    0:54 Valve actually did far more than double Linux users on Steam because before the Steam Deck, a lot of people already used Proton, which is the reason the Steam Deck can run so much games now.
    So if we actually compare from the period just before the release of the first version of Proton on Github, Linux users on Steam were not even in the tenth of a percent, which means Valve literally multiplied by 20+ the number of Linux users.
    It's not an overstatement when we say they revolutionized gaming on Linux.

    • @Butcher-m7y
      @Butcher-m7y 2 месяца назад +6

      pre steam deck proton was just an early repurposed version of wine, valve were still testing the waters with whether or not it's actually worth investing dev time and hours into, the success of the steam deck is what made them go balls deep into it, which is great!

    • @2greenify

      @@Butcher-m7y The other way around.
      The success of Proton is what made them have enough confidence to develop the Deck.
      Sure, Proton has improved quite a bit since its release, as well, but the big breakthroughs were _necessary_ for launch day already.

    • @Butcher-m7y
      @Butcher-m7y 2 месяца назад

      @@hundvd_7 not really, they've already released steam machines in the past like the 960M ones and they were a failure even tho u could just install windows on them back then, as u can with the deck, the reason the deck was a success is because of its handheld / portable aspect, as far as translation layers go valve were experimenting with their own version called ToGL, and in the process released 2 iterations iirc of the steam machines even tho the library back then was terrible with only native linux games, so for them its just about experimenting with concepts that try to offer a console like experience on PC, like i said however running steamOS is just their way of getting people into the steam ecosystem because well its steamOS but if they had the same concept in 2012 when the OG steam machines worked (and assuming mobile apu hardware was as good and power efficient back then which it was not) it would've still been a success

    • @rigierish3807
      @rigierish3807 2 месяца назад

      @@Butcher-m7y The portable aspect isn't the only reason the handheld worked: sure it helped, but if it had no compatibility layer as developed as it is today to be able to run Windows games on Linux (which represent more than 90% of games out there and 99+% of AAA games) without any noticeable performance drop whatsoever, they wouldn't have nearly as much success, if not simply flop.
      On top of that, you mention that you could've installed Windows on the Steam Machine, however, let's not forget most people run on the default operating systems and settings, so they are very unlikely to put Windows on it if it's something else preinstalled (same way for laptop and PCs, which is by far the first reason why Windows is the predominant OS in the world on PC) and more importantly, the console would've been very limited because Windows uses much more resources than Linux just to run and isn't nearly as optimizable as Linux (considering Windows is fully proprietary while Linux and most of its applications are open source, which is one of the reason it was picked by Valve).

    As a dev. Yes. I want to see more Linux development. It'll open a lot of doors for gaming and for performance on something like the steam deck. Right now we got the learning curve to deal with, but with valve's support, we could go so much further very quickly. Downside is, if the shoe ends up on the other foot and suddenly we need a proton like layer on Windows for Linux development. I hope we never reach that point, we need to desktop space OS's as this monolithic virtual monopoly has to end. Android is one right, but their closed system is just not something I want to deal with.

    I suppose the old adage is true: a rising tide lifts all ships. Linux being adopted the way it is by Steam Deck can only be a good thing for all Linux distros (not just SteamOS) and PC gaming in general.
    Also, I'm glad to see the Deck (or in this case, the Ally X) used as a local multiplayer machine! Got myself a handful of Stadia controllers over the course of the last year - they work really well with the Deck over Bluetooth, and they're part of my portable setup that I bring to a local meetup group I help to run in my area.
    Lastly, screw GameStop for closing GameInformer. The goodbye message that was initially posted to their Twitter was determined to be AI-generated, then the team posted a real goodbye on the same account, which was then subsequently deleted. A 33-year legacy just completely stomped on and buried.

    After installing Linux on my main computer it gave me severe disdain towards Proton. Despite what you’ve said, I’ve found Proton to be incredibly INconsistent with its performance. Furthermore, the fact that it’s inspired developers to abandon native ports means there’s times where I can’t play a giant chunk of my library because Proton doesn’t feel like working that day.
    Most of the issues with native ports you mentioned are a direct result of developers either being lazy and not doing their due diligence, or making bad decisions and using horrible game engines in the case of System Shock. Neither of these are excuses, and I don’t think they should be treated as such. The choice to abandon native ports can and will hurt Linux in the long run, and I wonder if the added accessibility will be worth those long-term problems we’ll inevitably run into.

However, they should be adopting standards like Flatpak or AppImage for deployment of their ports, as they bundle all the necessary binaries together to ensure they are usable if and when the kernel or GCC compilers have feature breaking changes.

    I've been using my steam deck as a desktop replacement while trying to live off of solar (just as a small experiment for myself), and while I'm not doing a lot of the heavy lifting I might be doing on my main desktop, I can easily get through most days without even noticing much of an effect. Sure, I'm not maxing out my game settings, and I'm not drawing on huge canvases with dozens of layers, but I'd say for anybody who can work on a laptop, the steam deck is practically that, plus gaming, minus the no-setup portability (and that's just because I really can't work when that 7" screen is sitting on a table, you really need a portable monitor; a traditional laptop is still the gold standard in that regard).
    Hmm, maybe a conversion dock (with an integral keyboard and screen, kinda what nexdock did for Samsung DeX) could be a cool diy project🤔... or I could stop trying to make a gaming handheld productive, but that's no fun xD

    -Disabled Frame limit, screen set to 60hz,
    -All settings set to On and/or High, and not higher than that.
    -Capped in-game at 30.

    @6:05 Valve has great documentation on how to implement cloud save features in a game. The simplest way does not even require any coding, you basically just configure in your Steam developer account the path where the save file is located and that is it!
    I don't understand how it is possible that even AAA developers that spend years making a game, fail to spend 30 minutes to read the documentation and implement cloud saves properly. Some of them fail to do it properly for cross platform, another common issue is that they set it up to sync the game settings too (the documentation specifically says not to do that!)

    Proton makes developers lazy and stick to closed source API's like DirectX rather than using OpenGL or Vulkan, native ports will aalways be the best this is why valve should create its own API tool set for Vulkan that way it would be super easy to have native version of all Vulkan on Linux & Windows, Valve need to become the leaders of Vulkan support as the more devs that still use DirectX then we will always face some kind of issue. but I do think Microsoft should opensource DX9 and older versions at this point.

    I wish Valve would fix the Steam Deck’s driver error that causes it not to sign its HDMI out signal as Full RGB, or add an option to force the Deck to output Limited RGB.
    This is particularly frustrating since it does send the correct signal signature for 16:10 signals, but not for 16:9.
    This affects all docks (official and third party) and all external monitors. Only those external displays that are either locked to Full RGB, or can be locked to Full RGB, work correctly with the Deck.

    A Windows game played via Proton still needs the same amount of rigorous testing because API calls don’t always translate properly.
    The issue with save files stems from the fact that Windows uses 2 characters to indicate that a line has ended in text files, instead of just one character like Mac, Linux, BSD, HaikuOS, Android, iOS and other OSs use. The way Windows does it makes it more compatible with typewriters. They should evolve.

    Btw Ingression caught my eye, it reminds me of one of my all time favourites "Celeste"

      The SHS is only for whatever you're currently on. I got the pop-up for the survey a few weeks ago on my steam deck, then the next day on my regular PC. It only counted each machine once.

    Steam Cloud saves have issues With Graveyard Keeper, I just play it t with Proton on.
    Endevour and Manjaro are both Arch based Distros, So the total arch share is down a bit. ( Given all the Manjaro SNAFU's , no wonder )
    Thanks for the SavePoint shout out, i was looking for a good external SSD enclosure.
    I'm backing for just the device. Want to chose my own SSD to put in there.

    Thats the main reason I would only buy a steam deck for a handheld pc, because its not infected with windows. Plus they are the main pusher for gaming on linux. I know I have good support with valve.

    Probably my only astrisk to people who are exploring the switch from Windows to Linux is be careful if you're doing that on a laptop.
    Its not that it wont work, but if your laptop manufacturers are asshats (like HP) who likes to lock down their BIOS so you cant expose proper power states (because they prioritize Windows), you might be left with a situation where suspend doesnt fully suspend and only has s2idle available with no deep sleep. In turn, you're left with a system that turns its screen off, but the fans keep spinning regardless. This means that you will have SEVERELY less battery life than if you had stayed on Windows.
    I know because its happened to me. I had installed Nobara on this HP Envy Laptop and while it worked very nicely, no matter what I did, I couldnt get my battery drain less. I used to be able to keep the system off charger for more than a week. With Linux, only a day if not less which is ashame.
    If you're always around power, this obviously wont be a problem, but for this laptop specifically, Windows was the best option....I still remote into a Linux VM remotely though 😂

    No you/they are not right about it. First the SteamOS is based on Arch, but this is Arch growth and does not include SteamOS. It started ling before arch-based steamOS/steam deck was a thing. Second also no. Fefora is growing and Bazzite is not in included in these statistics. Fedora growth is more recent than Arch growth but also started long before bazzite existed and Fedora itself is insanely more popular than Bazzite.

    What i find confusing is how a linux User space game launcher was not properly permissioned/sandboxed by SteamOS and was allowed access to the system files/overlay in a way that allowed corruption to occur. Partly the developers fault but also Valves. It seems to me they need some tighter controls on what/where a linux game can install and files it can affect. I think we need to pressure both on what actually occurred here. Someone should really try debugging the install to see what it is doing.

    • @FanTheDeck
      @FanTheDeck  2 месяца назад +1

      I don't know what actually happened but honestly this is my thought exactly. How could the game affect an entire operating system with properly controlled permission layers? Truly bizarre.

    • @rgreening
      @rgreening 2 месяца назад +1

      @@FanTheDeckseems to me, valve missed a couple of gating opportunities and failsafes in the efforts of creating a fs overlay to allow some persistence for things like decky loader to keep certain configs files/etc over upgrades. This has loosened the immutability and maybe caused this issue. Dunno, but we deserve to know how this happened.

    • @FanTheDeck
      @FanTheDeck  2 месяца назад +2

      @@rgreening Just got some more info on this and it's less severe than it seems (but still something Valve should address). This comes from someone that has been resolving people's issues on the Steam Deck Discord and he says that it's not breaking the OS. It's breaking the Steam installation which prevents the Steam Deck from booting into Game Mode. This results in just a black screen. So then you have to boot into a safe mode (by holding QAM while powering up) where you can bring up a shell and then going through repair steps. Seems like Valve should have some fallback that boots user straight into Desktop Mode if Steam install is corrupted.

    • @rgreening
      @rgreening 2 месяца назад +1

      @@FanTheDeck yes, a fallback to desktop or even better, a button combo that says boot to desktop and offer a way to allow user to choose desktop as the default of they want. There are times i use the deck as a PC and every reboot i goes to game mode and then i have to switch. Would be nice to have a boot option or button or something.
      But yeah, a fall back would have helped immensely here.

    I think Proton must be the way to go until Linux market share grows considerably. It runs better than native builds most of the time and developers don't have to waste their time.

    After daily driving a Steam Deck ass my Main PC for a few weeks, the steam deck has some glaring issues.
    1.) Memory Shortage. I have experienced a few Hard-Locks on select games (GTA-5, Evil West, Battlebit Remastered, and VRChat)
    2.) Problems with installing software on Steam OS. If its not a Flatpak, you are typically out of luck if it involves compiling or use of the make command.
    3.) Restrictive Nature of Steam OS can, at times, be a problem. Resizing of a page file requires CryoUtils to workaround limitations of Konsole.
    TLDR, I wish the Steam Deck had AT LEAST 24GB memory possibly 32GB, and I wish Steam OS was a more open OS

    16:32 Hot damn, warn me before you drop a Time Crisis jump scare like that!!! I'm too much a light gun enthusiast to ignore.
    That said, TC5 isn't even close to the only example; most modern arcade games, particularly shooters, are all running on a flavor of Embedded Windows XP/7/10 with a generic Intel processor and some flavor of (usually NVIDIA) desktop GPU. And there's a lot more of these kinds of games playable on Linux desktop, and subsequently Steam Deck, than you'd think (Time Crisis 5 is just an example of one that has the most stupidly easy security bypass by just running the game executable directly)--this is something I'm eager about and have been cataloguing for some time so that I could cover it soon on my channel (at some point, I've been really busy with other things lol). For a lot of these games, it's not even that much harder than it is running them natively on a normal Windows PC.
    EDIT: TC5 is Unreal Engine 3, not 5; it came out in 2015. FWIW, 2018's House of the Dead: Scarlet Dawn runs on UE4, and is pretty damn scalable for a game that normally calls for GTX 1070-levels of performance.
    Also, play Time Crisis.
