Jeff, Love the channel and love your coverage of all things boating! I'm an impoundment cruiser, and an avid angler, and use (also teach) a variety of sonar types (from simple depth sounders to phased array "live" sonar). Specifically for cruising, I find that the detail provided by scanning sonar is particularly valuable when anchoring. Most impoundments have areas where trees were removed but stumps were left in place; scanning sonar is particularly good at identifying these areas so we can avoid sacrificing an anchor to a stump field. The traditional 2D "fishfinder" sonar is complementary to this, as it helps to reveal the hardness of the bottom (typically harder bottoms are more brightly colored). The phased array equipment is not as well-suited for cruisers (and is relatively quite expensive)--but for anglers, it is a definite advantage as you can see fish movements in real time and learn how they react to your bait presentation(s). My compliments to you and the PYS team for bringing excellent value to RUclips! Cheers!

Captain John McCalpin, thanks for adding your perspective to the sounder discussion, well said.

I have side scan and it is the best thing ever. I have a power boat but I sail with my friends and if I had a sailboat I would definitely get side scan as well as regular sonar cone. It makes sure you don’t hook onto a rock and not lose your anchor if you swing around all night. Forward scan would be awesome but I don’t need it.

Thanks for sharing Franklin, glad you too appreciate the benefit of side scan.

Not expecting this video from you. Glad to see you finally talking about some bass fishing gear. I know its not your specialty being a yacht owner. Thanks Jeff!

Right on, reasonable expectations. I have a less than $100 fishing sonar/ gps on my sailboat it works at a fraction of the price of multiple units.

Thanks for sharing Braith. Being on the water is what's the most important.

Thanks Jeff, been waiting for someone to do this topic on RUclips for years. Would love it if you could dig in deeper on the practical use of side scan sonar on your sailboat or for sailors. I’ve just upgraded to an MFD is sonar built in and wasn’t planning on installing the sender, but after hearing more from you hear I’m wondering how I’d use it in practice. I sail the Great Lakes on a 37’ sloop and love tucking myself into places most don’t venture and knowing what the bottom is made of would make that so much easier.

Hi Yves, for technical gunkholing, a side sonar is just awesome, not only to you see under your boat, but also side to side, especially in anchoring waters.

Great topic and a hard one to get information on from retailers. Do you have your two set to same same chart plotter and how do you have a low water alarm set. Thanks

When setting depth alarms on my boat, i use the depth transducer connected to my instruments. It's a low power draw and the chartplotter doesn't need to be energized to provide depth and alarming feature.

    Salutations 🍎
Forward scope🔍🤔 Certainly provides a ‘Foreword’ premise, reminds me of a probable case scenario of a road vehicle, satellite 🛰, or & repeater linked to let the occupants know of a pending bio, or infrastructural hazard, just around the corner ⚠️
Back to life aquatic, just waxing lyrically, how about a scanning system for freighters alike, that doesn’t interfere with bio~sourced sonar 🔍🤔

Great video but your mic is terrible sounds like your mic is 10 ft away instead of using the one in front of you
