Ya this doesn't happen all the time on powder coated pits but it does happen on every brand unfortunately. I can't say that it still won't happen but out of all the pits I have had none of them have peeled. Thanks for watching and leaving this valuable comment for others to read!!
Found this vid 10 mins into starting the burn off on my 780 at 350 degrees. I immediately turned it down to 250 degrees and am finishing the process by your instructions. Hopefully this helps avoid any paint peeling. Thanks for the great videos and advice!
I just bought a 780 Pro last weekend. Thanks to your video I just completed my Burn Off. Thanks for the video. I'm feeling much more confident in my first cook. Thanks again
I just bought my 780 and it will be delivered in the next few days. I love your instructions on the seasoning of the grill. I will be following that, because I do not want the paint to bubble.
I just bought my first pellet grill, going to put it together today and will follow your instructions on the initial burn in. Thanks for the excellent instructions provided in this video.
Looks like a really good quality pellet grill! I like the idea of a reversible auger! Looking forward to seeing the results from your first cook with it.
Heck ya Rus! Now this pit isn't the top dog but I am very happy with the controller and the features Traeger offers on that but it is not the best pellet grill I have cooked on to date but hands down it stomps the heck out of the last Traeger I cooked on a couple years back!! So good jo Traeger on this controller for sure!!! I appreciate you watching Rus!! Have a great weekend and I am sure I will drop you a line to see how that pork brisket turns out!! Thanks for watching bro!!
Thank you. This was very informative and well organized. The slow heat up to 450 is definitely wise, paint needs that to cure . Also smart thinking with the lid Just finished your directions and now I'm ready to try this Traeger out and put it to the test. Thanks again
Thanks Darrin!! You know me I try my best to give you a little insight and some laughs!! Like always brother I appreciate you watching and I hope you have a great weekend!!
Just followed your instructions in the video to season my Traeger pellet smoker. Easy to follow and incrementing the test made much more sense than the Traeger video. Thanks for the advice. Will follow you on RUclips and Facebook.🙂
Great video, easy instructions, and thanks for the heads up about the paint. Just purchased my first Traeger Silverton 620 pellet grill and look forward to many cooks. Will definitely keep temp lower as the sales lady said to immediately start at 350 degrees to burn off the oils for 30 min and then 500 degrees for 30 min. I like your recommendation. 🤙🏽
I’ve owned several now Started off with the pro series and upgraded to the ironwood Like any other grill, again any other grill there are pros and cons They all have their place in bbq Let me say this As far as initial start up yes I would agree Now please don’t buy a pellet grill thinking it’s the end all to all end all’s of your cooking, cause they are not… If your skills are limited to opening a van of soup and adding water there grills will not make you to talk of the block However they are great if you want juicy moist tender meat with little effort you can’t go wrong Just remember as you transgress thru the stages there are lessons you have to master At the end of the day as long as you and yours enjoy the meal it’s all good no matter what your cooking on
Well said Robert!! Agree completely! The big thing I like about a pellet grill is 100% the convenience! Yes I miss the bbq that came of my old hand made offset but I do not miss the hours of tending a fire when I have other crap I need to get done!! I want an offset again to use once a month, yes I said once a month because with 2 teenage boys that are involved in every activity under the sun I just don't have all day to sit and drink beer in front of a fire box anymore. That being said when these 2 turds move out I will have something else to pass the time away until I got to finally hit the rack and get some shut eye!! Thanks for watching and I appreciate the comment!!
I too will add another small offset, just finding the right one, lost mine in a divorce years ago but I sure don’t miss the fire management side, I’m also going to build a whole hog pit but to be honest either one of those will get limited use. I follow a lot of you guys just to get ideas of what to cook next So let me part with this Don’t cook boring food and you won’t eat boring food BBQ on my Man
Fantastic video!! Definitely improved my learning curve for getting my smoker primed and ready so effortlessly by watching and following step by step. I appreciate your expert advice and for helping me to protect my investment! Thank you sir!🙂
Thanks for the video. I just bought the 780 pro and glad I found your method because it makes more sense. I've already watched this once and about to watch it once more and then going to do the burn off the dead broke BBQ way! Thanks a ton bro!!
Heck ya Kevin!! I just like to bring that temp up slowly just incase it needs to be cured a tad more! Thanks for watching and enjoy that new pit brother!!
Good looking pit, I’m with you on leaving the lid open, it can get crazy in there. That auger feature is cool, smart idea on their part. Awesome job brother!
Heck ya Charley!! I own a car that can drive for you but I still hold onto the wheel!! So I will always continue to keep the lid open until that pot is burning hot!! Thanks for watching like always brother!!!
Got my dad who’s turning 60 in a few days this model. Really tried to get him the Treager XL but sadly couldn’t afford it for payment plan. He’s an executive chef and had a really bad year last year with his health and job. But things are much better now so I got him this grill because some salesman at Costco sold him on the brand few years back and was all he would fantasize about getting even though with all my thorough research I know you mentioned the camp chef woodwind pro being a bit better. I couldn’t convince him. So got him this model since it’s the cheapest I could somewhat afford just gunna take a long time to pay off. But did all your steps for seasoning and baking and even though I’m a neighbor (Minnesotan) we had horrible rain all day today I managed to luck out and get a dry spell to do the seasoning times and temp increases and all worked out great! Tomorrow being Father’s Day he’ll be doing his first smoke and cook with it which he’s excited. He will be doing a rack of ribs and dry rubbed chicken wings. Great videos! Me and my dad watched a few of them while we waited on the cook times for seasoning. And really enjoyed them. I’m not sure if you’ve done a video on this. But I know other RUclipsrs have. But what brand of wood pellets do you tend to prefer? He is new to the pellet grilling scene so trying to be a helpful sous chef or whatever the term is for BBQing lol. Either way he’s excited for his first cook. And loves that he will be able to let it cook and monitor it from his phone since movement is what’s tough for him.
Did his first cook with ribs and chicken wings today. And 100% love it. The ribs he made turned out amazing! Same with his chicken wings. But the ribs which im normally not a fan of ribs (braces ruined my desire for them) but damn these were good. We even found some sauce at walmart which never thought id recommend something from there but a sauce brand called “Blues Hog” their “Raspberry Chipotle” was amazing to dab with the meat. But meat alone was great as well!
I use a lot of Blues Hog on my BBQ too! The Tennessee Red is ,y favorite dipping sauce but they do not sell it at Walmart!! ugh hahaha glad you are enjoying that pit!
@@DeadBrokeBBQ im gunna have to try that dip! He just finished his first brisket today he was worried because he’s never done brisket on bbq before. But turned out amazing!
New to pellet grills. Thanks for the video. Understand the reasoning for having the lid open, but my 575 never made it to 250 with the lid open. It topped out at 200 then cooled to about 125 before I closed the lid. Followed your steps after that 👍🏻
You don't leave the lid open the whole time bud, just until the white smoldering smoke stops and the fan kicks in. That only takes about 10 minutes and then you close it up. Thanks for watching!
WOW DUDE that was an amazing pellet burn-off 101. Loved the temp probe too early tip. Next filming an you turn the cameras around so I can see what you're looking at. Awesome job buddy.
Thanks Tommy!! Sure I can give you a behind the scenes again. I did a quick one on my ZGrills assembly/burn off video. Plus I do plan to do a video showing how i make videos someday in the far far future!!!! hahaha Thanks for watching brother!!
Hey I just bought me a 780 Traeger wish I would’ve watch this video before I did my burn off I didn’t do it exactly like you did I did it exactly like the manufacturer said to do it but I’m gonna be a follower I subscribed and can’t wait to see more videos
First thanks for watching! Second you got a nice little pit! Third you are probably still ok but I just prefer to break that paint in slower. Thanks for watching and joining the Nation!!!
Did this exact burn off. Did it a second time to 2x set the season which I do with all grills/cast irons. On the second season the paint over the burner on the lid and adjacent barrel lip started to chip. Welp, guess it's going back to home depot.
Wow thank you Ric!!! I appreciate you sharing this brother!! Nice pit and got a few good cooks off it so far!! Thanks for watching brother, have a great weekend!!!!
You and me both! Honestly I now know what Hell is like waiting for the LSG!! hahaha I will say I am surprised at that controller on the Traeger!! Thanks for watching Rusty!!
Thanks Jake!!! So far this pit is running pretty good!! I wish it had a few more options on it for the price but the controller is very nice! Have a great weekend and go Firebirds!!
Well when my LSG pellet gets here i will be gollowing this guideline. Makes most sense to me. But i will run it for 4 hours though on initial breakin. Great job
Well Brian I am filming tomorrow my burn off on my LSG so that video will be even a better fit!! Hoping that will be my video for next monday! I even show you the best way to get it out of the crate! hahaha
@@DeadBrokeBBQ now thats awesome n can't wait. I am still in Q but instead of being 189 i am down to 54. Excited beyond belief. Looking forward to the video
When I burned in the traeger, the manual did not mention seasoning the chamber at all, just burn off. I've been cooking about 2 years on it. Am I too late to the seasoning party? The food oils have coated the top half nicely, the bottom is a dry dusty brown. It gets vacuumed after each cook
Brian you are good to go brother! All I did with that canola oil to speed up the process to what you acquired from just the regular cooks!! Most pellet grill companies don't talk about spraying them down, I guess old habits from an old charcoal and wood cook never die brother!! hahaha I am very happy with how this controller works! The last Traeger I ran was the old Pro 22 and wow they have taken a step forward!! Thanks for watching!!
1980? 🙈. I was grilling in -30 deg F while stationed at Loring AFB in northern Maine 😂. The people from away thought I was NUTS, well I was and I admit it, but it was good eats. 👍🏻
According to Traeger certain models with the rear downdraft exhaust do not need to lid open for startup. They have a little chart/list that helps you determine if you have to. I never open the lid on my Ironwood 650 (with the downdraft exhaust) just like Traeger states. No issues.
On another note. I’ve owned three different brands of pellet grills. The best performing controller has been the Traeger. Even with no super smoke on the lower D2 models, the smoke production at 200 and below should be just as good as on my ironwood with super smoke off. Just a nice stream of steady stream of thin blue smoke.
Ya Krash the downdraft exhaust is suppose to eliminate this but my car has drivers assist and I don't trust that either!!ha ha But these fire up so quickly that a couple minutes with the lid open IMO is a better safe than sorry prevention. I am glad to hear that you haven't had any issues though!! Thanks for sharing that with us!!
I agree I am nowhere even close to being a certain "Brand" person. I have tons of examples on how I switched brands on multiple things and was typically happy that I did it! I do have to admit I lean towards the craftsmanship and build quality on my Lone Star Grillz Santa Maria, so I am excited to see what their pellet grill is like when it finally arrives here! But I will cook on any pit to see how it does! I am actually film at this very moment a rib cook on a Z Grills and that thing is doing a pretty good job so far!! Thanks for watching and leaving these great comments brother!!
Leave the lid up during start up. Once it starts burning clean and it sounds like an afterburner just got lit you can close it up. Enjoy the new pit brother!!
great tutorial thanks for it but what about the noise? can i use the 780 on about 6,5 feet from the table while socializing without people getting annoyed by it? (sorry for my bad englisch its not my native lang.)
You will hear it, not the loudest pellet grill on the market. Pretty average noise level but they all have a fan noise. We have friends over and when I cook outside, we really don't notice it but all of my friends and family are use to the fan noise. The loudest pellet grill I have ever ran is an old Green Mountain Grill. I hope this helps and maybe you can find someone in your area who owns one and go give it a listen?!?! Thanks for watching!!
@@DeadBrokeBBQthanks for taking time to answer me. overhere in the Netherlands it a very small market . there are not that many around. ill get one from my wife bcz its a safer way of grilling bcz i have young dementia. and making a good decicion is verry difficult
I will certainly look in to it!! I really like how this Traeger has performed so far!! Thanks for telling me about the sensor and I appreciate you leaving a comment!!
@@DeadBrokeBBQ that's awesome ... Ya I sell Traegers at my store and always have advice to give :) ... Glad that its been go for you ... I sure like mine
Heck ya! If you have been subscribed to me for a while you will see I am not any special brand type of guy. I just want a pellet grill to perform good and get the job done! I am honest with my viewers but I just wish this pit had a few more options on it. I am filming a comparison video now that I hope to have out next Monday. Of course in my goofball humor!! hahaha
Heck ya brother! Keep me posted! Not a lot different from Wisconsin and Canada!! hahaha I will follow you back on IG brother and thanks for following me!!
So I seasoned the grill yesterday. I removed unused pellets thru the cleanout door. Some pellets are still sitting on the auger however. That a big deal or should I remove the screws from the grate in the pellet hopper and remove them?
How do you smoke on the 780? My dad’s traeger has a smoke setting but this one doesn’t. He smokes ribs for 5-6 hours I’d like to know how to do it on the 780
Turn it on at 150 and let it roll, this pit will smoke enough. Older Traeger pits had a smoke setting because the higher temps they ran, the less smoke they made. Thanks for watching!
I got a Pro 780 last week. Is it supposed to smoke a lot right after igniting it? I started following the instruction manual for seasoning but then found this video and shut it down 5 minutes after igniting because it started smoking a ton. Before I restart, want to make sure that’s normal 😬
Ricer, Another great video. I am getting tempted into buying a pellet grill. I can only spend about $750. Have you seen or used anything in that range that you could recommend?
Yes this Traeger is $1,000 but a very solid pit so far for me. The Pit Boss 1150 is around that $750 and has a lot of good convenience options on it. Plus it is bigger than this Traeger. Another option would be the Pit Boss 850 and both of the Pro Series pits can be found at Lowe's. Camp Chef make a good pellet grill also. Hope this helps!! Thanks for watching!!
My ironwood pealed, but I'm wondering if it pealed due to paint not being treated right or because of manufacturing flaws because it looks like everyone with a ironwood and timberline has this issue with the rear exhaust.
Ya could have been painted on a Friday afternoon. Ha ha it happens sometimes. I had a pellet grill peal some right under the fire pot once and I really burnt that one in slow.
Heck ya Jeremy!! I have cooked on it 4 times so far and it did a great job!! I got a few things in mind that I want to cook on it but I think I am starting with a chicken video first!!?? But certainly a nice pit!! Thanks for watching!!
I'm late to the party here, but the drip pan has so much grease on it - do I wipe some of it off with a dry paper towel? I've read mixed things up online - some say it's not necessary, some do?
After every 3 or 4 cooks, I take it out and scrape it down. If there is a bunch of grease on it after a cook, best to clean it off some so you do not have a grease fire. Thanks for watching!
You are ready to cook away!! I always tell beginners that they should start with chicken 1/4's as their first cook because it is cheap and easy! Have fun!!
Both are good but I prefer to do it like this so I have less of a chance to have the paint to start to peel. Little lower temps for a longer period of time to help cure the paint. I have yet to have one of these powder coated pits peel. Thanks for watching and have fun with the new pit!!
Another great review Ricer! Traeger definitely has some great features on their PID controller. One of our friends has this pellet grill and he loves it. Can you email me the tracking number for Baby Huey now? 😂👍👊🍻
Hahaha getting closer Kevin! haha I still got a big list of to do's on Huey but be patient!! hahaha Have a great week brother and thanks for watching!!
No TJ I still have it and you will see it again. I just like to try other pits and see how they perform also! It gets boring just making videos on the same pit all the time. I am not a brand person, thanks for watching!!
I hit my Traeger with the high heat right away and it did peal. So please follow this to prevent the pealing.
Ya this doesn't happen all the time on powder coated pits but it does happen on every brand unfortunately. I can't say that it still won't happen but out of all the pits I have had none of them have peeled. Thanks for watching and leaving this valuable comment for others to read!!

Well I hope mine doesn't because my dumbass didn't look at what the temperature was set in and it was in Celsius and I sent her the 250...

I put up another teaser clip from last night when I first fire it up! This pit is incredible!!!
@@DeadBrokeBBQ awesome. I am now #4 in Q. Hope tomorrow or monday ill be ordering it officially.
@@briansupermag3918 Awesome dude!!
Just put the legs on haha gonna follow your instructions. Thanks for making this!
I hope you are enjoying the new pit!! Thanks for watching!
Thank you, very helpful content.
Glad I could help! Thanks for watching!!
Thanks for the video! What canola oil spray is based to use.
I use any of them or whatever I find on sale!! Thanks for watching!!
Great video thx easy to understand good for us rookies lol thx
Heck ya!! Everyone starts out as a rookie!!! Thanks for watching and enjoy that new pit!!
I appreciate the info
I’m just about to complete seasoning my grill
I’m gonna smoke a Turkey for New Years
👊🏿Salute👊🏿
Heck ya brother enjoy that new pit and that turkey is going to be epic!! Thanks for watching!
Awesome video. Thank you for putting this out there.
Thanks for watching!!!
Great tip about the paint curing👍
Thanks Bobbi and I appreciate you watching!! I hope you are having a great weekend!!
1980? 🙈. I was grilling in -30 deg F while stationed at Loring AFB in northern Maine 😂. The people from away thought I was NUTS, well I was and I admit it, but it was good eats. 👍🏻
Heck ya Mike!!! True BBQ fan right there!! Thank you for your service bro and like always I appreciate you watching!!
I just got mine and will assemble it tomorrow. Do you leave the lid up every time or just when seasoning? Thank you.
Leave the lid up during start up. Once it starts burning clean and it sounds like an afterburner just got lit you can close it up. Enjoy the new pit brother!!
Good job Ricer!
Thanks Johnny! I appreciate you watching brother! Have a great weekend!!
Awesome video ricer!! 🤙🏻 Any possibilities on doing a Yoder pallet grill??
Eventually I would love to bring a Yoder on and see how it performs!! Thanks for watching Shaun!!
Great tutorial. Thank you.
Thanks for watching!! I appreciate the comment and glad I could help!
great tutorial thanks for it
but what about the noise?
can i use the 780 on about 6,5 feet from the table while socializing without people getting annoyed by it?
Thank you!
You're welcome!!
you should get the Traeger pellet hopper level sensor its cheap and easy to install i got the same grill and it was worth it
I will certainly look in to it!!
@@DeadBrokeBBQ sweet . .. ya not much different in climate at all
Really appreciate this video
Glad I could help!!! Thanks for watching!
I have this Traeger what do you recommend to get more smoke out of it?
Very helpful thanks
Glad I could help!!! Thanks for watching!!
Well done video brother 🎯🔥✌️
Thanks ✌I appreciate you watching JJ!!! Thanks for leaving a comment and have a great BBQ weekend!!
So I seasoned the grill yesterday. I removed unused pellets thru the cleanout door. Some pellets are still sitting on the auger however. That a big deal or should I remove the screws from the grate in the pellet hopper and remove them?
Nah. You can leave them in there! Thanks for watching!
Man your the best thanks for the big help
Glad I could help and thanks for watching!
Yep that is normal. It will level off after it builds a nice fire in the firepot.
Yes sir thank you on this one 🤘☠️🔥
Heck ya! Glad I could help you out! Thanks for watching!!!
Breaking my new 780 in tomorrow!
Hope you had a lot of fun today!!! Thanks for watching!
Good info, but entertaining 👍
Thanks for watching!!
Ricer,
Another great video.
@@DeadBrokeBBQ Thanks for taking the time to reply and giving a detailed answer. As always I appreciate you help.
The oil that is on the drip pan from the factory smells horrible, do you clean any of it off before seasoning?
I just burn it off, you can clean it if you want.
Can't wait to see you do some cooks on this
Heck ya Jeremy!!
What about the intial grease on the drip pan out of the box?
I LOATHE stickers too 🤣
yes, they are such a pain in the rear!! Thanks for watching!
Are the dead broke barbecue shirts for sale?
Join my facebook group, Dead Broke BBQ Nation. Lance Buell sells the embroidered T Shirts for me. Thanks!
Sorry rookie here, once the burn off is complete am I clear to cook on it or do I have to do other steps before I cook
You are ready to cook away!! I always tell beginners that they should start with chicken 1/4's as their first cook because it is cheap and easy! Have fun!!
I’m starting with a porkbutt
Your burnoff on the Laredo was slightly different, which would you suggest?
Both are good but I prefer to do it like this so I have less of a chance to have the paint to start to peel. Little lower temps for a longer period of time to help cure the paint. I have yet to have one of these powder coated pits peel. Thanks for watching and have fun with the new pit!!
@@DeadBrokeBBQ thank you for the reply. Getting started early with the burnoff this morning then jumping in to smoking a pork butt.
Head's up, mine came set as Celsius and i didn't notice until after the first 20 min application. So instead of 250, it was 480 😢.
Wow!!! Well I think you will be ok and long as they coated it good! Enjoy that new pit!!!
Should I wipe out the extra oil in the burner or leave it?
Just leave it, it will all burn up eventually! Enjoy that new pit!!
You get rid of the pit boss?
No TJ I still have it and you will see it again. I just like to try other pits and see how they perform also! It gets boring just making videos on the same pit all the time. I am not a brand person, thanks for watching!!
Nice ricer!
Thanks Burke!!! I appreciate you watching brother!!
