Richard Hugh "Richie" McCaw (born 31 December 1980 in Oamaru, North Otago) is a New Zealand rugby union player, and is the current test captain. He plays in the openside flanker position for the New Zealand, Crusaders and Canterbury rugby teams. McCaw is considered one of the best players in his position, with his ability to anticipate play and adapt to the referee's rulings some of his key attributes. He was raised in rural North Otago, before moving to Dunedin in 1994 to board at Otago Boys' High School. In 1999 he moved to Christchurch to study at Lincoln University and was selected in the national under-19 rugby union team. The following year he played for the Under 21s and Canterbury in the National Provincial Championship, before debuting in 2001 for the Crusaders in the Super 14.
McCaw was selected for the 2001 New Zealand National Rugby Team's end-of-year tour, despite having played only a total of eight minutes of Super 14 rugby. His debut for the All Blacks was against Ireland, where he put in a man-of-the-match performance and was selected as New Zealand's first choice open-side flanker for the 2003 World Cup. McCaw became a regular selection in the New Zealand national rugby team, only missing a few games due to reoccurring concussions. In 2006 he was named captain of the All Blacks. He led the All Blacks at the 2007 World Cup and his captaincy came under criticism after they were knocked out in the quarter-final. He continued to captain the All Blacks after the world cup and will lead the team into the 2011 Rugby World Cup.
During McCaw's rugby career Canterbury won the NPC (later ITM Cup) five times and the Crusaders reached the Super Rugby semi-finals nine times, going on to win the final on four of these occasions. Since his debut the All Blacks have won seven Tri Nations titles, completed three successful Grand Slam tours and won the Bledisloe Cup eight times. In 2010 McCaw played his 100th Super Rugby game, made a record-equalling 94th test appearance for his country and became New Zealands most capped All Black captain, leading the side in 57 test matches. He has been named the International Rugby Board (IRB) International Player of The Year a record three times. In 2010 his contract was NZ$750,000 per year, making him the equal highest paid player in New Zealand. In the 2011 World Cup Pool game against France McCaw became the first All Black to reach 100 caps.
15 years ,from start to finish, never a bad game against the best teams in the hardest competitions in the world ,winning more trophies and medals than any other player, surely he has to be the best to have played the game, When I read about others that could be considered to be just as good they have had neither the number of games or the hard games in comparison. Will these players be around in 15 years and against which teams will their skills be compared to? Referees from many countries refereed the games he played in and he was rarely penalized, surely they can't have all got it wrong. We have all be privileged to have seen this humble ,dedicated ,athlete for the last 15 yrs.
Like him or not this guy will most probably be one of the best Rugby players the world has ever seen, as a teenager I thought Micheal Jones and still do was pretty special but MCcaw ticks all the boxes you would judge players on the time they've spent in the game and how consistent at the level they've played..I think the powers that be are wrapping him up now to lengthen his career anyone else in the all blacks apart from Reid can be replaced

Grateful to be alive to witness probably the best rugby player of all time to grace this sport..his leadership and commitment to the team is beyond belief. ..and thats why his teammates would go to hell and back for this guy..love him or hate him..he is a champion.

Its a real shame that instead of simply acknowledging one of the world's greatest players, people feel they have to put McCaw down and extol the merits of other players. Whether you believe he was the greatest player ever or not he is still worthy of respect because of his accomplishments. The stats don't lie and no player will ever equal his success in international tests . If you are a real rugby union lover you have to acknowledge that.

I don't think anyone doubts that Richie is the best openside in history, unless they are muppets or Soccer supporters, but to call him the greatest player ever will inevitably raise the hackles of huge numbers, and rightly so IMO..
The epitome of great sportsmanship, dedication and courage. A quiet, humble and understated man, McCaw loved every aspect of rugby. His commitment and taciturn demeanour, even in the heat of battle, are exemplary. He is as talented as Ronaldino, without all the Prima Donna antics and dirty play. A true sporting legend, worthy of many accolades.

da BATMAN to be honest big flankers are useless. To slow off the mark etc. I was a small number 7 and was a complete pain in the arse- all over the place tackling everyone with my hands on the ball first at every break down. So much fun!!!

My best rugby player of all time he constantly worked on his game throughout his entire career and honed his skillset with the ever evolving game. He was a menace at the breakdown, his defence was flawless and put his body on the line every game. He bled buckets.and was stitched up regularly, he even played with a broken foot in RWC final. A true captain ..a humble man . easily my greatest player of all time.... followed closely in second place by Christian Cullen........... thanks for the memories !

Richie will go down as the greatest rugby player of all time,If anyone can argue a greater player than Richie, then i would like to hear it. In the past it was regarded that Colin Meads was the greatest player to play rugby at an international level, but even the great Man has conceded that Richie MCcaw is the best of all time.

Greatest openside definitely, best forward possibly but doubtful, but greatest player???? Not a chance!!!! ..... Mike Gibson, Gareth Edwards, Barry John, Phil Bennett, Brian O'Driscoll, Joost van der Westhuizen, David Duckham, Dan Carter, Johnny Wilkinson, Danie Gerber, Andy Irvine, Gerald Davies, Tim Horan, Phillipe Sella, and the list goes on of better all round players.. Kiwis seem to think they have a god given right to have the greatest players in every position, but being the greatest team, which they invariably are, does not always mean the greatest players.. When greatest teams of all time are selected, generally the only AB's guaranteed places are Jonah, Richie and Christian Cullen.. Carter is always debated with at least 3 others, and I would have Carl Hayman as the best Tight head, but that's always argued.. Other than that it's the value AB's bring to a team that's important.. Everyone is biased to some extent, but to say Richie is the greatest player ever is just stupidity and shows either a lack of knowledge or respect for others achievements..

I've watched the All Blacks since 1984 since I was 14. Twenty two years later I had the opportunity to move to Australia and then New Zealand. I learned an incredible amount about the culture, people and love of sport in both countries. I am a better person because of those great countries and their culture! I am a heart felt lover of Rugby Union and while this video is great I cannot convey the many great rugby players over the years impact on the sport and their everlasting love of the game!

McCaw is the greatest rugby player, All Black or otherwise, to have ever played the game. Anyone who calls him a cheat is ignorant. They simply cannot handle the fact that he is the best there has ever been. Playing in the most physically demanding position of any sport on the planet, he has dominated like no other. And continues to do so. Legend. End of story.

He is a brilliant player, a good flanker knows how to thread the rules and push them as far as he can, refs are starting to watch him now though, but you cant dispute he is probably the greatest player of a generation. Michael Hooper is only young though, I expect he may achieve the same status....

Richie is the best Flanker of all time, but Sam Kane is up and coming that's for sure, what Richie does well is plays to the whistle, he tests the ref like any good player should, puts his body on the line and never gives in.
