  • What are the differences between Rabbet planes, Shoulder planes, and Moving Fillister Planes? What are their uses and what are their ket elements.

    00:00:00 James Wright: What are we going to do today?
    15:00 Tom West: How often do you use that carriage makers rabbet plane...I saw one on amazon for 60 bucks and was thinking about getting it? Do you think it's worth it?
    32:00 Bryan Fulmer: Do those bevel up shoulder planes take different size cuts/thickness??
    34:00 Nick Sallis: If you can only have one, would you get the LN rabbet block plane over the regular one? Does it still work for normal cuts?
    36:00 leuanye: Why do most skew irons face left?
    37:00 Jose Mejia Perez: When is he going to use his pole lathe?
    40:00 Tom West: Is a 79 worth buying? I've seen a bunch for sale but they aren't cheap.
    41:00 Dan Sackett: Do you use a shoulder plane often? I saw Shannon Roger's video recently with his opinion on them and he hardly uses them.
    42:00 Brigette Anderson-Atkins: What would be a good size chisel to make a poor man's rabbet?
    45:00 theolithic71: I have a Stanley 78 and the fence isn't square to the sole. how would you recommend I fix this?
    47:00 kjayisme: Is the cross-grain rebate itself (as in the cut, not the plane) called a fillister? And what is a carcass?
    50:00 Alex Afanasyev: Any tips setting up the blade on Stanley 78. Does it have to be flush with the side or a bit out?
    51:00 Bryan Fulmer: can you mount the Stanley 386 to any of these planes?
    52:00 Alan Smith: Will James have another wood plane build project coming up?
    53:00 Jose Mejia: Is it possible to make rabbets with just a chisel?
    57:00 Tom West: How old is that beautiful infill you have there?
    01:00:00 @Mr Q: so would the side rabbet plane work on cleaning up the side if you get that step down issue? like an inconsistent fence

    I know this is an old video, but thanks for this; I got a rabbet plane (Craftsman 78 copy) from a friend who passed shortly after giving it to me. I will probably never use it, but I'm going to put it in working order again.

    If you want to be more confused, hand plane in french is called "rabot" (we don't pronounce the t, by the way). EDIT: Apparently, they don't share the same etymology. "rabot" seems to come from Dutch "robbe" which means rabbit, while rebate/rabbet comes from "rabat" (apparently sometimes spelled "rabbat" in Old French). If that's not the most confusing etymology...

    Edit:
    Nevermind, I posted this comment before I heard the very last question, and of course, that very last question was basically the same as mine. 🤦‍♂️😂
    So if you find that you are "stepping" your shoulder, what's the best way to correct it?
    Can you just turn the plane 90° to plane down the steps (planing the adjoining face/edge)?

    My daughter loves puzzles, but I think a WW one would be a bit out of her comfort zone, she is more about peppa pig, buses and fairies. However, what she is missing is a board to do her puzzles on (doing them on our carpet bends the pieces and as she gets older it'd be nice for her to have a board that she can take in and out with half finished puzzles. I have ordered some white oak, ~2mm thickness, and I was going to fashion something out of that. Anyway, I thought that if you were struggling for idea (as if!!!) then you could neatly advertise your new puzzles with a well designed puzzle board.... then I can steal your idea to make mine! I was thinking something around 80cm/32in x 50cm/20in in a nice hardwood, perhaps with a mitre cornered border round it, something like that. If my 2mm board is too flexible, I might add foam to the bottom. Any ideas greatly appreciated!

    Hey James, I’m not really in a place where I can get vintage planes easily. I’d like to just buy a new rabbet plane. If you were to get a NEW 78 (sold at rockler, but not made in America or UK anymore) or spend three times as much for a veritas skew rabbet, which would you recommend? Anything wrong with NEW Stanley joinery planes?

    • @WoodByWrightHowTo
      @WoodByWrightHowTo  11 месяцев назад +1

      The new Stanley 78 is a great little tool. It doesn't have the fit and finish and it's a little bit fiddly to set up but it will do the work perfectly fine. Where are you at? Have you taken a look at www.handtoolfinder.com

      @@WoodByWrightHowTo I’m in Beaumont, Texas, which is about an hour northeast of Houston.
      I’ll check out the website! I see on their map that there are a few Texas locations, but they’re probably 3 or 4 hours away from me at closest.
      My main need is for cross-grain rabbets. Right now I crosscut with a carcass saw and then chisel up to my line to clean up, but I want a faster method.
      This is all for my method of dovetails for boxes. I use a 1/8 inch rabbet on my tails board and it naturally hides my 1/8 inch deep box bottom grooves.
      The fence, depth stop, and nicker are all important to me because it’s for a repeated cut across the grain.
      Thanks for the response! Love your content

      @@thomasarussellsr The 9 is called a cabinetmakers block plane......I know it as a shooting plane. Its a square "block" shaped plane with a round knob hanging out the back. Some modern plane makers have added a "hotdog" handle to their low angle planes.......the No9 had this type of handle for the sides and is probably the inspiration for the current "hotdog" handles :)

    Where does a Stanley 45 or 55 fit in here?

    • @WoodByWrightHowTo
      @WoodByWrightHowTo  3 года назад +2

      Those are combination plans. They can do rabbits but they're not very good at it. They generally fall into the plow plane and molding plane category.

    • @criswilson1140
      @criswilson1140 3 года назад +1

      In my experience if the wood is 3/4 inch or thicker, the 45/55 can rabbit it. If it is thinner than 3/4 inch then the fence doesn't catch well and the plane starts to lean over, so you really have to pay attention. End grain rabbits they chatter terribly, but will push through if the nicker and ironare sharp. The 45/55 jack of all planes, master of none rule applies.
