    Tyranid “lore” is more like a detailed nature documentary. You don’t have characters to follow, but you can follow creatures, or swarms, or invasion stages etc. wish GW expanded on it further.

      In one of the old rule books I first saw reference to Inquisitor Kryptman and the vague references made to his liberal use of Exterminatus and the galaxy encompasing threat of the Tyranid was intoxicating. I have loved them ever sense, my first Space Marines were a group co-opted by the Ordo Xenos specifically to hunt for a way to combat the Tyranids, the Leviathan box got me back into the hobby after 20 years.

    On thing that I was hearing about and was touched on at 35:32 is that if they just changed all instances of ‘below half strength’ to ‘at half strength or below’ it would make so many underperforming things just that bit better, battleshock, Sisters, Crusher Stampede, etc.

    Putting on my tinfoil hat, I can imagine GW purposefully making Crusher Stampede (and similar detachments) bad so to dissuade people from making armies with a few, cost-efficient models instead of splurging out twice as much money on hordes and specialized expensive models.

    Assimilation Swarm seems to be heavily lore-driven, since it's very specifically units that are supposed to have a role in eating and digesting resources. That's why it includes Pyrovores and not Biovores (Pyrovores "predigest" stuff by shooting it with acid, Biovores are just artillery), and why the Norn Assimilator doesn't really make sense (despite the name it doesn't really do any assimilation).
    I think there's an interesting "protect the payload" theme there where you're trying to protect these more support-oriented units and get them on objectives, but I don't think it totally works out. The Haruspex kind of throws it off since it's not a very support-y unit, plus it ends up feeling more like a regular buff to those very specific units rather than a strategic goal for your army overall.
    I kind of like it but it does feel very niche, which is unfortunate when there's other more prominent subfaction archetypes missing. It's also a little weird because Nids already have a very prominent "protect the KEYWORD units" thing going on with synapse.

      I think the annoying thing with the norn is that it's named "assimilator" for no reason. Sounds cool, but the title is completely at odds with what it actually is and does. Should have saved that name for a future model.

  • @PrinceBoo21

    I know it's not related to the actual detachments, but one of the things that pissed me off the most about the codex was the removal of distinct melee weapons on some of the units, when they could've just copy/pasted the stats for them after writing them once. Raveners and Warriors have a ton of possible weapons, like talons, claws, swords, lash whips, and etc. Both Raveners and Warriors melee options have been reduced to "Bio-weapon" and it has a single statline despite the differences in playstyle these weapons allowed in 9th Ed.
    Imagine if they took the thunder hammer, lightning claws, chainsword, and other famous space marine weapons, gave them a single statline and just called it "Weapon" in the codex. People would lose their shit and it'd be stupid as hell, so I really hate that nobody has ever said anything about it in any review of Nids yet

    With complete sincerity, if you were to make similar breakdown videos for every codex that came out, I would happily watch each and every one of them. As someone relatively inexperienced with the tabletop side of Warhammer, I find the information a lot easier to digest when you break it down than it would be if I tried to force through it myself - and plus, you mixing the codex talk with bits of lore and your experience with game design is dang entertaining. Also props to the editor for all the text boxes and cards and crap in this one.

  • @Akiosama1009

    I think it’s interesting that the Tyranids Detatchments are almost all keyword focused (only true exception is Invasion Fleet, while the Space Marine detachments only have one that is unit locked (1st Company). Even the Ironstorm Spearhead detachment- the VEHICLE detachment - has its rule affecting all units in the army. GW still has a ways to go on how to line up rules and fluff, and trying to balance rules between codices. (Can’t wait to see how many detachment choices non-compliant Space Marine Chapters get in the end compared to Necron and AdMech’s five. They already have eight.)
    Edit - just realized that the 1st Company rule still works on all units - only their stratagems and enhancements are unit restricted. Go figure.

    Assimilation Swarm has won at least 1 tournament, and the Norns seem to be decent picks in it. Put one on its target objective for the 5+ FNP and boosted OC with a Harvester next to it and it will live a bit longer and hold that objective. Synaptic Nexus is also performing well.

  • @gstellar96
    @gstellar96 11 месяцев назад +6

    Assimilation swarm is a tricky one because unlike vanguard and endless swarms they are the focus but theyre not the beatstick of the force, they're support platforms you protect to keep the rest of your stuff healthy and a lot of your rules protect and make the support of your harvesters better. I agree there needs to be more than 4 datasheets but I dont think making more than half your list harvesters is fhe point.

    After research. You can only heal a unit once a turn. But, running triple mortrex, triple rippers, double psychophage, swarmlord, barbed heorodule, norn emissary, brood genestealers, winged prime with melee warriors, and a unit of barbs for disruption. This list for the harvester faction will work because it's got monsters, beaters, and healing.

  • @TheHollowMyth
    @TheHollowMyth 11 месяцев назад +4

    Here's the thing I didn't hear mentioned. Parasite of Montrex can spawn rippers, and I think you can run multiple parasites. In the harvester healer faction, that is amazing. Combine that with triple biovores and you can have a regenerating wounds back field, and you can stack norn emissary in center with spawned rippers around him stacking healing.

    here is how to simply fix crusher stampede IF you want to change rulings:
    Detachment rule:
    Each time a TYRANIDS MONSTER model from your army makes an attack, add 1 to the Strength characteristic of that attack.
    If that model’s unit is below its Starting Strength, add 2 to the Strength characteristic of that attack instead.
    explaination:
    this will get ALOT of mediocre strength 9 weapons form tyranids up to that crucial S10, OFTEN giving that +1 to wound no matter what, but without it beeing guaranteed, but at least giving a bonus right from the start. and then, when damaged, which is already really hard to do, you get some weapons to S11 to REALLY be able to destroy most heavy armor target, what crusher stampede SHOULD be able to do. removing the below half condition completely since that just NEVER happens, if a model is below half strength it is literally already dead in 99% of all cases.
    Also note that this will count towards melee AND shooting, to make some use of these (right now) terrible and useless venom cannons.

  • @lizard56

    I think both versions of subfaction discussion is interesting. Like a “Propaganda” episode for the flavors subfaction wise and the “Detachment/Codex run through” where you discuss the Detachments in a Codex.
    I have to disagree with Brad that we need a “Swarmy one, a shooty one, the basic one”. While a lot of the lore factions do feel Bottom Up in that represent those portions.
    But what I want out of the Detachments is representing wings of the army. The Necrons preview makes it sound like thats what they are doing. Leaders matter, nobles turbo, Destroyers, Canopteks and Crypteks, the teleport/Monolith one.

    I think the best move for tyranid lore is actually that fan-fiction of The Thing from the “the things” perspective where it’s more or less unaware of the characters and doesn’t view them as prey per se but as a similar collection of matter as it’s self that doesn’t understand that it would be better utilized if it congregated with it and is sad and frustrated with how much the individual pieces form into things that can use tools and fight against it.

  • @ShikiRen
    @ShikiRen 11 месяцев назад

    On the topic of a Hive Mind viewpoint; On one hand, I'd so, so love a "A splinter of the hive mind is lost and slowly builds itself up" or "Using biomass genetic information X resulted in a bioform too independant so it forms a splinter hivemind" story; on the other, that would take away that lovecraftian "fear of the unknown" schtick... I wasn't around when Zoats were a thing, but sometimes I really wish they were still around.
    Also, I feel like the Crusher Stampede detachment rule might work if Tyranid Monsters hadf soem form of overloading, where they could risk taking wounds for a more accurate hit, or a stronger hit, or maybe more hits; that would then fuel the rule (and would in general help a lot with Tyranid being laughably bad at killing things. The part where eg. 2 Carnifexes can never profit from most of the detachment rule still has to be fixed though, obviously).

      @arrowstrike1174 11 месяцев назад

      @Chaunwilkerson I'm looking at it more from a game play perspective. The detachment has no leadership currently available, and the Parasite makes Ripper Swarms. A unit that already has Harvester. The Parasite seems to be the best option for the detachment already.

      @Chaunwilkerson 11 месяцев назад

      @@arrowstrike1174 The thing is, it's a lore based subfaction like Synaptic Nexus, not a playstyle subfaction like Endless Swarms or Crusher Stampede. The Assimilation Swarm is the most underrated detachment in our codex right now. It does a lot of powerful things. And you cant really make any more units harvesters for a lot of reasons. If you play 3 of each unit you have only about 900 points of models AND you can heal 12 different units each com.and phase. In addtion to this you can heal infintry at FULL wounds it is pretty crazy when you realize you can return up to 2 T8 4W models per turn. Tyrant guard are pretty overcosted BUT when you can regen them its wild. You can also bring back models to Zoanthropes.
    If you say increased the pool to 8 data sheets like you suggest you would then be able to regenerate 24 units on each of your command phase.
    Obviously your opponent will focus 1 unit down at a time however you are able to run 1 haurspex, 1 psychophage, 1 squad of 3 pyrovores and 1 ripper on each objective. If your opponent focus fires down 1 haurspex at a time you will be scoring like crazy.
    Best to worst Detatchments: (From someone who has 10+ games with all of them)
    Invasion Fleet (Detachment rule and strats are just so flexable)
    Synaptic Nexus (The real monster Mash)
    Vanguard Invaders (High skill and high risk high reward)
    Assimilation Swarm (Just forces you to play 3 of our best units)
    Unending swarm (our battle line doesnt really do anything vs +2 saves)
    We only have 5 detatchments.

      You noticed versions 1 and 4. You missed the middle two changes that bothered me more. This iteration makes it way easier to render revisions of the episode in case we find issues in the first attempt.

    Old one eye will keep losing the crusher stampede buffs when he heals. If he has 2 attached carnifexes, he gets +1 to wound after both of them drop and he’s at half health…then he heals and loses it.
    I had an idea you touched on with the psychographs. What is the psychograph of each detachment and do they match the psycograph of the overall army? T’au are kinda Timmy but Kau’yon isn’t.

    • @MrShukaku1991
      @MrShukaku1991 11 месяцев назад

      It's worse than that. You don't get the +1 to hit until both carnifexes are dead and Old one eye is wounded. Leaders count for the model count of starting strength, so 2 carnis and one eye have a starting strength of 3. Half or less means 1 guy left, but if that last guy is old one eye, the leader rule makes him count as his own unit then, so he has to get wounded to start getting the rules.

    • @Kantohammer
      @Kantohammer 11 месяцев назад

      You’ll get +1 to hit when the first bodyguard carnifex goes down, but you’ll lose it when the second goes.

    The Hive Fleets _used_ to have lore, back when subfactions were given mechanical weight. But now that in-universe subfactions have been decoupled from Detachments, GW apparently decided to just... _not include_ any of that lore. So if you wanted to learn about Hive Fleets like Kraken, Behemoth, Jormangandr, Gorgon, Ouroboros, etc, you just can't anymore. The 10th ed book has nothing for you.

    • @mouthwide0pen
      @mouthwide0pen 9 месяцев назад

      Subfactions still do for some armies, I think, we just dont have detachments for the ones this is the case for. I'm pretty sure the Ork and Custodes detachments are named after subfactions.

    People were/are joking a lot about leadership but if you keep your eyes peeled in the codex, you notice that you can pretty easily spam ld tests with -1,-2 and even -3 using units that are in every list, like deathleaper, Haruspex, Neurotyrant and Neurolictor and every detachment has something to capitalize on this further. Tyranids leadership shenenigans are no joke

    Made up a assimilation swarm list that I might play, didn't mess with load outs and focused more on the models themselves, (as a complete noob non competition player) and honestly I think some parasites of mortex to try and earn more rippers and some mines and a sporocyst for some don't go there. Something else to point out about assimilation swarm is the cost/availability of harvester units.
    The box for the exocrine/haruspex is probably the most out of stock box in the nids arsenal and are going for silly money on the secondary market. Pyrovores are $50 for 30 points and you probably want 6-9 of them, so you're looking at $300-$450 for 180-270 points which is ridiculous. Psychophages havent had their own release yet, and sure you might be able to get them on the secondary reselling market, but its weird that theyve limited harvesters to a few models, one of which you just cant buy straight up.

    For crusher stampede, they should do a 3cp buff thats only allowed once per game, where if you use it you lose shadow in the warp, but for the whole army, for the whole turn you activate it, all models weapons have twin linked and d3 damage, but every attack becomes hazardous so you can either kill your opponent with kaiju monstrous shenanigans, but you may lose everything in the process. And you only get it for one turn. Note, the d3 damage will only apply to weapons that deal 1 or 2 damage per successful attack.

    GW did the same thing with the 1st company detachment in Space Marines. They think that the datasheets are so strong that the detachment can be lackluster or they will be OP. The problem is that they already have a balancing mechanic... points. So now you have a few strong monsters that cannot hold their own.

    someone should try to come up with subfaction lore for the endless swarms of the hive mind? i could try, but i can't guarantee it'd be as full as a lot of lore nuts might want. as someone that started with tyranids, coming from the tyranid perspective could be fun

    Comparing Magic rulesets and 40k is almost unfair, in the sense that only one of them seems to have a rules team that has a basic grasp of the consequences of their core, unchangeable systems. Nobody understand their game better than the team designing Magic, if just because when the game's internals are misunderstood, the game becomes an unplayable mess that nobody wants to buy. They still mess up, but comparing modern sets from anything in in the first 10 years shows how much the game design has evolved.
    40k's core systems have more spikey bits than the mouth of a psychophage, but it sure seems that the design team is unaware of the issues that have been there forever. It's crazy what they release. The most generous thing I can think here is that they have far fewer designers, and that they are so overworked that they have no time to think about anything.
