A friend introduced me to small change in 1979. This album has been in every turntable, 8 track, cassette, CD, IPOD and memory stick I've owned since. None of my friends get it...I need new friends.
The most beautifully heartbreaking song I've ever heard, and one that still sends shivers down my spine 20 years after hearing it for the first time. Sublime perfection ... and that voice !!
Takes me back to when I first got into Tom, when I saw him on the OGWT and bought the Small Change album in 1977. Still love him to this day; a true great.
My friends know it’s time to leave when I put Tom on, an acquired taste they say. For me, all those years ago, it was an instant connection. He sticks a pin in it, his albums are a butterfly collection of my emotions…..phenomenal. That said, his discordant works are speaking to someone else.
Every time I listen to this song, I get a lump in my throat and feel like crying. This is so strange, for I have a great love life with my beloved for 35 years now. So that is what great music does for you I suppose........
One girl send me this wonderful song six monts ago. And i accepted her invitation to the blues :) She's dined of my heart and now i love her so much... It's almost crazy but my love was born from this song! Incredible feeling...
@STUMP: I know this is an ancient post, but I get it. Boy, do I get it. Just listened to this song for old times sake and his genius all came back to me. The first time I heard "Pasties and a G String," I was hooked for life.
Heard this for the first time at the beginning of the movie "Bad Timing", looked it up and can't stop listening to it. If there was ever a perfect song for a movie this is it.
I heard this song for the first time when it plays over the opening scene of the film Bad Timing. It perfectly fits with the tone of the story of the destructive relationship between the two main characters.
All Tom's albums from 'Nighthawks' to 'Blue Valentine' are just so gorgeous, but this track might be my favourite. So close to syrup and yet just so good! One of the best drinking songs of all time?
I love your choice of photos for this great song - the perfect metaphor of hope represented by the rising sun, yet the uncertainty of the distant fog. Thanks for posting.
I saw "The Machinist" for the first time the other day and this song kept playing in my head when he went to the airport diner. Before the plot twist, that is. Good movie. Sorta Fight Club meets Blue Velvet.
Eddie Mueller- did my homework- Fallen Angel’s Stella DOES come to mind with a hint of Lana Turner in “The Postman Always Rings Twice”... love Noir Alley - thanks for the song suggestion
I wish when I was a lonely 15yr old, sitting on the floor of a small town bus station, writing vignettes about the traveller's lives, destinations and did any want to run away from home, like me andTom SUPERLATIVE POET, DIGGER OF THE HUMAN CONDITION would have fallen in love with me- for a while at least...
Well she's up against the register with an apron and a spatula, Yesterday's deliveries and tickets for the bachelors She's a moving violation from her conk down to her shoes Well, it's just an invitation to the blues And you feel just like Cagney, she looks like Rita Hayworth At the counter of the Schwab's drugstore You wonder if she might be single, she's a loner and likes to mingle Got to be patient, try and pick up a clue She said "How you gonna like 'em, over medium or scrambled"? You say 'anyway's the only way', be careful not to gamble On a guy with a suitcase and a ticket getting out of here In a tired bus station and an old pair of shoes This ain't nothing but an invitation to the blues But you can't take your eyes off her, get another cup of java It's just the way she pours it for you, joking with the customers Mercy mercy, Mr. Percy, there ain't nothing back in Jersey But a broken-down jalopy of a man I left behind And the dream that I was chasing, and a battle with booze And an open invitation to the blues But she used to have a sugar daddy and a candy-apple Caddy And a bank account and everything, accustomed to the finer things He probably left her for a socialite, and he didn't love her 'cept at night And then he's drunk and never even told her that he cared So they took the registration, and the car-keys and her shoes And left her with an invitation to the blues Cause there's a Continental Trailways leaving local bus tonight, good evening You can have my seat, I'm sticking round here for a while Get me a room at the Squire, the filling station's hiring And I can eat here every night, what the hell have I got to lose? Got a crazy sensation, go or stay? now I gotta choose And I'll accept your invitation to the blues
song about breakfast...and this is not for everybody (some choose brunch).. im going to 24h mini market, drink my 4% alcohol beer and turn the blues.. tom waits, youre my bourbon after whiskey and well done steak.. muah!
Love this man and his songs, got èm all. But i have the same problem that some of you guys, my friends do not like his music, only one or two people im friends with like this, and the it,s always the most rock,n roll, blues rock tunes thet want to hear, like-Down down down, chocholate jesus, bad as me, etc etc, no one is with me on the more stranger tunes, like "The Black Rider album, Frank,s wild years album, Rain Dogs and so on.We like`n love his music, cheers, to all who like Tom Waits. RRR
I am buying a sweet thing (who knows not of my ache for her) a T-shirt with the words: "I work at the counter of the Shwab's drugstore" or perhaps "I'm a moving violation"
If you are looking for the greatest songs ever made, this one is a very serious consideration. Thanks Mr. Waits
But in fact there’s roughly a dozen or more Waits songs you might have to consider then, too. So hard to tell which one is the best.
This was his peak and One of the MOST intense tunes ever written. I do agreee
@@Tredecimus "Time" is right up there, 'Kentucky Avenue' as well...
A friend introduced me to small change in 1979. This album has been in every turntable, 8 track, cassette, CD, IPOD and memory stick I've owned since. None of my friends get it...I need new friends.
I’m down to hang out with strangers that listen to Tom Waits. Let’s share a memory and let Tom be the soundtrack ✌🏼
One of my favorite albums
I'm down with Tom fans.
I get it, I’ll be your friend!
@@rolphy4338 And the guy can act, play cornet, piano, guitar. He's a national treasure.
Yes, there were times when people made real music with real lyrics...
Oh how I miss those days...
How does a man who sounds like he smokes tires and drinks gasoline make such beautiful music and lyrics?
Because he has known the pain of smoking tires and drinking gasoline.
Same for Shane McGowan
because his voice echoes pain and hardship
I still remember that day I first listened to this song and that sensation is still alive in me. It felt like a real invitation to blues
The most beautifully heartbreaking song I've ever heard, and one that still sends shivers down my spine 20 years after hearing it for the first time. Sublime perfection ... and that voice !!

I admire your good taste. Tom has the soul of a poet
My friends know it’s time to leave when I put Tom on, an acquired taste they say. For me, all those years ago, it was an instant connection. He sticks a pin in it, his albums are a butterfly collection of my emotions…..phenomenal. That said, his discordant works are speaking to someone else.
I'm with you bro... My friends know that I don't give a fuck about modern mainstream music but only a few can understand and appreciate Tom.
The lyrics are printed in the CD insert and read: He probably left her for a socialite. He didn't love her 'cept at night.
I'm trying to quit smoking..
This song doesn't help..
I hope you Rest in Peace now, dear smoking fellow. 🙏🏻
Tom Waits is the poster boy for smoking.
Did you manageeventually?
I'm trying to quit drinking..
This song doesn't help..
Doesn't help. But song is awsome. Crying
Every time I listen to this song, I get a lump in my throat and feel like crying. This is so strange, for I have a great love life with my beloved for 35 years now. So that is what great music does for you I suppose........
I`m crying, and i love it.

I still get chills when he sings the final line..
Tom Waits ... My idol and this song revealed my dark side . The only singer who can touch your heart ...
@STUMP: I know this is an ancient post, but I get it. Boy, do I get it. Just listened to this song for old times sake and his genius all came back to me. The first time I heard "Pasties and a G String," I was hooked for life.
This might be his most perfect song....
i totally love him..his voice,his music,his lyrics..
I love him too
blues is; where the heart is... thanks tom..
My favourite Waits song. Doesn't need a video - it all drifts in front of my eyes
Heard this for the first time at the beginning of the movie "Bad Timing", looked it up and can't stop listening to it. If there was ever a perfect song for a movie this is it.
I was brought here from watching a random interview. Didn’t even know he was. I thank RUclips algorithm on this one. 😊
I heard this song for the first time when it plays over the opening scene of the film Bad Timing. It perfectly fits with the tone of the story of the destructive relationship between the two main characters.
Yep! Gives me shivers. The lyrics, the performance! One of the very greatest blues songs ever written.
All Tom's albums from 'Nighthawks' to 'Blue Valentine' are just so gorgeous, but this track might be my favourite. So close to syrup and yet just so good! One of the best drinking songs of all time?
Such a lyrical masterpiece. Completely spellbinding.
"a jalopy of a man"......T.W. knows how to speak the blues
My long time favourite the song and singer. The mould was broken when Tom was made.
Thank you tom! this song make my eyes and soul get lost in time and space.
Nothing better than this song.
I just need to hear it once a month and I'll be fine.
My two favorite singers are Tom Waits and Damien Rice! No one else comes close.
Don't forget Leonard Cohen
Possibly my favourite ❤
The word "genius" is used far too often but not often enough in the case of Tom Waits!
Tom Waits inspired me to be a movie director so I can put every single song of his to my movies
what a great song and a great sax. thank U Mr.Waits
This could very well be a novel.
greatest story teller...geez ❤️
so sad but beautiful
No one can sing like Tom Waits..
Truly great song, perfectly sung.
Thank you Dimitra... you are a kind of woman, if you listen to Tom or Joe or..... Thank you!

05/02/20 - Eddie Mueller of TCM's Film Noir feature tonight of 1945's Fallen Angel brought me here. This is the 'homework' assignment.
And he was right!! I’m so grateful for the introduction to this amazing song. It’s left me in a trance...
Makes me wanna grab the guys, a mic & a glass of johnnie and sing this at the bar the beach during summertime. Woah
Way to kill a mood
One of the best Songs ever . State of grave

Yes, Eddie , I did my homework too. Thank you for this song and thank you for Noir Alley. All great!!!
No, he does say socialite - look it up if you don't know what it means. And then, "and he didn't love her 'cept at night" Now shhhh, Tom is singing.
Such an awesome song.
And thank you SO MUCH for making an ON TIME lyric video.

Fallen Angel.Linda Darnel 1945. Yeah Eddie. Did my homework.
Tom Spanne same here, ever notice how many songs are just an old movie plot? Or in some cases they just blatantly steal the title!
Homework is done, Eddie nailed it!

I need another drink. Jacks dead, who's next
Could be the film "Fallen Angel."
The only thing better than this song is its live performance 1981-07-03 - Shadow Of Intolerance, Montreal Expo Theatre Jazz Festival
Nice drinking song, I like it, but will also recommend Jimmy Dawkins Hard life blues song.
It's definitely socialite.
There's no sense of making any music after this. Everyting is said in this piece of music...
The only impression that I do is a spot on Waits.
For the friends I met in Iceland Mr. Halit
Ziggy and his sister. still remember
❤❤❤
I’m in it deep
smoke camel or marlboro and read charles bukowski... be careful you can be addicted
I always heard that one line as: "She's alone a lot, so mingle..."
At at 3:05 it says "He didn't love her 'cept at night..."
