave the conclusion in the first few seconds, you didn't have to watch past that.
I stand corrected... it could have been a 'few' seconds long, thanks for pointing that out@@colors5108
And you could have just leave the video in two minutes and leave others that are interested in the actual testing watch the video. Have a good day.
iphone is a piece of shit basically is what this video proves. . .
Talk too much
And?
