- On his daily First 10 podcast, Post-Gazette sports columnist Jason Mackey ponders what's next for the Pirates in MLB free agency and the trade market after their deal with the Cleveland Guardians for 1B Spencer Horwitz this week. How GM Ben Cherington and manager Derek Shelton address their weakness in right field? Could they trade starters Mitch Keller and/or Jared Jones to bolster their offensive depth? What's next for David Bednar after losing the closer role late last season? And who will replace Luis Ortiz in the rotation?
Jason tackles those questions and more. Then previews Pitt volleyball's NCAA tournament matchup with Oregon and the Steelers' NFL Week 15 showdown with Saquon Barkley and the Philadelphia Eagles.

Even thinking of trading any of our starting pitchers should be grounds for that weasel cheringtons dismissal. It’s bad enough he’s still here he should NOT be allowed to further destroy this team.
Done with this team. Skenes was the last chance for the Pirates to make a playoff push. If it doesn't happen now, it never will. It never will.
If they get rid of Keller or Jones I'm going to check out and will have lost all faith in the organization.
theres a way to do those things in a smart, strategic, trying-to-win way.
Do i trust this group to do it in a smart, strategic, trying-to-win way? not really.
they SHOULD be open to any ripoff deal that's offered to them. That's their job. But i dont trust them.

I wouldn't have any heartburn over Keller leaving. He didn't finish the season on a high note. He should've learned by now how to be more CONSISTENT! His salary leaving would be a positive, too!
You got Oviedo, Chandler, Burrows, Ashcraft and Harrington all ready to take a spot in the rotation. What's with the outrage of trading Ortiz a no.4 or 5 starter who in a good year will make 30 starts of 5 or 6 innings for a potential everyday 1st baseman. Give this kid a fricking chance. He put up some good rookie numbers with Toronto
I always forget Oviedo I feel like everyone else does too by the sound of these reports/outrages. He’s your 5th starter/swingman if his arm isn’t up to it or one of the young kids you mentioned step it up in spring.
Horowitz had a 55 WRC+ vs lefties. He is a platoon bat.
They overpaid for questionable talent, as always. When he is on, Ortiz is much better than a No. 4. It should have been heads up, at worst. Or, the Blue Jays should have tossed in a prospect or two, not the Pirates. If Cherington plays poker, I don't know how he has a roof over his head.
@@smokey_gator_239 he reminds me of a AAAA player at best garret
@@katazack When anyone is on their better than a no.4 or 5. As I said with all the pitching talent in this organization Ortiz was expendable. Horowitz hit .265 13 hr;s 40 rbi's in his rookie year. And had a strikeout rate under 20% something not to many Pirates can say. If he does become a platoon player and hits .270 with 15+ hr's 70+ rbi's I;ll definately take that
I'm surprised and confused why you would not like the Ortiz/Horowitz trade. Pirates desperately need bats and they aren't coming from their farm system or free agency. They have some depth in SP. They HAD to trade from it. Better Ortiz than Jones or even innings-eater Keller. Horowitz is at minimum a competent hitter, maybe becomes a little more than that. Pirates have a desperate need for competent hitters.
How can you like a guy who has been in the minors a long time. You can’t say that vlad blocked him . If he was so great he would have been up already any team who wins will get a guy into there lineup that’s good. AAAA guy
@@joshuarosenberg1782 Because when he did get called up, he posted a 125 OPS+ in 97 games, a pretty big sample size. Just for some perspective, you know what Kyle Schwarber's career OPS+ is? 123. And Horwitz's 125 would have led the Pirates last year.
One thing that isnt entirely clear from your colleagues' reporting is whether Jones and Keller are still "available."
Also, im sure everyone is "available" in the sense that theyll take a ripoff for anyone.
Theres a price that id accept for either, but man, dealing Keller just a year after his extension was signed just sounds like a bad juju move. feels like bad form.
you have no idea how frustrating it is to be 34 years old and have no idea what "writ large" means
horowitz needs to watch some video of telez stinking up the joint and getting booed mercillisly , he needs to bring his "A" game straight away and not halfway thru the season like telez did ! triolo is a future gold glover at 3rd take anything you can get for hayes and thank the other team for taking on his overbloated salary ! falter is waaaaay too inconsistant trade him too !
I’ve been saying that same point about 3rd all year
Oviedo dogg..?????
