Martha perfectly captures the mind-bending, hallucinatory turbulence within this astounding work. Everybody else seems to be playing notes in quick succession, which is merely the first requirement.
She's about the only pianist I can think of who has the fingers and the temperament to play Schuman's crazy tempo markings ("faster", "even faster", and "still faster") in tempo...and she practically paints the slow movement, so beautifully is it played; from both a technical and musical perspective, this performance is unprecedented...
there os not something technical and musical point of view...Thechnic is part of music, unseparable, what is technic? Only that time during the practice work, but finaly, there is no technical aspect...
Dear user ArgerichHD, "Andantino. Getragen ("worn"--there could not be a more appropriate marking for this movement)". Indeed "Getragen" means worn in German, but in musical terms it should be translated as "Solemn". Martha Argerich is a Goddess. Incredible version.
I hadn't really heard much of Martha Argerich's playing but was always entranced by her sultry beauty. But I happened upon this video and...holy cow! Holy moly! Gadzooks! Gosh! Blimey! Geez Louise! Gads! Oh, man! Oh! What a recording! The first movement alone was a stunning tour-de-force and/or Tour de France of flyin' fingers on fire! Seriously, absolutely incredible pianism. But then even more surprising and "jaw dropping" in its way is the hushed beauty of the second movement. Absolutely exquisitely played! I always knew that Martha Argerich had "technique to burn," but I now see (hear) that she can play with the greatest beauty and depth of feeling. Extraordinary! Why hasn't she recorded many solo piano albums? Another recording of hers that I came across a year ago or so was her recording of the Brahms B-minor Rhapsody Op. 79 no. 1. It is also extremely beautiful and the way she ends it especially so: ruclips.net/video/VchnVmlYI04/видео.html
Sorry to be late in responding! I didn't get any "notifications" from RUclips or at least I didn't notice any. To answer your question, no, I haven't heard her in Rach 3. Maybe I should give her recording a listen. I actually grew up hearing Rach 2 and Rach 4 more than Rach 3. I don't know why Rach 4 doesn't seem to be played very often--I love it! (Even if the slow movement seems to echo "Three Blind Mice"!) In Rachmaninoff, I'm generally a big fan of Horowitz's recordings. But then again, if forced to make a choice, I choose "hot-blooded" passion over "icy" precision. Speaking of Rachmaninoff, Edgar Self (the wonderful gentleman who used to work in the classical recordings part of Tower Records in Chicago) gave me Rustem Hayroudinoff's CD of the Rachmaninoff Preludes, saying he thought it was the best recording he'd ever heard of the Preludes. I haven't heard that many recordings of the "Rachy" Preludes, but I agree that Rustem Hayroudinoff's recording is fabulous! Thanks for bringing up Martha Argerich's recording of the Rach 3 Concerto--I'll give it a listen! And, just for grins, here's Cyprien Katsaris playing (wonderfully!) an etude by Bortkiewicz that you might like: ruclips.net/video/gkjb6INBbL8/видео.html
Listening to this knockout performance of a notoriously crazy knockout piece, while I meditate on the picture of the lady pianist who did this - definitely a beautiful sombre knockout in her prime - just knocks me out and my socks off.
Que veux tu dire espèce de pied nickelé verdâtre .... Mine is slightly better ( but not too much ... i work still hard for pulverize my own record ... Working pulverizing Fredo's pif - lol )
Clara was noted for her technical dexterity and this is one of the reasons for the markings. He dedicated it to a past friends, Henrietta Voigt, and Clara loved it; "I love it as I love you."
Thanks for uploading this masterpiece and out-of-this-world performance. Just to point out German "Getragen" only ever means "worn" in the context of clothes. It does not have the same figurative connotation. In music (or generally mood/atmosphere) it translates to solemn, carried, measured. Which is oddly indecisive here. It's like "Andantino ma non troppo".
Excellent recording. Usually I would bash Argerich for having absolutely no respect for the time signatures especially in the first movement but... Schumann did mention "as fast as possible" so... brava Argerich!
In my opinion,as beautiful as some of Robert Schumann's works are, they all seem to have passages of mental instability within them. To me,this work represents Schumann's uncontrollable racing thoughts.
The slow mvt is the equal of anything else ever composed. With just a handful of opening notes “Clara Schumann’s husband” brings us into a whole world.
The performance is about perfect, as i can imagine, however, it's Schumann, who i do not understand. Why is that first movement "so rasch, wie möglich" ? I feel like it should be just an Allegro appassionato...
Merci Pat de m'avoir envoyé une copie depuis B-A ( Argentine du Nord )... Manque de bol c'était pas la bonne tonalité ( brune pouff ! ) Besos qd même ( the Leman kleine green fischer ... named Lionel ... Humpf )
I got this sheet music at a thrift shop for a dollar and brought it home and played it through, and I didn't like it. My mom who had been listening in the other room said it had a lot of feeling, which was news to me. To me it just made me nervous so loud and rushed, the only thing it made me feel was irritated. so I thought I'd come on here and listen to somebody famous play it. I still feel annoyed by the majority of the piece, but that second movement, it is just the most wonderful thing under Martha's fingertips.
1st, 3rd and 4th movements: Too fast, and even for this "Sturm und Drang" work too driven. The second movement is out of this world and offers a welcome respite. To be fair, I love how Martha Argerich plays Schumann in her later years. This recording was made at the same time as her monumental version of Liszt's b-minor sonata.
Sometimes I forget just how tremendous Martha Argerich truly is, then I find a video like this and I’m blown away all over again.
She is one of a kind
She brings an enlightened sense of voicing to this piece.Schumann would be delighted!!
"as quickly as possible" - "faster" - "faster still" - ideal for Argerich!
Take a look at the last movement of Mahler 9, the same stuff only in reverse, immer langsammer, noch langsammer, immer noch langsammer, etc.
And what's the point? For me personally, Argerich fails to answer that question often.
@@shawnmand5607 quite so

"As quickly as possible
-Okay
-Faster.
-Wait. What?
-Faster!
-But...
-FASTER!"
Martha: "Hold my beer."
Her playing on the Andantino is exquisite, full of pathos, yearning and roundness of tone. A lyrical tour de force.

Oh boy. She definitely earned her reputation with this recording.
Martha Argerich's portrait and piano-performance are very unique and awesome. Enjoying her piano concertos make me feel pleasurable.
My jaw dropped at the coda of the 1st Mvt. How could she play faster than she was already? And it was perfectly clear--every note!
- Schumann, how fast should I play this piece?
- Yes.
As fast as you can. Ask Martha!!🙂
As quickly as you can, without sacrificing articulation and phrasing - in short, while under control. Hoomeyow!!
No, twice as fast as you can
Thank you, Lia, for this delicious morsel of wit (so apt) - you made my afternoon!

genius pianist, incredible performance
This is by far the best recording of this piece. Just blown away - mezemrizing!
this conveys roberts flights of madness ,ecstasy ,longing for clara perfectly
This sonata shows that Schumann was a great composer.
THE best performance of this piece. Hard to find a copy for a reasonable price. It's coupled with the Liszt B Minor Sonata, also a great performance.

Not Fredo, Gilbert sorry, the blindy and funny semi blues man semi crooner woman ( re lol )
Richter has her beat by a mile. Some of her passages are too rushed. Richter is sublime.
And Arrau is still better. The best.
@@anns.724 well said 👏
How fantastic is that. That’s as good as piano playing gets.
Very nice sound!...This sonata was surely a heavy metal music for audience in XIX century...
lol
no
"heavy metal" is a sad, sad XXI-century disease. Schuman only composed music.
for sure hahaha, it definitely sets itself apart from other pieces at that time
There's no better than Martha on this one.
I can't wait for Wim Winters' tempo reconstruction of this!

I'm sorry but there are not any
women anywhere in the same
league as this today
Phenomenal technique!!
Why are you limiting your comment to women? Why not say “pianists” as that is the truth.
鋼のようなテクニック。まさに超絶技巧
This is a very turbulent piece, capturing Schumann's extreme emotional range: It is supposed to make us nervous and anxious.
..Then you listen to Mozart in G minor...
No not at all.
Essa sonata é um espelho da minha alma...... apaixonada, louca e melancolica......
Inigualable, Martha: Carácter, contraste y fuego sinperder jamás la línea melódica.
Wow phenomenal! Wonderful!
I wish I could see her in Seoul.
打鍵が明瞭かつ強靱で、若きArgerichの才気ほとばしる演奏。70歳過ぎのバッハのBWV826 Capriccio の軽妙な演奏と比較すると興味深い。
너무 좋다. My heart is fluttering.
Merci Matha ! J'avais besoin de Fuego !
This should be compared with Richter's version in Milan 1962.
Musica stupenda e pianista straordinaria|
Beautiful performance.
"Getragen" does NOT mean "worn" (like in "worn out"), but "solemn", resp. "stately" [pace]
I think it's the equivalent for "sostenuto", but my german is better than my italien ;)
Zeratok Elfmann
"sostenuto" is correct
Rizzo Chuenringe I would say carried is a good soloution

@@jjg7 The 2nd movement is extraordinary. When she reins it in, her playing is wonderful.

Mis-Translated ... German "getragen" does not mean "worn" in this context. It is more like "drawling" and does not mean depressed or so
